Hi List,

Well said Graham. I feel the same way. I think it's pretty obvious
when viewing offers from overseas wholesalers and hunters, which ones
are legit. Abdelfattah is known to many members on this List, and so
are many other Moroccan dealers and wholesalers. In fact, the legit
Moroccan wholesalers have probably handled many more meteorites and
meteorwrongs than most Western collectors or dealers. A experienced
eye can spot features that may hint at what the petrologic type is. I
think almost anyone can look at a highly-equilibrated chondrite and
tell that it's a type 5, L or H. Plentiful chondrules showing through
the matrix or outer surface hints at a type 3. Glossy, slick crust -
probably an achondrite.

How many times has a collector or dealer bought a stone at an
unclassified chondrite price, only to win the "Moroccan Lottery" and
score a planetary or other rare type. It's part of the game and the
market, although it happens less frequently now because the hunters
and wholesalers are more savvy now and can spot promising meteorites
that may be a rare type.

Self-pairing is rampant in the meteorite world. How much of the TONS
of NWA 869 on the market has been classified? How about those little
Nantan and Campo "crystals"? Are those analyzed by a lab? I could
point out a respected dealer right now who is self-pairing everything
from OC's to planetaries. I won't do it, because he's one of the most
reliable and nicest dealers around. And, I respect his judgement.
Apparently there is no problem with it, because nobody ever brings it
up and he's a long-time member of the IMCA.

The enforcement of the unspoken rule against self-pairing is arbitrary
and mean-spirited at times. If we are going to drag Abdelfattah
across the fire for offering a self-paired ureilite, then open the
floodgates and crucify everyone who is doing it. Half of the dealers
out there have self-paired at one time or another - maybe more than
that. I don't endorse that and I do not agree with that practice, but
it's a reality of the market and we turn a blind eye to some dealers
for doing it while we call out others in public. It's not
even-handed.

Blaine Reed is now enduring a crapstorm of revenge because he stood up
for the integrity of the market - frankly, that is something the IMCA
could have done. It shouldn't have been up to Blaine to go out on his
own dime and take up the cause of authenticity. Blaine now has an
enemy for life because of his stand against self-pairing or
self-classifications. Steve Curry got himself convicted of a criminal
charge for doing something that is not different than what many List
members do on a regular basis - they are just given a pass because
they are well-known to most collectors and the material they are
self-pairing is obvious unimportant meteorites like Campo and NWA 869.

All of this discussion and insults could have been avoided if either :
Abdelfattah had offered his stone as a "possible ureilite" or
"possible achondrite", but also made it clear that the stone is still
officially unclassified. Perhaps it was a language barrier at work
here. Or, if we had treated his offer like the hundreds or thousands
of others that are similar - here is my suspected meteorite, here are
some photos of it, and contact me if you want to buy it. Nothing to
get bent out of shape about.

If Abdelfattah stands behind his material, then there is no issue. If
he sells something as a ureilite, and it turns out to be something
else, then a good dealer will stand behind that deal and offer to buy
back the stone or send a refund. That is the nature of the business.
There is no need to insult the man for it.

I have seen some Moroccans on Facebook offering some obvious
meteorwrongs for sale as meteorites and they are quite pushy about it
sometimes. Abdelfattah is not one of those dealers. A measure of
good judgement and experience with the market comes into play here.
Newbies and people who haven't done their homework shouldn't be
purchasing specimens unseen from overseas sources. Period.

Best regards and الصيد سعيد,

MikeG

[meteorite-list] RENAMING OF NWA 5435 L4-5 (prov.) TO NWA 3999 (prov.) IN MET. BUL.

2013-07-08 Thread Norbert & Heike Kammel

Dear Friends and Custumers,

due to a typo at the Nom.Com. quite some confusion has arisen about the
NWA 5435.

This number was assigned to Ray Pickard for ROCKS ON FIRE by Dr.
Caroline Smith on 18-09-2008 as provisional number NWA 5435, but was
deleted from the database 3 Mar 2012 by J. Grossman with no explanation
mentioned to us and no replacement number offered at that time.

This problem has now been solved with the help of Jeff Grossman in a
swift way - Fabian Kunz keeps the (later) assigned number NWA 5435 for
his Brachinite, as it is already as official listed in the database, and
we agreed to change our listings for our L4-5 Chondrite to NWA 3999.

Thanks Jeff and all others involved, mistakes can happen.

So we now added the following information for our customers to our
website, and ask owners of our 'NWA 5435' now NWA 3999 to please contact
us so that we can issue a new label for their specimen:

NWA 3999 L4-5 (prov.) New Breccicated Chondrite, S2, W2

PLEASE NOTE: THIS METEORITE WAS PREVIOUSLY ADVERTISED AND SOLD BY US AS
NWA 5435 L4-5 (prov.). THIS LATE NAME CHANGE WAS REQUIRED AS THE NOM.
COM. OF THE METEORITICAL SOCIETY DID A TYPING MISTAKE IN THEIR DATABASE
WHEN THEY ISSUED A NEW NAME FOR A BRACHINITE BY USING OUR ASSIGNED NWA
5435 INSTEAD OF NWA6435.

