Fixed price is the only way I list on eBay now. I start auction style listings at my minimum desired price. Prices on good meteorites are rising anyway. There are two sizes .7 mm and 1.4 mm. http://www.catchafallingstar.com/canyondiablo.htm I am limiting this sale to 18 total grams. When 18 grams have been sold or 24 hours has passed, the sale will be over. I have decided once and for all to pull the plug on my meteorite endevors. At almost 58, it is time for me to move on to enjoy mine and my wife's time together with family and friends. I have owned many a rare meteorite in my 13 years. I have really enjoyed my time with some of the nicest people I have ever known. I will always be around if you need to email me or call me for what ever reason. I just will not surround myself with meteorites anymore. I have seen to many good people get divorced because of these things. I know they are an addiction but a beautiful hobby. Unfortunately they cost alot of $$$. And being out of work I just cannot collect the way I used to. I will go by the way of GEOFF CINTRON,MARK BOSTICK,JOHN GWILLIAM and just fade from everyone's mind. It has been a blast.8 tucson show's to my credit. Well over I guess $100 K of buying meteorites over 13 years. Of all the people I have met in this great hobby, BOB HAAG and BOB C. they have been the best to me and I'll miss them the most. But I'll miss everyone to whom I have be-friended. If a meteorite falls in my neck of the woods, I'll be there to help hunt.I will always have a place in my heart for these things from another world. As I get ready to celebrate my 14th wedding anniversary,I am truly blessed to have such a great wife. I want to wish everyone a truly blessed rest of your lives and may the hand of god be on you always. This will be final post. [meteorite-list] BS In The NYT: Black Market Trinkets From Space
I sure agree with Adam, 150% He hit the nail on the head. Jim Strope 421 Fourth Street Glen Dale, WV 26038 http://www.catchafallingstar.com/ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> WOW!, This is very disturbing. I cannot listen to any more of this and say nothing. The New York Times has reduced itself, once again, to a lousy rag by demonstrating a bias towards bad news instead of the truth. It is this ratings over responsibility attitude that is putting us into a bad light. What used to be considered a respectful hobby/avocation a few years ago is going the way of the Treasure Hunter. Treasure hunters were considered the lowest life form on the planet due to all of the bad press in the 70s and 80s. A few got lucky and found valuable items. A few got their 15 minutes worth of fame and ruined it for everybody else by bragging, overvaluing objects they found and making promises that were never kept. A few bad apples broke the law and ruined it for everybody else who were legally searching at the time. The press reported only the bad situations and the next thing you know, half of the searchable property was off limits within a single decade. Amateur treasure hunting is barely recovering from all this decades later. Most treasure hunters have learned to keep quite while others have not learned this valuable lesson. Unfortunately, my predication that the avocations of meteorite hunting/collecting would go the same way as the treasure hunters a few years ago is now approaching reality. It is easy to forget that it used to be considered mutually beneficial for all involved to collaborate, the scientist, the dealer and the collector alike. It seems with all of the new interest, the press ignores this delicate collaboration and only seems to focus on the bad and untrue. I have always said, you make enough noise good or bad, you will attract attention, usually the wrong kind. It is disturbing that meteorite hunting is now considered only treasure hunting when it goes far beyond this. A few are ruining a perfectly respectably avocation by focusing only on the treasure hunting and money aspect of it. Labs are closing down to the public, voluntary associations are tied up with meteor wrongs, public land is being withdrawn from searching and idiots are coming out of the woodwork to get a bite at the golden meteorite apple that was promised on TV. These idiots think meteorites are lying around like Easter Eggs and that breaking the law to get them might be alright too. Some of these idiots have pronounced themselves meteoriticists and are garnering as much press as possible spewing forth B.S. They are making legitimate hunters, collectors and dealers all look bad. Sorry, needed to release some steam. I just hate to see a few ruin it for the many. Don't put words in my mouth, Michael. Jim Strope >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Jim, Gary, Eric and all, No, it is NOT a joke. There is nothing funny about This situation at all. I stated NOTHING in my post Mike has is not born Out in Mike's own public statements. (though Jim informs Me it may have been a different prescription drug he gets Out of Mexico) - hell folks, where have you been? READ THE STINKING ARCHIVES. If you all really cared about Mike's welfare you would Be trying to support him in getting professional help, get on prescribed medication and get stabilized. You are all having knee jerk reactions. Think about it. If Mike were your brother wouldn't you want to see him get proper treatment? Mike is home safe - thank God. While he was in danger I Did everything possible I could to minimize any negative impact On him. The list started yammering about it and I pointed out we Needed to remain silent lest we make matters worse for Mike and Rob. John Blennert gave the talk before the auction and we agreed It should not be telecast, as John went through a very similar situation in Oman a couple of years ago and Omani officials offered him $235,000 to get Mike back on Omani territory (so they could Incarcerate him). John TOLD Mike this upon his return and Mike Acted like John was blaming him for John's incarceration. This is ALSO NOT NEW INFORMATION - but somehow This group seems to think since Mike has been