[meteorite-list] He did it!

2005-12-01 Thread Gtceb
Greetings list:
As I mentioned in my last SSTTEEVEY missive, my worst fears have been ONCE
AGAIN realized...Our favorite list Studmuffin and resident meteorite scourge,
SSTTEEEVEY, has once again taken a hammer to a pristine individual. Snyder
Hill..oh, hold on, I am sure it was A. Broken in transit B. Fell of the table
C. Fell out of his pocket D. Left on the roof of his car on the way to his
therapy appointment E. Kicked by the dog of F. Hit by the snow plow.
A well known list member alerted me with this very well written e-mail:

The inevitable has happened. The meteorite collecting communities biggest
embarrassment has started hacking up Bob Haags Snyder Hill meteorite.

See it here:

ategoryZ3239QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

While we are all free to do what we want with our meteorite property,
SSTTEEVEY once again strikes a bad chord by hacking up another one...Nice work
SSTTEVEY. Hope the $20 you get is real important!

Unfortunately, the bragging meteorite studmuffin is back and in business...
SSTTEEVVEY, further to your exceptionally well written note, I am quite sure
you hoodwinked ol' Bob with your superior meteoritic and financial prowess

subject line My big steal. I am sure Bob did too. I am equally sure from
reading your new posts that during your unplanned list downtime you brushed

4. Writing With Some Point In Mind
5. Master The Obvious
6. and finally everyone's favorite You Too Can Bore The Crap Out Of A

My great fear is that this main mass will go into the SSTTEEVEY black hole
and come out in fragments, slices, micros...dropped, broken in transitsoon
to be seen on EBAY touted poorly along with your assumed great affiliation
with Bob Haag..

Dearest Mikey:

You are welcome to your opinion, but because I inadvertently left my name
(Terry) off the list does not make me a coward or because I write to stop the
list buf*o*n from writing does not (at least from 99.9% of the e-mail I get
thanking me for my posts) make me an a-hole. But again, you, like me, are
welcome
to an opinion. PS, my list post was an opinion, hint, hint ;-)

This list is about meteorites and related matters. Lets get back to that

That is exactly the reason why I write. To stop the moronic BIG SSTTEEVEY
posts. Check the archives.

Since you have clearly been hiding under your wet blanket for the last few
years, check out the list archives for some insight into kind and gentle, MR.
would-not-do-anything-wrong BIG SSTTEEVEY.

All the people that continue to demean Steve are doing so to try and inflate
their own pathetic egos.

Wrong again STTEEVEY friend. Trying to protect a subject I am quite fond of
(meteorites in case you did not know) , including this list and the brainpower
behind it. My ego is well in check and very unpathetic. I own a world class
meteorite collection and retired two years ago at age 43 after running a few
companies. I care very much about meteorites (some might call it protecting
my investment) and stopping the occasional idiots that continually try to ruin
things. I have nothing to prove to anybody, including some off-base goofball
like you that likes Big SSTTEEVEY. But since you posted, I get to post my
opinion AGAIN. I am equally and simply tired of the do-gooders like you that
occasionally come out of your pup-tents to support our infamous SSTTEEVEY.
And, PS, I tried all the do-gooder things like writing him directly, hitting
the
delete key, et al. Check the list archives again to find out why that doesn't
work. You can answer your own question.

PS, when you talk to your SSTEVEY buddy next, tell him to post much less
frequently and keep it meteorite related.

All the best!

