Re: [meteorite-list] Micromounts and weights - Standards Vary

2011-07-01 Thread Dan Furlan
I agree that if something is sold as a micro-mount with no weight
specified then it is assumed the piece is small and can technically
even be even as small as 1 mg.. although when selling mounts that have
specified weights or ranges in weights it only makes sense that the
actual specimen be that weight or fall into the range specified
because if it doesn't then the item is being misrepresented
regardlless if the seller eye balls the pieces or doesn't have a
proper scale to weigh it. If you sell something to me personally at a
certain weight it better weigh that much that is my expectation. If i
buy something that is a micro-mount with no weight specified i usually
ask the seller for an approximate weight to give me an idea of what i
am buying and that is when i would get a weight that has a range for
example 10 - 20 mg which is a rough estimation and that would give me
an idea of the size of the mount.. but when people sell something with
a specific weight or say that the weight is at least a certain amount
then they are responsible to provide what they are selling rather then
come up with lame excuses.

Re: [meteorite-list] How Do We Name Asteroids?

2011-06-29 Thread Dan Furlan
When an asteroid is discovered it is given a provisional name. The
letter after the year designates the half-moon period within the year
it was found 'A' would be for the half of january, 'B' for the second
half and so on. For instance, the E in 1981 ES4 indicates it was
discovered in the first half of march. The second letter plus the
number denote to order of discovery during that half-month period. So
for our example above, it was the 118th asteriod observed in that
two-week period because 4 x 25 (number of letters in the alphabet
minus I) + 18 (S) = 118. An asteroid is only formally named once
its orbit has been confirmed; it is given a number, according to the
date when the data on its orbit were determined. Finally, a name can
be assigned. For example (4) Vesta is the 4th asteroid discovered,
while 9007 James Bond is the 9,007th asteroid discovered. Although
there are over 200,000 asteroids with numbers, less then 20,000 have
been given names. The choice of name is up to the discover; however,
it is convention that NEOs (near earth objects) are still given
traditional names whereas main belt asteroids are often named after
individuals, some of whom may or may not be be famous. Once a name
has been chosen by the discoverer the International Astronomical Union
votes to accept and publish the names. Asteroid, have been named
after musicians, such as 1034 Mozartia and 1815 Beethoven, as well as
4147 Lennon, 4148 McArtney, 4149 harrison, and 4150 starr; artists
including including 6676 monet and 4511 rembrant; writers such as 2985
shakespeare and 3047 Goethe; scientists such as 697 galilea 662
newtonia, 8000 Isaac Newton, 1991 darwin and 2001 einstein; plus other
miscellaneous people such as 4295 McCoy.

mounts at 24mg each at the time i purchased.. i purchased a whole
bunch from him for around 8.00 each thinking he was an honest seller
and i liked the display cases they came in. When i got the items they
looked very small... I decided to break open one of the mounts and
weigh it on my diamond scale. IT ONLY WEIGHS 7 MG and this was the
biggest piece.. if you are bidding on any of his items make sure you
understand he is misleading people in the weight he is stating. his
ebay ID is spaceterrain4sale just to let everybody know. I am talking
to him now about getting a refund for all the mounts i bought another
meteorite dealer ripping people off on ebay.. what a waste.. if he
doesn't agree to refund me my money i will open a claim against him
with paypal... i noticed on his new listings he is not stating the
weight anymore but I am talking about the items i purchased and the

One more thing, I just went and checked ALL this sellers items, and he
still has some of the same mounts listed at .024 grams which is 24mg
So he hasn't actually changed all his listings and is still selling

because i busted open a few of these mounts and weighed them on my
diamond scale and they weighed 7mg. a lot smaller then stated in the
listings.

Re: [meteorite-list] Buyers BEWARE!!!! *** update ***

2011-06-28 Thread Dan Furlan
Hello all, I have good news. The seller has promised to revise all
his listings. He is also offering to replace all the mounts that i
broke open for free. Furthermore, he is re-negotiating a new price
with me for these mounts since i purchased a few of them now that we
have an actual weight and hopefully we can agree on a fair price and i
will get to keep them. If we cannot agree on a new price he has
agreed to pay for the return shipping and give me a full refund. So
just incase anybody has purchased these mounts from him, they are
actually 7mg - 10mg and he never checked them and he appologizes for
the mistake and is willing to refund anybody who purchased these
thinking they were 24mg just send him an email. So hopefully
everything works out with this guy and I am happy to find out that his
mistake was not intentional and he is doing everything to resolve this
issue including revising his listings to either take out the weight
completely and just sell them as micro mounts or state the weight of
7mg - 10mg the choice is up to him and i am satisfied with either way
he chooses to proceed.

