Re: [meteorite-list] Grasp-Clast and magnetic meteorite mounts

2023-11-01 Thread David Pensenstadler via Meteorite-list
Thanks Michael,

I have that address and have only recently been in contact with them. Some
health problems keep them from updating and using the website for
Spacetreasures. The mounts I am looking for are ideal for displaying small
meteorites.

Michael Gallant is working to support that website and expects the site to
be active in the near future.

Thanks for your reply.

Regards,

Dave

[meteorite-list] Grasp-Clast and magnetic meteorite mounts

2023-10-30 Thread David Pensenstadler via Meteorite-list
I have tried ordering some meteorite mounts from the
Spacetreasures.com website but the only payment available is through
PayPal and I do not have a PayPal account. I have tried to contact
this company through email and by phone but cannot get any response.

Does anyone know anything about this company? Are they still in
business? I have a business card from this company from orders I have
placed some years ago, but again no one answers at the email address
on the card. Apparently the parent company is Miga Research in New
Hampshire. I have called them and got their voicemail and left
messages but no one ever returns my call.

I have searched the internet for these great grasp clasp and magnetic
post holders but have had no luck in finding them anywhere except for
Space Treasures.

Any information anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Dave Pensenstadler

[meteorite-list] 50mm Sphere Collection - I am at an Impasse

2020-07-05 Thread David Deyarmin via Meteorite-list
Some of you may remember my collection is focused on 50mm meteorite spheres

I started this collection in 2006 and so far I have collected 19 meteorite
spheres and 6 meteorite related spheres

I would like to add to me collection finding suitable material to make a 50
mm sphere has become difficult

Part of my enjoyment is add new specimens to my collection but that does not
look feasible so I am at an impasse

Be patient and hope for additional material to become available, sell the
collection instead of just letting it sit on my shelf and collect dust for
the next 3 decades, let it just sit on my shelf till I die and then donate
it to a museum

Sorry, are you still talking about main mass photos? About meteorites?
If not, ignore my next phrases, and please open a new subject.

I love images on Metsoc Database and I thought the only way to add it was
via Encyclopedia of Meteorites at IMCA, but no!
When submitting a meteorite you receive a mail and are asked to add images
or additional information about what you have submitted.
And discovered that some of these images find its way to the Database.
Here: https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=68543
You may find an image via Encyclopaedia and an image via submission.

[meteorite-list] Looking to Core Bit a HUGE Iron

2018-07-20 Thread David Deyarmin via Meteorite-list
When I first started making the roughs for my 50mm sphere collection I had
a company make me a special core bit so I could drill a 57 pound Campo I
bought from ebay.

The bit worked but it was very labor intensive (it took 2 days to cut though
7.5" of metal) and in the end was not the best way to create a rough.

Looking back I wish I had taken some pictures or video of that event.

I would like to do that again to document the process so if you have a huge
iron you would like to put a 2" hole through email me.

It would have to be an iron that I do not currently have in my collection.

Most are probably asking why anyone would do that to a meteorite.

Well, I ended up selling the 57 pound Campo at a profit because the buyer
planned to use a large wood dowel rod to display it :)

I have the following remnants left over from my sphere roughs and I would
like to sell them as a lot

[meteorite-list] Am I done Collecting?

2018-07-14 Thread David Deyarmin via Meteorite-list
In 2006 I decided to collect 50mm Meteorite Spheres and the concept of my
collection was to get at least one sphere of each of the commonly known
classifications - the 4 Irons - Fine / Medium / Coarse / Coarsest, the L and
H Chondrites, a Pallasite and a Mesosiderite.

I figured along the way I would stumble across some meteorite related
material that would make an interesting sphere but in the big picture I
figured 25 spheres would be the apex of my collection.

It's been an interesting 12 years and I have been very lucky to have
obtained some of the spheres in my collection.

And with the addition of my H-6, Bondoc Mesosiderite and Sikhote Alin
Spheres I have pretty much fulfilled my original goal.

I guess in the future I will just have to pick meteorites based on a
different criteria.

