[meteorite-list] new martian meteorite DaG 1037
Hi all, I recently got a sample of the new DaG 1037 As you all may know, yesterday's announcement of the MetBull 88 brought up this new mars. Great thing ! It has features which you don't have in other Dag 476 etc. meteorites It is a spectacular Martian Meteorite with glassy - almost translucent appearance! This is the center piece - the missing link - of the DaG Shergottites! - It seems to origin from the exact zone where the asteroid has hit the surface of the Red Planet! Erich sells it at www.mars.li ! He states that prices will increase although it is a big meteorite. Who knows Erich knows he means (serious) what he says. best regards from Austria, Christian PS: Neuschwanstein main mass finding report was made on April 1st ;-) IMCA #2673 www.austromet.com Ing. [meteorite-list] Neuschwanstein main mass found
Hi all, a mediate rusted specimen with a weight of 5,460.10 grams was found in March 2003 after snow melting period on Austrian territory in the alpine mountains. Scientists are now discussing the name of the meteorite. Like the difference between "plutinos" and planets here it is the same. Difference between "Austrian" or "German" meteorite. This is reasonable as the recently found (present) main mass of 5460 grams was found on Austrian territory. You will read more on this topic in the next few days. All and no one in particular, I have been in touch with Bernd and was very sad to learn that he left the list because of the verbal abuse that continues to fly. People are using the list to attack others and it is disgraceful. I wonder how many other people have dropped out because of this behaviour? How many newbies have been turned off of meteorites after seeing the crap posted? I have been lucky enough to have met Bernd and visited with him in Germany this past summer. Bernd and Pauline openned their home to me and we had a great time discussing meteroties and astronomy and art and so much more. I have also been invited back and plan to visit summer 05. It is because of this list that I got to know Bernd. Now he has left and many people will not get the benefit of insightfull comments, extensive data base, and enthusiasm. I deeply enjoy meteorites and find that the list helps me keep in touch with other enthusiasts and in touch with what is going on in the field. Unfortunately, not as much as it used to. If you have something to say to another person then do so privately. If you attack someone opennly then you are simply trying to use the list to advance your own agenda and to gang up on that person. Many have argued that "they started it" and since they were opennly attacked then they should ahve the right to reciprocate. Perhaps that is true but all it does is continue the downward spiral. It is a bigger person who decides to respond in private and not use the list to support their own position. If personal attacks (REGARDLESS OF HOW JUSTIFIED THEY ARE) were sent privately and kept off the list then people like Bernd would still be here. Perhaps this list can return to what it was. A fantastic forum created by Art to advance the science of meteorites and link enthusiasts around the world. Maybe we could even get bernd back. Sorry to have sermonized but I am just fed up. RE: [meteorite-list] Weight VS Size ?
Hi Tom ! Nearly all of the materials have different weigths compared to their volumes. It depends an different factors. A new article in the latest issue (No 8/2003) of "Meteoritics and Planetary Science" has a good abstract to this subject. It is called "Stony meteorite porosities and densities". Datas were taken from 925 samples of 454 different meteorites also from different classes like Achondrites, carbonaceous chondrites, enstatite chondrites, ordinary chondritesand even stony irons. There you can see the variety of all the materials. This is what I was myself looking a long time for. Maybe Bernd can remember, as I once asked him too about densities of meteorites. I don't know if this really helps you Tom, as you have to be subscribed to the MetSoc to get the magazine. Some of you might know me as a buyer on ebay (metcollector) a pretty active one, lately, I have to say. My name is Bernhard Rems, I am 40 and I live and work in Vienna/Austria. My daytime profession is that of a senior copywriter for BBDO Austria. When I am not writing and directing ads, I am interested in astronomy (I am an active amateur astronomer, computer roleplaying games (I run one of the largest websites for this genre) and of course meteorites. You could call me something like a junk collector: I am mainly interested