[meteorite-list] AD - Paper Thin NWA 6355 (ALUN) Slice - Apollo 16

2012-12-06 Thread fallingfusion
Good Evening...

I would like to make a fine offering this evening. I have available a
paper-thin (1mm) slice of NWA 6355 (you know... the one with very close
chemical resemblance to Apollo 16 samples ; ) The slice weighs in at 0.665g,
with its individual matrix consisting of a large transparent crystal
(accounting for nearly 1/4 of its surface area. You will not find another one
like it), and a few tiny pinhole vesicles that go completely through its
thickness. Needles to day, this one is a stunner under the scope. $399 brings
it home to one lucky buyer. Postage is one me, and the original dealer specimen
card goes in the box with it. Photos furnished upon request. Happy Holidays.

[meteorite-list] AD - Liquidation Time - I'm Outta Here

2012-10-13 Thread fallingfusion
Good evening everyone. Its been a long time since I last visited.

Short and to the point - I'll be liquidating my remaining inventory over the
next couple of weeks. My website is already down (not by choice)... but that is
whole different story. Lets just say I have learned a lesson in backing up
files onto a disc or remote storage. Here are the first few.. more to come.

Estherville - very fresh 24.7g triangular part slice - cut from a slab obtained
from Rob Elliot, who acquired it from NHM-London. $195

Bensour - pristine individual stone, 27.33g, ~90% fusion crust. Comes with P.
Thomas and M. Bandli collection labels. $210

Sikhote Alin - black crusted shrapnel, nice shape, 53g - $65

Please email for photos. Paypal, check, or money order all accepted. Thank you.

horizon. Any small bit that made it to the ground probably ended up somewhere
around Mifflin, WI or S.

Re: [meteorite-list] Question for dealers re: displaying sold items

2011-04-12 Thread fallingfusion
I should have noted that although I am not a "dealer" per say, my website still
needs quite an update/redesign, ect. regardless.

Dealers who did not produce their own website most likely don't have the
capability to update it each time a specimen sells. Furthermore, each
individual update made costs money, paid to the individual or company hired out
to maintain the website for them.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Question for dealers re: displaying sold items

List,

I am curious why almost every meteorite dealer's website displays
specimens that have already sold right along side specimens that are
in stock and available for sale? I do not know of any other market
that does this; it is unique to meteorites in my experiences. As a
collector/prospective buyer I do not see the upside to this practice.
It does nothing for helping me find what I'm looking for; in fact it
is counter productive when I am shopping for a specimen as it makes it
more difficult to see what is actually available for sale. It's
synonymous with looking for clothes in your size and every store has
displays showing your size but not actually selling any clothes that
fit you. Maybe a separate page for "Sold Specimens" would be more
appropriate if there was a need that I am not aware of to display
pieces that have already been sold? I look forward to becoming
educated on this matter.

Michael in so. Cal.

Hi Count and List,

When the Chinese and Indians start driving cars at half the rate
Americans do, the oil industry will either collapse or WWIII will
start. There is not enough oil inside this planet to feed the
projected demand in the next 50 years. If we are smart, we will
relegate oil to the production of plastics and wean ourselves off that
filthy fuel. I'm not a tree-hugger, just someone who can read the
oily writing on the wall for petroleum.

I propose we find a way to convert caliche-covered, weathered, H5
NWA's into fuel - there are enough of those to feed the world for
generations to come. :)

Best regards,

MikeG

While I agree with some of what you've written, the aforementioned is factually
inaccurate. What you're referring to has nothing in and of itself to do with
libel. Zilch.

For those who are interested, The New York Times Manual of Style will explain
all stylistic choices employed by the paper

While the writer of the piece obviously did a hack job, it should be noted he
won the Pulitzer Prize, twice, and is considered by many to a dean of science
writers.

Overseas list members, if you have the opportunity, please peruse the
International Herald Tribune to see if they picked up the story and run it in
its entirety.

