2011-08-14 Thread Leigh Anne DelRay
Hi all on the meteorite list,
I have some really cool stuff up on ebay that is ending soon, and I
just thought I would let you guys know.

I am also selling my Burning Man Ticket, since I can't afford to go
this year, so if anyone needs one of those, I know off topic, but I
just thought I would
put the word out.

I have a really cool NWA 869 Carved FLOWER! It is really nice, and so
far it only has one bid, and that bid was wholesale cost, so that one
is a good deal right now.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Stone-Meteorite-CARVED-Flower-NWA-869-Crystal-Sculpture-/250868483055?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0hash=item3a68ed43ef

I have a lot of other really really cool things, like, a Libyan Desert
Glass EGG, an NWA Sphere, a TAZA, an Odessa, a Gao, a Canyon Diablo,

[meteorite-list] Ad: HUGE polished meteorite sphere for sale, also, Big Mundrabilla, Taza, Sikhote-alin slice, Toufassour, Imilac, Seymchan Slice, Large Desrt Glass, Etched Mundrabilla, and much more!

2011-06-19 Thread Leigh Anne DelRay
Hi all on the meteorite list,
I just want to say a little off-topic, thank you for all the people
that came to my birthday party last night, It was the best birthday
party ever, and I have the best friends in the entire world!
There were many meteorite people there, and it was at a virtual museum
for meteorites as well!
As many of you may know, we adopted a puppy that was found in the
parking lot of a convenient store a month ago, and soon thereafter
said puppy came down with Parvo, which is terrible, and expensive
to treat.
So, we have listed on Ebay some of the best of the best of our stuff for sale.
We literally picked out the biggest and best of every meteorite in our
possession and listed them for sale this week to raise money.
They are all ending tonight, Sunday, and I just wanted to let you guys
know b/c some of the bids are still pretty low, and you could probably
get yourself a good deal actually!

First, and probably most impressive is the largest meteorite sphere I
have ever owned, and the most impressive one too, An NWA 869,
perfectly polished and expertly carved by a lovely South African man
who I love dearly.
It weighs almost 3 ounces, and it just gorgeous, it can be seen here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=260798851164ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

The nicest, largest oriented Taza in my collection, which can be seen here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=250835637397ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

An Almost 70 gram super great color and shaped Mundrabilla can be bid on here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=250835658972ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

A really great shaped Imilac with nice desert patina here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=250835636664ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

A really great slice of Seymchan which is gorgeous and mirror polished
and so far still really cheap in price here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=260798827642ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

A really gorgeous Etched mundrabilla with really awesome shape can be seen here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=250835640617ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

A gorgeous shaped and mirror polished slice of Sikhote-alin here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=260787057746ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

The biggest piece of Libyan Desert Glass (175 carats) that I had in my
possession here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=250835647673ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

Not so big, but great on the rare side and super expensive
mesosiderite meteorite that is expertly cut and polished End Cut
Toufassour:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=260798830972ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

And a super nice REALLY oriented Sikhote-alin that is just shocking
cool looking here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=250835636930ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

And a nice moldavite that would make a great pendant here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=250835654669ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

And another nice meteorite that may look good in a pendant of Gold Basin here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=260798837989ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

There are other things like placer gold nuggets and some really cool
trilobites and ammonites, and everything can be seen here:

http://shop.ebay.com/callistodesigns/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562

So, I hope you all can find something that you may want to have in
your home, and you can help a girl out get some vet bills paid, and
you can have a new, nice, awesome meteorite added to your collection
at the same time!
Since I usually sell thumbnail specimens and micro-mounts, as well as
meteorites for jewelry mainly, these are all the largest pieces in my
collection, which means that most of these are too big to make into
jewelry and too big for thumbnail specimens,
but I realize that 'big' or 'large' can be a relative term, since some
of you have only several pound size specimens. Anyway, just saying...
Also, once again, thank you all for coming to my birthday party, it
was a meteorite-gathering good ole time and I had such a blast!

[meteorite-list] OFF TOPIC:GemShow Memorabilia wanted

2011-02-27 Thread Leigh Anne DelRay
Dear Listees:
I have a friend who is interested in acquiring (free or with
cash-money) vintage Tucson Show memorabilia, especially the big
'Tucson Show Guides', from 2000 and earlier.
She is also interested in old photos (bw is fine), as well as
postcards and images from famous shows that no longer exist, like the
Desert Inn and the Congress Street Expo.

