[meteorite-list] Mount Dooling Stolen

2018-09-16 Thread Blake via Meteorite-list

Hi All,

Blaine had a 292.6g Mount Dooling stolen from his room yesterday
afternoon. I posted this fact on his yahoo groups list with pictures
yesterday but have yet to see it posted. I hoped I could post links to
the pictures through the posting but yahoo seems to be holding it up.
Once (if) it does come through I'll re-post this with the links (if they
actually work). I know Blaine has had trouble with yahoo delaying posts
before.

steer asteroids into Earth’s atmosphere and mine them

Re: [meteorite-list] Skull Carved Out of an Iron Meteorite

2018-09-16 Thread Alfredo Petrov via Meteorite-list
Not my taste and I would never buy such a monstrosity, but let's keep in
mind that from the point of view of "destruction" of valuable scientific
material, this is really no big deal in this particular case. Gibeon is
abundant; no scientist needs a piece for study anymore. And if one objects
to this type of "destruction by artist", what about all the destruction by
micromounters, selling/collecting tiny fragments of meteorites broken down
until they have lost all paragenetic context? And some day, in the not too
distant future, material from known asteroids will be brought to Earth, and
all these miscellaneous bits that have dropped to Earth from unidentified
bodies will suddenly have a much lesser scientific value.
Cheers,
Alfredo

2018-09-16 Thread Greg Hupe via Meteorite-list
As a meteorite hunter, collector and one who shares with the scientific
community, collectors, museums and others, I can say that most who are tasked
with cutting any meteorite preserve the cuttings to be sold in small pieces and
even the cutting dust and metal shavings are saved and used in a variety of
ways. As an artist I can appreciate the workmanship and beauty of the skull and
wish I had some of the ancient artifacts made from meteoritic materials.

Greg

[meteorite-list] Skull Carved Out of an Iron Meteorite

2018-09-16 Thread Daniel Fronefield via Meteorite-list
Well, if anyone ever has any 'scrap' iron meteorite, I'll be delighted to
take it off their hands. That is a material that I routinely hot forge back
into solid material that I can then use in my Damascus for knife blades.
Minimal waste from processing slices, spheres, skulls, etc.:)

2018-09-16 Thread michael kelly via Meteorite-list
 Greg,
Yeah that sure is the case when a person in the meteorite community is doing
the cutting.  Tracking that no qiestions asked.  My concern is when non
meteorite enthusiasts are doing the cutting.  Someone dead focused on getting
their vision created who is an artist/maker bery well might not.

I am not even saying that is the case with this artist.  Just stating in
general i could easily see it happening.  When it is an art person using a
meteorite not a meteorite person using art.
I’m with you on the artifacts, fascinating that meteorite iron being early
abailable was a source of material pre iron making.

Re: [meteorite-list] was Skull ...Cosby Creek Iron Meteorite

2018-09-16 Thread MEM via Meteorite-list
For perspective --and trivia. Be it remembered that the Cosby Creek 3 ton(?)
Meteorite found in the early 1800s was "mined" for iron which was used to make
Tennessee and Pennsylvania Long Rifles--and horse shoes.
In fact one of the test used by collectors of these 200 year old flintlocks to
prove authenticy is testing for nickel content!
I don't know how much nor where the remainents of Cosby Creek are, but
interesting to know that a large iron meteorite, found outside the Great Smokie
Mountains National Park,  had a big part in settling the frounteer of Eastern
America as well the defense of the Alamo and future Republic of Texas 180+
years ago.
I am pretty sure there was no discussion at the time about whether it should be
kept as found forva future museum --or divided up, smelted and forged into
rifle barrels.
The remaining unanswered question is what kind of tool did they use to break it
up for transport?  This was pre wire saw and diamond blades. Whichever,  i
understand it took years to complete the process.

Re: [meteorite-list] [IMCA List] Campaign 2018

2018-09-16 Thread John Lutzon via Meteorite-list
Hi All,
I agree as well Carlos. For 10 years iv'e seen the IMCA go
from quiet to non-existent. Someone needs to light the
fuse. If I were 15 years younger I would find a way to have
the IMCA site on the local/national news channel once a month.
Some people say it's do to FB--fine, do it--have your party--But someone/
somehow needs to figure the "algorithm" to get this Organization
into the main stream. I'm beginning to believe that some/most
members are content with just paying their annual dues to state that
they're a member of the IMCA. Hmmm?$$ B.S

I know that many members are doing Much work towards educating
others about meteoritic subjects. Great, lets hear about it and why not
call a local news organization about it -- they might pick it up.

We claim to be a International Meteorite Collectors Association--
yet our Home site is non-existent for 350 days of each year.
SOMEONE fix this.

I agree with Bill. Carlos has posted up an important issue that should be

would be helpful for those wishing to attend such events.
