[meteorite-list] AD:SIX HUGE SEYMCHAN SLICES !!!!! 1.8 FOOT LONG !

2007-04-11 Thread Michel FRANCO
Dear list,

I have just received the visit of a Russian friend that brought with him 6
top huge slices of Seymchan.

weight:

2164 g size 399 mm * 151 mm
1836 g size 478 mm * 163 mm
3566 g size 525 mm * 171 mm
4018 g size 537 mm * 181 mm
2984 g size 565 mm * 204 mm
3040 g size 563 mm * 199 mm

Thickness varies from 3.5 mm to 10 mm. Very fine polishing and etching.

These slices present uncommon chromite cristals, and extraordinary
Widmanstatten figures. they deserve a look, at least!

They will be the master center piece of any serious collection. Size average
is more than a foot and a half !

Please have a look at http://www.caillou-noir.com/HUGE%20Seymchan.htm

Serious offers will be considered. please email at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

First pay first serve.

See my site for detailed infos about these rare slices.

Best regards.

Re: [meteorite-list] Katol classification and Sahara 03500 + Sahara 03505

2013-03-24 Thread Michel FRANCO
Hello Bernd and James, and List.

I have decided last month to come back to meteorites, pure coincidence! I have
spent my last 5 years in photovoltaïcs. Photons and meteorites both fall from
the sky, I do not feel having changed too much of activity!!

Back to James's question.

Sahara 03500 is still in my collection, one complete slice, the main mass and
it should be examined in conjunction with " sister meteorite" Sahara 03505
which is pure sulfide iron of same composition as the 03500 sulfide iron clasts
of Sahara 03500. And no relicts chondrules in Sahara 03500, so far.
( I have not said that these 2 meteorites are paired !!! but in my eyes these 2
meteorites come from same parent object, at least visually, they were found not
far in the Sahara, and the only other iron sulfide are Antarctic meteorites.)

I did not find record of Katol fall in Met bull. ( Bernd help needed as usual
!!!)

Some more about Sahara 03500 aka Tassa Mahchi,

http://www.caillou-noir.com/TassaMahchi.htm and please click on the Clermont
university link on that page.

I will try to post better picts on that site when I open my meteorite storage
at home.

Have a good week end.

Best regards.

Hi everyone,

I was browsing David Weir's meteorite pages when I came upon the page for
Sahara 03500, a primitive achondrite. While none of the photos I could find of
this meteorite were very high-quality, it seems to me that this is the same
kind of material as the Katol, India fall from May of last year. Any thoughts
on this?

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn24753-rare-space-rock-goes-unnoticed-for-140-years.html#.UqtQ4XgazCQ

16:08 13 December 2013 by Govert Schilling

A rare meteorite that formed soon after the origin of the solar system has been
discovered in a private geological collection – 140 years after it fell to
Earth. The stone, which is around 4.6 billion years old, was officially handed
over to Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, the Netherlands, earlier this
week.

Bright lights and sizzling sounds accompanied the fall of the meteorite on 27
October 1873 in the village of Diepenveen in the Netherlands, according to a
contemporary handwritten note. Two witnesses to the fall dug up the small, warm
stone and gave it to the local schoolmaster. It remained a school specimen
until 2009, when it was given to a collector. Dutch amateur astronomer Henk
Nieuwenhuis then "rediscovered" the 5-centimetre-wide space rock when he
examined the collection last year.

"It is very unusual for a space rock to remain unnoticed by astronomers and
geologists for such a long time," says Leo Kriegsman, a geologist at the
Naturalis Biodiversity Center.

The Diepenveen, as the meteorite is now officially called, is only the fifth to
have fallen in the Netherlands as far as we know. The find is all the more
remarkable because the meteorite turns out to be of a very rare, carbon-rich
type known as a CM carbonaceous chondrite – the same type as the one that
triggered a meteorite hunt when it fell to Earth in California last year.

"CMs comprise less than 1 per cent of all known meteorites," says geologist
Marco Langbroek of the Free University in Amsterdam, where the Diepenveen
underwent its first analysis.

