Re: [meteorite-list] Crater Meteorites?

Hi Richard,

The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Meteorites by R, Norton, Appendix G, Known
terrestrial impact craters, identifies the craters that have meteorites found
with them.

With Gebel Kamil widely covered in the news lately, it got me thinking a bit
more about crater producing meteorites. My collection contains a number of

Besides Gebel Kamil, Canyon Diablo, Odessa, Campo, Sikhote, Carancas, Henbury
all immediately come to mind as collectible meteorites that produced craters. I
searched the Meteoritical Bulletin Database for the text keyword crater and
got 208 returns as the result.

While some of these are only named meteorites, the vast majority of the returns
are coming from the Earth Impact Database. This majority is listed as Impact
Crater as the type.

I'm wondering if there is a list somewhere of meteorites that are associated
with craters? That would make it easier to determine if a impact structure also
has (collectible) meteorites associated with it.

Thanks

It seems that the solution to these high ebay fees is a no brainer. With so
many meteorite dealers on the met-list, all of you should get together and have
your auctions on a new site. An existing site or create your own. Possibly
create a Meteorite Dealers Association that runs it and keeps it free of
bogus sellers. I'm sure that a fee smaller than ebay's would pay for the site's

Hi Walter,

I agree 100% with you. At least 50% of the meteorite listings on ebay come from
the people on this forum. If they can put there differences and ego's aside
long enough to agree on an auction site, it would be to there benefit. The ebay
meteorite buyers would find the new auction site. It would only work if enough
sellers agree to a new site. News travels fast in the meteorite community.

Jim K

Hi Mike,

For years I was the only meteorite seller at Astro Auction Kim Poor (the
site administrator) asked me to bring more meteorite business to the site.
I can't tell you how much Canyon Diablo I sold there.

I informed a few dealers Astro Auction a few years ago but they never took
advantage of the site. No one listed anything.

Ironically Kim and Novaspace Galleries (the brick and morter store behind
Astro Auction) are located in of all places, Tucson.

Not too long ago I mentioned Cloudynights.com as an alternative to ebay.
Totally free of fees. The time it takes to list an item is 30 seconds to
one minute. How many new dealers started listing there? None.

I see is that you are going to miss a massive chunk of the exposure that
eBay provides.

Not really. List meteorites at both sites. They are not mutually
exclusive.

The impetus for using sites other than ebay has to come from dealers, not
buyers.

What did they say in the movie, build it and they will come. Well, you
won't be playing baseball in the middle of a cornfield. You gotta build the
stadium first.

Hi Jim,

It's been tried before, most recently Eric W. tried it. (if memory
serves me correctly)

The problem is, many meteorite dealers are very competitive with each
other, and I think if a dealer owns/runs the auction site, some other
dealers will avoid it - no matter who that dealer/owner is.

But I agree that a meteorite auction site (with traffic) would be great. :)

Valley girl Reg (Catherine Mary Stewart) and her sister (Kelli Maroney)

Re: [meteorite-list] Labeling specimens

2010-02-28 Thread meteoriteman

Hi everyone,

Thought I'd throw in my two cents on this interesting topic. First, painting
numbers on a meteorite for identification purposes is only good if you have a
master sheet that translates that number into a specific meteorite. If that
sheet is lost the painted number is useless.

I prefer having photo's on the master sheet along with all the pertinent
information such as date of purchase, classification, weight, purchased from,
etc. etc. etc. I believe that a photo is as good as a fingerprint for
identification. A small label with some corresponding info and number inserted
into or on the container (jem jar or riker)for smaller specimens is also
helpful.

If digital photography was available back in the day, I wonder how many
meteorites would have painted numbers on them. Personally purchasing a
meteorite with a number painted on it would be a turn off for me. Unless it's a
historic rare piece.