through a hard Time of late we should pretend he doesn't have a problem. Mike isn't going to listen to me because I am strait with him AND NO ONE ELSE seems to be willing to or they somehow just Don't see the self destructive behavior right in front of their face. If you all think everything Mike does does not add up to a Big problem for HIM, or, you just don't get it, or you just don't Think it is your "place" to confront him with his self destructive Behavior -- well, folks, I don't know what to tell you, but I can't Do that to a friend. (Yes, I am sure Mike does not consider me A friend right now - but as far as I am concerned, I am the only One who is really relating to him as a friend). Oh, ya, you can tell yourselves what I have said is not friendly. Well, what I think is not friendly is seeing a brother in trouble and Being unwilling to deal with him about it. I am dumbfounded at people's reactions - do you think that just Because he could have had his hands cut off or been in prison for Years or even put to death that that means we should all pretend He didn't put himself in that position AFTER it was clearly explained To him by John Blennert that Oman was OUT TO GET HIM? - Going to a KINGDOM you HAVE BEEN TOLD is out to get you - Self medicating with serious prescription drugs - Being a business man who regularly bursts into ranting and Raving at potential customers and co-businessmen These are all serious self destructive behaviors. So, Greg, Jim And Eric, if you really give a damn about Mike's welfare Don't just say, "Hooray! You got back safe THIS TIME.", help him get the help he needs. Is this some kind of joke? BTWay, your post would have been easir to read if the punctuation and capitalization was presented properly. Jim Strope 421 Fourth Street Glen Dale, WV 26038 http://www.catchafallingstar.com/ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> To Becky, Kirk, Carl 2, et al. No one (except Melody & Rob's sweetie) is happier than I that Mike and Rob are safe and free. However, those of you who are calling for his return to the List have forgotten that Mike's self medication is highly unreliable And he is given not only to fits of frothing at the mouth blather and Attack, but also to obscenity, etc. NO, while I am very happy to see him safe and free and look Foreword to seeing him at the Tucson Show - where I can walk out Of his room if he is in the throws of negativity, there is NO WAY I would ever want to see him back on this list. I would love for someone - perhaps Jim Strope or the like to Send the list a web site address when Michael is ready to tell his Story and we can all go there and read about it. How quickly people forget (or perhaps you weren't on the list Then?) that Mike was taken off the list more than once, later allowed To return and eventually fell back into mad dog mode rantings and Attacks. By all means, do not take my word for it - go into the list archives And read some of those posts yourself (though Art may have deleted Some of the worst ones for obscenity and possible slander suits). Welcome back Mike! But not to the list, please. READ THE ARCHIVES. Perhaps if Mike were to get psychiatric help and establish a Stability on prescription medication - but don't hold your breath. He has publicly stated many times he goes to Mexico for Haldol And one more than one occasion stated he needed to adjust his Dosage. Mental illness is a serious disease and needs to be treated As such. Mike has many terrific characteristics which I enjoy And admire. He is generally generous, honest and I do not doubt He has a good heart - I pray he gets the help he needs. However, until then, I do not want to read endless hostile, ranting posts. [meteorite-list] re Martian Meteorites
Interesting comments. I assume that the name KING OF ALL ANGRITES was bestowed with no thought of sales "hype" in mind. I don't need to sell any NWA 998. I don't care if I never sell another gram. I suspended sales more of a joke than anything. Private emails to me confirmed that most list members got the joke and did not view it as a conspiracy between Adam and I. I know what is going on behind the scenes with NWA 998 as I have made some of the donations to science. I am happy to sit here with it all day long. It does not take up much room in the safe deposit box and it sure doesn't eat much. Have a nice day all and be sure to stay tuned to my next sales suspension. Next week I may suspend sales of Murchison pending upcoming breaking news. :-) (It's a joke people!!!) Jim Strope 421 Fourth Street Glen Dale, WV 26038 http://www.catchafallingstar.com/ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I think it was simple misunderstanding. All my post was intended to point out is that the NASA announcement was not going to increase prices, but if there was an increase it would likely be due to smart marketing. As for comments directed you (Greg H) as I said in my email sorry if you think they were but they were not. THIS is what I was commenting on... "Jim, I can understand the need to suspend sales of NWA 998 until further notice. I can hear the researchers and paleontologists chanting "Drill Baby, Drill" as they are knocking down your door to get at some of those micro-fossils. Astrobiologists will be scampering for pieces once they figure out how fossil-rich this Nakhlite is. Too bad there are a lot of posers claiming to have found alien life forms to gain press, fame and money. It will cheapen the experience when the real deal is studied more, accepted and announced following proper protocol. As for me, several requests for pieces of NWA 998 have come in. Sorry, I only have a few milligrams left other than the main mass which will not be cut again. Best Regards, Adam" "Listees... Sales of my remaining specimens of NWA 998 have been suspended until further notice. Jim Strope 421 Fourth Street Glen Dale, WV 26038 http://www.catchafallingstar.com/"; Right after these two posts from Adam - one from 6:22 and the other from 19 minutes later... "It must have leaked out that NWA 998 is the most fossil-rich meteorite ever