[meteorite-list] Authenticating Meteorite Laboratories

2003-03-21 Thread GShanos
Dear List Members:

Hi, its Greg Shanos from sunny Florida.  I was at a Rock & Mineral Show last weekend and had several people approach me as to whether they have an authentic meteorite.  I informed them that I would obtain information regarding which labs authenticate meteorites for free?  Any snail mail addresses.  Thank you.

[meteorite-list] Australia

2002-11-19 Thread GShanos
Dear List Members:

Slighly off topic, what are the GPS coordinates for Adelaide Australia?  My wife and I will be in Woomera on December 4th to witness a total solar eclipse in the outback!
I wish to develop a star chart for evening observing.  I require some coordinates for the southwestern part of the continent.  Any information is appreciated.  Thank you.

[meteorite-list] LEONID METEORS FROM SARASOTA, FL

2002-11-19 Thread GShanos
Dear List Members:

Sorry, for the late reply.  I observed 164 meteors from 4:30am to 6:00am from Longboat Key (Sarasota) Florida.  I was on the beach, facing east, with the moon  behind me.  Temperature was "cold" by Florida standards- a whopping 54 F.  Perfectly clear skies since a high pressure front moved in.

I witnessed over 600 Leonids in 2 hours on Nov 19, 2001 under a moonless clear night in Chiefland, Florida (near Gainesville).  The leonid storm will live forever in my memories.

[meteorite-list] Murchison Amino Acids

2002-10-10 Thread GShanos
Dear Johnathan, Bernd and List:

Jonathan inquired:

> Does anybody know the names of the unidentified amino
> acids in Murchison? Do they even have names?

Hello Jonathan and List,
Just in case you wonder why nobody has responded yet. I think
this is due to an "unwritten law" that we should not poach in
someone else's game preserve :-) The undisputed expert in this
field has always been Greg Shanos, so I guess everyone is waiting
for him to chime in. Yoohoo, Greg, where are yoo?

Bernd

Greg Shanos replies:
Bernd, thank you very much for the compliment.  I have scanned and made .pdf files of all my articles on Allende and Murchison published in Meteorite!   The following emails with attachments contain these articles for your reading pleasure.  They are safe to download, tested and virus free.  I you have any furthur questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

2002-01-20 Thread GShanos
Dear List members:

This is slightly off topic but I know many of you out there also collect fossils on the side.  I recently purchased an aquatic reptile of the Triassic period called a Keichousaurus hui.  I am having trouble finding any real scientfic information on the web.  Does anyone have any information on this incredible fossil?  Any websites, books, monographs, primary literature articles etc.  Any help is appreciated.

[meteorite-list] My First Specimens

2002-01-06 Thread GShanos

Dear List Members:

My first meteorite was actually a package of three irons. In October 1985, I
saw an ad in SKY & TELESCOPE by Robert Haag for meteorites! I never knew
that normal people were able to own meteorites. I assumed they were
"untouchable" like the moon rocks. Only available to museums and
universities. Well, I sent away for his catalog and purchased three irons
approximately 100 grams each of an Odessa complete slice, Canyon Diablo
individual and Henbury individual. All three for only $60 including
shipping!!! Ah, those were the days. My next purchase was a 1gram fragment
of Murchison for only $20. When I weighted it on my balance, it was actually
2.1 grams. The rest is history...

I was only 25 years old when I purchased these specimens. I can remember the
pre-internet days where one never saw how the meteorite actually appeared. I
too liked David News descriptions, choice, suberb, etc It was a real thrill
opening up the package and seeing the specimen for the first time. All
specimens received where top quality meteorites, I rarely ever sent any back.
Today, one knows how the meteorite appears before purchase- still a thrill
in my mind. Take care.
