[meteorite-list] Bad Anniversary

2003-09-11 Thread Maccers531
Matteo,
Thank You for remembering and commenting on the national tragedy that
happened two years ago. No one here has forgotten it still is a sad day for
many of us.
I live in a Chicago suburb and many people here are conducting fundraisers
benefiting the people who lost so many in New York.
Hopefully one day everyone who was involved with that cowardly act will pay
for it.

Regards,
Bob Evans

[meteorite-list] Park Forest Dried up?

2003-08-31 Thread Maccers531
Sorry Steve ,
Better luck next time. Couldn't make it to join the hunt today... had to work
( even being self employed didn't permit the time to do so). But Im going
tomorrow. As far as the possibility of new finds, I found one individual on
6/3/03 ( 8 grams ) and one frag on 6/26/03 ( 7 grams ). Both were found in Crete.
My last 5 or 6 times hunting yielded nothing .
The last time , I hunted areas near Western Avenue in Park Forest just south
of Rt. 30. I thought I would try areas that were hit by larger pieces than
Steger and Crete. I also searched nearby the Garza and Phil Jones residences. I
really didn't realize how close the two houses were to one another. Most of
that area is residential, so that limits places to look.
I met a guy named Bob Mathias back when it first fell . He was fortunate to
find a 1.2 Kilo individual , that he found in the ground. To this day I still
dont know where he found it. Nice guy, just a little too reserved. He sold that
big one to the Field Museum.
Not sure what he got for it , probably more than $ 10K. Ive tried the forest
preserves. And for anyone planning on searching them , good luck , I could
barely walk through them . They are very dense. Using a metal detector would
probably be senseless too.
I still know a few locals who have some fresh specimens, but they arent
interested in selling them right now . However they were willing to tell me where
they found them.
I have searched those areas and come up with nothing.
Well , who knows, I live about 45 minutes from Park Forest ... maybe one
day I'll stumble upon the main mass( if there is one out there).
I know that persistence was the key to my last finds. And if they can be
found 3 months after the fall, why not 6 or 9 months after.

[meteorite-list] Park Forest Oriented Nosecone on auction

2003-08-14 Thread Maccers531
Dear List,

I just put one of my finest Park forest Specimens up for auction on ebay.
It is an oriented individual nosecone shaped , 95% thick crust and lipping ,
very fresh.
I tried my best to take good enough pictures to show the quality . but as
we all know it always looks better in person.
Ive seen plenty of PF specimens , none come close to this shape.
The ebay item # is 2187316717
If anyone has any questions about this piece please feel free to contact me.

If anyone is interested in this piece , I am interested in complete stony
individuals for a possible trade ( No NWA ) . so if your tired of any larger
individuals in your collection, maybe this is the opportunity for you.
I m pretty sure that any oriented Park Forests ,large or small will be very
difficult if not impossible to acquire.
I will only be willing to do a trade as long as the reserve isnt met.

Thanks

[meteorite-list] Norwood Square Shopping center , Park Forest Update

2003-08-05 Thread Maccers531
To all those interested in the possibility of there being specimens on the
roof of the Norwood Square shopping complex, ( based on what Mark Jacksons said
in his email ), forget it !
I spent an hour on the roof today ... No meteorites, no impact holes, and
no apparent signs of any recent roof repair.
As far as his finds good job. That area was pretty much the center of
some big impacts. It is about one block from Winslow St. I searched that parking
lot profusely , its where the tow truck that was hit was parked. The one that
I bought all of the fragments from the owner. So naturally I searched it big
time.
I know that Mike Farmer and Steve Arnold searched it as well.
Maybe his find rolled off the roof , or possibly a lawnmower kicked it up.

Oh well , nice job Mark

[meteorite-list] Park Forest Pictures

2003-07-23 Thread Maccers531
Hello List,
I will be hunting Park Forest this weekend and I will be photographing impact
sites as an addition to my specimen collection. I thought that this may be
something that other collectors may be interested in , especially collectors
that couldn't make it to Park Forest when the fall occurred.

I will be photographing the following:
The Park Forest Fire station
The Garza residence
Phil Jones residence in Flossmore
Winslow Street residence
Navarro Residence

I did make several contacts with the homeowners to get the approval. All of
these pictures will be from the exterior only!!
I also will be taking pictures of areas with multiple impacts:
Central Park in Park Forest
Crete police department
235 Street in Steger
Steger Road

I am also open for suggestions of other areas to be photographed.
Iam doing this strictly for a convenience to other collectors. Im estimating
that the cost of the reprints and postage within the US will be $10.00 .
I am planning on getting 5 x 7 pictures. I do use a high quality camera.

If anyone is interested in this please email me off list.

Thanks
Bob Evans

Fwd: [meteorite-list] item#2183522064: ## BEAUTIFUL IRON METEORITE 843 GRAM...

2003-07-13 Thread Maccers531

---BeginMessage---
Gregory,
Id have to agree with you completely. I never new meteorites were so readily
available til I purchased my first 7 months ago on ebay. I had zero knowlege
of them before my first acquistion. After my first purchase my desire to learn
more and collect more was incredible. I live in Illinois and did well
collecting specimens of the Park Forest fall.
Had I not purchased my first meteorite on ebay , I doubt I would have
searched or even had the knowlege to search a strewnfield .So I guess it was great
timing for me to start collecting.