found or perhaps they found some more in other Nahklites. http://skymania.com/wp/2010/04/new-meteorite-clues-to-life-on-mars.html It will be interesting to hear what the big boys have to say. Adam" "Many believe that extraterrestrial proof of life will come this year by way of Martian Nahklite meteorites. http://skymania.com/wp/2010/01/proof-of-martians-will-come-this-year.html Maybe NASA is getting the jump on all of the recent posers who are making similar claims. Jim Strope 421 Fourth Street Glen Dale, WV 26038 http://www.catchafallingstar.com/ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I have to agree, I think sales hype will be the main factor to any increased prices of Martian meteorites until 100% proof is offered... an example of sales hype - Before the NASA announcement was even made, one person stopped selling a certain martian while another immediately offered some for sale. Reminds me of the old time sales tactics used to create a perceived demand, supply shortage and scarcity while a partner offers to supply those who "missed out" from the other persons stock. Just using this an an example of how hype can create an artificial increase in cost with good sales planning from people working together. If that time comes that fossils are found in any meteorite, all will jump up in price and demand I think. Re: [meteorite-list] Could we get back to the science of meteorites, please ?
Finally the voice of reason! The volume of OT subjects on this METEORITE mailing list is the VERY reason I check the archives instead of receiving emails. A meteorite could have crashed through the White House and not generated the volume of emails this OT subject has generated over the last few days. Jim > Hello all, I usually stay away from these protracted discussions and am quite happy to lurk on the list. A lot of good, qualified people discussing a topic I truly enjoy: meteorites. Now, I am not interested in sparring with anyone. I just published an article in the Montreal Gazette debunking UFOs; you could substitute UFOS for anything else in the ever widening field of pseudoscience and my article would remain essentially the same. So anyone eager for my views can readily look the article up. However, my computer has recently been invaded by an avalanche of emails from this list that has *nothing* to do with meteorites or science. The basic problem is that pseudoscience is like a religion; no amount of science will ever convince its proponents. So I usually don't bother; ignorance is bliss, as they say. So those who believe in dowsing, divining rods and whatever other contraption, feel free to search with them. Think you can find meteorites, gold, diamonds, water, Jimmy Hoffa with a stick ? Go for it ! That is your business; I'm just not interested. So, could we get back to the science of meteorites, please ? [meteorite-list] Rocks from Space Picture of the Day - January20, 2010
Matt, Gary and list. This is a project that has been going on since 2008, between Shauna, Mike, Robert, and Myself. It has been a lot of work but we have made some great friends in Canada. We are working on an informational website which will be ready in a couple of days or so. So you will all have more photos and videos to see. I think it will give a real feel on what this project has been like. Of course we will all be in Tucson to give you the detailed scoop in person. Unfortunately that piece in Shauna's video is still in Canada along with other pieces we found. We do have a limited amount of small pieces, with export papers, which will be available in Mike Farmer's room at the Inn Suites Room 184. We will photocopy the paperwork for anyone who buys a piece. It is a long process to abide by Canadian export laws, but it seems to be a fair process for everyone involved... Hunters, Land Owners, and Canada. Seems like amazing discoveries are being made by many teams lately. The Arizona fall has been exciting and I can't wait to see "Meteorite Men" tonight. I am in Tucson right now but I have my DVR set up at home to record it. See you all in Tucson !!! [meteorite-list] Pairing discussion/questions
Well, I don't know if you left any out as that is not really important. However, anybody who thinks they can sit in front of their TV eyeballing meteorites that they just got in the mail from from some remote desert, and make a "best guess" classification will get called out by those of us who donate the proper classification repository and pay for the thin sections required. This is my position on meteorites that I get properly classified. I am sure there are other long time collectors/dealers that, like me, have spent thousands of dollars over the years to "do the right thing" that will agree with this position. This was the meteorite that was promoted earlier last year as a "monzogabbro". Well its not a monzogabbro, but maybe even better, as it is compositionally and visually very similar to the LaP lunar from Antarctica - an unbrecciated mare basalt. Looks actually more like a Shergottite to me. Very interesting texture, very interesting meteorite. RIght now, I have a 4.10g freshly crusted (on one side) part slice of NWA 4734 on auction on ebay with a starting bid of $3499. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330395905287&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT#ht_499wt_1098 The auction ends tomorrow - Tuesday. After that the future of the slice is uncertain. It may be broken down for easier sales. I would hate to have to do that to such a beautiful meteorite. So I would consider to sell to aficionados, this piece as the full piece of 4.10g. But wait, you may say. This is far too much for me to possibly afford. You would be correct if shopping at most popular major meteorite dealers shops, where the price for this material is $1200 - $1800/g, or $4920 - $7380 for the piece. But for the next few days, I will offer to good customers and friends a crazy good deal for this 4.10g NWA 4734 slice. Just make me a serious offer that I won't refuse. Re: [meteorite-list] Ash Creek the most expensive ordinary chondrite?
