Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites - Oriented vs. Orientated: What’s the Difference?
I only see where the use is as a verb. In this meteoritic context it is an adjective. While 'orientated' may be correct, the historic and accepted use has always been 'oriented'. Orientated sounds wrong and doesn't flow off my tongue easily. "oriented-vs-orientated-differencePerhaps oriented?! or not?"Dirk, perhaps so, if "three men make a tiger".There are serious logical flaws lacing the arguments and opinions presented in your link. There's an argument/appeal to a non-existent authority - the author is nobody remarkable. The worst is an appeal to numbers ("It's usage is more common so it is right"). Many words are less common, yet thankfully exist and can be used even though shorter ones are workable substitutes. Here's another grammar-assisting website:"But, once again, orientate is an accepted variant of orient and is not wrong."ref: http://grammarist.com/usage/orientate/Now just for fun, let's use an appeal to numbers to decide which site is more reliable.grammarist (my site. look at the trend and my fancy graph):http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/grammarist.com+and then writingexplained.org (your site. fancy graph and numbers again)http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/writingexplained.org+So I would conclude with fancy graphs and statistics (two above links) that because the link your site just popped out of nowhere in March 2016 and is in 73,500th place worldwide at this writing, and the site I linked to is in 9,300th place worldwide, and around for years and continually getting more popular in the rankings --for now perhaps 10x more consulted-- that we should avoid using your site as a reference. "three men make a tiger"?Both words are grammatically correct in my book and it comes down to style which is strictly a personal decision of whoever is writing. IMO, Everyone understands them ... (Posted for Dave Mouat) Please pass this on for me. Michael Blood is dead wrong on this. In the physical sciences (meteoritics, geology, physics, etc.), having a strong background in mathematics, physics, and chemistry is absolutely essential. If you have a BA in English (with little or no coursework in those fields), you would have to be one incredibly sharp cookie to be considered for a graduate program in the physical sciences. You would be taking graduate courses in geochemistry, geophysics and the like with no background in the basics. In fact, most graduate courses have prerequisites (read undergrad courses in related fields). Re: [meteorite-list] Cryptic AZ fall?
Hello List- Great post Dave. With all this talk of the West fall, I am surprised at the lack of interest in the AZ fall. There has been much less recovered and the tale of Jack's recovery effort provides an equally (if not moreso) interesting story. Further, I have not seen any of this new fall offered publicly. Good fortune allowed me to get a few smaller pieces. I am curious how its value compares to West. Cheers, Bob Holmes On Wed, Nov 4, 2009 at 4:55 PM, Dave Gheesling d...@fallingrocks.com wrote: What is the official name of the meteorite that fell in southern Arizona this summer? Heard it was Benson from someone. Everybody was looking for that one, but it's been quiet since Jack Schrader posted his announcement. This is probably because of all the other distractions. Stone number one was recovered by Schrader, a meteorite hunter, less than 45 hours after the fall. That's a first, at least here in the United States. Only European meteorite hunter Thomas Grau, I think, has triangulated and personally recovered the first stone from a fall before Schrader? Not nearly as quickly as Schrader found his piece, but almost improbable to believe this could happen twice in the same year and never before! Everyone out in the southwest hunted for the meteorite, but presumably no one else found a piece. Memory tells me that Schrader was very concerned with doing good field science around this fall - with documenting the event and mapping the strewn field? Only a few hunters were brought into his recovery project. Unusually enough, virtually nothing has been said publicly about this new Arizona fall. Not until today, anyway. This is the first step towards formally introducing the meteorite to the public. Arizona's second-ever witnessed fall. It has been a real honor to have documented the event and recovery for Schrader. [meteorite-list] Richard Norton memorial
I'm posting this on behalf of Dave Mouat. Dear Listees Last Sunday, I had the honor to pay tribute to a man I have known for more than a third of a century (that's right: over 33 years, I was a young Prof at the U of AZ and he was a young but slightly older person who was talking about the desirability of a planetarium at the UofA). I later found out that he was also a faculty (earlier) at the place I now work: the Desert Research Institute of the Nevada System of Higher Education. Quite a coincidence. The Memorial for Richard took place at the home of Dorothy Norton in Bend, Oregon, where they had lived for over 20 years (and a beautiful home it is). Dorothy had asked me to say something about Richard, the scientist and meteoriticist. I borrowed a couple of pieces from his collection and augmented them with some of my own. I added anecdotes about Richard's passion and dedication as a scientist (somewhat of a rarity as a lot of us plod through our work rather than tackle it with the fervor and enthusiasm of a post doc). I also mentioned how Richard had argued with the serious research community involved with meteorites that the hobby had added material for researchers not taken it away from them (of course, this is still a bit controversial). I mentioned the articles and explanations that Richard patiently gave us. There were no people at the Memorial who knew him as a scientist save for a neurologist, they were mostly music lovers, a side of Richard that most of the meteorite community was not aware, and the gathering was astounded to hear how we (and you) regarded him. I think the one thing that was so special was a