OUR NUMBER WAS THEN DELETED WITHOUT OUR KNOWLEDGE, AND AFTER A FAIR BIT
OF CORRESPONDENCE AND GOOD WILL ON BOTH SIDES WE GOT NOW THIS NEW NUMBER
NWA 3999 ISSUED.

WE APOLOGISE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE CAUSED.

I hope that I have not caused more confusion and that the meteorite
finally gets official statement.

Re: [meteorite-list] Dry Lakes in Australia

2009-10-14 Thread Norbert & Heike Kammel

Hi Greg,

good luck with meteorite hunting here Down-Under. I have to mention our
stringent laws in this matter, but you may just find an odd looking 'rock'?

The dry lakes you notice on GoogleEarth nearly all of them are dry salt
lakes. You must be very lucky to find a just freshly fallen rock,
otherwise it would be crusted with salt crystals - not to recognize and
destroyed by the salt. That is just my bit of experience.
But there are surely some smaller clay pans, certainly worth to have a
look at.
May be you find a nice flanged button tektite? They are exempt from the
otherwise required export permit!

Anyway, have a nice time here in Australia.

The fall actually happened in 2007, Meteoritical Bulletin: MB 95

I heard of it in February this year.
The location is between Mundrabilla and Cook 001. Coordinates are 31°
21.0'S, 129° 11.4'E, that means 168.6 km east of Mundrabilla and 170.9

Unfortunately no fragments have been available for collectors.

http://www.smh.com.au/technology/sci-tech/rare-snapshot-of-solar-systems-dawn-20090918-fvcl.html

Rare snapshot of solar system's dawn
DEBORAH SMITH SCIENCE EDITOR
September 19, 2009

CAMERAS set up in outback Australia to track fireballs across the night sky have
led scientists to a rare meteorite formed at the dawn of the solar system.

The fiery streak it made on descent allowed them not only to pinpoint where it
would fall on the vast Nullarbor Plain, but also work out where it had come
from.

Three fragments of the meteorite, the biggest the size of a cricket ball, were
found within 100 metres of the predicted landing site, Alex Bevan, head of earth
and planetary science at the Western Australian Museum, said. ''That is
incredible accuracy.''

Dr Bevan said the Nullarbor desert was chosen for a new fireball observatory
because of its pale limestone colour. ''Most meteorites are dark so they
contrast well with the local rock.''

Dubbed Bunburra Rockhole after a nearby landmark, the meteorite was found on the
first day of searching by the international team, which includes researchers
from the Perth museum and CSIRO.

Meteorites are among the most studied rocks on Earth, the team leader, Philip
Bland, of the Imperial College in London, said. ''But it's really rare for us to
be able to tell where they came from.''

Based on its unusual basalt composition and trajectory, the researchers believe
the Nullarbor meteorite was once part of an asteroid in the innermost side of
the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, until a collision chipped it off
millions of years ago.

It then moved into an orbit around the sun similar to that of Earth, before
plummeting to the ground on July 20, 2007.

Weighing about 22 kilograms when it began its fiery descent at an altitude of 60
kilometres, only fragments of less than 200 grams were left when it hit.

''We're cautiously optimistic that this find could be the first of many, and if
that happens, each find may give us more clues about how the solar system
began,'' Dr Bland, whose team's study was published yesterday in the journal
Science, said.

Asteroids in the innermost belt are thought to have formed near the sun and
consist of the same material from which the earth was made.

The fireball observatory consists of a network of four cameras that take a
single time-lapse picture every night to track any shooting stars, and complex
mathematics is required to determine a meteorite's original orbit.

Re: [meteorite-list] Dealers, Sellers: Please INSURE your shipments

2009-06-01 Thread Norbert & Heike Kammel

Aloha Gary, G'Day List,

in the interest of the buyer, to avoid paying high import duties, we
hardly state the correct contents (we state iron meteorites as 'native
iron specimens) and declare a much lesser value, so the customer does
not have to pay import tax.
But that is a dual agreement between us and the customer. We recommend
to insure, and if the customer refuses this, the package will be sent at
his/her own risk.

The sellers duty of care is generally fulfilled with lodging a well
packed parcel at the post office. The customer knows the risk for not
paying the additional money for insurance and for declaring a lesser
value for the contents.

Throughout our time of business we lost three packages, and in all cases
we sent replacements at the same or better value at no costs for the
customer.
It may be a little too much asked for if the value is several thousand
dollars. :-\

Please also keep in mind that to some destinations it cannot be insured for.