I would love to add a Carbonaceous chondrite to my collection but I doubt
there is an affordable option.

If anyone has any suggestions please post them but try to remember I'm just
a blue collar worker with a modest budget, however, I do work for material
:)

So if you have something large that you need processed my saws are available
:)

[meteorite-list] Looking for Someone to Etch my 50mm Sikhote Alin Sphere

2018-07-02 Thread David Deyarmin via Meteorite-list
I sent Dmitry 3 sphere roughs last February - Bondoc Mesosiderite, NWA 8529
H6 and Sikhote Alin

I just receive the final sphere which was the SA and the etch was good but I
was hoping to get more contrast but no matter what I do I can't seem to make
it work.

I'm not sure if it is just the nature of this material of the spherical cut
of the granular planes or my lack of experience etching Sikhote Alin

If anyone in the USA is interested in trying to etch it better send an email
to bobad...@ec.rr.com

Of if you have some tip please reply to the post.

Thanks

[meteorite-list] Sikhote Alin Sphere Rough Cut Offs - 330 Grams

2018-07-01 Thread David Deyarmin via Meteorite-list
I have 330 grams of pieces that were cut from my Sphere rough when Dmitry
worked it.

Derek has authorized me to sell them as a whole lot for $1 per gram or $330

These are triangular and trapezoidal pieces that could turn a decent profit
if you have the equipment to polish and etch them

If interested send an email to bobad...@ec.rr.com

I have been getting several requests to name the dealers engaged in less
than honest business practices.  I have publicly called out those who
violated the sanctity of meteorites I was involved with in the past by
self-pairing and piggy-backing material I placed on the market. At one
point, it was almost a full-time job.  I am not interested in creating a
"Dealer hall Of Shame" list however you can put one together yourself
with a little bit of work. You would be surprised at the number of
dealers who are engaged in deceptive trade practices.

I found 108 violations out of the 265 lunar meteorites currently listed
on eBay by simply cross referencing the Meteoritical Bulletin.  There
are a lot more than 108 if unclassified material with no numbers is
taken into account.

For NWA material, the Meteortical Bulletin will assist in providing you
with a list of dealers to avoid.  Carefully write down the NWA numbers
in question and enter them into the Meteoritical Bulletin search text field.

Link to the meteoritical Bulletin search page:

https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/

Things to look out for in the bulletin.

If there is more material by weight available on the market than what is
listed in the bulletin, then there is fraud taking place.

If the number of complete stones listed in the Bulletin under a
particular NWA number is exceeded, then you are looking at another case
of self-pairing which is also fraud.

If you are not provided with a complete chain of custody back to the
persons name in the bulletin who submitted the meteorite for study, then
it is not worth pursuing.

If you type in the NWA number or name and no data shows up, it means the
stone is not official and has not been approved.

It is interesting to see who made the list of dealers to avoid!

Happy hunting,

Adam

Thanks, Mike, I'd go even further in saying sadly 99% of the "meteorites"
circulating freely in and from China are terrestrial rocks! The real Nantan

Dear List;

Yes, I'm still around, just taking an extended vacation from being a pain in
the postier.

August 21st. is a  total eclipse. It is causing the motels in Casper and Lander
to be booked full already.
Rock Springs, (here where I am) is located about a hundred miles from good
viewing at South Pass where it is over fifteen miles from the nearest lit light
bulb.   It is expected to be 99% total from Pacific Springs rest area location
on WY highway 28 at the afore mentioned South Pass.

Sweetwater County Travel and Tourism is planning on doing something, maybe some
field trips, or ?

I will make a few more posts as the event comes along time wise.

[meteorite-list] A Comet Strikes The Earth Booklet

2016-12-13 Thread David Pensenstadler via Meteorite-list
I have a few booklets of "A Comet Strikes The Earth" by H. H.
Nininger. These are the small 4 in. x 6 in. booklets with a fragment
of the meteorite from Meteor Crater attached. (1969 printing).

These booklets are fairly rare and will make great Christmas gifts.