in the so called desert rubbish, NWAs, ordinary chondrites and numbered, not named meteorites. Dont ask me why I find them at least as appealing as those witnessed falls and rare specimens (yes, I have some of them, too). I have been reading this list online for some time now, and I found it informative (and amusing, sometimes). To put it clear: I am not a seasoned collector. I never have hunted meteorites myself. The air was all the while calm, and the sky nearly cloudless. On he 3d of June last, the same clear weather prevailed. At a quarter past eight in the evening of this day there was seen, from several remote places, (at London, for example, and at Angers, sixteen leagues from each other,) a globe of bright light in a southern direction from Angers, lasting for several seconds, and dispersing in luminous waves. This light was followed by a very loud detonation, susceeded by a number of sharp reports, like the vollies of masquerty, lasting for five or six seconds, which attracted the attention of many persons, who had not happened to observe the luminous appearance. This was folled by a fall of stones, proceeding from the same direction, one of which, weighing thirty ounces, fell in a garden of the Faubourg Gaven, at Angers, seven feet distant from a women watering the plants. We have every reason to believe that many other similar stones must have fallen at the same time around Angers, but no certain factof the kind has, as yet, come to my knowledge. The above mentioned stone is an irregular angular fragment, showing that it must have been a splinter of a large mass. It is covered with a blackish brown crust, of a uniform thickness, which must be attibuted to the action of fire; as there is a bubble on one part of the surface, as if in this spot a greater intensity of heat had began to melt it. The inner part of this aerolite has the same appearance and the texture as that which fell at L'Aigle several years ago, a fragment of which is preserved in the Museum of Natural History at Angers. When the meteor was first observed, many persons affirm that they saw the stone, which has been preserved, falling down in an oblique direction, like a ball from a poece of ordnance. As this fragment happened to fall on a hard garden walk, it only made an indentation half and inch deel, attended with the dispersiion of the earth around it, so as to alarm, grievously, the person near whom it fell. Though it was picked up almost immediately after its fall, it was not sensibly warmer than the atmosphere. -- Annales de Chimie el de Paysique. Angers Meteorite. [meteorite-list] Moravka Fireball Video
Hi Lars ! I found myself this individual where this slice was cut off. I gave all my finding data to the scientists of the Czech Republic. My specimen was under analysis for radioactive isotopes of Al26 and Na 22 at the Universtity of Köln in Germany. I tried very often and many different ways to get this fireball video. From the Czech scientists I got follwing answer: > It was somewhat difficult > to obtain this video and we finally paid a low price only under the > condition that the record will be used only for scientific analysis > and not spread further. [meteorite-list] RE: Flooding in Europe
Hi members ! Thanks for keeping us in your mind. (I am well, my house is on a hill - thanks God) In eastern Austria the waters are going back slowly now. Unbelieveable damage and thousands of people's homes are completely ruined. It's a tragedy here. But there is coming a big flood desaster in Germany now. You can't imagine what happens to Dresden and many other cities in Germany now. Even the Czech Republic and Slovakia have the same desasters. I am very tired of helping 4 days long. Everybody is helping everywhere. In a couple of days we have to clean up all that mud and mess. I think months of hard work lie before us. Christian IMCA #2673 www.austromet.com Ing. [meteorite-list] Last fall of millenium - update
Hi list ! A few days ago we had a discussion about the latest millenium fall. I reported Moravka. But it is not anymore. In the new MetBull 86 - announcement is a later fall in 2000 reported : Yafa 13°42'40" N, 45°10'12" E Yafa province, Yemen Fall 2000, July 15, 14:45 hrs GMT Ordinary chondrite (H5) A main mass of approximately 5 kg and a second mass of approximately 700 g are known. Many witnesses reported a fireball over a wide area from Ma'raban to Aden (some 95 km to the SSW) to Ad Dhala (70 km WSW of Ma'raban) and many in the region reported associated sound effects. The larger stone was collected on the day of the fall, probably within 2-3 hours of the event. The smaller stone was collected the following day. Classification and analysis (G. C. Wilson, UToron): Macroscopically, the fall is a breccia, with well-developed fusion crust and a pale interior. Olivine Fa19.4, orthopyroxene En81.3Fs17.3Wo1.4, kamacite 0.56 wt% Co and 6.78 wt% Ni. Tetrataenite, averaging 50.3 wt% Ni, is an accessory mineral. Shock stage S2, negligible degree of weathering, consistent with recent fall. Specimens: type specimen 600 g Yemen; 93 g and polished thin section, GSC; main mass believed to reside with the finders (as of 2001 September 28). ********** Ing. [meteorite-list] Re: KOFELSITE