Thanks and all the best / d,

Good Evening List,

I was doing some Spring cleaning, and stumbled upon the invoice and mail order
receipt from my first meteorite purchase. "36 gram - Gibeon Iron Meteorite
Slice, Robert A. Haag - Meteorites", dated July 14, 1997. Has it already been
nearly fourteen years???.. I said to myself. Like many collectors, I had
purchased my first, never realizing that it would only be the very beginning if
an everlasting obsession.

Through the years, I have only shared a glimpse of my collection with a few
people. I think it's about time for a grand unveiling, a sneak peek into the
"Falling Fusion Meteorite Collection". Please enjoy at your leisure.

Re: [meteorite-list] Sonic Boom

2011-03-29 Thread fallingfusion
Hello Sonny and Listmembers,

Interesting. Perhaps the sound waves travel around the epicenter (anything
located directly beneath) as they move towards the ground. I imagine circular
rings moving expanding in an outward direction as they travel to the Earths
surface. The higher the altitude of breakup, the larger the rings will be when
they "touch down"... and the further away one must be from the center to
actually hear the sonic booms. This is just a guess.
Anyone with more knowledge care to elaborate on this hypothesis?

Hi All,

I had a chance to talk to Skip Wilson about the Portales Fall. The
occupants of two of the nearby residences (about a half mile apart)
sitting directly under the main break up did not hear anything. One of
the residents happened to be working outside when the meteorite broke
apart. Interestingly enough the Portales residents who were situated
directly behind and in front of the break up heard two distinct sonic
booms.

Re: [meteorite-list] Video of OK fireball

2011-03-26 Thread fallingfusion
Good Afternoon Rob and Listmembers,

There are several videos of this fireball. However, what I really wanted to see
was that signature bright flash (or flashes) towards the end of it's "bright
flight", which it clearly doesn't show. Also, I haven't heard any serious
reports of sonic booms being heard. One or both of these features would have
had every serious meteorite hunter flocking to OK for a weekend hunt.

Regardless, here is my favorite video. I find it kinda funny that the
'Meteor'ologist didn't even notice the fireball approaching in the background!

The more reports on this event I read on this website, the more I'm
convinced that no meteorites made it to the ground. A couple reports state
that
it "Streaked to the ground". A couple more stated it lasted about 3
seconds...a rather short period for a meteorite dropping meteor. Some reports
are
at 5 to 10 seconds. As an experienced meteor observer, I know for a fact
that for most casual meteor sightings, duration times are notoriously longer
than they really are. No serious reports about sonic booms also. This all
sounds more like a fragile cometary object to me. They aren't known as
meteorite droppers. As for the green color being reported, I wouldn't give
that any meaning for the case of dropped meteorites or not. At the cost of gas
nowadays, I wouldn't waste any time driving out to any proposed landing
sites unless I just happened to live in the area.

[meteorite-list] AD - eBay Tsunami Relief Benguerir Heart

2011-03-22 Thread fallingfusion
Good Afternoon Listmembers,

I had listed a small Benguerir part slice on eBay to benefit the "Japan
Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund". Starting price is only $3 (!!) and there
are no bids yet. Auction ends in ~8 hrs. (!!) I do realize this is a small part
slice, but please put into consideration that 100% of the proceeds go to
charity. In times of such an extensive disaster, every little bit counts.

I wonder if they they'll pop a little iodine into that "free drink" at no

Yes, I learned about the theory of our Moons formation in.. what was it.. fifth

So does that make every other moon in our galaxy a "planetary body" also?

At a time in the distant past, NASA in its infinite wisdom made general
reference to the solar system bodies as comets, asteroids, planets and their
satellites, the latter referenced as planetary. Satellite is an ugly term
and there are a lot of moons. So, to include our moon in the planetary fold
seems reasonable, at least for meteorite people. Besides, the mostly
accepted theory about the origin of the Moon is that it came from the Earth
via impact and accretion of debris, so the Moon is a viable planetary body
in its own right.

Live with it - who knows, may be angrites come from Mercury.

[meteorite-list] The Term "Planetary"

To the list,

I was sitting here reading some emails, and just thought...