I have to agree with the points that Sonny made on hunting protocol. I couldn't understand the logic of expecting Jack to release the Benson fall co-ordinates after he had done all the leg work. What if he had discovered a gold nugget "honey hole" on some stream high in the Sierra Mountains? Would he be looked down upon for not telling all the gold hunters where it was? I see no difference. When you are essentially picking money up off the ground it changes everything and rightfully so. [meteorite-list] FW: OT eBay (was AD Time to get back to work)
Hi Dennis.. Not a "rub" against watchers. It really does not matter to me. I was just wondering why someone would bother watching a $20- item listed as a "buy it now". On such a cheap item it seems like a waste of time to me, I would either buy it or move on. Buy hey, that's just me ! I guess I don't completely understand the rub with watching an item on eBay. Does it effect the selling process or prevent any other listing process? I know that many consider buyers "Can selling buyers", but a great number of us are just hobbyists and collectors. During my 10 years of collecting, I have bought from almost everyone on this list by means of ebay or at the auctions in Denver and Tucson. I watch many auctions, just as reminders. My limited budget for my hobby keeps me from shopping off of yous guy'ses websites. Wow, some of you are really proud of your "meteorites for sale". Please don't take this the wrong way, help me to understand how we, the "Can selling hobbyist" should behave. The Collector Only Dennis P.S. Re: [meteorite-list] OT eBay (was AD Time to get back to work)
Oh, thanks a lot Doug. Now I have 6 watchers on this cheap item.! On a side note, because of this listing, I made a $2200- sale off of my website. Having my ebay name (catchafallingstar.com) correspond with my website name has had it's benefits over the years. Ebay does not allow .com names anymore but I was grandfathered in. My 12 year anniversary is coming up next month. There are many complaints about ebay but it would be very difficult to gain the type of exposure anywhere else that ebay provides. My accounting over the years confirms this. [meteorite-list] AD... Time to get back to work
After playing all summer, I find that I must get back to work. So I have started listing on ebay again. All items so far are buy it now listings with some of them accepting reasonable offers. Noteable items are a complete Portales Valley Stone, nice Esquel slices, complete Millbillillie, Gibeon, Planetaries etc, Link is below: http://members.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=catchafallingstar.com I have a question that has puzzled me for some time... On a cheap item, $20- buy it now, why would anyone bother to watch it? It is only $20- and not an auction where you would want to know where it ended or wanted to bid at the last minuite? What is the logic behind cluttering your watched item list with this kind of cheap item? Good luck to all as I have some exceptional items offered and plan on adding more in the next few days. Re: [meteorite-list] AD, New Meteorite Men Collectible on Ebay Closing on Thu...
Hi Steve,,, In your enthusiasm to strike a fatal blow to your arch nemesis in the meteorite world you forgot one important fact. The meteorite coins/tokens/medals (or whatever everyone wants to call them) are truely limited edition. There will only be ONE #420 of the Campo coin or any other medal that has been struck using a reputable company using a mold and die process. This is the main difference from a piece of paper with a number written on it. I am not saying that you would make more than ONE #1 of any of your cases but in theory it could be easily done. Also, there are quite a few of us selling meteorite coins/medals/tokens so when you are taking a shot at these collectables, well you are taking a shot at a lot of us. Just because I fell good about going on vacation for a week, I will give discount on all of my meteorite coins/medals/tokens for the next 24 hours. $20- each for the Campo and NWA 869 Medals and $70- each for the planetary Medals. Payment must be made by 5:00 Eastern Time on Thursday so that I can ship on my way to the airport on Friday. Worldwide shipping costs are included in the discounted price. Unfortunately, I can not take specific # orders on this short of notice. For those of you who like to call them coins go to this link: http://www.meteoritecoins.com For those of you who like to call them medals go to this link: http://www.meteoritemedals.com For those of you who like to call them tokens go to this link: http://www.meteoritetokens.com Jim Strope 421 Fourth Street Glen Dale, WV 26038 http://www.imeteorites.com > From: meteorh...@aol.com > Date: Wed, 15 Jul 2009 13:13:54 -0400 > To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com > Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] AD, New Meteorite Men Collectible on Ebay > Closing on Thu... > > Mike, > > Mint up some token/coins.
