Thank you for clarifying that. I would have
seen it as a completely different situation had the meteorite been taken from
lands that were owned by the tribe, even if they never used it in any way shape
or form.

They
didnt worship the Willamette, nor did they use it forceremonies, nor did
they assert a claim to it until after the MNH in NY decided to make it a
centerpiece of the new Rose wing. It was a shakedown, plain and simple.
There is a
political dimension as well--some legal scholars believe that the Indian
tribes have to assert ownership of everyobject on their lands or they risk
losing the special federal protectionsthey enjoy, as a result of their
legal "ab origine" (latin for from thebeginning) status. The federal legal
status of the Grande Ronde as a tribewas terminated (the legal term was
"emancipated") in 1953, pursuant to HB108. The tribal status was
terminated because there were no longer anyrecognisable Grande Ronde
people, nor were there any recognisable tribalpractices extant.
In any event,
when the Willamette was dragged from itsresting place to the iron yard in
the early 1900s, nobody said anythingabout its religious nature. The
Willamette was dug up, after having rusted
and having
been either undiscovered or ignored for thousands of years. In
the sevenites, a few activists living in Oregon thought that it would be a
good idea tolegally reconstitute the Grand Ronde, and sought
reestablishment of federal tribal status,(along with money) and demanded a
few hundred thousand acres of private,state and federal land for good
measure.
In 1983 the
Grande Ronde werelegally reestablished as a tribe, given the special
federal status that hadlapsed and were given about 9000 acres. they sold
much of their land and timber rights and
opened a
casino in 1995. I think there are about 100 members of the Grande
Ronde.
The Grande
Ronde are seeking to politicise this meteorite, and to turn that
intomoney, pure and simple. Like the macovich auction, except without any
dough
or time at

I am just curious. Does anyone know why it seems Shergottites are more common than Nakhlites or Chassignites? It just seems that if a new Martian meteorite is found, you can almost bet it will be a Shergottite. Is it just that they had a better chance of surviving the journey from impact on mars to the fall through our atmosphere? Jamie

Nakhlites and Chassignites are more fragile than a Shergottite, but does anyone know if they are any more fragile than a CM or CI type of carbonaceous chondrite in which case there are more of these than Nakhlites or Chassignites. Also, on page 208 of Richard Norton's Rocks From Space (revised and updated), he says there are two Chassignites, one that was found in Antarctica. This must be a mistake right? I know it was also mentioned in the first addition as well on page 209. Jamie

I was at the Chicago Field Museum a few weeks back. I really wanted to take a look at their meteorite collection. I have to say I was left asking "is that it?" Although they had a few interesting ones out for display (Zagami, Lafayette etc), it just seems like there should have been more to it. They had two different sites on the same floor where they displayed them, but for a major museum, I felt disappointed. Has anyone else on the list been there (and I am assuming many have) and if so, what did you think? Jamie