Who in the world ever came up with the term "Planetary" in reference to

First of all, our Moon isn't a planet.. and secondly, to my knowledge, the only
"Planetary" meteorites in current existence have an origin of Mars. Hence,
"Martian" meteorites. Did I miss the big announcement of those from Venus and

Re: [meteorite-list] "Great News" to eBay sellers.

2011-03-16 Thread fallingfusion
There is probably a reason for this.

I have seen sellers listing multiple items using "Buy It Now" for, say, $.99 ..
and then charging $50 for shipping. That way the final value fees for the
seller are greatly reduced. So, I guess eBay got fed up with these loop-hole
tactics, as if eBay/Paypal Inc. doesn't make enough annual revenue anyhow. So..
sellers, especially those that charge actual shipping and ship heavy items,
will suffer the most as a result of this policy change.

Good points Adam,

Ebay/paypal gets sellers coming and going. Between listing fees and final
value fees, not to mention paypal fees, its getting harder and harder for
sellers to keep a decent margin for themselves without driving their prices too
high to compensate. Now ebay wants to assess final value fees to include
shipping on top of sold item? What the heck!!!?? Shipping has absolutely
NOTHING to do with ebay! Why should ebay get revenue on their seller's
expense?

Re: [meteorite-list] "Great News" to eBay sellers.

2011-03-16 Thread fallingfusion
For those of you that sell on feeBay. Take alook at this "great news" to take
affect on April 19th. This first paragraph seems too good to be true... but
then look at the second paragraph - the final value fee will now be applied to
shipping fees also! So basically, if you have to ship a large, heavy item..
eBay will charge you extra for it, even though shipping is done third party by
the seller. What a load of

Ryan

"We're writing with some great news:

Starting April 19, you'll be able to list your items Auction-style FREE, at any
start price, up to 50 listings a month. Plus you can add the Buy It Now option
to these listings FREE to grab buyers in a hurry. Set the price you want and
sell it fast! This is not a limited-time special but a change in eBay Standard
fees to help you list more for FREE all the time?even those high ticket items!
Pay only if your item sells.

Also, because we know buyers take into consideration the total cost of an item,
also starting April 19, to encourage sellers to keep shipping costs low, the
Final Value Fee will be applied to the total amount of the sale, INCLUDING
SHIPPING."

Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't even reply back... but editing and
forging emails and reposting them to a public forum is a big no-no. Doing such
activities could land you in legal trouble in situations other than this
unimportant tirade of yours.

Please remind me to never reply to any of your ridiculous emails in the future.

Thank you Dr. Ryan of Falling Fusion, but I beg to differ since you are the
one that wrote to me and started on your diatribe about disliking my
politics. So, in typical republican fashion you have twisted the truth all
around to fit it so that you make yourself sound better. See, Faux Noise has
taught you something.

Let's see who believes me and who believes you, since if you want to play

Re: [meteorite-list] A fundamental tone

2011-03-10 Thread fallingfusion
Guys and Girls,

The list would (..and hopefully will) continue to remain a much calmer and
peaceful environment, provided that politics and religion, or another persons
health or legal issues, aren't discussed or even mentioned without said persons
consent to do so. Specifically, in regards to politics, for the life of me, I
do not understand why some list members feel the need to voice their opinions
regarding such on a list that is specifically intended to discuss METEORITES,
and all the nifty things that are associated with them. People have, and always
will, carry strong views and beliefs, and it is best to keep those things off
of this forum.

As long as we don't sway from that one thing that each of us holds dear to our
hearts, there will be no problems.

With that said, I think Mike deserves a second chance. Just because you get
thrown out of the bar once doesn't mean that you're banned for life. Come
back!... One year!! (For you Seinfeld fans ; )

All the best,

Ryan

While I am in favor of Mike reporting to the list again about his most recent
adventure (..well, I am just curious about that personal story, I must
admit..), I am also inclined to generally recommend very moderate and polite
future postings here regarding this special issue, please.

