[meteorite-list] MAVEN Granted Reprieve From Government Closure
http://www.spaceflightnow.com/atlas/av038/131003resumption/ Mars orbiter granted reprieve from government closure BY STEPHEN CLARK SPACEFLIGHT NOW October 3, 2013 Engineers returned to work on NASA's next Mars mission at the Kennedy Space Center on Thursday after receiving an emergency exception under federal law to continue launch preparations for a $671 million orbiter to probe the red planet's atmosphere. After a two-day shutdown, processing work will resume on the MAVEN spacecraft, shown here during an illumination test at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. Credit: NASA/Kim Shiflett. The decision keeps the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution, or MAVEN, mission on schedule for liftoff Nov. 18 at the opening of a 20-day primary launch window. I learned this morning that NASA has analyzed the MAVEN mission relative to the Anti-Deficiency Act and determined that it meets the requirements allowing an emergency exception, said Bruce Jakosky, MAVEN's principal investigator from the University of Colorado at Boulder's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. NASA sent 97 percent of its civil servant workforce home Tuesday after Congress failed to pass a federal budget, only granting exceptions for activities deemed essential for the protection of life or property. While administrators, support staffs and scientists were furloughed, operations of the International Space Station in support of its six-person crew continued this week, along with data-gathering activities on the Hubble Space Telescope and NASA's rovers and orbiters already at Mars. But the government shutdown halted work on missions still in development on the ground, such as MAVEN. Officials feared an extended government shutdown could threaten the mission's ability to launch by mid-December, the last chance to send a spacecraft to Mars until the planets are in the right positions again in early 2016. With the MAVEN work stoppage lifted Thursday, engineers lost about three days of work on the spacecraft. But officials with Lockheed Martin Corp., MAVEN's prime contractor, said last week the mission was nine days ahead of schedule going into the shutdown. Good news for us, although we're very sensitive to the fact that there are still 800,000 government employees who are furloughed, Jakosky told Spaceflight Now. Teams returned to work on MAVEN inside the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility at KSC on Thursday afternoon, Jakosky said. We have already restarted spacecraft processing at Kennedy Space Center, working toward being ready to launch on Nov. 18, Jakosky wrote in an update emailed to reporters. We will continue to work over the next couple of days to identify any changes in our schedule or plans that are necessary to stay on track. Jakosky said it will take a day to ramp up activities and fully resume preparations on MAVEN. NASA's exception for MAVEN was granted under the guise of the orbiter's importance as a communications relay platform for the $2.4 billion Curiosity rover and the venerable Opportunity robot exploring the Martian surface. The Mars Odyssey mission and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter currently provide communications support for the rovers, but both orbiters are flying well beyond their design lives. Launching MAVEN in 2013 protects the existing assets that are at Mars today, Jakosky said. A delay in the launch date by more than a week past the end of the nominal launch period, or a delay of launch to 2016, would require additional fuel to get into orbit. This would have precluded having sufficient fuel for MAVEN to carry out its science mission and to operate as a relay for any significant time. Scientists are also eager to launch MAVEN in time for the spacecraft's suite of solar wind monitors, particle sensors and atmospheric instruments to observe how the Martian atmosphere responds to stimuli from solar activity. MAVEN is designed to study how gases escape from the upper atmosphere of Mars, which could tell scientists how the red planet evolved from a world hospitable for life to the barren planet of today. Although the exception for MAVEN is not being done for science reasons, the science of MAVEN clearly will benefit from this action, Jakosky said. Launching in 2013 allows us to observe at a good time in the eleven-year solar cycle. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Divers Attempting To Raise Half-Ton Sunken Fragment of Chelyabinsk Meteorite
http://rt.com/news/russian-meteorite-lift-lake-679/ Divers raising half-ton sunken fragment of Russian meteorite rt.com October 3, 2013 Despite a string of unbelievable hurdles, a diving operation to lift the biggest-yet discovered fragment of the famous Russian meteorite stuck in a mud lakebed has entered the final phase. RT is scheduled to show live the recovery of the 50cm by 90cm space rock weighing an estimated 600kg, which plunged into the depths of Lake Chebarkul in February. It is one of a few salvageable chunks of a massive meteorite, which exploded over Russia's Chelyabinsk Region, producing a blast wave that injured some 1,600 people on the ground before circling Earth three times. The recovery operation started on September 10 and was expected to last for about a week, but the process was stalled due to several obstacles. The amount of sediments that need to be removed to uncover the meteorite fragment has proven to be bigger than the initial optimistic estimates. It took the team 10 days of pumping mud away from the site to come close enough to touch the rock with a probe. It's like the little green men don't want us Earthlings to get the celestial body, Maksim Shipulin, one of the divers, commented to Rossiyskaya Gazeta. We thought we'd be able to get the big meteorite from the depth of 14 meters, but it's being sucked in deeper, and we are now talking about 16 to 20 meters. The divers have to work in zero visibility conditions due to the muddied waters. It's quite risky because even an experienced diver can lose orientation underwater without visual cues. There are other hazards as well. One of the guys was almost trapped under a chunk of dense mud. It's good for him that he didn't panic, Shipulin said. They team had to take special precautions not to allow the sediments to