Re: [meteorite-list] FREE IMILAC Registration
Hi- The Campo was located by a metal detector and recovered by Hans Koser. It will be on display at the InnSuites. For those with a budget that's a bit more down to earth, please consider that the following meteorites will SELL at the Macovich Auction for as little as (per gram) $ 6 -- Bilanga $62 -- Honolulu $38 -- Cold Bokkeveld $77 -- Ensisheim $36 -- Efremovka $33 -- Juvinas $35 -- Mayo Belwa $18 -- Norton County $40 -- Pasamonte $ 4 -- Pultusk $50 -- Shallowater $20 -- Stannern $32 -- Vigarano and LA001 -- $750/g and that's just a small sample of some of the stellar opportunities http://www.macovich.com __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites of the Vienna Collection
Tabor is indeed a great meteorite. And a specimen of this historic stone is now available at no reserve. http://www.macovich.com/auction-2003/pages/005-lot.html And that's just for starters... Howdy, What a stunning collection of specimens. Thank you for sharing them with us. I was especially impressed with the Tabor stone. Thanks again Christian! Re: [meteorite-list] Re: Steve Schoner
Insert your own email in that space, Matteo. And thanks so much for writing. I'm confident that by Steve becoming tangibly aware of what we all feel in our hearts will greatly assist in his recovery. As it regards the matter of Steve's recovery, I've received a handful of emails enquiring about Steve's prognosis given the apparent viral source of his illness. Unfortunately, there has been an injury to the brain, and like any other injury to the brain, there must be an extensive period of rehabilitation. The extent and trajectory of Steve's recovery cannot be determined at this time. To echo Walter's sentiments, Steve became a meteorite enthusiast as a teenager. He sought-out Harvey Nininger as a kid and an engaging photo of Steve and Nininger (which appeared in Meteorite) was taken around this time--and understand, this is B.B...Before Bob). Much later Steve became adamant about the existence of a large pallasitic mass in the Glorieta strewn field. Seventy trips of 2-3 weeks in inhospitable terrain over a fifteen year period were spent searching for, among other things, validation. And then he found it. Again, here is the email link to drop a note to Steve, a National Park Ranger, Civil War expert, meteorite hunter extraordinaire, gentle soul and remarkable man: http://www.flagstaffmedicalcenter.com/pp_fmc/fmc_email_patient.htm __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] METEORITE TIMES
Walter and List- I am afraid that I am the individual inadvertently responsible for Paul and Jim pulling the plug on Meteorite Times, and I feel so terribly about this. I brought a matter to their attention which was not a matter of ego, but a matter of the misuse of the Market Trends column. Yesterday I wrote the attached letter to Michael Blood, and copied Paul and Jim, as I believed they needed to be made aware of an ethical matter. Subsequently, and most significantly, I explicitly asked Paul and Jim to not fire Blood as I did not want this situation to get overblown. I had no idea that I would also have to mention that they should not eliminate Meteorite Times! Obviously, there was other stuff in the mix for them, but this does not lessen my personal upset. I've implored Paul and Jim to reconsider their decision and hate the idea of feeling as if I'm at all connected to the loss, however inadvertent, to something has become treasured by all of us in the meteorite community. While I cannot be responsible for Blood electing to misuse his column any more than I can be responsible for Paul and Jim electing to close shop, nonetheless I feel terribly...I'm really hurting inside. I am lobbying Paul and Jim vigorously to rescind their decision, and I hope that this state of affairs is temporary given the swell of support now being voiced. I'm truly sorry. Sincerely, Darryl Date: Wed, 08 Jan 2003 20:53:28 -0500 To: Michael L Blood [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: Darryl Pitt [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Blood Market Trends Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Michael- I was directed to your Market Trends column in the new Meteorite Times. You have referred to the two of us being competitors in Tucson, and that's fine, but it seems you don't want to compete on a level playing field. Your Market Trends column is the latest case in point. While providing your readers an overview of the upcoming Tucson show, you devote the first part of your column to a self-serving advertisement on your own auction--and completely fail to mention the Macovich sale, which I am informed is not small potatoes. I don't believe that Paul and Jim entrusted you with a column to report on meteorite market trends so you could advance your personal agenda. What's more troubling, however, is the sneaky, clandestine editorializing advancing this agenda. The following paragraph is a case in point: For the first year ever, Mike Farmer will have a room in fact, for that matter, so will Eric Olson, as they are teaming up in room 316 of Inn Suites the room occupied over the last several years by the Labennes. Jim Strope will be displaying a few select pieces in this room, as well, so, THIS WILL CONTINUE TO BE A ROOM WELL WORTH CHECKING OUT. Of course, it's hardly a coincidence that the one room you've written about also happens to be the very same room in which you will be exhibiting the meteorites for your auction! Mike, this is deceptive...and unethical. Room 316 is the one room which you're ethically bound to not write one word about because of the conflict of interests. Anyone in the business of publishing or news dissemination would instantly lose their job over this kind of thing. The bottom line is that you have exploited Meteorite Times--as well as Paul and Jim--and you've betrayed your readers' trust, which is to say nothing of your responsibility to be objective. Look, I really do wish you a lot of luck with your auction, truly. I think you know this. Again, I only wish that you would compete honorably. [meteorite-list] New York Times Correction
