[meteorite-list] Seeking inexpensive samples to give to students during programs for IYA 2009

2009-03-11 Thread Frederick J. Wallace
Hi,
I'm a teacher in CT and I'm doing a bunch of talks this year at museums and
schools for IYA 2009 and I hoped I could find someone who might have some
quantities of small samples for students and teachers at a reasonable price.
Samples can be tektites or meteorites. I am hoping to get at least 100 but
would like to keep the price at $100 or less since I'm buying these myself
and am vounteering to give the talks (i.e.: not being paid!). Any help would
be appreciated. Thanks!

[meteorite-list] Meteorite ID suggestions sought

2008-04-06 Thread Frederick J. Wallace
Hi,
I am a HS science teacher and originally trained as a geologist
(mineralogy). I recently went out with my new GMT to Tucson, AZ and
tried searching in the Willcox Playa area for a day. I was accompanied
by some relatives and they searched with magnets. I didn't detect much
with thte GMT but was amazed at the quantity of strongly magnetic
material collected. I removed some obvious minerals (goethite, limonite,
magnetite (some with large crystals!)) and the obvious rust from human
origin but there are still some rocks that defy my initial ID. There was
also no obvious fusion crust or other telltale signs (flow lines, large
chondrules, etc.). I have also not search much of the material with the
GMT and if there is a technique for using that to tell them apart I will
try that but was initially interested in trying my geology skills. I
hope to have time this April to try to compare known meteorites with
some magnetic 'earth' material from nearby my house to use as a
reference for going through the material with the GMT if needed.
When searching through material to try to ID a meteorite from earth
rocks are there any additional hints anyone can give. If I get enough
hints to try I will write an article about this for the Meteorite
magazine (if one hasn't been written already - I don't remember it
though). Thanks for any help you can give!
Feel free to contact me at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] or on this list. Thanks!

Re: [meteorite-list] Metal detector and Tucson collecting advice requests

2007-11-13 Thread Frederick J. Wallace
Hi,
I'm a science teacher and have been collecting meteorites for decades
and have amassed a wonderful teaching collection. The one thing I
haven't done yet is search for my own meteorites and I'd like to do that
now. I visited the White's dealer in CT and he recommended the MXT or
DFX models and I wondered what people thought of those models compared
to the more highly recommended Gold Master model. It doesn't appear that
there is much difference between models but I'm sure there is some. All
models seem capable of detecting iron and nickel as well as other
minerals found in meteorites. I'd like to get the best model I can
afford for the job so if I don't find anything I don't have to blame it
on the detector. I majored in Geology and did quite a lot of field
collecting and work and am really looking forward to trying my hand at
this. I also will be traveling to Tucson, AZ to visit relatives in a few
months and hoped that if you have searched for meteorites near Tucson
you might be willing to e-mail me about your experiences and share
location info. and/or advice.
Thanks for any help you can give!