book of contributions of special memories from you Listees that someone decided to print out on heavy paper as a lasting testiment for Dorothy to treasure and cherish. Even the gathering there was moved by the words that many of you wrote. I am honored and proud to be among you. It was distinct though and no doubt it came from within the meteorite. Some of you know which one I am talking about. The smell of that meteorite made me think of the county fairs I have been to! Let's just say that dogs lift their leg to fire hydrants, and maybe, sometime in the past, this stone just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The smell was super intense while cutting. At first I didn't know where it was coming from, then when I finished the cut, I actually smelled the stone to see if that's where the odor was originating. Sure enough! Yuck! I've cleaned the stone throughly. No amount of cleaning will remove the smell. It's definitely coming from within the meteorite itself. Re: [meteorite-list] Portales Valley Classification Info
Tom , I don't believe you were ever chided for questioning the need for reclassifying, I believe the problem stemmed from your derogatory remarks about those working (or not working, lazy, as you assert), on PV. AND as you can see now, work was being done, they were not sitting on their hands, doing nothing. Further, it seems to me as though they had a new type of class and wanted to be sure of their results. That PV was not an ordinary H6 is not an opinion that was yours alone, and you were part of a vast majority. Instead of patting yourself on the back, why don't you apologize for your derisive insinuations about those who have put much time and effort into the study of PV. It would seem to me that this unique meteorite deserves it's own group instead of being shoved into an already existing group. I do not feel like we have found every type of meteorite yet, are they going do this with all of them, just sticking them in existing categories, or will they make a new one if need be? (See my article in the May 2001 issue of Meteorite, titled Portales Valley - A Not So Ordinary (Ordinary Chondrite??)! In the recent past, the classification was modified a bit, being changed to read as an H6 Impact Melt Breccia . I am excited to be able to say that there is a distinct chance the true uniqueness of PV may soon be reflected in a possible new moniker for this intriguing meteorite. David Weir was kind enough to make me aware of a new and comprehensive paper by Alex Ruzicka, Marvin Killgore, David Mittlefehldt, and Marc Fries in the current MAPS. In this detailed work, we now have the proposed reclassification of PV as an H7, metallic-melt breccia (primitive achondrite), with the case made for a new meteorite type designation of Portalesite due to this metallic-melt breccia characteristic. You can read David's updated description of PV on his excellent website here: http://www.meteoritestudies.com Many thanks to David for news of this exciting paper, and to the authors of the paper as well. Re: [meteorite-list] Portales Valley Classification Info
Tom, The word 'lazy' came from your post, not mine. Perhaps there was an error in the initial classification, but obviously many people realized the need for clarification and were quite diligent in their pursuits. This is an ongoing process. I for one, thank Jeff Grossman for standing up and explaining what the process was. You complain about all the negativity on the list, but here you are again (the Pope, Barringer, remember?), espousing negativity. What is it you want from 'them'? If this proposed reclassification happens, what does this say about the original classification? Was it wrong? Was it a rush to judgment? Did they not want to take the time out to study it enough to properly classify it (lazy)? How could it go from an H6 ordinary chondrite to a Portalesite, H7, metallic-melt breccia (primitive achondrite) Did it experience a metamorphous between studies. I did not call anyone working on it lazy, I asked why the original group did not make up a new classification for this unique meteorite. Apparently Alex Ruzicka, Marvin Killgore, David Mittlefehldt, and Marc Fries among others I am sure, could see this meteorite needed to be studied further and thought it needed to be something more than an H6 ordinary chondrite. If this reclassification does happen, I think my question back in March of 2004 is a fair and valid question, why was PV called a H6 ordinary chondrite? Astronomers are always being reprimanded for telling us a killer asteroid is going to strike the Earth next year. They come out and say it before they get all the information and when they finally do get all the information, they look bad for jumping the gun. A scientist came out and said PV was an H6 ordinary chondrite. Now it looks like all the info might be in and someone had jumped the gun. Do these two branches of science have to play by the same rules, find out all the info before you talk? John and List, I don't believe that any HW meteorite other than 001 (referred to at that time only as Hualapai Wash), was ever recognized by any one other than the submitter. Eventually, there is one accepted HW, simply called Hualapai Wash (no numerical suffix). I do believe that the NomComm has simply lumped all the other HW mets into a single group they called Gold Basin Area meteorites. Their assertion was that all these samples came from the same (very large), heterogeneous stone. It is my contention that even the sample that was ultimately recognized as a separate meteorite and given a unique name is part of this same, massive Gold Basin stone. But that's my opinion. There has been a lot of behind the scenes talk about this issue over the past four or five years. Some thought that it was incredible that there would be twenty (20) different Hualapai Wash meteorites in addition to the original Gold Basin find. The idea that the Gold Basin meteoroid was a heterogeneous mass appears to have some merit now. This just goes to show what good science can do. Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Show, Party, Harvey Awards, Venue, etc.
