Mike / flattoprocks wrote: Hello list, I do not post very often. I would guess that 90% of the meteorite people on the list rarely if ever post. Anyway I was wondering if the dealers at the top of the meteorite world still have time to collect meteorites? Do you collect each new fall and or find that you sell? Is it more fun to sell a new meteorite or to add it to your collection? I am fairly new at collecting and selling meteorites. Each time I see or find something that is new or different I tend to collect it. I just added a Canyon Diablo to my collection that has a hole through it. It would be very easy to sell it and make a few bucks, but I would rather keep it in my collection. I found a Gold Basin that shows flow lines and has a rollover lip, I could sell it for a dollar a gram, but I would rather collect it. I guess I am wondering if anyone is collecting meteorites or just selling them. I would like to hear about the really cool one you put in your personal collection, maybe even see a picture. I had a friend give me a 2 kilo Gibeon (the best I have ever seen) as a gift. I would not sell the piece for $100.00 per gram. I also had a friend give me a 14.5 gram iron from AZ, I would not sell it for $100.00 per gram either. Am I the only collector out there? Mike Miller // E-Bay flattoprocks Hi Mike, I rarely post myself. I'm a collector only, I have only 45 in my collection currently, the lastest being a CV3 from Eric Olson. I've bought from quite a few from here on the list, not everyone yet but eventually! Everyone has been great. Mine are all small specimens, ranging from a 9mg DAG 400 to a 416 gram Canyon Diablo. A few photos of mine are on my web site as well as my meteorite collection list: http://home.hvc.rr.com/kb2sms Regards! Just got an email from the meteorite-list that contained the [EMAIL PROTECTED] virus hidden in a file called Disco.zip Fortunately, I'm running Linux so no problem here but Road runner caught it anyway and deleted it before sending it to me. Re: [meteorite-list] OT: Iris Flowers in my garden
Mark, VERY nice! I used to grow some white one's but grubs did them in. I mostly have Black eyed Susans and coneflowers around the house with a smattering of Sunflowers,Zinnias,Daylilies, etc. here and there. Planted a few zebra grasses last fall. I have a couple of small burning bushes too. Gardening is another one of my hobbies, ham radio and astronomy as well. Re: [meteorite-list] "Object that fell into N.J. home is meteorite"
Hi Darryl, Oh I agree. I'm curious about how the real analysis will turn out. I used the term "fusion crust" before when I said I saw none on the suspected object, maybe that was the wrong term. I saw no dark material on it indicating a space origin. Looked to "clean" to me. By the way, my posts seem to take a day or 2 to get to the list, not sure why. I'm mostly a "lurker" to reduce spam coming in to me but now and then I like to join in. Regards! Tom On Jan 6, 2007, at 8:30 AM, Darryl Pitt wrote: Thanks for posting this article.which exasperates. SCIENTIFIC METHOD AT RUTGERS? There is very little about the New Jersey object that resembles a freshly fallen meteorite. It's shape is so ambiguous---at best--- that the only possible way to determine whether it was a freshly fallen meteorite is for a a little destructive analysis. The parameters used for the identification: density, magnetic properties, markings and coloration are wholly insufficient in the determination of the origin of such an object. While it may ultimately be among the most unusual freshly fallen meteorites known to exist, such an assessment cannot and should not ever have been made by simply passing it around for a casual analysis and singing kumbaya. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteowrong anecdotes?
Hi Rob! Well I'm a ham radio operator and one night a few years ago I had a conversation with a guy on a "UFO" net who swears HE had a meteorite and actually seen it come down. I asked him to tell his story. He said he saw it come down ON FIRE, it threw sparks all the way down to the ground next to him and it was red hot and smoking! WOW He had a photo of it on a web site and it was obviously NOT a meteorite of coarse. I just checked and the photo is gone now. I tried to explain to him there was no way it was on fire and sparking but he got fairly upset with me for not believing him. Either he was full of it or someone was playing with him! Regards! I got out of the car and looked for bullet holes but didn't see any. I continued, on the return i noticed one of my headlights was out. (It turned dark) In the am i began replacing the headlight when i found the hole i had missed the last night but the angle didn't look right. i stuck a 1/2 " dowel in the hole and figured it had entered at about 5 degrees east and 10 degrees north. I removed the headlight and found this little critter inside. The object had pierced the headlight, bounced off the frame of the car and ended up inside the headlight. I immediately suspected islamic terrorists, of course. (i was way ahead of the curve on this, i spent time in the middle east) being forced to abandon this theory (it required a muslem shooting a rock gun from a heilocopter) i concluded that it was a meteorite. had i been in a little more of a hurry it would have entered at my clavicle and exited at my ...well never mind. the picture is poor, it feels like it's made of metal and has little pits in it. it's about 5/8". i was hoping someone could tell me what it is. i keep it to remind me of the fickle finger of fate. i found (on the web) some nickle iron ones that look like it, course i found some nickle iron ones that didn't." Hi Michael and list, Mine is a 154 gram Canyon Diablo bought in 1988 from (coughBethanycough) I didn't know about them at the time though so don't fault me for it! I still have it. Since then I've bought many from the great folks here on the list, including Mike. I think my meager collection is now up to about 55 or so specimens, mostly small. Regards, Tom in N.Y.
