Re: [meteorite-list] Ebay Again!

2014-10-22 Thread Daniel Noyes via Meteorite-list
Hi All,

Do wonders never cease. The blue hue is interesting, but if it is a
lunar, then I'm Mickey Mouse! Maybe it is another one of those Magic
Moon rocks, but in this case it turns blue when you flash it with a
camera.

Speaking of which...P. T. Barnum was right and with the holiday season
coming up, there will be those that are naïve and buy something as a
gift that is far from what they thought. Case in point, I have tried
multiple times to get ebay to address this listing that has been on
there for many months:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/231011500778?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Judging from the current listing, they have sold 13 of these magic moon
rock kits in this round alone. Being a novelty item and cheap price is
irrelevant. It's bad. I have submitted complaints several times in the
ebay "report an item" procedure, pointing out that to list it in the
title as Moon rocks and then do nothing in the description to
substantiate the claim is bogus, especially when they are nothing of the
sort. Ebay has done zip in response. Maybe someone more persuasive can
get eBay's attention. Notes to the seller go unanswered. The only magic
is their ability to trick the unsuspecting!

Best regards,
Daniel

Has anyone ever heard of that seller?

You might as well be saying "Look how smart (you are.)" I don't know
who is alerting Anne Black to these ads, but to me, at the least, and
I would predict I am not the only one, the person is an utter
nuisance. Regarding this latest ad, it would be too ridiculous to
comment upon it, so I will refrain.

Re: [meteorite-list] "Ebay Again!"

2014-10-22 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks via Meteorite-list
Hi Folks,

Over the years, going back into the List archive, you will see
intermittent spurts of vigilance for these fakes, especially in
regards to eBay listings. Frankly, there are just too many different
sellers and too many different fakes to police them all. eBay does
not help in most cases and you are generally wasting your time trying
to get eBay to make enforcement on their end work. That leaves us on
the outside, and most of us are too busy with life to take on the
added work of being eBay-Cop for meteorwrongs. It is also a thankless
job if one chooses to accept the work - lots of pissed off or trollish
sellers who do not give a damn and the sucker buyers are born every
minute. The obvious fakes are not really the true problem.

The misrepresented meteorites are the biggest threat to market and
collections integrity in my opinion. Selling a piece obvious of coal
or slag as a meteorite is usually a one-off scam by some opportunistic
yahoo - they use disposable eBay accounts and it's like playing
whack-a-mole to keep them in check. Truthfully, they cannot be
stopped entirely - it's buyer beware. A modest amount of homework
before buying will pay big dividends with any newbie buyer.

The bigger and more insidious threat is fallen dealers operating in
the relative safety of eBay - they put out mislabeled or
misrepresented meteorites. They are real meteorites, but not the type
or locality being offered. Is that an Ash Creek or a Chergach? Is
that a Buzzard Coulee or a fresh-looking Bassikounou? Is that really
a Chelyabinsk or a Oum Dreyga? Some are easy to spot and avoid -
others can be tricky to the eye with clever camera-work and lighting.

The best advice for eBay newbies - know your seller. If you do not,
then find someone who does and ask them.

Best regards,

MikeG

[meteorite-list] AD: A Couple Important Updates

2014-10-22 Thread Anne Black via Meteorite-list

Hello List Members:

A couple important updates:
I just received a few more of those super-rare Ivory Coast Tektites,
not very many left so please take a look, and if you always dreamed of
owning one, don't wait too long: http://www.impactika.com/

And I just completely re-formatted, updated the Thin-Sections page.

Lots of new thin-sections. Even a few thin-sections of NWA 8409, paired
to NWA 7325 as verified by Dr. Tony Irving. But just a few left.
Also, you will find there the result of a very nice trade I made with
ASU (thank you Dr. Garvie): a whole bunch of thin-sections from older,
named meteorites: http://www.impactika.com/TSlist.htm

A couple comments to help you navigate that very busy page:
Any Ref# starting with A-TS. will indicate that it is a
thin-section from ASU
Also the thin-sections of Pasamonte and Sioux County are clearly quite
old, the epoxy is yellowing in places, and they were obviously not made
by an expert. However they were part of the collection ASU bought
directly from Harvey Nininger when he retired in the 1960s, and those 2
meteorites were studied, publicized and sold by H. Nininger, so could
it be that those thin-sections were made by H. Nininger himself? It is
certainly possible, but it could not be verified by ASU. ( If
interested, read
http://imca.cc/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=199 to learn how
the Nininger collection ended up at ASU).

Any questions, any comments, or problems with the site, just tell me!
Thanks.
