Re: [meteorite-list] NPR Science Friday
Meenakshi Wadwha tried to keep the interviewer on topic by focusing on science but he would have nothing to do with it. Yep, treat an avocation like an Easter Egg hunt and hype the prices like the Antique Roadshow and there has to be some kind of "black market" because it makes the news. This is the way the media thinks after what has happened with emeralds, diamonds and other treasure. We can thank Douglas Schmidt for starting it and others who popularized meteorite hunting by attaching ridiculously high price tags to each and every piece in the media to gain a few minutes worth of fame. Re: [meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk - Hammer?
I have heard a few well known meteorite dealers say that they have taken a hammer to a meteorite to break it up, so as not to lose any material, as opposed to cutting the meteorite. So, does it then become a true "Hammer Stone"? (:-) Myself, I love the history of each meteorite. That is why I prefer most Falls over Finds. However, some of the old finds from Nininger or well before, as listed in the National Academy of Sciences-Memoirs, XIII, Meteorites Of North America, To January 1, 1909, have such rich and wonderful stories that it is like reading a good old adventure book. Hammer Falls and Hammer Stones just add glamor and richness to the fall story. Museums know this to be a fact. The more human interest in the story, the more people want to come and see the historical items. [meteorite-list] Dawn Journal - March 29, 2013
http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/journal_03_29_13.asp Dawn Journal Dr. Marc Rayman March 29, 2013 Dear Indawnstrious Readers, In the depths of the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, far from Earth, far even from any human-made object, Dawn remains in silent pursuit of dwarf planet Ceres. It has been more than six months since it slipped gracefully away from the giant protoplanet Vesta. The spacecraft has spent 95 percent of the time since then gently thrusting with its ion propulsion system, using that blue-green beam of high velocity xenon ions to propel itself from one alien world to another. The ship set sail from Earth more than two thousand days ago, and its voyage on the celestial seas has been wonderfully rewarding. Its extensive exploration of Vesta introduced humankind to a complex and fascinating place that had only been tantalizingly glimpsed from afar with telescopes beginning with its discovery 206 years ago today. Thanks to the extraordinary capability of ion propulsion, Dawn was able to spend 14 months orbiting Vesta, observing dramatic landscapes and exotic features and collecting a wealth of measurements that scientists will continue to analyze for many years. When it was operating close to Vesta, the spacecraft was in frequent contact with Earth. It took Dawn quite a bit of time to beam the 31,000 photos and other precious data to mission control. In addition, engineers needed to send a great many instructions to the distant adventurer to ensure it remained healthy and productive in carrying out its demanding work in the unforgiving depths of space. Dawn is now more than 20 times farther from Vesta than the moon is from Earth. Alone again and on its long trek to Ceres, it is not necessary for the ship to be in radio contact as often. As we saw in November, the spacecraft now stops ion thrusting only once every four weeks to point its main antenna to Earth. This schedule conserves the invaluable hydrazine propellant the explorer will need at Ceres. But communicating less frequently does not mean the mission operations team is any less busy. Indeed, as we have explained before, "quiet cruise" consists of a considerable amount of activity. Each time Dawn communicates with Earth, controllers transmit a second-by-second schedule for the subsequent four weeks. They also load a detailed flight profile with the ion throttle levels and directions for that period. It takes about three weeks to calculate and formulate these plans and to analyze, check, double check, and triple check them to ensure they are flawless before they can be radioed to Dawn. In addition to all the usual information Dawn needs to keep flying smoothly, operators occasionally include some special instructions. As one example, over the last few months, they have gradually lowered the temperatures of some components slightly in order to reduce heater power. When Dawn stretched out its solar array wings shortly after separating from the Delta rocket on September 27, 2007, its nearly 65-foot wingspan was the longest of any NASA interplanetary probe. The large area of solar cells is needed to collect enough light from the distant sun to power the ion propulsion system and all other spacecraft systems. Devoting a little less power to heaters allows more power to be applied to ionizing and accelerating xenon, yielding greater thrust. With two and a half years of powered flight required to travel from Vesta to Ceres, even a little extra power can make a worthwhile difference to a mission that craves power. Most temperature adjustments are only two degrees Celsius (3.8 degrees Fahrenheit) at a time, but even that requires careful analysis and investigation, because lowering the temperature of one component may affect another. Xenon and hydrazine propellants need to be maintained in certain ranges, and the lines they flow through follow complicated paths around the spacecraft, so the temperatures all along the way matter. Most of the hardware onboard, from valves and switches to electronics to structural mounts for sensitively aligned units, needs to be thermally regulated to keep Dawn shipshape. It can take hours for a component to cool down and stabilize at a new setting, and sometimes the change won't even occur until the spacecraft has turned away to resume thrusting, when the faint warmth of the sun and the deep cold of black space affect different parts of the complex robot. Then it will be another four weeks until engineers will receive a comprehensive report on all the temperatures, so they need to be cautious with each change. In addition to the ongoing work to keep Dawn flying true, some special activities are being developed for later this year, each of which will serve two important purposes: they will yield valuable experience in preparing for operations in orbit around Ceres, and they will provide interesting material for you to read

I can't hammer home the importance of hammering out an agreement on this hammer issue. We don't need to fight hammer and tongs over it every time it comes up! It's true that when a hammerstone comes under the hammer, it usually brings more money. And hammerheads will lie about if it hit something. Re: [meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk - Hammers for sure.
