[meteorite-list] Stone fragment from XinJiang Crater is officially confirmed not a meteorite!

2013-08-16 Thread Bofang Li
Hi Listees,
Today I got the info from Dr. Zhao Xuchao (PhD from IGGCAS, MetSoc
member) that the stone fragments collected near the Xinjiang crater
(formly called fallen on July 31th), have confirmed not the meteorite
by Professor Lin Yangting (IGGCAS, member of the Nomenclature
Committee). The tested samples at IGGCAS are provided by an amateur
meteorite enthusiast named Rex who claimed had found CO Carbonaceous
Chondrite in this crater several days earlier on a videos, but
actually the samples are burnt clay or limestone with dark crust. News
reports regarding this event several days earlier also commented that
Zhang Baolin from Beijing Planetarium claimed he got a donation from a
local collector which is an achondrite meteorite, and the truth is
Zhang Baolin got a HED achondrite slice from a collector who is in
Urumuqi (over a thousand kilo-meters from the crater), and the HED
slice from the news picture looks like a NWA. Now, we can say, as some
of our listees had pointed out earlier, the crater is not caused by a
crashed meteorite.
Regards!

salam Said,

The Colorado Mineral Fossil show is September 11-15, and Fossil Expo
is from
September 13-15. The main show I think is 13-15, but you should ask
Matt Morgan
or Anne Black, because they live there.

[meteorite-list] Munich Mineral Show 2013/ Friday Evening Party

2013-08-16 Thread Andreas Koppelt
Hi list,

I´d like to inform all meteorite enthusiasts visiting the Munich Mineral
Show 2013 on the annual Friday Evening Party scheduled Friday, 25 th October
2013. The event will be held at the traditional Bavarian restaurant:

Altes Hackerhaus, Sendlinger Straße 14, 80331 Munich.

The gathering will start at 7 p.m.

The location is simple to reach: Coming from the Mineral show enter the
subway line U2 at the mineral fair heading to “Feldmoching”. Disembark at
the station “Sendlinger Tor”, take the exit to “Sendlinger Straße” and
follow the Sendlinger street 5 minutes walking. Soon, on your left side,
you´ll find the Hackerhaus. There you ask for the meteorite friends.

This is one of the best old Bavarian locations for typical Bavarian food and
beer in top quality. The famous Hacker-Pschorr dark beer comes from wooden
barrels. I am sure, you´ll like it. For more information visit
www.hackerhaus.de.
It would be a pleasure to meet all the familiar and yet unfamiliar meteorite
enthusiasts there.

Please inform me in advance, should you plan to attend, so I can make
reservations accordingly (e-mail: ra (at) koppelt.com).
If we will become a sufficiently large group, I´ll be able to get a nice
exclusive room.

Best regards,
Andi

[meteorite-list] Beni M'Hira, la météorite oubliée / Beni M'Hira, the Forgotten Meteorite

2013-08-16 Thread Bernd V. Pauli
Hello All,

Since there are now 4 Beni M'Hira meteorites in my collection
(two veined slices, two slices with heavily shocked melt areas),
I thought it was a good idea to purchase the booklet (70-pages)
confrère Pierre-Marie, Fabien and Marie published recently.

It is written in French, which some of us don't speak but still I can
definitely recommend it. It is well illustrated (lots of beautiful in-situ
photos, close-ups), it is fun to read and it is a textbook example of
painstaking documentation work = coordinates of their finds, date
of find, mass, finder, complete individual, broken piece, fragment,
etc.

Thanks to the authors and to all those who have
contributed to making it what it is: a must-have!

Bernd

[meteorite-list] AD - New Meteorites, Etched Canyon Diablo, Tissint, Gemmy LDG, and many more.

2013-08-16 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Listees and Collectors,

I have some really nice new specimens to announce this week. But
first, a quick note - you may have noticed that the categories on the
main menu of my website have been slightly re-arranged. I did this to
improve navigation and make the ordering of the categories less
arbitrary. This change should be seamless, but a few links may have
become broken in the process. If you run across a broken link, just
try typing in the name of the specimen into the search box on the
website and hit enter - that should help you find the broken link
item.

As always, use the coupon code metlist at checkout for 20% off all
of your purchases. :)

[meteorite-list] Mars Rover Opportunity Update: August 8-13, 2013

2013-08-16 Thread Ron Baalke

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html#opportunity

OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Snapping Pictures of the Martian Moons - sols 3392-3397,
Aug. 08, 2013-Aug. 13, 2013:

Opportunity is at the base of 'Solander Point' on the rim of Endeavour
Crater. The rover is positioned in front of a large rock, called 'Tick
Bush' for in-situ (contact) investigation with the instruments on the
robotic arm.

On Sol 3392 (Aug. 8, 2013), a Microscopic Imager (MI) mosaic was collected
of Tick Bush, followed by the placement of the Alpha Particle X-ray
Spectrometer
(APXS) for multi-sol integration. On Sol 3396 (Aug. 12, 2013), the robotic
arm repositioned the APXS with a small offset, documented by a Microscopic
Imager finder frame image. Also on that sol, the rover took advantage
of a celestial alignment and imaged the transit of both moons, Phobos
and Deimos. A second Phobos transit was imaged on the next sol while the
APXS continued to integrate on the rock target.

As of Sol 3397 (Aug. 13, 2013), the solar array energy production was
376 watt-hours with an atmospheric opacity (Tau) of 0.695 and a solar
array dust factor of 0.532.

Total odometry is 23.73 miles (38.18 kilometers).
