Re: [meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk meteorite
I have to agree with the Count. I've seen metal content within type specimens range wildly. Some even have metal blebs that would lead you to think it's a stoney iron using a magnet test. Jim K In a message dated 3/17/2013 4:19:48 A.M. Central Daylight Time, countde...@earthlink.net writes: Hello Shawn. I think you may be oversimplifying the composition of individuals and frags of the same fall. It would be remarkable to me that each portion of a specimen would have the same percentage of metal. I don't think whatever process creates a meteorite involves the surety of an equal distribution of elements throughtout by volumn. Some areas of the meterorite is gonna have more metal and some ain't. That would acount for a specimen having different lithographies like Almahatta Sitta for ezample. I'm operating on short info here, but I think ya'll get the drift. But,to answer one of your queries, all nine of my little Pultusk looking peas of Chebarkul had the same unscientifically measured attraction to a neo magnet. My question is, with some of the historic meteorites I have, can over time, the strength at which a LL or L or even a H meteorite increase over time, due to oxidation and or rusting? Why I ask is because is because I have two meteorite samples that fell in 1803 and both are from France, but two different falls and are both L6. One sample is is less magnetic than the other. The one that is stronger has about the same attraction and pull to a H7 Forest City meteorite. All three meteorites come from top dealers and collectors, so I know the authenticity is genuine, but it seems some stones can have anomalys within, when tested with magnets. Has any other listers noticed this, and if so, why would this happen? I have also heard that some dealer has devised a full proof test to test stoney meteorites to see if they are LL L or H or HH, or did I just make up HH :) > >Shawn Alan >IMCA 1633 >ebay store >http://www.ebay.com/sch/imca1633ny/m.html >http://meteoritefalls.com/ > > >- Original Message - >From: Graham Ensor >To: Count Deiro >Cc: Peter Scherff ; meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com >Sent: Saturday, March 16, 2013 6:24 PM >Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk meteorite > >Hi Countstrange that yours do not have any of the brown crust or >other surface features common in most from the fall that were picked >up within days. > >Graham > >On Sat, Mar 16, 2013 at 10:01 PM, Count Deiro wrote: >> Peter and List >> >> All nine Chelyabinsk/Chebarkul individuals that I have purchased from three different foreign sources resemble themselves. [meteorite-list] It's from the ashtray belt!
The Oakland Tribune reports the exploding streaks were especially visible Wednesday night over the San Francisco Bay area and other parts of Northern California, with reports of bright fireballs and loud booms from Santa Cruz County to Mendocino County. "Happened to look over, saw like a crescent shaped object, reddish orange in color," Edward Pierce told KGO-TV. "As it went away it started getting larger. Kind of expanding." Jonathan Braidman, an astronomer at Oakland's Chabot Space and Science Center, told the station what Pierce and others saw were small, car-sized pieces of rock and metal from the ashtray belt. It crashed through the earth's atmosphere, "ionizing and setting the air on fire in its wake," he said. National Weather Service forecaster Steve Anderson tells the Tribune that warm temperatures and cloud-free skies are making the bright lights more visible, a phenomenon that should only increase as the weekend approaches and the shower continues. The fireballs are part of the large, fast Orionid meteor shower, so-named because it has the Orion constellation as a backdrop. _http://weather.aol.com/2012/10/18/stunning-meteor-showers-blaze-across-cali fornia-sky/#page=1%3Ficid_ (http://weather.aol.com/2012/10/18/stunning-meteor-showers-blaze-across-california-sky/#page=1?icid) __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] I'm Baaaaack... :)
Hi Gary, I use a product called "Bar Keepers Friend" to freshen up my etched irons. It comes in a powder and liquid form. Get the powder one. You can find it in the cleanser isle of most grocery stores or Walmart. Wet the etched surface with warm water then mix the Bar Keepers Friend into a paste, then gently apply it to your etched surface. I use my finger to rub it gently for about 2 minutes. Then rinse with water, then soak in alcohol, then dry in an oven, then soak in ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid), wipe dry and your good to go. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite?