Hi Jim and List,

I used a Dremel tool to carefully carve and identification number into
all of my specimens.  I put the name of the specimen, date, origin,
type, what I paid for it, catalogue number, and 5 things I like about
it using only adjectives.  All of this information is carved in
letters that are 1mm x 1mm.  If the specimen is too small for these
engravings, then I buy new duplicate material which I then superglue
to the existing specimen.  When the specimen becomes big enough to
hold the engravings, I also make an extra note that shows how many
additional pieces were superglued into place to provide room for the
labels.  Finally, I dunk the specimen into clear acrylic and let it
harden into a fun shape (like a star or rhombus), which I then put
into my cabinet for posterity. ;)

Best regards,

Meteorite cause terror today on 2 Mexican states Hidalgo and Puebla

It crash with loud explosion against a bridge at 6:30 PM

[link to www.eluniversal.com.mx]

babelfish translation

[link to babelfish.yahoo.com]

A light accompanied by a roar, that swayed houses and buildings of about five
municipalities of Puebla and Hidalgo, was attributed to the fall of a
meteorite.

The place of the impact would have been the municipality of Ahuazotepec,
Puebla, adjacent with Cuautepec, Noble, where a bridge collapsed and caused
tension between people, according to versions of municipal authorities.

The facts registered this Wednesday to the edge of the 18:30 hours between both
populations, to where the Army arrived to surround the zone.

The roar was listened to in Ahuazotepec and Huachinango, communities of Puebla,
as well as in Tulancingo, Cuautepec and Metepec, pertaining to Noble.

Munícipe of Cuautepec, Eduardo Castelán, confirmed the event, although later it
said that it did not have precise data and it even commented that would have
been to the 15:30 hours.

Civil defense of Noble informed that the lines of aid had been colapsado with
calls of frightened people who requested an explanation exceeds what was
happening, after the outbreak that broke windows.

Agents of security of the three hidalguenses demarcations, as well as of Civil
defense and firemen '' combed '' the zone; until the eve they did not give
concrete information.

The director of state Civil defense, Miguel Garci'a Count, said to have
received the report thus investigated in the airports the binnacles since a

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorwrongs

2009-12-18 Thread meteoriteman

I received a sample of Joe's meteorwrong a couple of months ago when it was
still being tested by the lab. Like the Counte, my first impression was that it
was to light in weight to be a meteorite. Also the numerous vesicles were a bad
sign. I tested it for nickel content and got a weak response, but nickel is
there. I think it is rust prone cause of the weak nickel content. Applying a
coat of automotive wax will help protect it from rusting. I also tested it for
density and got 2.6 density. A meteorite with that much metal in it would have
a density of at least 3.5. It's probably slag, but most slags that I have found
have a different metal disbursement, that's in circular droplets instead if the
ribbon type in Joe's specimen. It's a great meteowrong!

A couple of years ago I found one that is similar to Joe's. At first I thought
it might be a lunar, but it's slag also. Here's a few photo's of it.

[meteorite-list] Nickel test

2009-11-17 Thread meteoriteman

Hi everyone, recently while testing some of my possible meteorites finds from
the Park Forest strewnfield, I made an interesting discovery. I use the method
described in the Field Guide to Meteors and Meteorites by Richard Norton,
test method 2. I inadvertently left the specimen soaking in the distilled
vinegar overnight. The next day when I poured in the ammonia, the liquid turned
blue. If I add a drop of the dimethylglyoxime solution, the liquid will change
color to red. My question is, is the dimethylglyoxime necessary? Seems that the
blue color indicates the presents of nickel.

Cheers,

Re: [meteorite-list] Best ways to send payments from Canada to Morocco?

2009-11-11 Thread meteoriteman

I made an attempt to buy a meteorite from a Morocco dealer that would only
accept payment by wire transfer, bank to bank. The price of the meteorite was
$65US and my bank wanted to charge me a fee of $40 to make the transfer. Unless
you plan to buy in volume, this is not a good way to pay. I wonder why they
won't take paypal?

[meteorite-list] THANKS/Jake

2002-07-26 Thread Meteoriteman

Hi all; We have just returned from vacationI am disturbed by alot of
what I read in my mailbox...wow.
anyway: My gram's worth is, and has been from the beginning of the IMCA
that:
IMCA=AUTHENTICTY ( and related issues to authenticity only...)
Thats it. Nothing else concerns the IMCA...not racism views of members,
not political views of members , not religious views of members...not fights
among members...not sexual preferences of members etc etc etc...simply the
AUTHENTICITY of meteorite material by a reputable group.
It is my hope that the IMCA can remain focused on it's founding objective.
 Hope all are well!