List, can anyone tell me why the number of hot dog buns in a package don't
match the number of hot dogs when I buy them? You have to buy several packages
to make them all match up, and I can't eat that many hot dogs. I was

HI BIG SSTTEEVVEEYYY AKA RICHARD (DICK) ARNOLD:

And greetings list. NAYSAYER # 1 here. A couple of key points for the
handful of live and let live Stormbringer supporters before I pick apart
NITWIT

Martin,Marcin, and many, many others), and not surprisingly, we have a handful
of people that support him and his spamming activities, his less than honest
representations of meteorites sales, his posting of inane details of his
hideous

list that they whine about is not brought on by people like me and MANY others
that don't like SSTTEEVVEY. It is brought to the list by the KING OF DENIAL,
SSTTEEVVEY DDIICKEY AARRNNOLD. Remember, if the LIST CLOWN does not post,
neither do I and many others. And, if he has the right to spam the list, post
details about his ridiculous life, continually ask stupid questions, practice
misrepresentative selling (do recall that Dopey is one of 2 or 3 people to ever
get booted from the IMCA...ya think there might be something to it???), THEN I
(and others) HAVE THE RIGHT AS LIST MEMBERS TO TRY AND STOP THE DEGRADATION
OF THE LIST BY CALLING SSTTEVEEY WHAT HE REALLY IS, AND THAT IS A LIST
CANCER. And, if the SSTEEVEEY supporters (all 4 of them) don't like it, try
writing SSTTEEVVEY and telling him to stop posting all his crap. Then it will
get
very quiet. If he doesn't stop, and you still don't like it, TOO BAD. You and
SSTTEEVY go start your own list. Until then, I will post whenever I like.
And PS, if people don't think this has anything to do with meteorites, think
again. This is the one meteorite forum in the world that aggregates the
greatest minds in many scientific disciplines, and I and many others are here
for the
amazing information. AND THEN WE HAVE BIG SSTTEEVVEEY. Believe me, I would

Re: [meteorite-list] No More Anti-Steve Posting Please

2005-05-27 Thread Gtceb
Mark:
Deleting Steevvee's posts is not the answer. We can nitpick about the
definition of spam (which is like picking the flysh*t out of the pepper), but
if
SSTTEEVVe was sending the list MULTIPLE UNWANTED pictures or links of himself
and
a friendly Chihuahua, or offers to sell you pics of him and his friendly
Chihuahua and a meteorite (to make it meteorite related), though you belonged
to
the list, would it not be considered offensive and not appropriate (spam) by
most list members? The answer is yes from where I sit. Take a good hard look
at Bill's post below. When SSTTEEVE rips people off (or politely misrepresents
himself for the live and let live crowd), this goes way beyond an odd for
sale post. He is a detriment to the meteorite community (imagine a newbie
buying one of his 3 for 1 sale meteorites only to find out that he got
screwed).
Then the person tries to write SSTTEVE, but does not get an answer. Buyer
beware? No. That person does not buy again. Acceptance of Steve's bad habits
(hit the delete key, et al.) are an endorsement of his behavior to his feeble
brain. He has no reason to stop because a few people say good job
SSTTEEVEY. The list is not SSTTEEVY's personal sales blog (I assume you agree
with
that), or information seeking blog, or lonely married person blog, or person
with
no friends blog, or here is my trip to Mexico blog, etc. to torture list
members whenever he sees fit.
My opinion. Nothing personal to you.

StarMeteorites

I was just going to let this go, but seeing some folks not understanding how
this fellow operates I have decided to tell a short story about my first
dealings with Steve A. from Chicago (Elgin) IL.

I was actually taken in by a request for some Franconia irons a few weeks
back which I hunt for and find myself here in Arizona, by Steve. Now I hunt
these and take pride in my finds and picked out some very nice little irons
and also a slice of about 1.5 grams or so of the H5 chondrite thought to be
the source of the small and very unique irons and sent them to Steve as a
gift thinking he would add them to his collection.

A few days later they show up for sale on ebay...Didn't sell there so he put
them in his sale...Needless to say I felt sort of stupid and taken for the
proverbial ride. This was my first and LAST experience with Mr. Arnold. I
emailed him asking about it and got no reply.