CM carbonaceous chondrites contain up to 2 per cent carbon, often in the form
of microscopic diamonds. They also contain organic matter like amino acids,
which some researchers believe brought the building blocks of life to Earth.

"It is very interesting news," says meteorite researcher Peter Brown of the
University of Western Ontario in London, Canada. "CM meteorite falls are indeed
rare. If the meteorite has been stored well and not subjected to too much
terrestrial contamination it could be quite interesting."

However, fellow meteorite researcher Michael Zolensky of NASA's Johnson Space
Center in Houston, Texas, is more cautious. "It will be thoroughly contaminated
in any case, so only results for non-terrestrially occurring amino acids may be
believable," he says.

Tiny samples of the brittle and porous meteorite are now being studied at
laboratories in California, New Mexico and Switzerland. "We hope to publish our
analysis results sometime next year," says Langbroek.

I wouldn't be concerned about moving down a point. PageRank is not really a
priority anymore and updates only come once or twice a year.
Matt Cutts of Google said the following on Twitter on the 16th.

"it's not unusual to see PR shift up or down slightly, due to recalibration
+ it's possible that sites are right on a borderline."

PageRank is only a small part of what Google uses to determine rankings in
their search results. I just did a top 10 report for "meteorites for sale"
(the results can be seen in the image link below). The second column from
the right shows PageRank and has values from 1 to 5 which do NOT correlate
with the search rankings. This is the way PR has been behaving for years.

Happy Webmastering!

Paul

Hi Jim,

The electron microprobe is the workhorse for classifications, and most of
this can be done simply with a probe mount (epoxy mounted sample that has
been polished). In general you don't need a thin section or a petrographic
microscope, although I always use a reflected light petrographic microscope
for reconnaissance of the probe mount before it goes on the electron probe.
The electron microprobe produces quantitative data that is usually necessary
for detailed, high quality classification of chondrites and achondrites. For
example the chemical compositions of fine grained olivines, pyroxenes,
feldspars, etc.
(which are diagnostic for classification) can really only be done with high
precision by the electron microprobe.

On the other hand, a polished thin section is nice because it can be both
microprobed and be used for optical examination. There are some useful
things you can do with transmitted light microscopy, such as describe shock
effects and weathering and other optical subtleties that will not be easy to
see with backscatter electrons. A lot of this type of detail though is not
really needed for a classification. It gets into the realm of a research
project, where you might also want TEM or age dating or cosmic ray exposure
and so on -- the list of instruments is very long...

Thin sections are more work to make than probe mounts. For iron meteorites
usually a probe mount is all you need, because all you will be doing is
looking at or analyzing the surface. And for irons, bulk chemical analyses
are usually done for classification, which is not usually the case for
chondrites and achondrites -- although for lunars INAA is great for grouping
the breccias.

Hi listoids,

No fall on April 2009registred in Met Bull, i.e. it's a new fall
17 Million £ per kilo not bad. That's around 20 000 $ per gram.
I love big figures, this one is a bit expensive for my budget, sorry for the
seller, I'll keep my cash for more weathered stones ;-), falls are really
out of reach this 2014!

How much would you pay for this?
What about if we told you it's 4.6 billion years old - about as ancient as
the Earth and came from space?
That would probably bump the price up a little. But still not quite as high
as the owners want for it...

The fist-sized meteorite is priced at 80 million Yuan (or about £8 million)
in a meteorite shop in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang
Autonomous Region.
Pictured by Rex News, the 434g meteorite was seen falling from the sky on
April 12th, 2009.
Villagers arrived at the landing spot and recovered it, which turned out to
be a good idea. According to Zhang Baolin, an expert at Beijing Planetarium,
it's about the same age as the Earth and is worth millions to the right
buyer.

Re: [meteorite-list] Tatahouine - Pronunciation

2003-03-03 Thread Michel Franco
Hi list,

Thanks Robert,

I think one should say:

"ta" "ta" "ween"

"ta" as in "cat", twice.

"ween" as in between.

The "tu" pronunciation is a Spilberg idea, not a tunisian one. Not far from
Tataouine, one can visit the site where was shot the movie that made this
city more famous than the Diogenite.