[meteorite-list] EBAY THEFT/ Jake

2002-07-17 Thread Meteoriteman

Hi All: Walter Branch has brought to my attention that an ebay seller has
stolen not only my auction text...but also left my business name in the
paragrah too! What a jerk!
The THEIF uses the ebay name of: paolo2000
The auction's title is Mars Meteorite Dag 476 and the
Item # 2119728043.
ALL of you that have seen my DaG476 auction's, will recognize the text
and catch phrase I always use...it is a laugher that this person would think
they could simply copy and paste my text as their own...and even worse that
they left my business name in the paragraph!
I have sent emails to the seller/theif ...and ebay.
Just wanted to let you all know it is NOT ME. I sell ONLY under my
regular name [EMAIL PROTECTED].
Thanks again Walter, VERY much...and best to all. Hope everyone is
enjoying their summer...

Re: [meteorite-list] Testing on the list - AOL sucks

2002-03-11 Thread Meteoriteman

The reason I tolerate AOL and it's problems, are a GREAT many of my
friends, FAMILY and associates, have AOL...and the dollar amount saved by
using the instant messenger feature is just super! You save BIG BUCKS on
the phone bill and can communicate much more often and keep in-touch even
when many of us are on the road.
Of course, I still make my weekly phone calls as to hear the voices
(which is better and more personal)...but that savings through the week does
add-up FAST.
Untill everyone else switches away from AOL to another Instant Messenger
service...I have to keep it.

2002-03-07 Thread Meteoriteman

Hi all; Please NOTE; The person with the ebay auction that Matteo first
wrote about is GEOPALEO GUY , on ebay.

NOT PALEOGUY. Paleoguy is Dan Ryder of Texas who is a paleontologist
and whom I had dinner with in Tucson. Real nice young man. Deals in
Echinoids, Amber, trilobites etc...

I state this clarification as some of you have used both names to
indicate the same person...and they are not.

Re: [meteorite-list] Fw: Willamette Meteorite Donation

2002-02-15 Thread Meteoriteman

Hi Matt and list: Matt; That is a VERY generous thing for you and your
partners to do! I am sure the tribe will appreciate the offer very much.
After reading what is available on the topic, I think that the AMNH
could/might donate a piece. That was a sizable chunk (28 pounds? I believe I
read) that they traded for the martian material...might not be a bad gesture
to let the indians have a pound or two (Although they have no claim to any at
all).
anyway; VERY NICE that you all are making the offer!
   Bravo!

[meteorite-list] New Meteorite?/ JAKE/Humor

2002-01-31 Thread Meteoriteman

Hello all: As I sit here getting ready for the annual pilgrimage to
Tucson, it snow very heavy. We are expecting 12-17 inches here in the
Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, todaywith the added bonus of
freezing rain tonight.
   I am so excited.
As I was looking out the window this morning while drinking my hot cup of
decaf tea, I noticed something falling from the sky.
I quickly put on my Wolverines and headed out. Eventually I found the
BURNING mass in the snow...which was melted away...and I did notice a tail
and what appeared to be four legs, resembling a dog. The dog had fell from
the heavens and hit a rock. UGH for the dog.
I have named this dog-meteorite POUNDER...as it Pounded that rock
pretty darn good!
I have decided, as a special gift to my list friends, to bring the
remains with me to Tucson, and planned on selling it off there.
I am thinking of quarter-pound lots.
You would need $1.00 for such a lot...and you MUST bring your own
burger bun.
simply look for the sign that says Quarter Pounders.
PS: Cheese is extra $.10 and simply ask for Quarter pounder with cheese.
Supplies are limited as I estimate weight of this fall at only 10
kilos...apparently this dog-meteorite was quite friable!
Best wishes; See ya in Tucson; jake
