Re: [meteorite-list] Creepy crawlies!
Adam and List, (nice off-topic desert fun)... YES!! While collecting (insects) at Paramid Lake years ago, I nabbed a Pompillidae (tarantula hawk) who's body-length was 2 inches+, and it actually looked like a bird flying aroundand it stung me. Pain wasn't even the word for it. I remember that is felt like an electric shock, and literally knocked my off my feet. Oddly, that's all I remember. It now lives somewhere in the UC Davis Bohart Museum. They literally carry tarantulas away to provision the nest for young-uns. See you all in Tucson! [meteorite-list] New American Iron find
Hello Listees, and a belated Happy New Year. Recently, I received a rather unusual 600 gram 'rock' from a friend on Geoff Notkin's Club Space Rock. He sent it to me so that I could have a closer look at it and give him my opinion. He had sanded a small area and noticed that was metallic. METALLIC?? The thing is solid iron! I filed that area flat, and polished it up and took the Nitol to it. (It was initially found in Elmore Co. Alabama around 1920). After seeing a Widmanstatten structure appear, I felt like a kid at Christmas! The pattern seems to be that of a medium Octahedrite, similar to that of a Campo, but smaller. It is now going to be sent to Dr. John Wasson via Geoff Notkin and Dr. Laurence Garvie for classification. Here is the link to my facebook album for it. Any comments would be most welcome. http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151192014720706.437610.632430705&type=1&l=24ed65fbf7 Cheers all! Re: [meteorite-list] New American Iron find
Hi Larry Thanks for the input. Yes, I too initially thougt something looked wrong, until I saw the etch. As I was admiring my handiwork, I noticed that along the outer egde of the etched window, there seemed to be a very thin boarder of, what looks to be, re-crystalized metal. It is possible that it was re-heated at one time, but not enough to do any significant damage. This might explain the unusual appearance.