Hi Geoff and All- I am all in favor of Geoff's decision to move. The event has certainly outgrown La Fuenta, and the accommodations at the Arizona Plaza should suit your (and everyone else's), needs just fine. I look forward to seeing you all down in Tucson. Bob - Original Message - From: Notkin [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Meteorite List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, December 16, 2004 1:09 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Tucson Show, Party, Harvey Awards, Venue, etc. Dear Listees: Greetings from sunny Tucson where it is a pleasant 61 degrees. I have today spoken with the manager of the Arizona Plaza (formerly the Vagabond Inn; formerly the Ramada Inn University) in Tucson, and he has confirmed that they WILL be open during the 2005 Tucson show, although the long-term future of the hotel in uncertain. Show veterans will know this hotel well, as it's been the home of Blaine Reed Meteorites for many years. Thanks to Bill Mason for letting us know about this. Accommodation is available in the $100/night range, so if any of you are having trouble finding rooms, this might be a good solution. It's a bit pricey, but so are all hotels during showtime. The Arizona Plaza is very well located for show events, and is definitely a fun place to stay. Contact me off-List if you need booking info. Regarding the Sixth Annual Meteor Mayhem Birthday Bash and Harvey Awards: As previously posted, we will not be holding the 2005 party at the La Fuente restaurant, which has been its home for the past three years. As we now regularly have well over 100 guests, organizing a dinner at La Fuente, or any restaurant, is problematic at best. Every year, some of our guests have been unhappy with the food service; there were problems with customers' checks, etc., and we don't want to deal with that any more. My co-host Steve Arnold IMB and I are, therefore, planning on moving away from a sit-down dinner situation to a more informal/fun/social event with bar service. To that end we are considering holding the 2005 party and Harvey Awards ceremony in either the lounge bar or the ballroom of the Arizona Plaza. The event will take place on the evening of Friday, Feb. 4, 2005. On the same night -- at 7 pm -- our good friends at AAPS ( the Association of Applied Paleontological Sciences http://www.aaps.net ) will be holding their annual charity auction and dinner in the adjacent Mineral and Fossil Co-op. Many folks would like to attend the auction AND the party, so we are considering having a slightly later start for the party (with the Harveys presented around 9 pm) so that those who wish to have dinner with AAPS can do so, and then walk next door for the Harvey Awards. Dinner at the AAPS event will be catered by fine Italian restaurant The Barefoot Contessa, and is available to non-AAPS members for a very reasonable fee (reservations are requested). It's likely to be an excellent dinner and is always a most enjoyable event. Sorry for the overly-detailed post. I mention all of this here because I'd like to get some feedback from those planning on attending the party. Does this sound like a good solution? I'd appreciate some on-List comments, especially from those of you who have attended the party and Harvey Awards in the past. We're trying to put together something that will work for everyone! It's less than six weeks to showtime, and we are looking forward to seeing many of you here soon. My suggestion, A big Norton book burning, the books are wrong and if you quote them, you will get nasty emails too!" Tom, I don't understand your post. First you quote some harsh (and almost certainly false) criticisms about Richard Norton's work, and then go on to say you don't agree with them, and are going to keep Richard's books after all. Do you realize that your comments go into the Meteorite List archives permanently, where anyone can read them? What is your purpose in posting this material? I doubt it's news to anyone that there is occasionally an incorrect or apocryphal piece of information even in the best-researched book, and that widely-accepted facts can sometimes later be shown to be inaccurate (look at the debate regarding the authenticity of the "Nakhla dog." Richard and Dorothy Norton are among the most well-liked and respected people in the meteorite field, so why would you want to post comments like these -- whether you said them or not? Many collectors became part of the meteorite collecting world specifically because of the Nortons' book "Rocks from Space"; In addition, Richard's articles are widely and regularly published; Dorothy and Richard are both Harvey Award winners; and many List members (including myself) regard them as friends. This kind of "humor" I think crosses the line in my thinking. None of the people represented are "public figures"... How they take it depends on them I suppose... They might take it lightly and laugh, but then again, the site does not go away, it is there as long as one cares to visit... They can even copy it and spread the lampoon around... And when does the laughter turn into offense and ridicule? When Chris wrote: "I just want to say that I was extremely upset at this web site. We are perhpas at the verge of another World War, if so, many more liveswill beat stake. In this, I like to keep the "humor" on the politicians, rather than nobodies like us.