This list acts internationally, and is surely monitored by a great variety of
readers from all fields. As long as we keep it polite, rational, and
argumentative, and in an overall reasonable fundamental tone, it will be good
for all in a situation, where we are faced with a certain trend of national law
enforcements which probably would not advance the long term evolution of
meteoritics in a positive sense, would that be any different.

Dear List,

As I continue to restructure my collection in favor of old falls, I am
making many nice collection pieces available. There are pieces from
Nininger, Dupont, rare falls and finds, and some scarce irons. Some have
painted numbers and old labels. If you would like a list of material
available please reply privately, off-list. I'm working on it now and should
have it ready soon.

Part 2: The biweekly plug for eBay auctions:

http://shop.ebay.com/historic-meteorites/m.html

A mix of everything - Historic, martian, falls, rare finds, many pieces
sitting at 99 cents. There's also a nice pair of Monnig Kaffir's with
sequential numbers! The starting bid on those was my cost from the Cureton
Collection many years ago.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

I have seen what looked like an open grave discovered by Guido's wife, Joan and
Zann. There was a perfect rectangle dug several feet deep out in the middle of
nowhere. Perhaps some gangster dug it to make a point when Vegas was under mob
control. We continue to check it from time-to-time to make sure it isn't
buried
over.

Caches of old casino chips have been stashed in secret places throughout the
desert. We were shown one location where tokens numbered in the thousands with
several rare ones. They were coming out of concrete, put there in an
unsuccessful effort to destroy them. It looked like fossil negatives where
they
fell out.

A four hour hike from our house will take you to a very old aircraft wreck. A
short hike will take you to petroglypts and a water fall.

I once found a dead turtle with a transmitter hooked to its back. This was
while
hiking with Sonny and Rob.

We stumbled onto a hidden dwelling surrounded by bushes with no power or
utilities and a sign that said keep the F--- OUT. We took it seriously and
backed out of there slowly. We figured it was somebody growing product or the
kind of lab that one would not want to deal with.

We found a stolen SUV hidden in a canyon and reported its GPS coordinates to
the
police.

One time, I was startled by a dog running up to me in the middle of nowhere
with
six pack of beer strapped around its neck. I then met the toothless owner who
told me not to be afraid because "Buddy" or "Bud" for short doesn't bite very
hard or all that often. He then drank one of the beers and offered me one. I
think I was more afraid of the owner than the dog.

Happy Hunting,

Adam

That is incorrect. There were several occasions where the max. absentee was
announced as live floor bidders were actively bidding.

I was there and as I heard it, absentee MAX bids were NOT announced in advance
but were treated as regular bids. Sometimes it was said that the current bid
was an absentee bid but that was the extent of the information. All winning
bidders were announced on each auction (by bidder number, never by name) so
were not identified enless we were watching who was holding up the bidder cards
as the bids were made.

I think there may have been some problems last year (not certain, but ...)
however this year it is my impression that absentee bids were treated as
regular bids. At most, it would have been said that the current bid was
absentee but the next bid would win 'in house.'

Again, I do NOT remember any absentee MAX bids being given out early. There
were a couple of cases where absentee entry bids were announced as in "I have
an absentee beginning bid of $$$, so will anyone bid ?"

[meteorite-list] Auction Policies

2011-02-06 Thread fallingfusion
Good morning everyone. I am wondering what auction policies are for absentee
bids placed in a live auction. Is the highest maximum absentee bid normally
announced to the floor bidder(s) that is/are actively bidding on that
particular lot? I would find such a practice to be of advantage to the bidders
in attendance, especially when the amount is announced just moments before the
hammer is being raised for last call.

Upon looking at this auction again, I am now suspecting that this sample might
be the real thing. That label appears to be a NASA control label specific to
space materials, which in this case is the supposed "moon rock."

My question now is this... There appears to be a small photo of the specimen in
question on this control label. If so, that would further define this specimen
as authentic.

Could this be a research specimen that somehow escaped government control?

Something to think about.

But all said, with the legal aspects of legit ownership, I would be reluctant
to bid on it...