I got some other Info on the Koefels Structure : MORE IMPACT AND IMPACT-LIKE STRUCTURES ON SIR-C RADAR; EUROPE, AFRICA, AND ARABIAN PENINSULA. J.F. McHone1 and R. Greeley2, Dept.of Geology, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ 85287-1404. . [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] In April and again in October of 1994, the Spaceborne Radar Laboratory (SRL) was carried aloft on two separate missions aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour. The objective of these flights was to obtain high resolution multiwavelength and multipolarized (SIR-C & X-SAR) radar images of a wide variety of preselected ground targets including several known impact structures. Impact scars are a fundamental interplanetary landform and the characterization of terrestrial craterforms using remote sensors is pertinent to the study of all coherent bodies in space. Both missions were sucessful and preliminary descriptions of numerous crater images derived from radar data have been reported [1,2]. As analysis of the growing inventory of processed images continues, several additional sites of interest have been detected. These newly identified images are of either previously known or suspected impact features, or they are of landforms which have radar signatures resembling impact structures. This report suppliments previous findings with descriptions of images over Europe, Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula. Koefels, Austria 47° 07'N; 010° 55'E 4 km dia. Oetztal valley in the Austrian Alps was originally selected as a SIRC/X-SAR "Supersite" in order to obtain repeated spaceborne radar coverage of alpine glaciers and their relation to global climate changes. The Koefels structure lies within this study area and is widely regarded as a probable impactgenerated feature [3]. It consists of a 4 km wide slump scar cut into the western wall of the Oetz River valley and a corresponding mass of fractured coherent rock and debris which partially dams the valley floor. Shock metamorphic features reported in components of this rock mass [4] have strenghtened the concept that the Koefels landslide event was triggered by meteoritic impact. On a radar scene generated during SRL-1, Data Take 78.00, Koefels is clearly imaged. Sides and upper ridge line of the slump scar are sharply defined by radar shadows and by slope effects along the valley wall. The terraced valley floor in the vicinity of the slump block is widened with thick, smooth-surfaced sediments which appear radar-dark compared to the radar-bright mass of fallen debris. Lunar and Planetary Science XXVIII 1149.PDF I attached the SRL1-Image with this email, but it was bigger than allowed. You can see it now on http://austromet.com/Koefels_SRL-1_Data_Take_78_00.jpg Greetings from Austria, Christian ********** Ing. Hi list ! I just wanted to write a quick recommendation for Geoff Cintron, Island Meteorite (http://www.islandmeteorite.com). I purchased a piece of the extraordinary NWA 176 meteorite from Mr. Cintron. Unfortunately it was lost on it's way to me. There was no chance to track the package. I waited a a whole while (2 months) before I decided to inform Mr. Cintron about this circumstance, because sometimes packages to Austria take longer time, because they are often missent to Australia. He offered me a replacement piece for free. He picked up the cost of the lost specimen. I only had to cover the new shipping costs. In the meantime I got my replacement piece. It's a wonderful piece. Thanks once again Geoff, for your greatness and generosity. I am very sad about that IMCA has died. Congratulations to all who destroyed this - an example how to ruin a great idea. Bravo ! I am not able to understand this. I think there are many people disappointed now. And maybe there will stay a deep cut in list's members. Maybe a split in two lobbies. Some people believed in this idea and invested very much time and energy. Now they are frustrated. And tomorrow is Christmas. No more to say.