Tataouine is the correct spelling from the name of this Tunisian city. I
should find a photo of the road marks with this spelling in my files. I will
put that on my site one day.

A easy trip but today all fragments are gone unless you look for smaller
than 0.01 g. The 3 impact crater are still there, pretty empty. An old 1931
map facilitates their discovery.

Best day

Every is almost the correct word.
Almost is the correct word.

When I hunt with my mates, I do not use a magnet. Some of them does even if
I ask not to use magnets. Only the more experienced do not use magnet; it is
just a matter of time.

Just a short story, from the field: we encountered a strewn field, obviously
of the same fall. Some of us used magnets on their first finds. After a
short brief, they put the magnets in thier pockets. The crust colour and
regmaglypts more or less marked on the bigger individuals made them
confident in the cosmicity of the rocks they where gatering.

But then I have no control on magnetic fields during transportation. Packed
in metallic travel cases and air shipped from Africa to Europe.

We shoudl talke about it.

My two cents, ( hey Euro has cents too !)

Best regards

Michel.

[meteorite-list] Ebay CROOKERY and Ebay Crook

2003-06-05 Thread Michel Franco
Dear list

I want to inform all the list members that a crook tempted to be paid in my
place for an unsold item.

I have been informed by a german customer that someone was tempting to sell
directly an unsold ebay item from my last listing. My customer send me some
emails he exchanged with the supposed owner of my piece. ( A 4558 g
individual still in on my desk.)

The winner was masupeti with an Ebay rating of 8. I send to him the usual
ebay invoice including S&H. But did not get any payment.

In the mean while the crook tried to have my german customer ( third higher
bidder ) paying him a discussed amount.

The guy says that is name is ALEXANDER FOFANOV.

He uses my ebay ID as his email adress ( which is not mine) .
He proposed my customer to pay directly his bank in Estonia with the
following info.

Beneficiary: ALEXANDER FOFANOV
Beneficiary's bank: PK 19, Tallinn, ES-10502, Estonia
Beneficiary's account # 334158180001
Beneficiary's bank SWIFT: FORE EE 2X
Beneficiary address: 12/4 Main, Chamonix Haute Savoie,
France

It is the first time such thing happens to me. I wander if other members of
this list know this ALEXANDER FOFANOV and if they have dealed with him.

I will give notice to ebay of this crookery.

[meteorite-list] White stone !

2003-06-17 Thread Michel Franco
Dear List

It happened that I found a strange white stone. I cut it into several slices
and found inside an usual chondritic texture and that it looks very fresh,
but has no crust , no crust at all, and it is not weathered. Even on the
ground facing side I found no relict of any crust. This meteorite is not too
much sand blasted as other finds in the same field are. A starnage object.

A slice and a fragment were send to Michele Bourot Denise at Museum
d'Histoire Naturelle de Paris. it is a fresh LL6 W0/1 S2 ! confirming it is
a meteorite .

Further analyzes are planned. It is very poor in metal and is at the limit
of the LL class, but not yet a R chondrite.

You can see photos of that amazing stone on the following page.

http://www.caillou-noir.com/swa03008.html

I wander if any other fresh chondrite with no crust were found.

[meteorite-list] I am a DEALER AND not PSEUDO JUDGING

2003-07-04 Thread Michel Franco
Dear List

I started in gathering meteorites from the ground in 1997 in libya.
I had them analyzed, I made a web site for education, wrote a book about my
expeditions and first hunts, wrote articles for different magazines (
Meteorites ! twice and many in general press in France), gave lectures, went
to some meteorites shows, sold little, ran prospecting expeditions in 5
different saharan countries. I am working on a new web site with my best
finds. (The old one is a bit obsolete I confess. but still presents some
meteorites you will not find eslse where).
I personnaly fund all of it.

Last year I went professionnal: I created a commercial company Caillou Noir
specialized in trading the meteorites I find: I am legally allowed to sell
meteorites world wide. I have been granted a business registration ID#. I
also gained the obligation to pay taxes on this business. I feel am
profesionnal dealer.