Steve,
"Where is the beef"
Sure , we would all love to have what you have but , what is the difference
between what you have and anybody else?
Say, I was the king of England and my good buddy the President of the USA gave
me a genuine moon rock. And he did give away plenty.
I decide to sell it on EBay.
Where is the law that says that is illegal?
And how does that differ from what you have?
Is it because you did not get caught buying yours?
Why is it okay for you to buy moon material and not others?
Again, "show us the beef"?
What exactly does the law state and how do you know this? Normally , when
people make statements they want to back them up with evidence?
I believe you I just want to read it myself. And I'm quite sure you have piqued
the interest of others as well.
Yes, I am home getting my frozen pipes replaced. Waiting for the B-bash
tonight.
Best regards,
Carl

Re: [meteorite-list] WisconsinSchool project - Suggestion

2010-05-21 Thread fallingfusion
..and I second that notion. Altough I strongly disagree that the price of the
new WI material, especially individual stones, will come down considerably over
time. The number of stones recovered so far doesn't even come close to that of
Buzzard Coulee, or even Ash Creek for that matter. Which also explains why
there have been no offers of whole stones for the school project. There simply
aren't enough of them to meet the demand... and there never will be.

Hi Anne,

I completely agree. It is actually foolish to use donated funds -- at
this time -- to purchase stones from the latest Wisconsin fall. Very
little bang for the buck. For the same money, you could buy an NWA
chondrite over 100 times larger that is nearly as fresh-looking.

I think a far better use for the limited funds would be a modest
variety of medium-sized, relatively inexpensive meteorites. For
the cost of one tiny, unimpressive specimen from the lastest
Wisconsin fall, you could instead purchase and donate a large iron,
a pallasite or mesosiderite, an ordinary chondrite *AND* an
achondrite. --Rob

Michael,

If I may make a suggestion...

Lets think about Meteorites in general, rather than just one Wisconsin
meteorite.
Since you now have about $750.00, buy an assortment of reasonably
priced, classified, known meteorites. Maybe a Canyon Diablo, a small
Brenham, a couple stonies with different classification. No crumbs,
large enough pieces so they can see what a metorite looks like, and how
many different types there are. That would lead to a much better
understanding of meteorites, than just one small stone.

If you decided to do that, I am quite sure you would find more offers
and more help. In fact, I would be willing to help you with donations.

And if you really insist on getting them a piece of the Wisconsin stone,
then I suggest you wait 6 months to a year, when more stones have been
found, and the price has gone down. As it always does with new falls,
particularly when it is an ordinary chondrite; look at Buzzard Coulee:
$40/g during the Tucson Show, $10/g now.

What do you think?

[meteorite-list] The Last Four Weeks

2010-05-14 Thread fallingfusion
Hey all..

Where have the last four weeks gone? Its hard to believe that it's been a full
month since the now-famous Wisconsin fireball dropped a little black gold for
us "meteorite aficionados" atop the quaint farming communities of Iowa and
Grant counties. Whether or not one went home empty handed, it will be an
experience that many, including myself, will never forget. (..Now if only I
would have seen that darn bolide! lol)

Kind regards,

Didn´t someone quote "B.. rulez!" (well, I remember something like that:-)) one
of those recent months and years, regarding the actual situation in Down Under?
Well, may be by virtue of a well-prepared petition to the MetSoc or may be by
some other thoughtful initiatives based on reasonable ideas, things might have
a certain chance to change and finally turn the global vector for this issue
spinning into an upwards position - even for this tough local case, hopefully...

There are many factors considered in naming a meteorite. It is rare for the
NomCom to pick its own name out of the blue. It usually serves as more of a
review panel than anything else. Some consideration is given to the finder, to
the first person to describe the meteorite, to commercial usage, to the
distribution of find locations, etc. In this case, I don't know what will
happen. If there has been contact with the committee, I don't know about it
yet and no proposals are on the table at this time. But I know the
classification has been done.

 Greetings,

It will be called what the Nomenclature Committee decides to name it as
naming has always been done in the past. Dr. Jeff Grossman made mention
the name Livingston would probably not be used due to conflict with other
 named specimens.

