Dear Guido:

As a relative newcomer to the field I feel you are basing your doom-
and-gloom prophesy on recent events only, without looking at the big
picture. You may not be aware of the fact that -- in nearly all cases
-- the price of meteorites has been rising *steadily* for as long as
there has been a market for them. There are, however, exceptions: In
1998 I saw Zagami sell for $1,700/gram; two years ago I saw it (not
selling) for $400/gram.

In the late 1960s you could acquire a beautiful Canyon Diablo with a
hand-painted H.H. Nininger number for dollars a pound. In the late
1990s, the few existing wholesale dealers could barely find buyers for
stunning sculpted Gibeons at $35/kilo. Now it's $500/kilo if you're
very lucky, and the price has gone up incrementally every year; a
result of supply and demand, not because of some sort of media
sensation. The same thing has happened with space memorabilia,
military history artifacts, transportation memorabilia, and probably
every other collectible of which there is a limited supply.

While I agree with you that that there are many more amateurs out in
the field looking for the California fall -- no argument there, it's
obvious -- how much would an example of Mighei cost you today, if you
could find one? I wouldn't be surprised if it was pretty close to
$1,000 a gram. I wouldn't pay $1,000 for a little scrap of this new
fall; I'd much rather have a a multi-kilo Campo del Cielo, but that's
me. Some collectors will be ecstatically happy to pay up for a
witnessed fall American carbonaceous chondrite, and god bless 'em.
Every collector's passion is different.

There are more meteorite collectors today than at any time in history.
Value is primarily determined by rarity and I am quite sure you
appreciate how rare meteorites are. The Internet is primarily
responsible for growth in the popularity of meteorites, as are books
like the excellent Rocks from Space, my television show, and the
frequent high-profile natural history auctions by I.M. Chait,
Heritage, and other houses. In the pre-Internet days it was extremely
difficult to connect with other collectors; you might happen upon
Blaine Reed's small ad in Astronomy magazine, or find a rock shop
that carried a couple of modest specimens, but there was no meteorite
community. The Internet made it possible for enthusiasts to find one
another, and the field blossomed -- very rapidly -- between 1997 and
the early 2000s. That was *way* before any significant media interest.

Increased awareness means more finds, and at least ten important new
meteorites (that I know of) have come to light as a direct result of
my TV show and other media attention. That's a good thing. New finds
will continue to be made and new collectors will continue to come into
the fold. Meteorite collecting is no longer a weird niche market that
nobody has heard of.

Love it or leave it, but there's no point in grousing about it. Cool
things become popular. That's just the way it goes.

2012-02-08 Thread David R Childs

Dear All,

Just watched a piece on The BBC News about the donation.
It was shown being placed in an MRI Scanner, searching for possible trapped
gasses.

Also shown was an auctioneer from one of the big houses in The UK. He was
asked to value it, but didn't actually do it, instead said that meteorites
can fetch upwards of £20,00O, and the Lunar piece they sold a year ago went
for nearly a quarter of a Million!

Dear Mark and list members,

It's always interesting and amusing to read what people in the past
thought about the origin
of meteorites. Here some examples from 19th Century editions of
'Scientific American':

In 1848 C.U. Shepard believed in the terrestrial origin of meteorites.
Meteorites were believed to rain down from metallic meteoric dust clouds
in the upper atmosphere because of the influence of magnetic storms.
The dust clouds were thought to have formed from ashes and terrestrial
matter which had 'mechanically' been 'elevated' by volcanoes and
tornadoes.

http://www.nature.com/scientificamerican/journal/v4/n12/pdf/scientificamerican12091848-94b.pdf
(Scientific American, 9 Dec 1848)

In 1876 Proctor believed that iron meteorites were ejected from a sun
during solar outbursts

whereas Moigno believed them to be remains of ancient 'used-up worlds'.

It may be, as Mr. Proctor has suggested, that some of them,
the siderites es

pecially, have been ejected from our own or some other sun,
by some of those tremendousoutbursts of solar energy
which we occasionally observe with our spectroscopes ; or
they may have originated, as Moigno argues, in the cracking
to pieces of some old and used-up world.
(from Scientific American, 19 August 1876 ;
http://www.nature.com/scientificamerican/journal/v35/n8/pdf/scientificamerican08191876-119a.pdf
 )

'Old worlds' indeed, but not 'used-up'...

Unfortunately there is one truly 'used-up world' in the solar system ...
our own.

Furthermore, 19th Century comparisons are amusing, like these ones:

white as chalk, black as coal and Orgueil is 'a mass of rather
coherent garden soil'

The aerolite of Bishopsville, S. C., though covered with the
invariable black crust,

is internally almost as white as chalk, and as light as
pumice ; that of Kold Bokkeveld,South Africa, on the other
hand, resembles a piece of anthracite coal more than any
thing else; and that of Orgueil, a mass of rather coherent
garden soil.