Re: [meteorite-list] Buyers BEWARE!!!! *** update ***

2011-06-28 Thread Dan Furlan
Dear Sir,
The seller still never checked the items before he re-sold them, yes
this is an honest mistake but very irresponsible and he sold hundreds
of these mounts with the incorrect weight and the people who bought
them paid triple the price of what they are worth retail.. If i was
him, i would of done exactly what I did today upon receiving the items
and bust a few of the mounts open and actually weigh the specimens
before selling hundreds of them.. And if i didn't own a scale i would
put it on the top of my shopping list ASAP especially before selling
any lunar material with weights in the milligrams. I don't feel i
dragged anybody through the dirt, all i did was report that he was
selling 24mg mounts that actually weighed 7-10mg. thanks to me he is
able to correct this mistake and hopefully he learns a lesson.
Furthermore people from met-list who may have purchased these mounts
can seek resolution as well. I cannot stress the importance of double
checking anything you buy to re-sell or even for personal collection.
I am sorry we do not see eye to eye on this. How would you like to
buy something that has a certain weight associated with it and when
you check it yourself you realize that the reason it weighs 2 thirds
less then the stated weight is because the seller never bothered to
weigh it?? If you wouldn't be slightly disappointed then I am sorry to
say there is something fundamentally wrong with you. I am not here to
baby sit sellers and understand their mistakes, I am here to do
business with professionals who i can trust will deliver on their
word. Like i mentioned in my previous update i am happy to see this
seller take action and revise his listings and offer resolutions. I
do not regret making my original post one bit because there are
hundreds of people out there who purchased lunar and mars material for
top dollar and didn't get what they paid for and they are entitled to
know about it. You may think I was being inconsiderate by making the
original post but in reality i was being responsible to my fellow
meteorite collectors and dealers who may have purchased these mounts
in the past assuming the weight was correct as well as any potential
buyers who had active bids on them as well. This is the price you pay
when you do business and mess up.. I am a very trusting person, and i
believe what people tell me.. but when i spend a lot of money on
something i wish to re-sell I will guarantee you 100% I am going to
double check everything to make sure it's is o.k. before i put it on
the market with my name on it.

I was eager to see your reply, Dan.

I also corresponded with your seller today. He is really a conscientious guy
with excellent feedback and and incredibly helpful attitude.

*He readily volunteered earlier to me that it was 100% his fault and told
me he would do *anything* to make you happy, and that he believes you
without questioning your integrity in the slightest and was pleased to know
the truth. Too bad all eBayers weren't so inclined.

*He also said that the person who sold them to him actually made the cases,
not him, and told him those weights and that he had no way of checking and
he never even opened a case.

*He also said that some of his auctions which still had the incorrect weight
vs. the others that never had a weight in the listing had nothing to do with
him still cheating as you construed on the list. Rather, the auctions that
were still running hadn't been changed and the ones that never had the
weights were the buy-it-nows, according to him it was just the way he had
listed them. I didn't check this but it sounds plausible..

*So, apparently, there was an honest mistake that was corrected in the most
professional manner by a simple communication. Yet you dragged this guy
across the coals in front of 1000 of his potential customers without
checking better and then you shot me as the messenger for suggesting to
communicate more with him before cryiong wolf. You even violated eBay policy
by linking his name to his username in public, though a nitpick, I am sure
it would genuinely hurt the seller if he knew it - but he's not a list
member so had no way to know or respond.