Also: does anyone know how long The Show has been held at the Inn
Suites, and how many times over the years it has changed names and
owners?

Thank you guys, love you guys!

 Hello Everyone,

I just received Geoff's book.  I like it.  The book is written for novices
but it has a place on any meteorite collector's shelf.

I particularly like the glossy pages with wonderful pictures.  The pictures
of Geoff and Geoff and Steve hunting meteorites and the meteorites are
fantastic.  Excellent photography and book amounts to a how-to for hunting
 meteorites.

If you haven't purchased one, do so.  You won't regret it.

 Thanks Geoff.  Very nice book.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hunting Meteorites and Meteorite Holiday

Turkey and other good food (like me)!
I can't believe how soon until the Gem show, not much longer !
WEE!!! Like a month eh?!?! I can't wait!

Anyway, I have been majorly slacking due to eating too much food and
sleeping too much, but I do have two really cool things ending in a
couple of hours,

am selling for a friend of mine, but I will post an ad for that then.
But more signed Nininger stuff!

gorgeous! Take a look here:

some cure charms and pendants for sale in a lot,, with an astronomy
theme, with planets and stars and shooting stars, that you guys might

[meteorite-list] AD: Signed Nininger Book - Krinov Book Principles of Meteoritics, and Meteorite Jewelry for Holiday Shopping :)

2010-12-02 Thread Leigh Anne DelRay
Hi there lovely meteorite people!
Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and you are all enjoying the
holiday time :)
I have some really cool auctions up, and the coolest of them all, (I
swear, I have never seen anything so cool) Is a HANDWRITTEN Christmas
Card from HH Nininger and His wife,
Addie, that comes complete with Meteorite Spheroids in it! HOW COOL IS
THAT? And that holiday card is inside a Signed book of his, with a
perfect dust jacket, RARE FIND!!!
I am selling some more stuff off for a friend of mine, and she has
some really really amazing books, they are scarce and hard to find
copies, and like I said with this Christmas card, who
has ever seen that? She also is getting me to sell another Krinov book
for her, this one is the Principles of Meteoritics.

Also, my friend, the lovely Lisa Marie Morrison, is making some lovely
holiday jewelry with Gibeon Meteorites, and she asked me to sell them
on my Ebay site for her, and I told her that I gladly would.
So all you meteorite fellas who need a good Christmas present for your
lovely beautiful women in your life, this is a good opportunity to do
so, (although one of these necklaces would look really good on a guy
too).:)
Help us all raise money, and bid high and bid happy :)

Here are all my new meteorite related auctions this week:

This is that crazy one of a kind SIGNED Nininger book, with a
Handwritten Christmas Card from HH Nininger and his wife (who would

cooking him a Thanksgiving meal,
and including a Christmas card signed by Nininger and his wife, plus

2010-11-16 Thread Leigh Anne DelRay
List,
I must say, it was TOTALLY AMAZING to be there last night and to see
that! It was like our little baby, the three of us! hee hee

Richard was so awesome and you are right Greg, we felt so privileged
to just be a part of something like that, just being the 'regular old
folk' that we are!
I mean it was just the coolest to be the first people to see something
like that! I didn't think that I would have been so jazzed, but by the
night's end I was pretty rowdy and loud. It was really addictive too,
so I can see why you came back a few times Greg!
Anyway, Thank you Richard for such a great time, and if anyone gets
images of our baby, I would love to see them.

I doubt there is anyone on this list that does not know Lisa Marie Morrison
 and
 Leigh Anne DelRay Cromwell.

Last night they visited me at the Catalina Sky Survey's 60 telescope on Mt.
Lemmon. Lisa Marie is writing an article about CSS for the EZ Guide that
 gets
distributed during the Tucson Gem Mineral Shows each year Leigh Anne
 joined
her as her photographer. I hope you all get a chance to check it out when
 your
 where for the shows.

While they were here they got to see how we observer and survey for NEOs. I
commented that while we can find NEOs at any time of the night, they tend to
start showing up after midnight, so I wasn't sure if they'd get to see
 anything
 other than Main Belt Asteroids.

Within minutes of me saying that a new NEO popped up on the screen. It turns
 out
to be a tiny rock, only about 15 feet in diameter, but it makes a special
 showing today.

Around 3:45 Universal time (or GMT or Zulu time if you like) this Near Earth
Asteroid, 2010 WA, will make an extraordinary close approach to the Earth,
passing a mere 20,000 miles about the surface. That's closer than
 Geosynchronous
 orbiting satellites!