Michael, and all - How would you know beyond a CERTAIN reasonable doubt that it is a "hammer" by the common accepted definition as followed by most ( at least on this list)? With all of the media coverage from the Internet to cable television programming, there are so many more people that are not only aware of meteorites but also the usually misguided (as well as extremely over-inflated perception) of the cash value any given fall ( or find) will bring to the one you recovers or deals in said rocks, no? And with this being said, how would anyone, even one of our illustrious hunters such as Mike Farmer, know with 100% reasonable certainty that a recovered meteorite indeed hit a person, animal, or man-made object when many of these stones are small, low mass specimens (i.e. < than a few grams ) with many only 3 or 4 grams and much less in mass (many 1 gram or less) being recovered in very open, rural areas. What's to stop those unscrupulous, greedy types from finding many of the specimens dug from the snow covered countryside and picked up from frozen lakes/ponds, taking them, posing them on or near any given object, snapping a photo, and then claiming it hit their house, car, tractor, cow, what have you? Even with a signed affidavit, and photos galore, in the end, it's still someone's word and that is all. Especially with so many smaller, lighter pieces, would they even leave any physical evidence they hit an object, any object other than the ground? I mean leave dents, holes, fragmented pieces of the stone itself embedded in the object showing it may have indeed caused the said damage from impact as the owner/recoverer may try to persuade a perspective buyer/dealer? I wouldn't necessarily think so. Sure, larger stones with mass would, as proven in the past with several well known falls, but I feel this fall with all of its WORLD WIDE notoriety would be a hard one to convince someone ( speaking here of me specifically I guess) that for sure it hit anything other than Terra firma itself. ...and taking a strangers word -- who knows ( or thinks they know) what a meteorite will fetch monetarily, and what one that hits a man made object would fetch as being even more. I would be very skeptical. I'm not dissing anyone for their love of hammers and the importance they may place on a specific stone from a fall for it hit something deemed special while another stone from the same fall just hit dirt, but to me, any meteorite fall (especially freshly witnessed falls that are soon collected after their sudden deceleration ) are all important and cherished -- doesn't have to have hit anything special -- just the fact it came from above to now become obtainable (when before it was unobtainable by anyone other than NASA) by little me on this little planet is good enough! I guess I'm trying to state the fact that now due to so much awareness by the world at large of meteorites -- through the popularity gained from so much media exposure with the advent of modern communication technology made so available to so many -- this is beginning to become a problematic issue from here on. Except for the few exceptional cases that will undoubtedly arise here and there, I would state that the true, but well worn adage, "/Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence/" ( as one of my personal heroes, Carl Sagan was fond of saying) really applies when it comes to the term hammer. I'll will close with the claim I've been know to be wrong, called ignorant, and uninformed, and I will go back quietly, and peacefully to my sweet hiding place in my little corner of the world. Re: [meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk - Not Hammers
Hi Gary, Anne & all, Correct. I coined and defined the term: ""Hammer" - any individual which is part of a hammer fall in which one or more of the individuals struck an artifact, animal or human." People who argue about this are generally uninterested in the "hammer" aspect of meteorites - and they have every right to be. However, when they argue about it it is a matter of attempting to Impose their values/preferences on everyone else. I don't give one rat's patutie if someone else likes, cares about At all or couldn't care less. It is something I care about and collect and offer to others who are interested. People on this list often find it somehow "entertaining" to get Into someone else's face about what interests them. I don't care one iota about abstract art. However, I am not So egocentric as to proclaim it is not art! Obviously others consider it Art - so, to them it is art. My lack of interest or understanding is my Problem, not theirs. Hi Juris & others interested, Mike Farmer tells me hundreds if not thousands of stones Have been recovered from roofs (but mixed in with all others). As for the shockwave questiondebatable. Carancus in Peru Had a shockwave that killed a llama and a ewe, but also had ejected A mudball filled with meteoritic fragments hit the roof of a house. (See photo and story about 1/3rd down the page at: http://michaelbloodmeteorites.com/Hammers3.html Under, CARANCUS) So, given the roof stones and the woman struck, Chelyabinsk is Definitely a hammer fall...though it remains to be seen if we will end up With specimens KNOWN to be hammer stones. (Ironically, hundreds Of hammer stones will end up in collections - but unidentified as such). Re: [meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk - Hammer?
Hi List, Rumor has it that the Russian woman struck by the stone has adopted the Mbale boy. Details at six. This meteorite fall should be considered a "hammer" fall, in my opinion. I know some hate that term. But let's face it, this fall did hammer the crap out of an entire city. Buildings knocked down, thousands of windows blown out. You can't argue against that. Before the purists hurl chondrites at me I am aware of the important distinction terminologywhich is this - only those stones which actually struck something are hammers or hammer stones. But, if there is ever a candidate for something to be called a "hammer fall" - this is it. This is the biggest and most devastating hammer since Tunguska. Personally, I'd be careful purchasing hammer stones or artifacts from this fall. Given the high TKW and thousands of individual stones across a populated area, the potential for fraud is elevated. It would be too easy for an unscrupulous seller to say that any given stone bounced off their car or shed. Documentation is important. Look at how many Sikhote shrapnels were being passed as Chelyabinsk on eBay right after the fall. Some of those same scammers could easily take a real meteorite and fudge the hammer side of the story to increase the interest and value. I would stay away from "hammers" of this fall, unless they are offered by someone like our Russian list-members or someone who has been on the ground in Russia, like Mike. Anything else is rolling the dice. Hundreds of them have already been found on top of buildings, one woman was hit by stone which went through her jacket! Will try to find the news report but hard in Russian.
