[meteorite-list] Novato update
First off, I'd like to say how pleased I am to see Matija Bericic, the original purchaser, put the meteorite back on the market. He had been in touch with me within days and actively pursued getting a piece for research purposes. At the time no one had any idea how many, or little, would be recovered so it was a bit of a gamble. As far donating a piece for classification, Peter called me within an hour of posting pictures of my slice. He was clearly concerned he may have discarded the Webber meteorite prematurely. During our conversation we talked about classification and he told me he would retrieve the Webber meteorite be taking care of that. And that's where we left it. I never followed up with him or Alan regarding this, I just assume it got done. On a related note, there may have been another find a couple days ago. I'm not at liberty to disclose more details but I suspect the finder will step forth after it is verified. ___ Unlimited Disk, Data Transfer, PHP/MySQL Domain Hosting http://www.doteasy.com __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Mill Valley field report
For what it's worth I thought I'd share my experience up at Mill Valley today. My son and I did 11-miles just East of Bon Tempe Lake, which is the northern most point a radar signal was picked up. We saw no other meteorite hunters the entire day. The area is a large recreational area with tons of mountain bikers, hikers and fishermen. There are countless trails and fire roads intersecting the radar signature. But because it is so popular the trails are heavily traversed, which I think will make finding anything on or near a trail unlikely. Aside from the trails there are some hills with tall yellow grass that is mostly lying down. This makes looking in those areas so much easier then Sutter's Mill where the grass was upright. The rest of the area is heavily wooded, which is going to make finding anything in there near impossible. I use the app EveryTrail on my iPhone and uploaded the areas we covered to my FB page for those of you who are friends. If not and you want it drop me a line and I'll send it to you. It would at least save you some time covering the same ground. Needless to say we didn't find anything. But it was a beautiful hike and the weather was perfect! [meteorite-list] I too found a meteorite in Lotus, CA from the 4/22 sighting
For some reason my email from yesterday didn't post. So here it is again... Although I can't claim the first find, I did find mine at 12:40 pm today 4/24. Being a local from Sacramento I arrived on scene at 9:00 am and started hunting along the South Fork American River to the Marshall Gold Discovery State Park. After a brief lunch I drove to a nearby area which I calculated to be the center of the radar signal. Within 20 minutes I found it sitting on top of a gravel road. Even though it has a fusion crust it doesn't weight as much as similar meteorites in my collection. I estimate the weight to be in the 5-7 grams range. I'd like to compare notes with the other one that was found. Overall, a great day and a wonderful place to go hunting. The weather was great and it's just beautiful. If you're planning on hunting yourself you'll need a metal detector. There are a lot of public lands nearby but also a lot of private land.