 Nice catch ladies!

Re: [meteorite-list] Shivalingams impactites?

2009-09-26 Thread Leigh Anne DelRay
Villagers gather this unique Crypto-crystalline quartz (a form of
jasper with impurities) from shallow river beds. A natural formation,
geologists theorize that the iron oxide embedded in the stone was
impregnated in the river bed millions of years ago by a meteorite.

So this website says, that is all I know. Could easily be crap though.

In this case, based on gross physical appearance, I'd say the shiva

tell.  Given the fact that they're definitely more coarse-grained than
other varieties like chalcedony and agate, I'm not even sure
'cryptocrystalline is the correct way to describe them - perhaps
someone else who has a background in geology/mineralogy and is
familiar with shiva lingams can comment here.
The layering that can be seen in them is reminiscent of banded
claystones; that's why I said sedimentary, but I could well be wrong.

2009-08-31 Thread Leigh Anne DelRay
Bob,
It's weird we bought this house with a certificate of no termites, and
a warranty if they were to appear in 1 year after purchase, they would
be treated immediatly.
We of course tried to cash in on that first thing, and they said that
it was only for 'subterranean termites', and not dry wood termites,
these are two separate species apparently. And the company said that
they weren't hired to look for dry wood termites in the inspection,
b/c that type of termite is so rare here.
We were also the victims of trusting the guy that sold us the house,
who told us it was 'all good' as he put it.
go figure,
LA
p.s. The company that we had the termite warranty with gave us a
courtesy treatment, but that doesn't really help the damage, it just
killed them in the section that treated. But not even all of them,
just some of them. (I think at this point it just slows them down, as
there are millions). There is not a way to get back the integrity of
that wood ever.

Rob,
no, unfortunately, this is mine, all mine. It is ridiculous...
I SOOO wish I was selling this for someone else.
I can't even believe how bad it was. We just took this all apart, and
under the paint, all the wood was the consistency of graham crackers.
It didn't even needed to be properly demolished with any tools, we
could just crumble it with our hands.
I am not even clear how our front door has not just fallen out, b/c
the frame that holds it is just sawdust.
We realized it was a bigger job than us, so we are getting quotes to
have it professionally fixed.

Re: [meteorite-list] Here's to making Lemonade out of lemons..

2009-08-31 Thread Leigh Anne DelRay
Ed,
The termite inspection was done with the guy that was selling it to
us. The house was in a trust and willed to that guy, and he had an
inspection, and let us know that there had been some termite problems
in the past, but it was 'all good now', and we believed him
(unfortunately).
The pest control people have come out and looked at it, and we had two
different ones come just for advice really, and they said that they
two colonies (they are in two rooms in my house) are around 10 -15
years old. And may have been slowed down from time to time with
treatments, but probably never killed off, as the drywood termites are
 hard to kill.
They live their entire lives inside the boards, and die in the boards,
never really ever surface, and never eat through paint or finish, so
you never really see them.
We were very very naive, this was a first house for both of us, we
didn't really know what we were doing, (clearly huh?)
Thanks for everyone's thoughts, it means a lot to me,
only 152 days until the Tucson Gem Show 2010, and we can all be together.

Did you not have a termite inspection done prior to buying?  If you did, is
there no legal recourse for you?  That seems like an awful lot of damage for
less than one year's occupancy either by you or the termites for an
 inspector to miss!

In the exclusive world of meteorite brokers, his rise has been, well ...
 By Jay MacDonald

Twelve years ago, a stock boy at Target purchased a chunk of space debris at
the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show that changed his life forever.

He has not only held pieces of the moon and Mars in his hands -- he has
 tasted them.

I've eaten a piece of every moon rock and Mars rock that I have purchased
or found, just to say I did it, he chuckles. We are all made of space
 rock.

Welcome to the out-of-this-world life of Michael Farmer, aka Meteorite Guy,
one of only about 20 professional meteorite brokers -- on this planet
 anyway.

 Building a rock-solid empire
Farmer was a 25-year-old college student attending the University of Arizona
on the G.I. Bill, stocking shelves part time and vaguely drifting toward a
career with the CIA when he happened to wander into the largest gem and
 mineral show on earth.

I bought a rock (meteorite) for $70 and got so fascinated with it that it
changed the course of my life, Farmer recalls. When I saw it, I thought,
'Wow, I'm holding a piece of outer space!'