There is a short article in The New York Times that reviews the recent Willamette meteorite saga. In the article it refers to the Macovich Collection as the largest private collection of meteorites in the world. Of course, this is not accurate, and upon seeing the story on NYTIMES.COM a short while ago, I immediately advised the reporter/writer of the same. (While the Macovich Collection is the preeminent collection of aesthetic irons, there are several private collections that are much larger in overall scope...value...etc.) The reporter, Ken Chang, who has been researching the story over the past two days, just indicated to me via email that there were extensive edits made to the piece. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Update - InnSuites Meteorite Auction
Hi Folks! Last chance! I have only twelve (12) slots remaining for consignments for the Second Annual Meteorite Auction at the InnSuites in Tucson on Sunday, February 10th. If you wish to make a consignment, please get in touch QUICKLY! Further exciting news: --We have snagged auctioneer Claudia Florian--a former auctioneer for Phillips Sothebys--to run this sale; --The advertisement in the current issue of Smithsonian has already resulted in dozens of catalog requests! --Meteorites confirmed to be offered include, L'Aigle, NWA482, Camel Donga, Manych, GV, Steinbach, Chassigny, Barbotan, Mauerkirchen, Ensisheim, Shalka, Felix, etc. --Once again, if you are an exhibitor at the Arizona Mineral Fossil Show, you are entitled to consign one lot without having to pay a consignor's fee (courtesy of the Macovich Collection and the Great Zinn). The Event: The InnSuites Meteorite Auction Date: Sunday, February 10th 10.30 AM Location: InnSuites, Tucson / Poolside Early Registration/Preview: February 1-9 - 10.00AM - 6.00PM Day-of Registration/Preview: February 10 - 9.30-10.30AM Number of lots: 100 Targeted price point: $200 to $25,000 Lots with no reserve: ~40% Consignor's fee: 10.0% Buyer's fee: 12.5% Limit per consignor: 4 lots Sell-through fee: 3% Insurance (if desired): 1% QUESTIONS: Why should I consider consigning a meteorite to this sale? 1. Guaranteed Interest. This offering will be heavily promoted. We are also building on an outstanding buzz from last year's sale. Further, a number of outstanding meteorites will be offered with NO RESERVES; 2. Marketing commitment. $4000 in dedicated advertising will be spent publicizing this event; 3. Location. Host to one of Tucsons preeminent shows, the InnSuites is centrally located and is indisputably Meteorite Central in Tucson; Where do I sign up? Right here. Please fill-in the following info. A formal consignment form will be sent to you provided that your property is accepted for this auction. [My interest is only in creating a marketplace for fine meteorites that are priced to sell, and to present this property to a crowd that is eager to participate in an auction filled with such opportunities.] Name Street Address Apartment or Suite City State Zip Daytime phone Evening phone Email Description of each proposed consignment: --Slice or End or Complete or Fragment --No crust or ~25%, ~50%, ~75% or 95+% crust --Condition and extent of weathering Measurement (H x W x D): Weight: Provenance: Reserve: Will you be present at the auction? Can you explain what a reserve is? A reserve is the absolute lowest fee that consignors accept PRIOR to the deduction of the 10% consignor's fee. The reserve is not published in the catalog. However, consignments with reserves will be indicated in the catalog with a bullet (*). Why would I want a reserve? Reserves are used as a mechanism to protect the consignor so that an item will not sell for too low a price. However, should a consignments estimated value be less than $300, no reserve will be allowed. What are estimated values? A guideline of what it is believed the consignment should bring at auction. Do you prefer consignments with either no reserve or low reserves? Yes. Consignments with no reserves or modest reserves are far more likely to result in a successful sale. Can I insist on a high reserve? No. If the reserve you wish to set is, in my estimation, too high, I will refuse the consignment. The philosophy of this sale is to offer choice merchandise that is attractively priced, which will result in a spirited marketplace. Are high reserves the only consideration in rejecting a consignment? No. If I believe the consignment competes with too many other similar consignments, it will be rejected. Consignments will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. As a consignor to the InnSuites auction, how much will this cost me? If your consignment sells, your cost will be 10% of the hammer price (the highest bid). If your lot fails to sell, the sell-through fee (and insurance, if so desired) will result in a cost of either 3% or 4% (w/insurance) of the reserve price of the consignment. Are there deadlines to be a consignor? Yes. As a result of catalog deadlines (paper and cyber) the deadline will be whenever the twelve slots are filled...my guess is by Tuesday, January 8th. There will be a catalog? There will be printed listing available at the InnSuites room 404, as well as a page at Macovich.com. Is there a deadline for physically accepting consignments? Consignments will be physically accepted at the InnSuites room 404 commencing on February 1st for Early Preview. The latest a consignment will be physically accepted 12:00 Noon on February 5th. If your consignment does not arrive by this time, it will not be included in the auction. If you are a registered consignor and fail to deliver your consignment, you will still be assessed a 3%