Yes it is true that they are his do with as he pleases, but I feel I should
have been told before sending them to him that he intended to sell them and
not keep them. His pretence was owning some for his collection in his
request. Alas I am fond of learning some things the hard way, but just once
:)

Whoops...Bill

People like Matteo and our favorite buffoon from Elgin Illinois continue to

continues
to deteriorate. God forbid if you actually take a stand and say enough is
enough. All of the live and let live nellies come out of the woodwork. Who
cares if our favorite idiots rip people off, damage relationships, impact
dealer

level? Just hit the delete key is my favorite live and let live battle cry.
Well, while all that power deleting is going on, many good people will not
speak up or will leave the list altogether. Many have already done so. The
list
will be left with the Matteo's and Big Steve's of the world, and a pack of
live and let live's. What a community that will be! I assure you that the many
good people that play by the rules will not wait around for it to happen.

Re: [meteorite-list] WHY, WHY, WHY does this posting bother everyone so much???

2005-05-01 Thread Gtceb
Steve:
Your continued befuddlement is part of the answer. You just do not get it.
Rather than rehash (it is hard not too, since so many people have told you
time and again to knock it off) what everyone else has said, I will itemize
just
some of your issues briefly for you to ponder:
1. Your posts are frequent and irritating to those seeking information beyond
big steve's latest chondrule aquisition or where you went yesterday, today,
tomorrow, or your latest please like me give away, or your latest SAU
giveaway, etc. Most people simply do not care. I like Martin's suggestion..go

2. Your I am harmless arguement mostly falls on deaf ears. Even with the

subjected to your selfish, tedious, ignorant, and boring harangues. I believe
your
behavior gives the meteorite community a bad name.
3. You continually exhibit the same behaviors you have apologized for in the
past. It is obvious that the word learn is not in your vocabulary. You
have not learned a thing, despite the efforts of many to educate you.
You have been called out and asked to stop by many of the most respected
names in the community, and you habitually ignore them and others trying to
help
you learn how to behave.
4. The few defenders of your behavior argue that you are really a nice
guy and while you post a lot, we should just use the delete key and continue
to put up with all your junk. A person that has exhibited the type of
behaviors (we need not go into the reasons that the IMCA used the delete key)
that you
have does not belong on the list. Just like Matteo. My opinion.

I would bet if we took a vote of all list members as to whether you should
remain on the list or not, I bet the count would be something like 95% go and
5%
stay. Think about it.

[meteorite-list] Repatriating Chinese fossils from Australia

2004-07-01 Thread Gtceb

Greetings list:
I have been on the list for few years, mostly reading, with an occasional post. I have read with interest the discussion of meteorite "ownership" (and the recent Libyan Glass discussions) and all of the scenarios that go with it. I had always discounted a country taking the time and spending money to pursue it's meteorites (or fossils) across the globe for purposes of repatriating them. Until today.A very good friend in Ireland shared this e-mail from a mutualfossilfriend in Australia that I know (a very good guy dedicated to kids and opening a museum in his town...not a dealer..). I could not believe what I was reading. The e-mail was written yesterday to my friend in Ireland by my friend in Australia, was a "catching up with each other" e-mail,and is authentic (I know the guy well). I only cut out the relevant paragraph. I think this isworth considering from a meteoritic point of view. Interested to hear what others think about this:

"I have been visited by Australian Federal Police Agents that appeared on my doorstep getting me out of bed early in the morning with a search warrant. They proceeded to search my house for all chinese fossils telling me i am in trouble for bringing into the country. Well they took eleven egg clusters...everything i hadkeichosaurs, fish. i have been numb ever since. With council making life difficult and expensive with all their red tape, i tell you my friend i am so close to being finished with fossils and my dream of a museum.. They have bought so much grief already now to be treated like a real major criminal defies description. One would think fossils as a hobby is safe... well far from it! They took my old computer that has all business dealings over the past 5 years on it boy does that upset me! To lose all my precious eggs i worked so hard to get is one of the lowest feelings i have ever known. To think i now have to get expensive legal representation to defend myself is more than aggravating. I bought them in via the U.S. starting 5 years ago... there was no restriction on bringing them into the country... now they have decided its illegal they are seizing goods bought back anytime after 1987 ~ Its real Gestapo stuff... one can do nothing but watch while they take what they like one can relate to the feeling of being raped. So i will be vigorously defending myself in Court and trying with all my means to retrieve my eggs. Its hard to imagine the Irish government would be so harsh. Our government is seriously tainted with a real reputation for treating its citizens with contempt. Seems the Chinese government has asked the Australian government to return all fossils of theirs in the country ... so our federal police oblige by raiding peoples homes... outrageous! Imagine the Chinese goverment responding to an Australian request with such vigour !!! Never."

