[meteorite-list] Update to U.S. State Department website regarding meteorite hunting

2011-12-19 Thread Robert Ward
Hello all, It's not every day my actions are mentioned on a government website,
I thought I should share this with the meteorite community.    May the new year
usher in a wave of new falls!

State Dept. website)
Like many countries, Oman prohibits the removal of what it considers cultural
heritage items, including archaeological treasures, meteorites, rocks and
stones. Anyone suspected of engaging in such activity may be prosecuted under
Omani law. U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to check with Omani
authorities before removing anything that may fall into this category. Two U.S.
citizens were found guilty of removing stones and imprisoned in 2011.

[meteorite-list] California's second witnessed fall, Red Canyon Lake now official!

2011-08-28 Thread Robert Ward
Hello list. In 2007 I spent two weeks triangulating a large fireball captured
by the Yuba City Sentinal camera, and witnessed by thousands in California. I
organized a sizable search exploiting several avenues of rather unusual nature
as the region was remote, being some twenty miles from the nearest road. A
single stone of 18.4 grams was recovered, an H5 chondrite. Here is the link to
the Meteoritical Bulletin regarding this fall.

[meteorite-list] Conception Junction Pallasite

2011-08-26 Thread Robert Ward
Dave is not able to post at the moment, and rather than rewriting this I am
forwarding it for him. Obviously I had
concerns about specimen transport prior to acquiring the meteorite in
Conception Junction -- not because the landowner wasn't credible, but rather
because it was possible a the stone was transported by a native American,
perhaps centuries ago.

It's hard in photographs to notice this at first, but the average crystal
diameter of Brenham specimens we used for comparison was about 7.5 millimeters,
whereas Conception Junction averages only about 4.5 millimeters. It's
painfully obvious in a direct comparison that the two are quite different based
on physical characteristics alone (including several factors, not just crystal
size).

Then of course there are the findings of UCLA's Dr. John Wasson, the world's
authority on iron and pallasitic meteorites, which are detailed in the
monograph through his contribution to same. To summarize, he wrote, The
information I report here shows there is no main group pallasite that is
closely related to Conception Junction. Conception Junction is unique.

collection will be moving into a new wing with atmospheric controls

construction crews in and out of the house during this time I will be

this is an opportune time for me to liquidate some duplicates, as well

[meteorite-list] NO REGRETS

2010-05-17 Thread Robert Ward
Hello Sonny, List, As per Art's request I will not discuss the Nevada
issue, but I am happy to address Sonny's request that I disclose the
agreements I have in regards to the shares on my hunts. On desert
hunts the finder keeps all of his common chondrites, we do split rare
achondrites, lunars, carbonaceous chondrites, rumurutiites, ect. The
thought of my 22.61 kilo DHO 1431 oriented nose cone having been cut
in half so that my partner could get his share is unimaginable to me.
Also, if one finds a broken individual and your partner finds the
other piece, let's say ten feet away, that piece belongs to the
original finder, and that person calls the shots on how the strewn
field is hunted from that point on. All of our agreements are made
before we even step foot on an airplane, this prevents any
misunderstandings. As far as Glorieta Mountain is concerned, every
person I have hunted with that has found meteorites kept their finds,
Patrick Hermann, Robert Haag, myself, Shauna Russell, Jim Strope. I
feel that if you work for it, it was meant for you. On large scale
projects such as Springwater we do split equally, but this is a mining
project essentially, we all have a lot of money invested, and all open
ground gets covered, the 'luck of the hunt' is not such of a factor,
it was simply in your grid area. Sonny, I hope this public statement
answers you questions. May I suggest you have a contract in writing
with your partners, and the land owners in the future to prevent these
recurrent problems.Regards, Robert Ward.

[meteorite-list] MY REGRETS AND APOLOGY

2010-05-16 Thread Robert Ward
Hello List, Count Deiro and several others has tried to post this and
it would not go through for some reason, so I am giving it a try.
 Regards, Robert Ward

Dear Listees,

Like many of us, I was taken aback by Bill Kies' outburst concerning
Sonny Clary's alleged bad behavior in the Wisconsin field. While
Bills' attack was admittedly shrill, I couldn't help but wonder what
actually happened in Wisconsin...or what happened with Sonny in
Texasor in Georgia. Well, after much soul-searching, I have come
to conclude it's my responsibility to share what happened in Nevada.

First, however, I have two admissions to make for which I am embarrassed:

1. After I found my first meteorite, Nevada's largest, Sonny Clary
informed me It's customary to give the person with whom you are
hunting half of whatever you find. I had no reason not to believe
him. Sonny had the meteorite cut the very next morning. When I was
advised that Sonny's custom of meteorite sharing was not customary, I
asked for it back and he refused. I became angry and I threatened
Sonny, and for that I apologize.

2. I felt stung by the first wave of criticism when the meteorite was
cut, and in an effort to deflect such criticism, I allowed Sonny to
post on his web site and the List an accounting of my find where I
declared that splitting the meteorite had been done in gratitude for
Sonny's mentoring me. This was also inaccurate, and for this
fabrication I apologize as well.

This was not the first time that Sonny and I had hunted, and as I
stood in shock and delight looking down at my first find, Sonny said,
Guido, I know we don't have a deal and I don't want to piss you off,
but it's customary to give the person with whom you're hunting half of
whatever you find. Sonny was a mile away when I found this meteorite,
at our third location of the day, and one where I had hunted before
with my grandsons and friends. When I later asked Sonny why he had
arranged to have it cut so quickly, Sonny admitted that he had done so
because I knew there was a chance that you would change your mind.

