[meteorite-list] RE: Meteorite Talk/Program Topics

2005-03-19 Thread Michael Gallant
Hi Al, and All,
Your ideas for list discussion are wonderful. Matter of fact, these were
the very topics I had hoped for when I joined the list several years
ago. I kept "hanging in there" hoping the bad seeds would go away and
leave a comfortable forum to promote and foster our fascinating hobby. I
guess to some degree that has happened.

A few years ago, my wife (teacher) conned me into doing my wacky science
wizard and meteorite dude act for her students and well, I guess, it was
pretty good as have been doing it ever since. “Giveaways” like a few
dozen copies of Roman’s donated 2003 Millennium calendar and small NWA’s
certainly didn’t hurt either ;>)…. (thanks again Roman!). Obviously, I
get a hoot out of it too!

Interesting note. From an elementary teacher’s point of view, many
elementary teachers tend to dread teaching science. Technology /
discoveries tends to out pace the textbooks making the teachers feel
somewhat uncomfortable. As a result, many teachers will welcome (in some
cases pleading!!) for “experts” into the classrooms.

To trade ideas for quality presentations, demonstration aids and other
"wow" factors (audiences of all ages) would be great! This sure is a
different approach than when I was in school, as I remember sitting
though those boring physics movies of the oscillating white ball against
the black background with that monotone narration... I’m absolutely
convinced that a physicist discovered hypnosis!!

I really hope the “silent” list folk will be more willing to come forth
and offer their experience in the education of our future space rock
caretakers.

Best wishes,
Mike

RE: [meteorite-list] NWA's, "Dealers", Science, & NomCom

2004-11-25 Thread Michael Gallant
Hello Jeff,
First off, I would like to thank you for all your time and effort you
place into this list.
I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that your name is one of several that
prompt one to pause and fully read your posts.

I wonder if you might clarify for me your example (copied below) of NWA
numbering, as this is a very exciting topic. Could one assume a stone
with an NWA number that has no “extension”, might be an example of a
dealer's “best guess”, as it would not reflect a “certified” number?

When a new find is made, would each stone be tested and given a
“certified” incremental “extension” number?

Best wishes,
Mike

[meteorite-list] Fireballs and Electrophonic sounds

2003-12-12 Thread Michael Gallant
Hello List,

If you don't have a copy of "The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Meteorites"
by O. Richard Norton, I strongly suggest putting it on your Christmas
wish list, you won't regret it. The second chapter describes the
fireball phenomena and mentions Electrophonic sounds.

Living in central New Hampshire, I can recall back in the late 60's (and
no, I wasn't high... at the time) hearing quite a loud sizzling /
crackling noise as I was standing near a utility pole one late summer
afternoon. My first reaction was to look for an arc over on an insulator
but instead I witnessed a very large, bright yellow green fireball about
20 degrees from the horizon moving from West to East. No sonic booms
and no smoke / debris trail that I can remember. I guesstimate 12 to 18
seconds of horizontal flight, then the noise and fireball disappeared at
the same time. I now understand why I was able to watch and hear the
fireball simultaneously ... Electrophonic sounds... radio waves
converted into sound via the wires / utility pole, thank you Mr. Norton.

I'm guessing but think this was a sizable mass at quite some distance
that just skipped in then out. Over Boston maybe??? Have done some
research but with little luck. Any "old people" ( high or not, I'm not
particular) out there remember such an event? Point me towards a data
base?

Best wishes to all,
Mike Gallant

[meteorite-list] Source for low cost chemicals

2003-10-15 Thread Michael Gallant
Hello Folks,

In the search for a reliable source for low cost chemicals (besides the
University five finger discount program) I came across an outfit called
Hagenow Laboratories, Inc. in the fine state of Wisconsin. While all
orders I placed with them over the years were accurately filled, they
seemed to be a tad slow in keeping with current communication
technology.

That has changed... somewhat. They are now known as Elemental
Scientific, LL and have a web site with a pdf catalog. Great source for
small quantity, low cost chemicals including Nitric acid,
Dimethylglyoxime (nickel test), Ferric chloride as well as many other
chemicals and general chem lab supplies.

Hope this link is helpful.

[meteorite-list] Makeshift membrane box

2003-10-14 Thread Michael Gallant
Hello List,
What I am about to suggest does not have all of the positive attributes
of a true HQ membrane case, such as the one offered by Ron Hartman and
in no way should it be considered an equal substitute.

This idea is for those, like me, that are in need of temporary
protection (from the likes of the dreaded Count Vac-u-lar !) for our
precious micromounts and fragments.

To enjoy viewing a specimen without removing it from the case, obtain a
crystal clear acrylic1x1or 2x2 box. Gently stretch an over size piece of
plastic food wrap across the bottom half of the case. Hold the wrap
taunt and position the specimen. Align and press on the lid. The plastic
wrap should stretch and pull the specimen tightly to the inside of the
lid. Use a sharp to cut away the excess wrap. That's it !

I hope someone will find this helpful.

Best wishes to all,
Mike Gallant IMCA 7583

[meteorite-list] RE: Pads for 2"x2" boxes

2003-10-14 Thread Michael Gallant
Hello List,
I had the pleasure of helping out a sweet lady, Anne Black, with her
need for a padded 2x2 specimen box. We, (my daughter and I) built a
quickie fixture to fabricate a two piece pad. The base layer is a 1/2"
thick white foam topped with a white 1/16" thick felt. I think, similar
to the pad supplied with the 1x1 specimen box that Walter Branch offers.

I do have several left-overs from this effort so if you send along your
mailing address, I'll get a couple of samples to you. At this point, I
have no plans for "real" production, as this effort is somewhat labor
(cost) heavy now. If there is sufficient interest, I'll look into a
cutter making the pad cost a bit more palatable.

Best wishes to all,
Mike Gallant, IMCA 7583

[meteorite-list] Re: Pardon me, dude

2003-10-12 Thread Michael Gallant
Hello Members,

As one of the (I think many) silent members, I find this fighting and
name calling appalling behavior. The only positive it seems to bring is
to reaffirm, for me anyway, dealers that I would want to steer clear of.
If others share my view, I would think a reduction in business for these
folk might be felt, and rightfully so, in my opinion.

I can also see how this might effect new members. Not a real welcome
wagon approach to such an excellent hobby.

I did share this view posted to [meteoritecollectorsassociation] Re:
Dealer, Collector Behavior
and got several private E mails similar to this:

"As another silent member, I wanted to let you know that I share your
view. Thank you for your words of sanity. I was about to cancel the
list, but now I'll wait to see if it becomes more worthwhile. Best,
"

Thank you for this forum and allowing me to share my opinion.

Best wishes,
Mike Gallant

Hello List,

Mark's advise is a good one.
"Also bear in mind that used up 'wet' silica Gel in an

dry out giving off water vapor) so recharge it regularly!!.