[meteorite-list] Meteorite cocktail..mix and shake well....

2004-03-02 Thread Gtceb

Greetings list:
I think if you take great passion for meteorites, throw in large amounts of money, mix in a large dose of pride and ego,add the complexities and stresses of finding/aquiring the stones, blend in varying degrees of stone rarity and the sciences involved, and finally top off with wildly different personalities, you have a potentially volatile cocktail that when mixed and shaken thoroughly, sometimes explodes.
As the former head of a few large companies, I always wanted people on my team that were committed, intelligent, driven, and honestwith a passion for what they do. And, when you put those type of people together in a high stress business environment, the wildcard is personalities of the individuals and each person's ability tocontrol and manage their interactions. Sometimes it worked well, and sometimes it did not. But, there was always diagreement, and it was healthy for the business.I think disagreements are healthy if "properly handled" in all business and scientific environments, and it certainly is healthy here.
My opinion on the list disagreements:since we have only a few forums where the meteorite community comes together, disagreements will occur and somewill be on list. If this were an association where members met quarterly, these disagreements would come out at the meetings if they were not handled one on one in advance. Since we are all electronic, this list is the clearing house. The rules of engagement should be to work it out privately first. However, ifsomeone takes their complaint to the list to get other opinions or simply vent (which can be a good and sometimes productive release of energy), the person that has been targeted by the post certainly has a right to respond to the post on-list.I think thatas adults we all know the boundaries and when the line has been crossed (swearing, blatant personal attacks, etc).Setting the record straight is educational, in some form, for all.
For those looking for a perfect world where we all ge along, it is not going to happen. Accept that the aforementioned complexities will always exist.Understand thatunless you have a purescience forum where meteorite selling conversations are forbidden, and a meteorite selling forum where science discussions are forbidden, you are going to have disagreements for the history of this list.Personally, I learn a great deal from the disagreements. As someone on the list said recently, I learn who to buy from, who is petty, who is childish, whois smart, who is not so smart, who to trust, not trust, etc. Accept it, and make liberal use of the delete key if any of the posts bother you. If you don't accept the fact that this list will at times air disagreements, you will live in constant frustration. Trying to regulatea complex group like we have around the world and expecting that we will all get along is asking too much. Asking people to be civil when they have disagreements is not asking too much. Just a fewthoughts

[meteorite-list] Suizhou TKW question

2004-02-19 Thread Gtceb

Greetings list:
I recently purchased a 1502 gram beautiful half individual Suizhou and ordered the corresponding label from Meteoritelabels.com. When the label came in, I noticed that the TKW on the label was 260 kilos. I then checked Meteorites A-Z, which listed a TKW of 70+ kilos. The well known dealer that I purchased the stone from also had a TKW of 70 kilo's on his label. I then dropped Roman a note asking him where he got his 260 kilo TKW from. He sent the attached description from the Met Base that I have copied below. It is confusing in that it lists both 260 kilo's, then 70 kilo's, and then 260 kilo's. I surmise that the original fall find was 70 kilo's, and that it was adjusted upward at a later time after more was found. Does anyone on the list have an answer for this TKW question? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yet people continue to defend him. Do the defenders of Matteo believe he has a right to post at all costs? [meteorite-list] Ebay misspellings