Anxious to find more, he scoured the gem show site until he met an old-timer
who had a box of 40 meteorites hidden under the table. His asking price:
 $4,000 for the box.

I had no money at the time, so I had to beg and borrow to buy the box,
Farmer recalls. When I started researching the meteorites, I found that
that they were from a very rare collection, and I quadrupled my money on
those stones in about 48 hours. That's when I realized you could actually
 make money doing this.

Within a year, Farmer had earned enough to make the first of dozens of trips
to Africa, initially focusing on the Sahara Desert.

Why the desert? Prepare to be mentally humbled.

Leigh Anne, I do have some lunar cutting dust from many different lunar

add the dust, but it is a little gritty towards the end of the drink!

[meteorite-list] AD: SIGNED Krinov Sikhote-Alin Book for sale - LOW PRICE

2009-08-06 Thread Leigh Anne DelRay
Hi Meteorite people (my favorite people),
I just wanted to give you all a heads up that I am selling a SIGNED
Krinov book, or maybe it should be called a booklet.

I have started it out low, and I have put a reserve on it.
I was told I would be beaten with a stick if it went for too low, but
the reserve is shockingly low for such a rare piece.

It is signed by Krinov himself and the inscription is written out to
Dr. Brian Mason.
Dr. Brain Mason was born in New Zealand in 1917, he's a geochemist and
pioneer in the study of meteorites.
His extensive list of publications includes Meteorites (1962) a
standard work in the field.
He was a curator at the American Museum of Natural History, and from
1965, curator of meteorites at the Smithsonian Institution, where he
is now Curator Emeritus.

Thought if anyone would want this it would be someone on this list...

Here is the auction site :

Hopefully that link works properly. I am never very good at these e-mails.

Re: [meteorite-list] Thin Section collecting - storage

2009-01-07 Thread Leigh Anne DelRay
Thanks so much for all of your help, I really appreciate it.
I was wondering how many people keep them inside those little plastic cases,
verses, leaving them naked to be stored like these? I wonder if the plastic
cases are just because people don't have a cabinet, or, would the cabinet need
to accomodate these plastic case around every slide.
Thanks,
Leigh Anne

Is there a protective type case that is typical of thin

[meteorite-list] what is the most primitve meteorite? or do we even know?

2008-04-15 Thread Leigh Anne DelRay
Dear Listees~

I was wondering if anyone knows what the oldest (as in
most primitive) meteorite is? I was thinking it was
Allende, b/c it is believed to be of extra-solar
origin, but is there another one that is more
primitive than that? Is there one that is older than
our own solar system?
Thanks for letting me pick your brains.

I spent 2 weeks down there hunting down stones, and

agricultural land and dominated by vineyards.
Unfortunately, there is never plowing in vineyards,
so no more stones will be found. (maybe 1 or 2 in
the coming years) Most of my time was spent in
public outreach and teaching people how to identify
 stones.

TKW is 5 kg at this time. I recovered 2.3kg. Looks
like an H4 or H5 Ordinary Chondrite.

Conditions were not good for recovery, almost all
stones punched into the soft ground 1/4 meters.
Those stones that were recovered were because they
hit near someone or hit a road.

It had thunder of a sonic boom, resident says
BY DON WALKER
FLORIDA TODAY
April 11, 2007

The explosion was heard miles away.

At Pineda Crossing, near the Suntree subdivision, John Panik said he was
having trouble sleeping, got out of bed and turned on the television
just before 3 a.m.

I was sitting there and suddenly there was a loud boom, Panik said.
It shook the windows - not like a big rattle, but a little one. I
thought, 'That's not normal.'

The clock read 3:30 a.m. Panik called the Brevard County Sheriff's
Office, and was told by dispatcher they'd send a deputy out to check out
the area. He also contacted Patrick Air Force Base, and was told they
didn't know anything about it.

I thought it was a sonic boom, he said. That's what I told the
sheriff. Like the shuttle returning, but usually you hear two booms, not
one.

This morning, reports of the explosion were all over the television.

Everybody freaked out. My wife said, 'Oh, you did hear something,'
Panik said.

There have also been calls to FLORIDA TODAY from residents in Satellite
Beach who heard the explosion.

This story is developing. If you heard the explosion and would like to
comment, please contact Walker at 242-3527 or e-mail
[EMAIL PROTECTED] . Please include name and a phone number.