FYI, my 2 shock veined sulfurs: http://www.caillou-noir.com/LTJ.htm

Re: [meteorite-list] Tatahouine_strewnfield

2003-07-17 Thread Michel Franco
Steve

As I said before to PM PELE, the strewn field has been conscienciously
searched by Carion, in 1992 and after. I passed throught that field in 1999
and and picked up some needle head fragments The locals are aware of the
Diogenite now and have searched a very large area around the strew field. I
do not think that there is much left . Plus any foreigner seen in the area
is immediately reported to the local authorities who protect the zone from
further plundering. Only the goat and sheep keppers can walk the zone
without being disturbed.

If you want some of the stuff, the best is to ask the locals and buy it, at
market prices. Tataouine is connected to internet and all know the value of
this diogenite.

The cratrers were still marked in 1999.

best regards

Michel.

[meteorite-list] End Cut Nomenclature et al.

2003-07-23 Thread Michel Franco
Dear list,

We all use many terms to describe our beloved meteorites. As I am working on
a new website, I was wondering if there is a kind of Nomenclature/rule for
the terms below:

End cut: is there a minimal weight/size for it ?

Slice, partial slice, full slice: a meteorite is often broken on landing,
when one slices it the result is a complete slice of the meteorite which
lacks FC on the broken side: shall we name it part slice, slice or full
slice of the said meteorite ?

Fragment: is there a relation between the absolute size of it or is it
related to the TKW of the meteorite. What is the maximunm weght of a
fragment ( if it exists )

Additional masses: Some meteorites, such as Tatahouine or Sikhote Alin for
instance, have a declared TKW which is now obsolete. Many additional masses
were found in the ninety's for Tatahouine and today for Sikhote Alin. I
wander if there is a rule for additional masses of falls. Anyone going on a
reknown strewn field can - more or less easily -find some more meteorite. I
would like to know if a report made the Met Soc will change the TKW even if
no analyse is made of the newly discovered additionnal mass of the 'old'
meteorite.

A summer light topic.

Best regards from the sunny Alps.

RE: [meteorite-list] Pluto is Now Just a Number: 134340

2006-09-13 Thread Michel FRANCO
Hi Ron, Sterling and list

TKS for your analysis and comments.

Shall we understand that there not any more asteroïds in the cosmos ? but
SSSB & Dwarf Planets!

In lecture about our beloved meteorites shall I introduce SSSB and Dwarf
Planet to the audience.

As non member of the IAU and member of the Met Soc, I'll wait to have our
society comments. And keep on with "asteroïds orbiting between Mars and
Jupiter orbits." Yes there are some others Amor Athen, etc. but let's make
it easy for the public.

A recent poll in France showed that one third of the population was
believing that the Sun was orbiting Earth! No comments.

Best regards.

Objet : Re: [meteorite-list] Pluto is Now Just a Number: 134340

Hi,

Nice headline: Pluto is now just a number.

I'd imagine The Planet Pluto is feeling a little
blue about now. (Anybody checked its UVB
magnitude lately?) Having the blues usually calls
for a song. Here it is. (Adapted from "Secret
Agent Man," by P.F. Sloan and S. Barri, 1966.)

PLANET PLUTO MAN

There's a world that leads a life of danger;
To the inner system it stays a stranger.
With every move they make,
Another chance you take;
Odds are you won't be a planet any longer.

Planet Pluto Man, Xena, Ceres, too:
They've given you a number
And taken away your name.

Beware of IAU'ers that you find;
Bad science hides an evil mind.
Ah, be careful what you do
Or they'll get rid of you;
Odds are you won't be a planet any longer.

Planet Pluto Man, Xena, Ceres, too:
They've given you a number
And taken away your name.

Meanwhile, what is this "Minor Planet Center"?
There is no such thing as a "minor planet." That
old term was submerged and terminated by IAU
Resolution 5A. I quote item (3) All other objects
[footnote 3] orbiting the Sun shall be referred to
collectively as "Small Solar System Bodies" and
[footnote 3] These currently include most of the
Solar System asteroids, most Trans-Neptunian
Objects (TNOs), comets, and other small bodies.
(Notice the "most"?)