All the while your seller is apparently holding his head down embarrassed
and trying to make things right. This is the problem with a one sided story
and honestly it seems irresponsible to me on your part. Do you agree? Good
luck in your future dealings, and I hope no one does to you what you did to
him. The kicker is, the guy feels so bad about it that all he can say is
that he understands your frustration and hopes you cut him a break.

upset in learning that he got cheated out of his hard earned money.
The honest Moroccan dealers need to be concerned when somebody from
their circle of business associates is pulling scams as it has a
ripple effect on their over all image.. the same concept applies when
IMCA is concerned when one of their own isn't playing by the rules,
same principle in effect here according to me. this is my opinion and

Re: [meteorite-list] Fw: Warning about Lahcen Ait Ha

2011-06-23 Thread Dan Furlan
Dear Gary and Said Haddany,
Thank you for the update. I am glad to hear that you guys in Morocco
are helping with this situation it shows me that you are honorable
people and care about the people you do business with.  I will not
have a problem with buying from Morocco as a result because this shows
me if something does go wrong that other dealers in Morocco are
willing to help even though it is not your fault. I am not blaming or
punishing anybody i just want to know that you care when something
like this happens.  I apologize if it sounded like I was attacking all
Moroccan dealers that was not my intention.  Thanks again for the
update and I am happy to hear this story come to an end. I am also
sorry to hear that there was a thief at the Tucson show. i was not on
the met-list at the time and i would of been upset in hearing about
that story as well and i would of supported you in getting your items
back as well. I do not like people who steal plain and simple.
Please forgive me if my words sounded harsh i was upset and I am
satisfied now that the proper action is being taken.

[meteorite-list] DaG 402 and DaG 477 paired???

2011-06-19 Thread Dan Furlan
Hello everybody, does anybody know if DaG 402 is paired with DaG 477 i
found lots of pictures online of DaG 477 but i cant seem to find any
any of DaG 402.. i own some DaG 477 and they look just like the
pictures i see online etc ive had them for a while.. I also have some
DaG 402.. i am uploading stuff for sale on my website and when i
checked my DaG 402 and my DaG 477 they look practically the same..
same weathering.. same matrix, same percentage of Iron flecks same
distribution of chondrules etc... if i didn't know any better i would
think they are the same meteorite but i cant seem to find much
information on DaG 402 online and the only real difference is the
outer crusts with the level of weathering as DaG 477 seems a bit more
weathered but still the insides are almost identical...maybe im having
trouble finding pictures of DaG 402 because its not as popular as DaG
477 who knows but if anybody owns some can you send me a picture or
maybe point me to where i can see a picture online online of DaG 402
that would be great really.  I have a feeling tleshey are paired but
there is no real evidence of this online anywere and i dont want to be
making any wild assumptions until i can find out for sure from
somebody..

Re: [meteorite-list] regarding post of NWA 001 question PLUS carelessIMCA member

2011-06-15 Thread Dan Furlan
No jeff, the only coincidence is that you would respond to me now
after ignoring me for several weeks and multiple attempts in
contacting you who is the vice president of IMCA and you who are the
one who told me to re-apply when i approached IMCA to ask for my
membership back.. and since you want to bring up my personal business
in the forum why not explain why my IMCA membership was revoked to
begin with.. i refused to refund somebody a lost package and that was
my policy i stated in my listing 5 years ago that if iyou do not pay
for insurance i cannot be responsible for lost packages as it was
costing me too much money to refund every single person who claimed
they lost a package.  This year in 2011 i emailed IMCA to ask if i can
have my memership back and you yourself said i can re-apply and was
very helpful at first and told me i need to get 2 recoommendations. I
got 3 recommendations from Gary Fujihara, Jack Lacroix, and Brandon
Dunovant.. then when i asked to confirm if these recommendations came
in i got a response and then later i was completely ignored for
several weeks.  Only after a few people contacted anne black in
regards to this matter did i get response o.k. so the intergrity of
IMCA is already in question in my mind.  This issue i had with Bryan
Scarborough is 100% real and has nothing to do with me not getting my
membership and for you the vice president of IMCA to sit here and
accuse me of lying  is ridiculous.  I have all the emails from Bryan
Scarborough to prove this i have all the reciepts of the money i sent
him.. i have everything i need to make accusations... so because  you
to ignored me for 3 weeks is the main reason why i did not bother
contacting you again about an IMCA member... i could care less about
the problems you have with your IMCA members selling fake items i just
want my money back.  Anne Black the president of IMCA and your boss
also emailed all the IMCA members that she is aware of FAKE meteorites
being sold by various IMCA members one of which is Bryan Scarborough
who i had the misfortune of dealing with.  You bringing up my IMCA
application in a public forum is inappropriate and i have zero respect
for you and for IMCA because you are the vice president of IMCA and
you felt the need to accuse me of lying and bring up my personal
business in public.  You are trying to make me look bad when i have no
problem admitting i was removed from IMCA in 2005 for not refunding a
lost package i never once sold anything fake and i never once
misrepresented anything.  I am currently operating under new business
policies that i am self insuring myself and i am paying for large
orders to be insured out of my own pocket.  I would not have
re-applied to IMCA if you hadn't suggested i do so.. and to be frank
you with Jeff Kyuken i regret taking your advice because the level of
service and treatment i recieved from you and other board members was
less than standard and i have recieved better service from McDonalds.
You are aware of IMCA members who sell fake items several complaints
have been made about the legitimitacy of certain items being sold and
yet nothing has been done... I on the other hand refused to refund a
lost package and i lose my membership... how am i supposed to view
IMCA? put yourself in my shoes and especially now with the recent
dealings with Bryan Scarborough who is being investigated by private
members of the community who have quit IMCA and want to clean up the
mess of fake items being sold on the market. So i take great offence
in being accused of making this up and if i wanted to bring up the
issue i have with IMCA in regards to being treated like a second class
citizen i would of done it regardless if i got ripped off by an IMCA
member or not.. but i have integrity a word that i would not use to
describe IMCA and some of its members. I would like to apologize to
legitimate IMCA members out there as i know IMCA stands for something
great but since the Vice President of your organization wants to
accuse me of being a liar because they refused me membership i decided
to tell my side of the story. Furthermore, in regards to me not
getting my application approved this time around Anne Black your
president told me that somebody complained about the way i asked them
for a recommendation and therefore you and the rest of the baord
members discounted my 3 solid recommendations from 3 respectable
members of the community who i have done business with all of which
were surprised that i was declined... thanks for letting me have a
chance to tell my side of the story Jeff Kyuken i appreciate it.