Hi Doug and List, After doing some research and talking to Randy Korotev I believe that this stone is a glacier deposited Basalt. Can't be 100% certain that the grains are iron. There all less than 1mm in size and hard to see. I have found basalts in the past with iron flakes and olivine so I think it's very possible that the grains are iron. I posted some photo's of a couple of the iron bearing basalts that I found over the years on the Meteorite Junction site. _http://www.meteoritejunction.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&p=2860#p2860_ (http://www.meteoritejunction.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&p=2860#p2860) Cheers, Jim K In a message dated 11/30/2011 3:19:35 P.M. Good point on the hematite. I find it in a lot of concretions that people are always calling meteorites. I believe it was one of these nearly 10 years ago that got me on the list after a miner and his beautiful daughter both insisted to me they had seen them fall, in the middle of some desert devoid of life. Her name wasn't Clementina but the mine was both in a cavern and through a canyon;-) This rock would be a great candiditate to put up on your website of wrongs in my opinion, the interior of the first image is very tricky. I think you are agreeing that it would be difficult to find reduced metal in an otherwise hematite rich matrix for terrestrial rocks. I measure the specific gravity of most of the rocks that people send me. The book values for the SG of hematite and magnetite are in the 5.1-5.3 range. I get a lot of hematite and magnetite rich rocks, and SG's range from 3 to 5. The low ones are usually from rocks with quartz sand cemented by a lot of hematite or, perhaps better, hematite diluted with quartz sand. I also get a lot of rocks that are claimed to contain metal but all I can see are shiny mica flakes and grains of pyrite or arsenopyrite that look like metal but aren't. As I say on this page, a good test is to look at the grains after sawing and see if you can see the saw marks. http://meteorites.wustl.edu/id/ordinary_chondrites.htm If you can't, it's probably not FeNi metal. I'd like to see the sawn face of the stone in those photos up close. Ordinary chondrites break apart from weathering in nature because the metal rusts, causing a volume expansion (like rust blisters under automobile paint) that fractures the rock making it easier for water to get in, etc.. That's the only environment I'd expect to see a lot of hematite together with metal. The rock in the photos doesn't seem fractured. Here is how this will work : I will accept nominations from the List for objects that will be hammered by this meteorite. Once a nomination is selected, I will take the object out into my backyard and place it on the ground. I will set up a camera to capture the resulting mayhem on video. I will then climb onto my roof and hurl the meteorite at the object with the intent of doing some serious damage to the target object. Then I will upload the video to YouTube for hammer voyeurs around the world to watch. Some rules about nominating objects : 1) I am a man of very modest means. This means I cannot, and will not, smash any flat screen plasma televisions, iPads, Ferrari windshields, priceless antiques, or other objects which are expensive or difficult to acquire. The objects nominated should be common items that are easily available and inexpensive. 2) Resist the temptation to nominate politicians (of any party affiliation). 3) I will select a winning nominee based on a combination of - creativity and smashability. 4) If someone wants to donate an object for smashing, I will consider and accept donated objects based on the criteria laid out in #3 above. For example, let's take the "typical" H5 chondrite - one of the most common of all meteorite types. Where does the H5 fall on the Mohs hardness scale? Up until the time I started cutting and polishing meteorites, I assumed that an L5 would be "softer" than an H5. But, I have run across some L-chondrites that are very very hard and require the same amount of sanding/polishing work as some H-chondrites. I am assuming this is because of the individual mineral compositions of the meteorites in questions, and not so much the petrologic type. So am I right to assume that stony meteorite hardness is not dictated solely by iron content? An iron meteorite has a hardness of 4-5 which is what you would get if the test point of the chondrite was on a iron flake. It could be higher if the test point was in the matrix and that would depend on the composition of the matrix. Feldspar which has been found in meteorites has a hardness of 6 and diamond is a 10. Just got a heads up on this new DVD release. Countdown to Impact Product Description For the first time in the history of space exploration, scientists spotted and tracked an asteroid on a collision course with Earth. About the size of a truck, the asteroid slammed into the Nubian Desert in Sudan, in nearly the exact spot and only a few seconds from the time scientists had predicted. Now, together with NASA scientists, National Geographic joins researchers as they examine the remnants of the asteroid to unlock the clues to help us prevent or survive a future incident. _http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004FN25YW/ref=pe_5140_17941150_snp_dp_ (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004FN25YW/ref=pe_5140_17941150_snp_dp) Cheers, Jim K __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

For removing rust from iron etched slices, I use a product called "Bar Keepers Friend", this can be found in most grocery stores cleaning supplies isle. It comes in a powder form, so you have to make a thick liquid out of it. Wet the meteorite with warm water then apply the liquid BKF. Rub it onto the meteorite with your finger gently. Rubbing to hard can damage the etch. After removing the rust, rinse the piece, soak it in alcohol and bake it dry in an oven about 200 degrees for 2 hrs. You can try the BKF process on a chondrite fragment and use a toothbrush to scrub it. It should work but you might want to experiment with a cheap uncl. NWA first. Now can you just soak the meteorite in a 99% alcohol bath for a couple days and the rust on the surface will some what come off the surface or are there other steps? The the size of the L6 fragment is 3.45g, so I dont have much room to work with. I used a sand/finger nail file and sanded the surface, but not sure if that made a difference and it seems that the L6 meteorite surface is stronger than the sand paper on the finger nail file. If any Listers have some suggestions let me know please :) Shawn Alan IMCA 1633 eBaystore http://shop.ebay.com/photophlow/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p 4340 __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