Since there's no such thing as a "minor planet,"
doesn't Brian have to change the name of his fine
recording organization first, to "The Small Solar
System Body Center"? Of course, the old name
has a long and honorable history. On the other
hand, that argument didn't cut much ice for the
Planet Pluto.

Additionally, the IAU passed Resolution 6A,
which states "The IAU further resolves: PLUTO
IS A DWARF PLANET by the above definition
and is recognized as the prototype of a new category
of trans-Neptunian objects." Not AS an TNO, but
as a prototype for more trans-Neptunian dwarf planets.
TNO's are SSSB's, unless they're Dwarf Planets,
in which case they are NOT SSSB's.

Obviously, Pluto is classified as a "dwarf
planet," NOT a small solar system body (nor
minor planet, of which there are none). Marsden's
saying that Pluto can be included in "other"
catalogs is disingenuous. Pluto (by Resolution
6A) has already been designated as a Dwarf
Planet and, as such, has been excluded from
the Small Solar System Body category (and
catalog), and listing Pluto as such is flatly
contradictory to and violates Resolution 5A.
To do so is just unprofessional conduct.

Resolution 5A's [footnote 2] says "An IAU
process will be established to assign BORDERLINE
objects into either dwarf planet and other categories."
But the subsequent Resolution 6A (which followed
5A and further refines it) assigns Pluto to Dwarf
Planet status, specifically and by name (not number).

Resolution 5A creates THREE SEPARATE
AND DISTINCT categories of solar system bodies:
PLANETS, DWARF PLANETS, and SMALL
SOLAR SYSTEM BODIES (hereinafter abbreviated
as SSSB). Despite the more than evident desire
of many parties to have only two categories: Eight
Planets and Space Junk, that is NOT what Resolution
5A does. What it does do is to define THREE
classifications on a totally EQUAL footing. The
previous drafts of the resolution ennumerated
two Dwarf Planets under the criteria of Resolution
5A: Pluto and Ceres (and, as a double planet,
Charon too, but Charon is out now).

Originally, the term "dwarf planet" was
proposed as "merely" descriptive, or so said
the FAQ issued by the IAU at the time of the
first version of Resolution 5. However, the
resolution that actually passed (5A) makes
Dwarf Planet a technical classification and
a solar system body category completely
independent of and distinct from either
Planet and SSSB, a definition of

received my 150 gram fragment and it looks a little like a piece of
CORNBREAD.My piece has a small cut window and shows alot of metal.I am
surprised by the L class.Oh well I did not classified it so it is a very
fine specimen to me.And the price was just right. Thanks to adam hupe for

Me and Alain Carion are proud to announce the
existence of a "new" french meteorite.

The meteorite of Saint-Ouen-en-Champagne fell
September 29, 1799 near Le Mans (west of France). A
farmer saw a stone falling in front of him while he
was collecting grain. The stone was certainly broken
apart. It weighed about 4.6 kilograms but most of it
was forever lost. Alain Carion found a 12 grams
fragment in the J. Chadel collection he bought in
november 2006 and another piece of 40 grams was kept
in the Musee Vert of Le Mans where we met the curator
last week. Only two rare articles spoke of this fall
(in 1841 and 1881) ; that's the reason why its
existence was confidential.

It's an ordinary chondrite and it's still under
classification at the MNHN, Paris.

Alain Carion will show you its 12 grams fragment of
the Saint-Ouen-en-Champagne meteorite in Tucson (Inn
Suite, room 123) during the Show.

WHERE HUNTING was [meteorite-list] Meteorite Hunters Released from Oman

2005-05-13 Thread michel FRANCO
Dear Adam and list

TKS for the good news.

This past event makes me think more about meteorite hunting in deserts (
Sahara, Arabic peninsula, etc...)

I think it will be great to have the exact knowledge of the different
laws ruling our known hunting places, and other potentially rich in
meteorites countries. I am think of Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mali,
Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Tunesia, Western Sahara.

I only know that Algeria forbids prospecting for meteorites inside its
borders.
I have heard that it is the same in Tunesia.