Must be the most expensive 'garden soil' in the universe

Unfortunately many (carbonaceous) meteorites end up becoming soil when
plowed under

in the fields because they couldn't be found quickly enough.

This might have happened to the potential Geislingen meteorites which my
German meteorite friends and me were eagerly trying to find in January ...
in vain. (Well, not 'in vain' actually because although we didn't find
meteorites, we found new friends and experienced cooperation and community
... thus immaterial gratification ... priceless !!!)

Too often meteorites are not found (on time) because important information
does not flow freely to those (not primarily driven by the 'profit
motive') enthusiasts who are willing to spend their time and energy on
finding the freshly fallen specimens before planet earth's aggressive
oxygen and humidity start their attack on the stony or iron 'aliens'.

It's always an unbearable thought that freshly fallen meteorites in
developed countries just rot away unnoticed because some people are not
willing to cooperate for a 'higher meteoritic goal' ... but that is
another never-ending story.

Have a nice Sunday while scanning the archives for interesting articles!

There is much more to be rediscovered...

I know that this is off topic, but not really considering all the valuable
data

that those brave Apollo Astronauts brought back for science.

And even today the rocks are being studied and the radionuclide's detected
tell us the age and also the resources that we might obtain should the
United States ever return and complete what we should have done decades
ago. And in a way it does relate to our quest of and classification of
lunar meteorites, without that data that they brought back, comparisons
and identifications of lunar meteorites would be harder than they are now.

The issue that bothers me is the fact that Dr. Ed Mitchell, sixth man to
set foot on the Moon was sued by the United States Goverment for having
and wanting to sell a DAC Camera that would otherwise have been destroyed
on the Moon.

All Apollo Lunar Astronauts were given the incentive to retain items from
the LM if they met weight requirements as per the Mission Commander's
approval at the time of the mission.

So for four decades he held on to this camera... Till he decided to
auction it in his now 80 years of life.

NASA and our Government then sued him for possession. And under that
duress he

surrendered the camera.

This is a travesty, done to a great man, recipient of the Medal of
Freedom, And
the lawsuit is a disgrace,,, Shame on NASA and our Government for treating
him so.

So with that in mind I posted a video on Youtube with a call for public
action to rectify this disgrace.

First see this one as background:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bttkWVERGVs

Then my video with a call for action:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AH3DtuH_-5s

Legal actions by our Government for seizure of such artifacts, due to
their loss of records affects all that have Apollo memorabilia.

And of the over 1000 members of this list there may be some that have such
artifacts.

I have two Apollo artifacts that have no record of transfer. One was
given to me by a personal friend Eugene Shoemaker, and the other I won in
an Ebay auction. Most true Apollo Mission artifacts that are being
bought, sold and auctioned are in the same category, no records of
transfer.

It is events like this lawsuit against Ed Mitchell that really upsets my
trust in our Government, which seems to be out of control... As if there
are things more important than improving our economy and doing some good
for all.

Steve

P.S. Hope I have not taxed anyone with my long OT post.

Video Documents Three-Year Trek on Mars by NASA Rover
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
October 10, 2011

While NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity was traveling from
Victoria crater to Endeavour crater, between September 2008 and August
2011, the rover team took an end-of-drive image on each Martian day that
included a drive. A new video compiles these 309 images, providing an
historic record of the three-year trek that totaled about 13 miles (21
kilometers) across a Martian plain pocked with smaller craters.

The video featuring the end-of-drive images is now available online, at
http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/videogallery/index.html?media_id=114782241
.

It shows the rim of Endeavour becoming visible on the horizon partway
through the journey and growing larger as Opportunity neared that goal.
The drive included detours, as Opportunity went around large expanses of
treacherous terrain along the way.

The rover team also produced a sound track for the video, using each
drive day's data from Opportunity's accelerometers. The low-frequency
data has been sped up 1,000 times to yield audible frequencies.

The sound represents the vibrations of the rover while moving on the
surface of Mars, said Paolo Bellutta, a rover planner at NASA's Jet
Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., who has plotted many of
Opportunity's drives and coordinated production of the video. When the
sound is louder, the rover was moving on bedrock. When the sound is
softer, the rover was moving on sand.

Opportunity and its rover twin, Spirit, completed their three-month
prime missions on Mars in April 2004. Both rovers continued for years of
bonus, extended missions. Both have made important discoveries about wet
environments on ancient Mars that may have been favorable for supporting
microbial life. Spirit stopped communicating in 2010. Opportunity
continues its work at Endeavour. NASA will launch the next-generation
Mars rover, car-size Curiosity, this autumn, for arrival at Mars' Gale
crater in August 2012.

JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena,
manages the Mars Exploration Rover Project for the NASA Science Mission
Directorate, Washington. More information about the rovers is online at:
http://www.nasa.gov/rovers and http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov . You can
also follow the mission on Facebook at
http://www.facebook.com/marsrovers and on Twitter at

The depression is an impact feature, by far the largest relavtive to the
size of the body it hit (Vesta). It is possible that the grooves are
related to this impact (just a guess).