Re: [meteorite-list] regarding post of NWA 001 question PLUS carelessIMCA member

2011-06-15 Thread Dan Furlan
Who is dragging you into anything you are the one who started this..
im the one who got ripped off not you.. you are the one who chose to
call it ironic that this happend at the same time i re-applied.. i had
no problems keeping my personal business personal but you seemed to
have the need to bring it up in public for no reason and you could of
asked me for some facts which i have provided you with off the list...
before trying to discredit me and my good name you could of simply
emailed me off the list but you chose to respond in an unprofessional
manner .. not very professional behavior from the Vice President of
IMCA.. it is very serious when there are people abusing their IMCA
memberships you and i both know i never abused anything and i decided
to stand behind my policy five years ago knowing full well that my
membership was going to be taken away, i chose to stand behind my
policy and that was my choice five years ago., me not getting my
membership and being treated poorly as well as unfairly is one thing..
but having people selling fakes is very serious and this is not
something new Jeff, IMCA has been aware for some time.. but now when
lab reports proof all the claims that have been made something is
being done... anyways i would like to inform everybody that Bryan
Scarborough has offered me a full refund and has provided me with good
customer service, this still does not justify his careless behavior
and i personally will never buy anything for him again or sell him
anything either. And i will let the people in the community decide
whether or not your post in response to my original post is
appropriate as i have done nothing wrong except bring up an issue of
getting ripped off I will continue to defend myself especially when
falsely accused by the vice president of IMCA of possibly making
this up and i will copy and paste your exact words so there is no
confusion and i quote you directly insinuating that i may be making
this stuff up because i am holding a grudge against IMCA quote: I'm
wondering if this has something to do with you being removed from the IMCA
in the past and denied re-entry again last week? It would seem to me that
the timing is ironic. those are your words not mine Jeff and you
phrased what you are trying to say very eloquently and i have provided
you with the information you needed to prove i am telling the truth
and i think you owe me an apology for bringing up my IMCA application
in public and i want to drop this issue i just dont want people to
think i am the bad guy in this whole ordeal, the only reason i am
knocking IMCA is because you insinuate i am a liar and you bring up my
business from five years ago in public to discredit me and my good
name and you mention my re-application which is a completely separate
issue and off topic.. and the reason you mention these things is to
say I am complaining about getting ripped off because i didn't get a
membership.. that doesn't make sense Jeff and maybe i am not
understanding your original post. But if you ask me you acted in
haste and responded to a serious post inappropriately and i am not
afraid to point out the facts and clear up any misunderstandings. As
we have cleared up most of this issue privately already i still feel
you need to make a public apology for insinuating things about me and
suggesting i may have ulterior motives in making a legitimate claim.
I am leaving the choice to you as i am done talking about this but i
will continue to defend myself if necessary.