RE : [meteorite-list] NWA 869

2005-06-14 Thread michel FRANCO
Hi list, Hello Jeff,

Interesting topic.

I am the one that had 410 kg classified as Sahara 02500. L3.8 etc...
I have the coordinates of the 64 first individuals found. ( And I have
drawn the ellipse of the fall. For many reasons I choose not to disclose
the coordinates.) The people working for me searched and found more, on
the field 3 times. We gave to the Nom Com a full report of our work. It
was partially published.

On the same field we recovered also other meteorites. It is almost very
easy to visually identify it from other meteorites. When I have doubt I
used a SM30 to mesure the magnetic susceptibility of the specimen. It' s
a good cross check, not an anlayse. I will not be surprised that other
teams went on the field to recover more, as we had no exclusivity of any
search in the Sahara. It could be what is commonly called 869. From
what I have seen in different shows, Sahara 02500 and 869 look pretty
similar. I don't know, as I never tested a 869 specimen with the SM 30,
nor had any accurate location for the 869. I will argue that i am not
interested in trying a pairing with meteorites that I have not
recovered, knowing all sorts of discussion about pairing that we had on
this list and elsewhere too.

I discussed that with Ted Bunch in Tucson. He made a compementary study
on some big inclusions that are commonly found in this meteorite and he
was surprized that he could not publish it because 869 has never been
published! He should have made his work from my samples ! We had a good
laugh. About these inclusions, some are chondritic, some achondritic,
but it very rare to find achondritic material in it, according what I
know today.

Today, I am 55, and I am retired of these salvage huntings, which will
be called plundering in some years. Since 2001, things moved a lot and
I will not prospect without a permit anywhere in the Sahara. I am not
ready to experience the Omanese jails, nor any other Saharan jail.

Today, I say also that it is difficult, if not impossible, to export
meteorites from the Sahara with all legal documentation. When I say
meteorites I say meteorites not minerals, of course.

My 2 cents.

[meteorite-list] Taza and caliche

2006-04-10 Thread Michel FRANCO
Dear list

I have received some Taza today. I like it, its a an interesting meteorite
although not a fall. Quite rare to have a iron find with many many small
individuals.
But my purpose is not speaking about this meteorite, we could spend hours on
it.

Some individuals that I have received are covered with some rust, ( I
removed it with a gentle air blasting with vegetal abrasive ( bio !) ) and
with a white crusted depostit which I suspect to be caliche and that resists
to my vegetal abrasive sanding.

My request:
As anyone on the list a way to clean this crusted deposit on Taza's.

RE: [meteorite-list] Morocco Meteorite Meeting

2006-06-30 Thread Michel FRANCO
Hi all,

Algeria has forbidden meteorite exportation some years ago. ( meteorite as
well as any rock sample, even sand, all artefacts, etc...)
Permit to export these items through the broders is not easy to have! For
scientific purposes it works, for commercial purpose no.
Lecture were given to custom officers, police and gendarmerie ( kind of MP)
by Algiers university professors in 2004.

my 2 cents

from what i understand this is because of illegal boarder crossings, not
because the authorities care about some stones...

if stones were comming into morroco from other nations and their export is
made illegal they will just travel to another state where the export laws
are more lax.

FYI name !!! Re: [meteorite-list] eBay - Auctions ending soon from POLANDMET

2003-10-14 Thread Michel Franco
Dear list

I sold the stone to Marcin under the tempory name SWA 01003.

He asked me what could be the definte name. I said to him that I was in
discussion to have it named SAXXYYY but this name is not adopted yet by the
Nom Com.

I made the remark to him some months ago and he starts again to change name
and make it look like an adopted name which is not.

I do not play this game.

I do not want to add confusion.

Re: FYI name !!! Re: [meteorite-list] eBay - Auctions ending soon from POLANDMET

2003-10-14 Thread Michel Franco
Bill,

First point: the meteoriet is classified: it is a L3.8

your question certainly about official publication by tye Nomenclature
Committee.

I have no action nor influence on the Nom Com.