In the interest of our business we will always endeavour to keep our
customers satisfied and are very proud of our unblemished reputation.

These are just our thoughts in this matter.

Gary Fujihara wrote:

Aloha,

I have been the victim of theft after discovering that over $1600
worth of meteorites were missing from a shipment I received from
Argentina. I had noticed the package felt light, but discovered that
the US postal service is not responsible for thefts of the contents of
international mailed items that are not insured. This shipment was
not insured and so I will in all likelihood take the full brunt of
this loss.

Thievery by customs officials, foreign and domestic postal workers and
other individuals or organized groups inside and outside the US is a
possibility! I believe most packages arrive at their destinations
with their contents intact, but feel it is negligent and at the very
least unconscionable not to insure shipments at or above the full
value of the contents. I know it costs more to do so, but please
consider insurance especially for foreign shipments. Mailing specimen
cards and paperwork separately from the meteorites can also prevent
thieves from knowing what those "Mineral Samples" are.

Is it fair for me, the buyer to take the loss alone for this theft? I
personally don't think so, unless I was given a choice and elected not
to insure. I would hope that the seller (an IMCA member who, to his
credit is working with me) would have a sudden rush of conscience and
compensate, or share the loss with me, since his act of omission
provides me with little if any recourse. What are my rights, and what
can I do? Do other dealers insure their shipments? What is SOP?

Hello List-Members,

Late last night I received a very sad email from Dorothy Norton.

Richard Norton passed away last week, after a long illness.

I had known fot quite some time that Richard was in poor health, still the
news of his death came as a shock. Last time I called Dorothy, I heard piano
playing in the background, Chopin and very good, I thought it was a CD
playing or the radio, but Dorothy told me it was Richard, and we stopped a
moment to listen, it was beautiful, I had no idea Richard was such a virtuoso.
I had met Richard and Dorothy several years ago in Tucson, Thanks to Twink.
I was very much a new comer then , and I found Richard to be bright,
friendly, funny and so approchable. I still remember showing him a slice of
Tafassasset, he looked at it with his loupe for quite a while, then told me that
this meteorite left him speechless. Dorothy laughed, apparently Richard was
rarely speechless.

And now there is that great big hole in the middle of the Meteorite

Re: [meteorite-list] List Members, what's your job ?

2009-02-19 Thread Norbert & Heike Kammel

Hello List,

I am turning 66 in May this year, officially pensioner since last year
and dealing and wheeling in 'Rocks on Fire', meteorites, impactites,
olivine bombs and opals.
Before that I was an architect (with a German diploma, Dipl.Ing.) with
our former State Government Public Works Department, designing schools.
Now I am enjoying my meteorites, our beautiful Australian Outback (one
eye on the ground - one eye in the sky), and my gorgeous 17 month old
grand daughter.

Re: [meteorite-list] meteorite hunting in Western Australia

2008-07-11 Thread Norbert & Heike Kammel

Hi Goeran,

unfortunately the laws governing the ownership of meteorites in
Australia are quite different in each of our States and Territories.

In Western Australia when you find a _meteorite_ it belongs to the State
and you should hand it in at the Perth museum,
but I assume that quite a few people have found interesting looking
_rocks_ (perhaps looking and feeling quite what others consider being
meteorites), but as not being an expert, these people just pic it up as
interesting rocks and keep them, what is quite legal. However, it would
be an offense if they later sell these _rocks_ as Australian
_meteorites_. You know what I mean?
I guess that's where most of the Millbillillie's come from. However, for
a lot of Australian meteorites which are adequately represented in
Australian institutions you will get a letter of clearance from the
museum. These blokes are not too bad at all, but they also have to abide
to the rules and police the law.

So, Mate, I assume you will _not go meteorite hunting_ but _go out
fossicking for unusual rocks_. And I hope you'll find some really nice
one's.
And if you find on this trip some new and really interesting meteorites,
even martian or some from Venus etc. please leave them where you saw
them so that others will have the same pleasure as you. Or not. :-\

All the very best Goeran, hope you have a great time. And take care out
there.

Hi and thanks for the answer!

I was aware of the export laws and had no intention of bringing any
meteorite back home without permit. But that it belongs to the
government in WA was a surprise.
How could there be so many Millbillillies around with that law? Is it
a new interpretation or a new law?

If (big if) I would find a meteorite where should I leave it?

I just want to test my luck and finally find a meteorite myself, if it
ends up in a museum that is fine with me.

I still have a few days before I go out in the wild... well, I decided
to not stray too far out from the main roads, it should be enough
round to cover for this vacation anyhow.

Hi Goeran/List,

just a quick note to remind you that Federal laws protect meteorites

with an appropriate Museum.* In other States, the finder is able to

Also please keep in mind that the areas are VERY remote and not so

Even though it is now winter time and often rainy carry enough water