contaminate that part of the lake, which serves as a source of drinking water for a nearby lakeside town. The town's mayor paid a visit to the site with an inspection last week, with the team seizing the chance take him underwater and show how they work. His comment after the dip reportedly was You guys should be paid more. The operation experienced a number of drawbacks due to a string of equipment failures, which the more mystically-minded part of the expedition call unbelievable. Apart from the diving part the team has to deal with unfavorable weather and regular interruptions by curious gawkers, who crowd the site of the operation in their boats. While the biggest prize so far eluded the divers, they have found eight smaller fragments of the meteorite, the biggest one weighing just under 5kg, which is currently the largest fragment of the Chelyabinsk meteorite found. Their other catch includes plenty of garbage and a large number of magnets - the remainder of the winter enthusiastic hunt for smaller meteorite fragments by various entrepreneurs. The raising of the meteorite is co-funded by local authorities and Aleut, the company conducting the operation. It says it has invested some $95,000 of its money in the project, hoping that the generated publicity would be enough compensation. Being part of a historic event is also a reward in itself, divers say. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] New Brazilian fall field trip report - The Vicencia Meteorite
Hello all! I have arrived today from another field trip to recover the most recent Brazilian fall. I have solved to write this small report to let everybody know about this fall: This very interesting fall event occurred on a small district of Vicencia named Borracha. Vicência is a small city located about 120 km from Recife city, the capital of Pernambuco state in Brazil northwest. According to residents, Borracha interestingly received its name because it grew very fast stretching like rubber, that means Borracha in Portuguese. Mr. Adeilson was working in front of his modest joinery in Borracha village on a sunny Monday day of September, 21st. At a certain moment at around 3:00 PM he stooped to pick up something on the the ground and suddenly heard a very loud noise of something that had just hit the ground nearby him. He did not know what had happened but soon noticed a very strange black rock on a small pit only about 1 meter from him (he told us he measured the distance from where he was and the meteorite pit with a measuring tape and this can be seen on some youtube videos). Mr. Adeilson caught the almost hammer stone that could have killed him and noticed that one side of the rock was still hot and the other cold. Many neighbors were in front of their houses and witnessed the impact event noticing only the loud noise of the meteorite impact on the ground. As usual, nothing at impact zone was heard or seen in the air except the ground hit impact. One or two of them were just on the exact impact location very few minutes ago. I had just arrived home from another hard work day on Friday 27th and read some Internet hot news concerning a possible new meteorite fall in Brazil. According to these news only a meteorite could have caused such event. I immediately called Dr. Elizabete Zucolotto, meteorite researcher and curator of the Brazilian NM. She also read the news and there was no doubt that it could be a meteorite fall. We had to go to that location immediately. We bought the flight tickets to Recife at that same night and traveled the following day. Arriving at Recife we rented a car and headed to Vicência and then to Borracha village. On the way from Vicência city to the village we started to notice the mountains were covered with sugar cane and banana plantations and started to notice that finding more pieces of this fall could possibly be harder than Varre-sai. At least in Varre-sai there were some pastures to search. The entrance for the village is near an alcohol plant. Finding the village was also hard as there was no signs on the way and we had to ask to many people we found on the way. A lot of them were drunk and we thought that the sugar cane plantion were only for local usage.. The village is basically one road with houses on both sides and a small church. Interestingly the first person we have found on that village was Mr. Adeilson in front of his joinery that I have recognized by the videos and pictures. As hapenned in Varre-Sai with Mr. Germano, Mr Adeilson was already a famous person on that small village and had already given some interviews to TV channels and local radios. Fortunatelly the rock was still with him besides the fact that he had received many offers to sell but refused. The first lower offer he received was from a local resident that offered a new motorcycle. At fall location we made video interviews with Mr. Adeilson and some neighbors that witnessed the fall event. It was hard even for us that are Portuguese native to sometime understand what Mr. Adeilson said because of his strong accent. We then asked him if we could see the rock. He agreed and lead us to his modest house nearby the joinery. Holding the stone there was no doubt it was a beautiful super fresh meteorite that had fallen less than a week ago and was recovered still hot from the ground! We took pictures and talked to a lot of people that were in front of Mr. Adeilson's house attracted by the outer space visitor notice that spread like fire. There was no condition to try buying the stone at that moment and we decided to leave Mr. Adeilson's house and headed again to the fall area to try search on nearby mountains covered with plantations. Also we have used the best effective meteorite recovery method: teaching locals to find meteorites and offering them a reward. Another thing that must be done was trying to figure out the meteorite bolide direction and possible strewn field area. To accomplish this we tried to interview other residents further from the impact zone and to discover if someone had seen the bolide or heard the explosion in the air. Nobody saw any sign of the bolide or smoke in the air but we got some clues that some noise could have been heard on a nearby city. It was late that first day and we had to find some hotel to sleep. Surely there was no hotel on that very small village and we headed in the eventide to that