I had plenty of discussions with Jutta Zipfel and Luigi Folco. Who are both
in harge of the NWA 's ( Jutta ) and Sahara 's ( Luigi) .

I have no idea of any timing for the descision they will take.

My point is that I do not buy my meteorites in Morocco. They do not enter in
the NWA category. I have a team working for me in the Sahara and I do not
wish to disclose where. They shoudl be named Sahara as the one the Labenne
discovered.

FYI

Re: [meteorite-list] Sedimentary Meteorite?

2003-12-03 Thread Michel Franco
Hello list

I went 2 year ago in front a similar rock. It is covered with a nice desert
varnish that really looks like a meteorite crust. It can make any meteorite
hunter sceptical. It is not a meteorite at all. Mine was a metemorphic rock
with magnetite. Dean's looks very similar, but nobody can expertize any
meteorite on photos. Only few exceptions.

[meteorite-list] Lets' introduce Caillou Noir and about meteorite naming.

2003-12-04 Thread Michel Franco
Dear list,

Some of you may know me. The new members may not. I wish to shortly (re-)
introduce myself.

I live in France and have been travelling and working as an engineer in the
Sahara in the 70's and in the 80's.

I started meteorite hunting in 1997 and succefully found about a hundred of
them. They were sent to European labs and have been analyszed and published
in differents Met Bull. Together with Francoise, my wife , ( she is an
author ) we had many press articles published in European medias and also in
Meteorite Magazine. She wrote abook ( unfortunatly in French) about our
adventures in the Sahara "Chasseurs de Meteorites", Cherche Midi Editor
Paris .

When the NWA rush happened, I started to create my own prospecting network
with nomads, not in Morocco where apparently many meteorite dealers were
having good times.
I spend many expeditions on the field with "my" group. They learned well and
are now good and efficient prospectors. I supplied GPS to them. It allows me
to go back where an interesting find was made. And it works.

In 2001 this team recovered many meteorites and till that date they still
provide me with large amount of meteorites. Having sorted out all
importation and transportation probems, in 2002, I went professionnal in the
way that I registred a business company " Caillou Noir " ( say "kayunwar" )
in France. ( A Caillou Noir is a Black Stone ) It mainly allows me buy and
sell meteorites, but also to pay taxes on my meteorite business ! fair
enougfh ! France is like that we have good social laws regarding health
care .It is a cool country to live. And Sahara is not far ! 2 jet hours for
Algeria, 5 hours to subsaharan countries. A lot of them.

But let's come back to the meteorites I ( with my team) find.

At the beginning, I named them SWA yyxxx ( standing for Some Where in the
Sahara !) xx is a year and xxx my own serial number. I do not wish to
disclose where my team works for evidentv reasons. I have invested some tens
of thousands of euros ( 1 is $ 1.2 today) in raising this prospecting
network.

Now I have decided that I will name the " Caillou Noir meteorites" after
thier local names. That is why you will discover new names on my ebay
listings.

Tioualoualene is a CV3 it was my SWA 02003 # ,TKW 741 g
Techouen is a CO3 it was my SWA 02005, TKW 79 g
Ti Hedjirine ( a recristallized eucrite ) was my SWA 02007. TKW 3960 g
Ain Beida is a LL6 with no crust just a light grey stone, look on my site,
it deserves the visit.
More will come soon.

You can find my meteorites on www.caillou-noir.com This site should look
more professionnal soon. But this will not change the nature of the
meteorites I offer for sale !

Thanks for having read this message.

Best regards.

2003-12-11 Thread Michel Franco

Michael, Jim, Matteo, list,

This is an interesting thread.

I think it should be developped. And I have
questions for experts like you guys.
A: Does the presence of some flow lines is enough
to say that a meteorite is oriented ?
B. Does a meteorite with conical shape ( approx
similar to Bob Haag Venus cone ) but without any crust ( due to a long stay on
earth surface before find) can be said oriented .
C:   When thumbprints  have a
particular elliptical shape  with a depressed side and a rim on the other
side, is it a sign of orientation.?