In Online Auctions, Misspelling in Ads Often Spells Cash

By DIANA JEAN SCHEMO, The New York Times
knifes, Art Deko vases, camras, comferters and saphires.
They do get bidders, but rarely very many. Often the buyers are those who troll for spelling slip-ups, buying items on the cheap and selling them all over again on eBay, but with the right spelling and for the right price. John H. Green, a jeweler in Central Florida, is one of them.
Mr. Green once bought a box of gers for $2. They were gears for pocket watches, which he cleaned up and put back on the auction block with the right spelling. They sold for $200. "I've bought and sold stuff on eBay and Yahoo that I bought for next to nothing" because of poor spelling or vague descriptions, he said.
David Scroggins, who lives in Milwaukee, also searches for misspellings. His company provides entertainment for weddings and corporate events, and microphone systems for shows at Wisconsin's casinos. He has bought Hubbell electrical cords for a 10th of their usual cost by searching for Hubell and Hubbel. And he now operates his entire business by laptop computers, having bought three Compaqs for a pittance simply by asking for Compacts instead.
No one knows how much misspelling is out there in eBay land, where more than $23 billion worth of goods was sold last year. The company does flag common misspellings, but wrong spellings can also turn up similar misspellings, so that buyers and sellers frequently read past the Web site's slightly bashful line asking, by any chance, "Did you mean . . . chandelier?"
One unofficial survey an hour's search for creative spellings turned up dozens of items, including bycicles, telefones, dimonds, mother of perl, cuttlery, bedroom suits and loads of antiks.
Contacted, the sellers were often surprised to hear that they had misspelled their wares.
Ms. Marshall, who lives in Dallas, said she knew she was on shaky ground when she set out to spell chandelier. But instead of flipping through a dictionary, she did an Internet search for chandaleer and came up with 85 or so listings.
She never guessed, she said, that results like that meant she was groping in the spelling wilderness. Chandelier, spelled right, turns up 715,000 times.
Some experts say there is no evidence that people are spelling worse than they ever did. But with the growth of e-mail correspondence and instant messaging, language has grown more informal. And much as calculators did for arithmetic, spell checkers have made good spelling seem to quite a number of people like an obsolete virtue.
Not that spell checkers are used by nearly everyone. Indeed, experts say the Internet with its discussion boards, blogs and self-published articles is a treasure trove of bad spelling.
"Before the Internet came along, poor spelling by the public was by and large not exposed," said Paige P. Kimble, the director of the National Spelling Bee. Now, though, "we are becoming acutely aware of what a challenge spelling is for us."
Sandra Wilde, author of the 1992 book "You Kan Red This!: Spelling and Punctuation for Whole Language Classrooms K-6," said language served a variety of purposes, so that in some settings it might make sense to skip punctuation or to speak in slang. She likens instant messaging, for example, to notes passed at the back of the classroom when the teacher's back is turned: there is no premium on proper spelling.
"On something like eBay though," she said, "it matters.'
Henry Gomez, vice president for corporate communications at eBay, said the company did not generally hear from sellers who misspell, and had no way of gauging how many sales might have involved misspelled listings.
But some sellers clearly bear in mind the potential for disaster when preparing their advertisements. Warren Lieu of Houston, who was selling hunting and fishing knives on eBay recently, covered all the bases: his listing advertised every sort of alphabetic butchery, including knifes and knive.
Mr. Lieu, a computer programmer, keeps a list of common misspellings, including labtop for laptop and Cusinart for Cuisinart.
His strategy of listing multiple spellings, he said, is based on his experience as a buyer. "I'm a bad speller myself," he said. So his mistakes in searching for items led him to realize that he could buy up bargains.
"I'd go ahead and deliberately misspell it when I searched for items," he said.
Jim Griffith, whose official title at eBay is dean of eBay education, teaches 40 to 50 seminars a year around the country. Although the auction house flags common misspellings online, Mr. Griffith said, the most common question he gets is, "When will eBay get a spell checker?" His answer? "You go to a store called a bookstore, and you buy something

Meteorite Hits Northern Iran

TEHRAN (Jan. 2) - A meteorite hit northern Iran on Friday causing minor damage to property but there were no immediate reports of casualties, state radio said.
It said the impact sent locals in panic onto the streets in the northern town of Babol in Mazandaran province.
"A meteorite which hit Babol on Friday morning caused only some minor damage to residential units," radio said, without giving further details or citing any source.
It said the impact was felt up to one kilometer away.
Iranians are currently mourning at least 30,000 people killed by an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale which struck southeastern Iran on December 26.