Please email me at dfp...@comcast.net if interested. Price $15.00 each.

No need of a degree in geology...just read.
Visit as museums as you can that takes care of meteorites.
Visit Ensishem, Munich and Tucson shows.
I'm sure that before completing this simple list you will be able to
recognize a meteorite.

A real meteorite, not the rocks showed in your images!

I need not be cautioned. There are plenty of liars, or, otherwise,
misinformed persons in the world, feasibly, and that is about as
scientific a truth as one can get. All your various claims about metal
flecks, scratch tests being necessary are plainly fallacious, hence
your conclusions based on my improper procedure for not following them
is as well. I am sure you all are confident that, at least, for
contesting this, even if you are plainly being disingenuous, plainly
acting the fools, or tricksters, levaraging your age, knowledge, or
experience, to misinform people. It is fine. I know what was done to
Steve Curry, and I know, a freemason grocer I know who is a piece of
_, as it so happens, might like to inform me that what was done to
Curry will be done to me, as he informs me about his taste for sweet
potatoes flavoured with Curry (that grocer's name is Michael Garvin
and he is a person who displays his bigotry on this shoulder).
kind regards and thank you for the insult Michael Farmer, yes I do
love the Nigerians but I am not them and when you define scam you
will see that metal flecks and suggesting a granite meteorite is
impossible, and the need for scratch tests and specific gravity tests
clearly equates with such, you bully

he's correct, there are no granite meteorites. You would do well to
follow his advice. My own opinion is that you have some low resolution
photos of rusty rocks which I'm doubtful are meteorites. You'll need
to shoot higher resolution images under better (try outdoors) lighting
for anyone to make a possible confirmation. Your best bet is to grind
off an edge of one of them with coarse sandpaper or a diamond file to
see inside. If you find silvery, metallic flecks - NOT mineral
crystals - scattered about the rock's matrix then let us know.
In the meantime I would caution you against taking up the martyr of
truth vs. scientific establishment approach.

did not even exist, which I believe Geoff Notkin has reported included
the heads of the Catholic church at one point historically. I get that
scientists, like you seem to me to, might prefer to discredit the
possibility than be honest, yet, again, it is what it is. My previous
statements are what they are. You can call them what you want, at the
behest of yourself or your friends or whoever motivates you to do what
you do. Of course, oddly enough, you seemingly disingenuous people are
leaning into this, and seem prepared to throw your all at me in such a
muckracking match, in lieu of the professionals. Really, I have some
emails from them, so it is the same. You all are what you are, the
rock is what it is (as previously described), and I am what I am, and
maybe I should have not been provoked by your message, and ignored it,
but, I have already written this and the send button is in sight, so
do not fight. I know how great you all are. I have explained what you
are doing. I don't know why. It does protect your financial interests,

I am pretty sure this is a satirical website.

The World Weekly News was my favorite pastime while standing in the
checkout line at the supermarket. I learned plenty and I'm certain I
 would
not have found these important stories anywhere else:

Hitler Seen Riding a Camel by the Pyramids (with photos!)

 The Amazing Bat Boy sightings

The sordid antics of The Creepy Nils Farbu

Alien Visits White House (photos with the President!)

 and so on...

Beyond satire and into the realm of pure BS. Sadly, the readership votes
 :(

Top 10 Biggest Meteor Strikes in History

Our beloved blue planet gets pelted with debris from space all the time
but, since most of it burns up or break apart in the atmosphere, it's
usually not a problem. Even when one does make it to the ground, they
are rarely much larger than a small rock, minimizing the damage they're
 capable of inflicting.

Then, of course, there is that once-in-an-eon occasion where something
very very large makes it through intact, and this can really do some
damage. Fortunately, such hits are extremely rare, but they are worth
noting, if only to serve as reminders of the power of the stars to undo
the normal routine here on Earth, with little more than a few minutes'
warning. So where — and when — did these monsters hit? Let's take a
look at the geological records, and see.