Folks, I was blessed to find my first meteorite at age 73. From an
experience which should have been a source of only immense joy, I have
also sadly experienced confusion, sorrow, anger and embarrassment.
Sonny still refuses to return the other half of the meteorite, and
while that's deeply upsetting to me, more importantly than any
meteorite or the anguish experienced, I am sorry if I've disappointed
you, my friends on this great List.

Humbly and sincerely,

Count Deiro

your arguments off something more substantial than than charts,

 Hi Folks,

This is my last post on this subject - I promise.

This train wreck of negativity over the gun photo has gone too far.  I
played a role in that, and for that I apologize.

There are deep divisions in this country that have been encouraged by
those who will profit from keeping the populace divided.  This country
is the most polarized that I have ever seen, and people who would
normally get along fine are at each other's throats at the drop of a
dime.  That is what is fueling a sizeable portion of the hostility
going on right now, it's not just the guns.  The gun provided a spark
that lit the pool of gasoline that was already there.  I posted some
things that I should not have.  I have strong beliefs and those burst
forth in a couple of frustrated posts that were directed more at an
idea than a person or a gun.

Robert Ward, I apologize for calling you son and speaking in a
condescending fashion.  I don't know you and I was lashing out at
something you represent (in my mind) and not you.   I grew up in the
deep south, surrounded by rednecks.  My father was a redneck.  I
know that calling another man son is like a challenge to one's
manhood and it is condescending.   I respect your contributions to
meteoritics and I respect your meteorite hunting skills.  You are a
very underrated hunter and a fair dealer.  I bought a Brenham thin
slice from you a while back on eBay and it is still one of my favorite
pieces.  I have no beef with you personally, unless this episode
created one, which would be regrettable.

For those who may care, here is why I lashed out - my wife is very
sick with chronic health conditions.  I will not go into all of the
long details, but believe me when I say it has been the most difficult
period of our lives.  I almost lost her and sitting in ICU watching
your soulmate fight for life will make a man do some long and hard
thinking.  We don't have health insurance and cannot afford health
insurance because her condition is pre-existing and no insurance
company will touch her with a 10-foot pole, or if they will, the
premiums are so astronomical that they are impossible.  We have never
taken a dime in public assistance and the reason we had no insurance
when her condition arose, is because we both quit full-time management
jobs (and good insurance) to be caregivers for her elderly father who
has Alzheimers - something we did out of love to keep him from going
into a nursing home.   (a fate that a highly-decorated WWII veteran
does not deserve)  So we lost our insurance while we were doing the
right thing - and then my wife got sick.  Where is this going?  All of
the people who are erecting roadblocks to my wife getting affordable
insurance (and thus access to decent healthcare that isn't an
emergency room last resort) are people from the
right/conservative/republican side of the political and social
spectrum.  So, I am developing a big chip on my shoulder towards the
political right because they are, in essence, prolonging my wife's
suffering by preventing meaningful healthcare reform.  And all of the
arguments against it center around money - which doesn't mean a darn
thing to me if I lose my wife and soulmate.  All of the money in the
world won't bring her back if she dies for lack of medical care.
There are other layers to this situation, but I think this explains
the bulk of my frustration.  If you are blessed with good health and
your loved ones are blessed with good health - then wake up each day
be thankful for it - because it is truly a blessing and it can
suddenly be revoked without warning or reason.  This is truly the most
difficult part of my life and my wife's life and it is very
frustrating to be denied medical  care because we lack money and
insurance - and we fall between the cracks in the system.   It is a
nightmare that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

So, when I see/hear/read people from the right-side of the political
spectrum, a surge of hostility, resentment, and frustration wells up
in me. (which is not a good thing, I know).  After I shot my mouth
off, I got a flood replies (some public, some private) and I latched
onto your's because it was the first one I clicked on that disagreed
with me.  Then I shot my mouth off again, and the cycle continued.
And now it has become a major distraction to the List and it has
fostered division in the meteorite circles.  That was not my intent,
but it was clearly the result of my words and I should have

[meteorite-list] Firearms related posts on a meteorite list

2010-02-03 Thread Robert Ward
I spent three years training at the finest firearms institution on the
planet learning about every aspect of the industry, and even designing
and manufacturing my own firearms models, I am an expert in the field,
and I assure you they are not killing tools and assault rifles
when they leave the factory. They are pieces of metal and plastic,
People do the killing, guns are inanimate objects. So Mr. G, I have
been involved with firearms my entire life, ask my friends if they
think I am a morbid person. You say we should not offend our European
friends with our rights and traditions? Growing up I spent my summers
in Africa, and I saw things that offended my that are far to morbid to
mention here, I did not offend them by sharing my thoughts of these
customs, I looked the other way and left, if that pic offends you push
delete. I noticed a post that mentioned a statistic from the FBI
website, 9,369 firearms related murders in the U.S. in 2002, another
statistic to compare this to is the great genocide in Rwanda, 800,000
murdered with machete's. I assure you, in the right hands some sharp
Chinga, or Seymchan slices that are for sale in several rooms in
Tucson could dispatch one's life just as fast as a firearm. Peter
Davidson, those who know me would probably agree that I am someone
that could be pigeon holed into some Hick-Redneck category, Peter, I
am not offended by your prejudice, I am proud of my heritage growing
up on farms and ranches, oh yeah, I am a NRA life member too. I trust
that all of you that are so offended by this pic do not subscribe to
cable, or satellite television services, nor do you attend movies with
morbid guns in them. Grow up, just click delete, and spend this much
time finding some useful input for the METEORITE LIST. Maybe I will
post a pic of my cats high up on one of my collection pieces so the
PETA people can have there turn. Robert Ward