Re: [meteorite-list] OT dinosaur fossil needed

2003-11-28 Thread Gtceb

Tom:
You can get some decent authentic spinosaurus (Jurassic Park III) teeth on Ebay rather inexpensively (some times even as low as $5-$10 a tooth). Regarding the claws, forget it. Authentic claws are rarer (less of them per dino vs teeth, andthen even fewer claws are found preserved vs teeth which preserve better because of the enamel...) If you can get them focused on fossil shark teeth, you can get some imperfectcarcarocles megaldon (extinct great white ancestor that grew tobe as big as a Grey Hound bus) that are from the Miocene, generally 1-10 million years old. These teeth run from an 1 inch to 7 inches long, figure about 10 feet of shark per inch. Hope this helps, Terry

Was watching my son finish football practice tonight and witnessed a fall that looked nearly identical to the Peekskill video. Flash then multiple large (tough to define large) fireballs (6-9). I was in Lake Bluff, Illinois looking West, it was traveling south to north, fireballs extinguished just before the northern tree line from where I was facing. Several people witnessed it alongside me. It was truly breathtaking! My guess, given that lake Michigan was behind me, is that it fell somewhere in Wisconsin north to Canada. [meteorite-list] response to New Blood (hope this works this time)

2003-08-14 Thread Gtceb
Greetings. This is my first post, and I wanted to chime in and say that I am not sure
there is anything more important than what you all are doing right now with children!
For the last 7 years, I have been going to schools that my children attend (and
others) to teach different classes about meteorites and fossils. For the last 5
years, I have left substantial portions of my meteorite and fossil collections at many
schools for the teachers to use. I also volunteer at other schools and camps in the
area doing meteorite and fossil shows.

My last show for 15 ten year olds at a conservation camp two weeks ago was
outstanding. I brought in many pieces of my collection, including a 26 kilo Sikhote
Alin, a 35 kilo NWA, a 1.92 gram piece NWA 1195 Martian, Allende, Park Forest (I live
in Illinois) and many others. You should have seen their faces when I let them each
hold a real piece of Mars! I think the counselors were even more amazed. They were
adults acting like kids! I talked about the process of Lunar and Martian meteorites
making it to earth, the Amino acids in Murchison, Star Dust in Allende, a large
meteorite possibly ending the reign of the dinosaur, etc! All of the kids are
sitting in amazement (as were the adults!). I also showed the kids what a meteorite
stick was and bit about how to hunt for meteorites. The next day, the camp went
hiking and all day the kids were looking for meteorites with magnets and a few
meteorite sticks that I let them borrow. 5 parents separately commented that it was
all their kid talked about all night, that they were going out to buy magnets, and two
told me I had created a meteorite monster! At the end of the show, I gave each child
and each counselor a small (10-15 gram) Sikhote Alin with a label from
MeteoriteLabels.com. The investment to me was more than worth it! They were all
thrilled and amazed. They each went home with an amazing rock from space; something
they will remember (hopefully!) for a very long time.

I think some of the adults at my shows view my interest in meteorites as a bit
eccentric. I get very animated and passionate when I talk. But I have never seen a
kid react with anything but sheer joy, genuine amazement, and complete intrigue at the
possibilities surrounding meteorites. I have seen the spark many times in
children, and if I have been able to further their imagination through my shows, that
is a great gift to me. P.S., If some of you have some spare time (which I do as I
have been fortunate to retire very early), it is not only children that love this.
Take and hour of your day and do a show at a retirement home with the elderly. Watch
them turn into little kids :-) All the best to the list. I find your collective
information of great help to me, as it educates me and helps me get the proper
information to the people who are just learning of this great hobby!

Re: [meteorite-list] NEW BLOOD

All of the kids are sitting