[meteorite-list] Life on Mars? (Again) Tissint

2014-12-04 Thread David R. Vann via Meteorite-list
Thought this might be of interest:
This is from Laboratory Equipment, but it is making the rounds of such
rags. Let's see if I beat Paul H. on this one. ;)
If you are interested in the original article, and do not have access,
please contact me off-list.

Did Mars ever have life? Does it still? A meteorite from Mars has reignited
the old debate. An international team that includes scientists from EPFL has
published a paper in the scientific journal Meteoritics and Planetary
Sciences, showing that Martian life is more probable than previously
thought.
So far, there is no other theory that we find more compelling, says
Philippe Gillet, director of EPFL's Earth and Planetary Sciences Laboratory.
He and his colleagues from China, Japan and Germany performed a detailed
analysis of organic carbon traces from a Martian meteorite, and have
concluded that they have a very probable biological origin. The scientists
argue that carbon could have been deposited into the fissures of the rock
when it was still on Mars by the infiltration of fluid that was rich in
organic matter.
Ejected from Mars after an asteroid crashed on its surface, the meteorite,
named Tissint, fell on the Moroccan desert on July 18, 2011, in view of
several eyewitnesses. Upon examination, the alien rock was found to have
small fissures that were filled with carbon-containing matter. Several
research teams have already shown that this component is organic in nature.
But they are still debating where the carbon came from.
Maybe biological, but not from our planet
Chemical, microscopic and isotope analysis of the carbon material led the
researchers to several possible explanations of its origin. They established
characteristics that unequivocally excluded a terrestrial origin, and showed
that the carbon content were deposited in the Tissint's fissures before it
left Mars.
The researchers challenged previously described views (Steele et al.,
Science, 2012) proposing that the carbon traces originated through the
high-temperature crystallization of magma. According to the new study, a
more likely explanation is that liquids containing organic compounds of
biological origin infiltrated Tissint's mother rock at low temperatures,
near the Martian surface.
These conclusions are supported by several intrinsic properties of the
meteorite's carbon, e.g. its ratio of carbon-13 to carbon-12. This was found
to be significantly lower than the ratio of carbon-13 in the CO2 of Mars's
atmosphere, previously measured by the Phoenix and Curiosity rovers.
Moreover, the difference between these ratios corresponds perfectly with
what is observed on Earth between a piece of coal - which is biological in
origin - and the carbon in the atmosphere. The researchers note that this
organic matter could also have been brought to Mars when very primitive
meteorites - carbonated chondrites - fell on it. However, they consider this
scenario unlikely because such meteorites contain very low concentrations of
organic matter.
Insisting on certainty is unwise, particularly on such a sensitive topic,
warns Gillet. I'm completely open to the possibility that other studies
might contradict our findings. However, our conclusions are such that they
will rekindle the debate as to the possible existence of biological activity
on Mars - at least in the past.

Hello All,

Is there a known (or a perceived) problem with the eBay Global Shipping
Program?  Should I avoid using it?

I've received a request from a potential overseas bidder to revise my
auctions and to not use eBay's Global Shipping Program.

Here is the exact wording of the request:

Would you please consider not using the Global Shipping Program. You may
not realise but this Program is a nightmare for Overseas buyers. $ out of 4
auctions I won with this Program the sellers all cancelled auctions and
relisted under normal shipping as for some reason it always charges double
for shipping and even charges sellers apparently.

Is this a legitimate request, or should I be suspicious?

Hello Listers

I was contacted by this ebay buyer horrocks12312 about a meteorite. he had
also made some bids on a item, and then he made a retraction saying that the
description of the auction was changed, when it wasn't. I have a zero
tolerance to retracting when there is no follow up and also the when the
individual lied about the retraction. Lastly, this individual has two buys
and hasn't bought a meteorite under that ebay name, so it seems, they no
nothing about meteorites, or up to no good.

Re: [meteorite-list] Ebays new shipping policy

2013-05-05 Thread David Griffith
Is this new Ebay shipping rip-off to be a compulsory thing or do buyers and
sellers have options? I just basically decided against purchasing 3
different specimens from eBay because each would have cost about 20$ to
ship! If this becomes the norm, my buying and collecting days are over. I
can't afford that kind of additional expense.