  Subject: [meteorite-list] Note on
  meteorite descriptions

I would like to note that people need to learn a
little about how to describe their meteorites. I have been perusing ebay, and
I note so many flawed descriptions.
People are either 1, trying to deceive, or 2,
just clueless about what they have.

For instance, Steve Arnold list a piece of Orissa
that broke off of his larger piece, then calling it a "complete individual".
People, this is a fragment, NOT an individual. An individual is a
complete piece, or almost complete, where you can see it was completely
covered in fusion crust, or if broken, you can see that it is nearly complete,
not a broken off fragment from a much larger piece. Casper used to pull the same crap, describing complete
individuals then selling you fragments with a scrap of crust.

Another problem I see alot is "oriented".

Most of the stones I see on ebay described as
oriented never were, nor even begin to look oriented. To be oriented, it needs
to clearly show that it maintained a particular flight orientation, and in
doing so will show flow lines in one direction, usually the backside is flat
and lipped. Some of the boxy pieces that I see as oriented on ebay could not
  be further from the truth.
We need to clear this up and jump on these people
who take liberty to trump up the pieces they are selling with false claims.

  My opinion on your points...

A -  I would term the mere presence of flow lines as saying that the
meteorite was "flight marked" but not necessarily Oriented.

B - I don't think that the absence of fusion crust would mean that a
specimen could not be Oriented.  An example would be the famous "King of
Irons" Gibeon.  In my opinion, Orientation refers to shape also.

C- Yes, I believe that the elongation of regmaglypts is a sign of
possible orientation.  When this is combined with a flat bottom with a
roll over rim the signs of Orientation are even more convincing.

I think the real test of orientation is when you can look at the piece
and actually visualize the direction of flight.  I have seen many photos
on ebay described as oriented where I ask myself - "Oriented in what
  direction?"

Orientation should be obvious to the casual observer or the term "flight
  marked" should be used.

Michael, Jim, Matteo, list,

This is an interesting thread.

I think it should be developped. And I
have questions for experts like you guys.
A: Does the presence of some flow lines is
enough to say that a meteorite is oriented ?
B. Does a meteorite with conical shape ( approx
similar to Bob Haag Venus cone ) but without any crust ( due to a long stay
on earth surface before find) can be said oriented .
C:   When thumbprints  have a
particular elliptical shape  with a depressed side and a rim on the
other side, is it a sign of orientation.?

[meteorite-list] Caliche removal technique wanted !

I wander if there is a micraculous technique to eliminate calice from
meteorites.
I have noticed that calice protects well the crust but it is always hard to

Sorry Chtristian and Peter,

I did not read the message related to Ebay. I
was very pissed off by many non meteorite related messages that I almost stop
reading all.

I understand that there should not be any
annoucement of Ebay Sales on this list.

Just 2 questions:
Is it in the list policy ?
STeve is probably right. Some times ago I
understood that we shoud clearly write ADD ebay on the object so anyone can
automatically skip off the messages with the Outlook ( or other ) t messages
tools

Where should I send my ebay sales adds ? Personnaly
I don't care send messages to other lists.

Sorry again.

BTW I have 23 auctions ending in a couple of hours
!

  Hello list,
I like to find all ebay and all other AD's on this very list.
Somtimes items are sold within a few minutes and I  don't like to

thanks to AD's on this list. For some items I was - unfortunately - too late

PS.: I think that Meteorite AD's are much more meteorite related than a lot

Dear all,

Just to make the thing progress a bit,

Would any of the Ten Group tell us if they saw a significative change in
their auctions since they did not AD on the Met List ?

I feel happy to comply with any rules, when it is clear and official.

Perhaps Art can help us to sort out this tread.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Puzzle

2004-01-15 Thread Michel Franco
If you wish to be able to "de-glue" them later, you can use the wax which is
used for thin sections; You will find waxes that melt at 60 °C .

Put your meteorites in an owen at 65 ° C. When they are in hot in mass,
Put wax fragments between pieces and make it tight. When cooled down, you
will have anice meteorite. Most waxes solves in Alcohol or similar non
damageable liquid for meteorites. Wax seller will give you the name of the
right liquid.
65 ° C will not affect you ordinary meteorites.