[meteorite-list] regarding post of NWA 001 question PLUS careless IMCA member

2011-06-14 Thread Dan Furlan
O.k. Everybody, I have spoken to the IMCA member who tried selling me
the NWA 001,  after i confirmed with Adam Hupe and Dean Bessey and
several other people who know a lot about this meteorite and i knew
for certain it was practically impossible to have a half stone of
NWA 001 that weighed 16 grams i went ahead and i confronted this IMCA
member.  It turns out that he apparently misread the label and it
was not NWA 001 but that it was NWA 010.  This is the second critical
error this IMCA member has made.  The first major error was when i
ordered a .76 gram of lunar meteorite from him.  He sent me a .23 gram
piece instead of what i had paid for and i sent it back to him for a
refund.  His excuse was that his scale might of been off, but if that
is the case then why was this item listed on ebay several times and
one of the times it actually sold which means the buyer canceled the
transaction and/or returned the item.  Then his excuse changed after i
sent him several pictures of the piece weighed on different scales of
mine as i own over 6 scales and showed him the same weight of .23
grams on each scale.  His new excuse was that he had two pieces and
mailed me the wrong piece.  So then i said o.k. no problem mail me the
right piece and then he came up with another excuse stating that he is
not sure where the bigger piece is because his son took it.  So after
i mailed him back the item for a refund is when he tried to sell me
the NWA 001 instead of the refund which i became suspicious of when he
stated it was a half stone and only after did i confront him about it
did he tell me he made a mistake in reading the label.  Two critical
errors in a row made by an IMCA member makes me wonder a lot of
things.  I have recieved several emails asking about who this person
is and it seems that all the people who are emailing already suspected
somebody and they all suspect the same person.  I do not want to give
his name in a public format because i do not want to cause any
problems for this person and maybe both times his mistake were honest
mistakes.  I have been selling and buying meteorite and meteorite
related material for many years and I have never made such critical
errors let alone twice in a row I have always been honest and double
check everything i sell to make sure problems like this don't happen.
I feel this member has behaved very carelessly and even if these
mistakes where of an honest nature i think i never want to deal with
them again.  I am sorry that this experience has made me question the
validity of IMCA logo's and i will be extra careful in the future when
buying anything from anybody i don't know whether they are an IMCA
member or not, one of the best dealers i know isn't an IMCA member and
i never had any problems with him... I hope nobody has to go through
the same experience i am going through right now just because somebody
doesn't pay close attention to what they are doing when conducting
business.  Like i said there is a small chance that fraud was involved
but even if these were honest mistakes they are unacceptable according
to my standards and the way i do business.  Rest assured anybody out
there who deals with me i would never make such mistakes and I always
take the up-most care to ensure that what you buy from me is as
described and authentic and i double check everything before i ship it
out and i think everybody who deals with meteorites should do the same
thing.

isn't NWA 001 all cut up and from a 1.2 kg single piece.. my friend is
the one who classified it and i checked with him and he said as far as
he knows no other pieces have been found of it just the original 1.2kg
piece.. so can anybody tell me if it is possible to have a half stone

help me as the person i am dealing with is an IMCA member and makes me

Re: [meteorite-list] ad: NWA 869 .25 cents per gram

2011-06-08 Thread Dan Furlan
Hello all, thank you all for those who e-mailed me in regards to my
previous post in which i am selling NWA 869 for .25 cents. I had more
people respond to me then expected and as a result of this high demand
in such a short period of time i have to announce that the sale is
over as of today at 10:30 pm Eastern Time.. For those of you who
emailed me before June 8th 10:30pm Eastern, we will continue to close
our deals. For anybody else who is interested at this price who hasn't
emailed me already i am sorry but i am not selling anymore at this
price on this forum
as the demand is much to high and i can only fulfill orders that have
already come in or that are in the process of being made. I will post
some more stuff at unreasonably low prices again in the future, the
next meteorite i plan to sell on this forum at wholesale prices will
be Vaca Muerta!!! so keep your eyes open for my post when im ready to
sell some of it at real wholesale prices!!! thanks again all who have
responded to me.

[meteorite-list] Al haggounia 001

2011-06-07 Thread Dan Furlan
Does anybody know if Al haggounia 001 is going to have its official
classification of Aubrite changed to EL3 which seems to be appropriate
after doing much research on this meteorite.