 Hi Mike and all!

I just googled online auction sites and found about a dozen listed.

I frequent one other one that is called GunBroker. People often auction off
all sorts of things. So why not meteorite sales there???
Gold and Silver coins and other collectables do good there... I am just
curious. Ebay has a killer share of the on line auction market, but there
are others out there. Maybe the market has been tested and failed...not
sure. Maybe Ebay and Amazon are too good to walk away from or too easy. I
say spread your wings!

89.3 gram shield shaped beauty with a frothy back.

If you are interested in adding this fine stone to your collection,

Re: [meteorite-list] New Meteorite Found

2013-04-25 Thread David Libuszowski
Just wanted to share a pretty recent fall meteorite I found while hunting for
meteorites in the desert using the Minelab GPX5000. Has a really black fusion
crust, and performed an xrf analysis of it, as shown in the pics. I have to say
this is one of the most magnetic pieces I have found, besides a solid iron.

Re: [meteorite-list] Roach Dry Lake Finds

2013-04-13 Thread David Libuszowski
Hi Adam and all,
As you enter the dry lake bed from Primm, on the west side of the railroad
tracks, there are signs posted no trespassing, from Federal Avation Admin. ,
but like you said, on the east side of the railroad tracks, on BLM land you can
access the other part of the lake bed. They have put a hold on the development
of the airport, when the economy took a dump, but they still have all the signs
in place.
Like Verish says, I believe the weathering effects bring up new meteorites on
the dry lake beds. I can contest to that also from hunting Stewart Dry Lake
Bed, and finding meteorites in a location I hunted the previous year, and
finding the stones emerging from a dried out hole where the rain collected.
Dave

I thought most of Roach Dry Lake was closed due to building an airport or some
environmental impact study.   I saw road blocks a couple hundred yards into the
dry lake bed that crossed the entire thing the last time I was there.  There
was still access to the smaller part of the lake bed on the other side of the
railroad tracks.

It is interesting that meteorites and artifacts are being protected by our
federal government yet they are allowing other interests to crush and pave over
all them.   I hope the 10.1 lbs lunar meteorite that someone was destined to
find doesn't end mutilated up under a bulldozer.

Hey Everyone,
I Got out today with Richard Garcia (kgmrg), we searched Roach Dry Lake Bed,
which is located right next to Primm, NV. This is a hard hit area, and getting
real difficult to find anything there nowadays. For the whole day I found only
one 6.38 gram meteorite. The grasshoppers are out in full effect, and weather
is getting warm.

Re: [meteorite-list] I will be in Barcelona next week

2013-02-22 Thread David Allepuz

Hello from Barcelona !
Well, near Barcelona, just 20Km apart.

At the Museu Blau (Blue Museum) you can find all the Catalonian falls and
some Spanish ones.

There is also some usual museum meteorites, Campo's, Gibeon's, etc.
They are all together in a display at the end of the exposition.
Last summer we (www.cazameteoritos.es and www.meteorits.cat ) were
credited to take photos of all meteorites and weight them.

It was a great day, holding in our hands historical Catalan meteorites !
You can take photos without flash.

I can also recomend you to visit the CosmoCaixa Museu de la Ciència (
CosmoCaixa Science Museum), at his central hall is a great exposition of
larger Gibeons.

And at the exit hall you can find one solitary Allende.

If you need any more information, please contact me off-list

Hi List,

Here are the Met´s:

(all pieces are still for sale also if you see at my side the red Not
available)

1) 81g oriented Sikhote alin

the 1. is a 81g oriented Sikhote alin. The SA has for his size very nice
Regmaglypts. Because it is oriented it has also flowlines on the crust.

2) 277g Sikhote alin with natural hole

the 2. SA has 277g. It has also many many Regmaglypts and at some areas also

side of the stone.

So all in all a very nice collection piece.
