Hi Dan and all,On one of the other Apollo missions, I had received
some of the different times that the Apollo service module and command module
would be over the terminator and possibly visible. I had a fairly good telescope
at that time and looked and was able to see what appeared to be a dot of very
faint light crossing over so the contrast was good. As the space craft continued
orbit it would disappear in the shadow of the moon.Best

Greetings Paul and all,

Couldn't read the whole article as there were ads popping up and
keeping me from doing so but read a bit of the info there before I
gave up.

Might have been present in the article but Eugene Shoemaker helped
train the Apollo Astronauts at Meteor Crater so they would have
knowledge of what too look for on the lunar surface. He was a
candidate for the Apollo Program to be a geologist that would travel
to the moon. Due to an aliment he was disqualified. I'm sure everyone
knows that he was the first to finally get the attention of human kind
that an impact on Earth could be devastating after he and his wife
along with David Levy discovered Shoemaker/Levy 9 which impacted
Jupiter. I spent just a little time with him at the Texas Star Party
when I went some years back and before his death.

The televising of the first Apollo Moon landing was a great thing. I
was a teenager and enjoying watching anything about it I could. The TV
images weren't crystal clear but were enough for us see what was going
on, watching the astronauts climbing down the ladder to the lunar
surface. Many people viewed this as a stunt which it was not. It was a
highly calculated scientific endeavor with good odds. The fact it was
repeated successfully 6 times and almost 7 times with the help of many
talent individuals on the ground supporting the astronauts, showed it
was not a stunt. I made it down to the Apollo 17 launch (which was a
night launch) and was able to see the last Apollo Moon mission off
before returning to school. Hard to believe that the Apollo 11 landing
has almost been 50 years now. After the trip, NASA took some of the
Moon samples and encased them in a plastic for display for viewing by
people all over the Earth. I went to see a display shortly after the
trip in South Bend, Indiana. Still have the picture of the specimen.
It was a great era!
Best to all!

Hi All,Here's a link to video studies of lunar impacts done on the dark side of
the moon. It is evident that impacts, especially visual,  are occurring more
frequently than generally thought. There was a paper published not long ago
which concluded from the data that the moon's soils are being completely
resurfaced every 80,000 years.
I was actually imaging the eclipse myself, but gave up just before the impact
due to below zero windchills! Here's a link to my composite image.

Hi All,

Regarding Tracy's post--in a full Blood moon, an impact was observeable--
Good call Tracy...which may not have been seen on a "brighter" moon.

So, are there Any Moon observations that are being performed with different
filters. I believe impacts are occuring more often than we (see) know. ??

Does anyone have a guesstimate on the speed/size/origin/crater size
of this particular impact?

We watched the lunar eclipse Sunday night, although in mid-Pacific we were only
able to see it from totality on. As the Moon
started to reemerge from shadow, one of our friends said, "Does anyone else see
that reddish light on the moon by the terminator?"
Squinting, we just caught the end of a very brief flare. I was hoping and
wondering if we had spotted an impact, and lo!

https://www.newscientist.com/article/2191526-a-meteorite-hit-the-moon-during-yesterdays-total-lunar-eclipse/
A meteorite hit the moon during yesterday’s total lunar eclipse
Observers of yesterday’s lunar eclipse were blessed with the first known
sighting of a meteorite impact during such an event. The
so-called “super wolf blood moon” was eagerly watched by ...
www.newscientist.com

Another of our friends online caught the impact on video:
"At 1:23:04 you can see an
impact flash occur on the moon at about the 8
o'clock position near the edge! This matches with a variety of other videos of
the eclipse which caught the same event. " ~~

I was very lucky!

I don't have the equipment to work this material efficiently so I would like
to sell this as a bulk lot and I am open to discounting it if someone wants
everything.

However I am selling the Sikhote Alin for another collator and $1 is his
bottom line

I have the following remnants left over from my sphere roughs and I would
like to sell them as a lot

Sikhote Alin - 326 grams at $1 per gram

Re: [meteorite-list] Online Sudbury Impact Structure Publications

2018-05-19 Thread DAN via Meteorite-list

An interesting site to visit, and the meltrock, breccias and shatter cones are
easy to access. An even more exciting site, at least to me, were the Thunder
Bay deposits in western Ontario which represent the fallout and mega tsunami
which followed the Sudbury impact nearly 500 miles away!!!Layers of irregular
glassy fragments, condensation spherules, breccias,  and fragments of
stromatolites torn out by tsunamis, were all in the mix.

Re: [meteorite-list] Looking to purchase more meteorite 'give-aways' for presentations + micrometeorites

2018-04-19 Thread DAN via Meteorite-list

Hi Jon,I have a few items which might interest you. Two unclassified Moroccan
chondrites. One is a polished slice, the other is a complete specimen  (about a
pound) with a small broken end which shows metal inclusions. I've used these to
pass around to children as they are perfect for this.I have a couple smaller
specimens to.If interested,  please give me your contact information, and I
will send images and details.
I would be interested in hearing more about how you went about collecting those
nice micrometeorites?

for presentations + micrometeorites

Hi Again,
I am writing to try to purchase some more ‘give away’ meteorites for the free
presentations I give to schools and other venues. I became a NASA Solar System
Ambassador last year and my speaking schedule increased. That along with
finding ‘urban’ micrometeorites (only 2 so far after 70 hours looking - 200-400
um in size – tiny and rare!) and photographing them and getting even more
requests for presentations, has led to a depletion of ‘give-away’ stock. (I
have included an image of each micrometeorite).
Being an educator, I have a limited budget so I am looking for a bunch of
smaller (1 cm or so), decent quality meteorites at a good price. Thanks for any
help you can provide!

[meteorite-list] TISSINT METEORITE FOR SALE

2018-04-18 Thread DAN via Meteorite-list
Good day collectors, I am offering a pristine Tissint Martian shergottite for
sale. This is a mostly fusion crusted complete specimen weighing 3.37
grams.Dimensions: 15 mm x 12 mm x12 mm.
One side apparently fractured in flight, and very lightly partially recrusted,
exposing the interior along a 5 mm x 15 mm window which clearly shows 2 melt
fractures. It is along these melt fractures that researchers have found organic
molecules which were deposited by Martian ground water.
$2,700; other offers will be considered. For further information and images,
contact sharpieflight@yahoo.
(Authenticity can be verified at Blaine Reed meteorites. )
Have an impactful day,DAN
