NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory manages the 2001 Mars Odyssey mission
for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C. The Thermal Emission
Imaging System (THEMIS) was developed by Arizona State University,
Tempe, in co.oration with Raytheon Santa Barbara Remote Sensing.
The THEMIS investigation is led by Dr. Philip Christensen at Arizona State
University. Lockheed Martin Astronautics, Denver, is the prime contractor
for the Odyssey project, and developed and built the orbiter. Mission
operations are conducted jointly from Lockheed Martin and from JPL, a

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite collection of East London Museum in South Africa stolen

2014-03-28 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Fred,

It would be a Gibeon from Namibia. Keetmanshoop
is one of the farms where it's been found.
http://articles.adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-iarticle_query?bibcode=1967SA
OSR.238.C&db_key=AST&page_ind=0&data_type=GIF&type=SCREEN_VIEW&classic=Y
ES

Keetmanshoop is a 168 kg iron, was on display
in the local high school. Dimensions, fall
date, discovery date, and discoverer are
unknown. The Smithsonian got 622 gm. of it.
Went to the East London Museum.

It is the largest of the meteorites stolen
from the East London Museum in South Africa
on March 26-27, 2014.
http://www.dispatch.co.za/news/organised-thieves-steal-museums-space-rocks/

It's a hot rock...

Dear Listees and Karmaka

Thanks for this rather depressing news. I am fearful for the security

[meteorite-list] Ad - Galactic Stone News - 30% OFF Permanent Price Reductions and New Website Translator

2014-03-28 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks
Hi Listees and Collectors,

I have two announcements this week regarding my website.

#1) Website Translator : for my overseas, non-English-speaking
visitors and friends, I have implemented a translator widget on my
website. On the upper-left side of the page, above the category links,
is a Google Translator widget. Simply select your language from the
drop-down menu, and it will automatically translate the website. This
has been long overdue.

#2) Prices Slashed : every price in the store has been reduced by 10%
permanently! - You can still use all the normal coupon codes in
addition to this discount. This reason for this reduction is two-fold
: first, it's a customer appreciation gesture to all of my long-time
repeat clients, and secondly, it is recognition that economic times
are tough (for buyers and sellers) and maybe some lower prices will
spur some additional sales and make everyone a little happier on both
sides of the transaction. Now you can use your "metlist" coupon code
at checkout for an additional 20% OFF your entire order - taking into
account the new price reductions, that is 30% OFF. :)

#3) I no longer ship to Vogsphere. The customs and postal service
there is a nightmare and it's not worth the excessive paperwork,
taxes, and delays.

#4) The link for the Recent Falls webpage has been moved. It is no
longer on the main page. You can still find it at this URL -
http://www.galactic-stone.com/pages/falls

---> www.galactic-stone.com

All new offerings - http://www.galactic-stone.com/products/brand-new

Thanks for looking and have a great weekend!

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite collection of East London Museum in South Africa stolen

2014-03-28 Thread Peter Davidson
Dear Listees and Karmaka

Thanks for this rather depressing news. I am fearful for the security and
safety of collections in South African museums. This is not a story I haven't
heard before involving other museums. I hope the perpetrators are caught, but I
fear they will not. This can only serve to encourage other to do the same -
unfortunately this also means curators and other museum workers.

Cheers