Larry

Howdy List,

While the 'big depression' on the Vestan south pole has been a major
focus...what about those wild grooves???

I see visions of a spinning Vesta grinding against another twin, gouging
grooves in a dancea low gravity parlay perhaps analogous to a
high-school bump and grind, the two spinning against each otherwhich
begs the obvious question: where is the partner in grind??

Should we not expect to eventually find trailing remnants of both in
those

tell-tale grooves?

Hi Mike:

I assume that you meant to say slick (hope that I am not putting words

I have played this video several times and it is clear how much can be
said about Vesta by the narrator without giving any scientific
interpretation of it! I realize that there is always the mandate that
little is said without an official press release or the published papers
with the first results, but to say only that there is a depression at
the south pole, a huge crater (known for many years) and probably the
main
source of most HED meteorites, leaves one wanting for at least some
interpretation of what one is seeing.

Hello all, one week after getting stones in Kenya last sunday I bought
pieces of my househitter from Muguga which had been sent all night by bus
from Mombassa, I flew to Mexico and this sunday bought another stone, a
househitter from San Juan Ocotan, Zapopan, Guadalajara.

This meteorite 1,369 grams. This location is on the edge of the city, next
to a massive air force base.

It fell in September 2007, exact date unknown. It fell at ~3:00 am and
smashed through a very poor house which had a tile roof covered with a
tarp and smashed into mud bricks. The stone still has marks of the blue
tarp, and the tile and mud bricks embedded in the stone. It was used for
two years to hold open a shop door by the homeowner and seen by another
man who recognized it as something special and acquired it. He finally
emailed me asking if it was a meteorite.

I flew to Guadalajara and bought it this weekend. It is in perfect
condition, never damaged or cleaned thankfully, and while the owners
family wanted to smash it to see inside, he never did!

Quite a score, a Mexican hammerstone that appears to be a L or LL3!

Not for sale

He is delusional and refuses to accept the truth. I think it best to ignore

Itokowa as Doug has said, is only a couple of blocks' size, and I certainly
have not heard of Itokowa suggested as source of anything, except the

I would suggest ther source of LL's would MORE than likely be from Vesta, as
it seems that Vesta is the best candidate for a lot more as well.

Isn't this exciting news Al Martin!

Al from wikipedia:
S-type asteroids are of a siliceous (stony) composition, hence the name.
Approximately 17% of asteroids are of this type, making it the second most
common after the C-type.

and from the Nature link:
S-types are commonly found on the inner fringes of the belt,

So it is not fair to call puny Itokawa even one of many parent body
asteroids; only that a reasonable composition match for LL chondrites was
found in what might be representative of its surface dust. The asteroid
is only 2 X 2 X 6 city blocks in size or so ... but interesting since its
orbit gets closer to our neighborhood.

There is a case for all Vestoids being from Vesta, but such a common
origin has not (yet?) been identified for S-type asteroids. With the
exception of Vesta, no asteroid parent bodies are suspected with any
certainty to be such grand-parent bodies. Grandparent, meaning it is
directly linked ... rather than one of a billion possibilities. It is
extremely unlike that all LL's are from Itokawa and probably unlikely
that *any* are from it as well.

from, URL ID, etc etc. Zilch!

They are certaily breaching copyright laws.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Question meteoritesaler.com

I tried to contact them but there contact link is not valid. Does anybody
know

how to contact the person(s) that run this website:

http://meteoritesaler.com

They have been publishing copyrighted material and some of the closing
auction
prices are inaccurately and ridiculously low. I had a customer thinking I
was
asking too much, even when offering an item way below wholesale because of
this
website. It is hard enough to break even these days and I don't need a
site

publishing inaccurate auction results.

Best Regards,

Adam

Hi Dan,

The Al-Haggounia issue comes up here regularly from time to time and
it has been discussed extensively. The general consensus is that
NonCom works like Entmoot. Eventually the classification will get
changed - but nobody knows when.

In the meantime, for your own use, call it an EL3 and nobody will fuss
you for it, regardless of what the Met Bulletin says. ;)

If you search back through the List archive, there is a discussion
about this same issue that took place about a month or two ago.

Best regards,

Does anybody know if Al haggounia 001 is going to have its official
classification of Aubrite changed to EL3 which seems to be appropriate
after doing much research on this meteorite.

Re: [meteorite-list] Moroccan business meteorite is suffering

2011-05-30 Thread David R Childs

Dear All,

I suspect the reason the prices are higher is that supplies are drying up
because of various conflicts (Political or Otherwise) affecting the ability
to go find them. Border controls are tighter getting in/out, now affecting
the movements of locals (Nomads/Berbers). For what it's worth, that's my
take on it.

Cheers

Dear All,
yes prices are too high now...
And worst is that Maroccan dealers ask much more than US or European dealers
can sell here.

Interesting will be to see this year prices in Ensisheim.
