[meteorite-list] Meteor and the ISS

2014-12-27 Thread JPBrockets--- via Meteorite-list
Hello List -

I just got in from watching a nice 6 minute transit of the International
Space Station. As the transit was ending I got a bonus and saw a meteor
descend behind the eastern horizon. Definitely a first for me to see both a
meteor and the ISS at the same time.

Any other list members happen to have been as lucky in the past?

Juris

[meteorite-list] Australia and Meteorites

2013-11-02 Thread JPBrockets
Hello List Memebers:

I am interested in hearing about any meteorite hunting adventures in the
Land Down Under. I know there are laws governing the export of Australian
meteorites - but surely there has to be at least a couple of local meteorite
list folks to hear from about their finds.

Thanks

Hello List:

Are there reports of any of the stones actually hitting man made
structures? Also, is the shockwave damage to buildings sufficient to classify

Greetings List:

Yet again another treat on the way to work. I saw the entire break-up as I
turned out of my subdivision. JUST SPECTACULAR!!

I have now been lucky enough to see two re-entries. The other one was a few
years back just on the eastern horizon (I'm about 40 miles south east of
Denver) - and that one broke up over Kansas City! That just hammered home to
me
how deceptive the distance scale is when watching meteorites that appear to
land just over the next hill...

Dear List Members:

I saw it!! On my way to work, facing west towards the Rocky Mountains. I
witnessed the whole show. I was passing near an airport so at first thought
the spot of light was related to the air traffic. Then the light brightened
and I saw pieces flaring off. Toward the end of its flight the dot of light
just seemed to fade out.. and then it was gone.

Simply spectacular!

By far, the meteorites that Dean has offered, represent the largest portion of
my collection by weight. Common, simply numbered NWA's - they are still
travelers from space and are valued members of my collection. Thanks Dean for
making them available.

And as to the other historic falls / finds. They too grace my collection.
I'd like to thank any and all meteorite hunters who make such items available.

Hello Tom and List Members -

I think you will find all these meteorites in the Martian colletions. :)

Juris Breikss
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hey List, Nininger said there should be ten meteorites on every square mile
of earth. The rate, I would think would be higher on mars, with a less dense
atmosphere. Without the weathering and such, I would think the meteorites
would stay in one place and survive a lot longer, so I would think the
rovers should be able to find them all over the place. But, what do I know?
: )

Hello Mike and List Members:

I have seen my fair share of meteors - and can only once remember one deviating from a straight path. It had the SLIGHTEST of ziggs to one side about half way through its flight. This meteor was one of two that were a couple of seconds apart, in parallel paths almost right on top of each other. These are also the only two meteors I have ever heard - with a distinct "woosh" after they passed. They left a trail that lingered about for 30 seconds or so.

Now in all fairness, this event happened 30 or so years ago I do have one witness. My sister was there with me and remembers the two meteors. Further details however are lacking in her memory.

Hello Everyone,

I sent the following email twice, but it did not go through. My apologies if anyone receives multiple copies.

Well, I think my days making meteorite micromounts are numbered. Try as I might, I can't get the large blocks of time necessary to cut and finish material. I enjoy making micromounts but I really don't see myself devoting
any time to this engrossing activity before next year so I have decided to let go of much of my material. I obtained some of this material as far back as July and have been just sitting on it - and I have property taxes due in
about a month and need the money!

Sorry for the large image files (800 x 600) but I wanted to give you as much detail as possible.

Here is a link to my special sales page.

I will update this list soon as a piece is sold or reserved, starting 4: pm Eastern.

Thanks!

Re: [meteorite-list] Dealer Refunds

2003-06-29 Thread JPBrockets
Dear List:

Way back in the 80s I bought a couple of meteorites from Robert Hagg. As a teenager I was just thrilled to be able to obtain a rock from space - regardless of price. Now in hindsight I should have spent all my summer earnings on those "early" offerings!!

I got back into the meteorite acquisition scene in late 1999. Yep - mostly from Ebay. I remember bidding on a Campo - just under a kilo. I beat out 10 other bidders, so I know there was demand for it. I was thrilled and thought I had gotten a great deal. Today - I have chunk of iron that is much smaller then it was, having rusted significantly! The price of Campo is way down from what I paid in 1999. NEVER did I think of contacting the dealer and asking for a refund. The item was just as represented, and I learned a lot about irons from this piece.

So my two grams worth is simply: things change. The price of ANYTHING will fluctuate over time. As a buyer, you need to decide when you can afford the item - and what the real value is to you. If the price is too much - move on. Once you buy - keep your integrity, complete the payment - and again, move on.

Thanks for the invite and getting the hunt put together. Although I came home empty handed, I'm glad I made the 900 mile trip from Colorado - and had a great time.

On the way home I took at look at Holbrook. The ground was still a bit soggy in places, but there too - no luck. At least I have found that one from an earlier hunt! ;)

have found - so I vote it as the one I am most Thankful for. It gives me the

March 26, 2002. MY FIRST METEORITE FIND!

Dave Andrews, our Holbrook resident expert, took the day and showed me around the Holbrook strew field. Thanks Dave!

I found a whole individual - a link to a picture is attached (the marks are in millimeters). OK, so the size is nothing to brag about, but it sure was a thrill to find it! The other piece is a fragment, and not much bigger then the first piece.