I can see people who go and look for meteorites, wherever it is,being costly.
Like food, water, getting to the fields, flying or driving. Then paying out extra
money to hunt on private lands and then promising to pay the land owners
extra. It really helps to live near the strewnfiel like I do. 2.5 hours to drive
there.I just have to pay for 1 tank of gas and lunch than go back home and
sleep in my own bed. But alot of the hunters spends days or weeks then that is
what costly.Plus do not forget the emotional part.Being away from family and
maybe not finding any meteorites.Happy mothers to all the moms!

Just wondering why food should be included for expenses. Don't people eat when

Subject: [meteorite-list] WI Meteorite Hunting Statistics

Hi listees and fellow meteorite hunters in the field. I'm back from the
field and I'm compiling (unscientifically) some statistical data that
I've not yet seen anyone attempt to calculate in any way but a cursory
manner thus far. If you've hunted the WI meteorite fall, and have data
you'd like to share, please send me an email with your hunting
information/statistics.

Primarily what I'm looking for is totals, hours hunted, days hunted,
meteorites found, and costs associated with this hunt. I'd like to do
this while WI is fresh in everyone's minds and I think that will provide
the most reliable information, and also give some an idea of the costs
in time and money that go into recovering meteorites from the field.

Please send in the following format to make it easier to add all totals.
If you can think of any other data that should be included in this list,
please feel free to respond on-list so others can add their input.

I will be including all my totals as well in this data.

Total Days In The Field:
Total Hours Hunted Per Day:
Total Miles Walked Per Day:
Total Costs: (including airfare, hotel, rental car, food, fuel, cost of
meteorites purchased, miscellaneous expenses; i.e. "pay to hunt"
expenses) This need not be itemized, and can be a total cost for your
hunt...
Total Number of Meteorites Found:
Total Weight Found:

This survey is completely anonymous, and your identity will be kept
confidential, all you need send is totals/numbers.

In addition, those of you who'd like to share coordinates that would
also be appreciated, again, your anonymity will be kept unless you state
specifically that you wouldn't mind releasing your identity publicly in
association with your data.

All this information will be published on my site and on-list to share
with everyone in a completely transparent and "open" manner.

Thank you all in advance for your cooperation.

Hi Aziz and List,

Attempting to figure out meteorite pricing is a difficult challenge. The very
best you can do is follow trends.

In the case of new falls, hype will increase prices only temporarily then they
tend to plunge dramatically. I stopped trying to figure out the hammer stone
thing a long time ago. I can not figure out why, New Orleans which penetrated a
house top to bottom only sells for between $25.00 to $40.00/gram when there was
only a single stone in which very little was released. Claxton which weighs
much less than Peekskill and hit a smaller target is currently selling for less
than this new fall which is just an ordinary although beautiful chondrite.
Completely crusted Pultusk peas only sell for about $40.00/gram at most and
offer significant historical value.

Although Moroccan meteorite falls sell for much less, they are none the less
rare. I have done much better investing in Moroccan falls than North American
falls, neither of which I invest in anymore. I no longer chase falls and
haven't for years. These days, I usually pick up a single specimen of each for
my collection after the hype has died down. I have lost money on nearly every
recent fall I have ever invested in by jumping in too soon. I learned the hard
way.

I find it much more enjoyable pursuing cold finds with hopes of nailing down
the first North American Lunar. I guess if a fall were to hit here in Nevada,
I might chase some of it down but would get out before things turned ugly. A
lot of Nevadans love their guns and it is not uncommon at all to run into
people in the field wearing them on the the hip, cocked and ready to rock. I
hear people shooting off guns in the desert all of the time here in Laughlin,
Nevada. Even the local preacher can be found plinking cans out in the desert a
few blocks from my house. Luckily everybody I have run into out in the field
here has been friendly so far. I think this would change if they ever felt
they were being ripped off. I am surpised with all this talk of big money and
meteorites, nobody has been shot yet although I have heard of a few close calls.

The dollar cost averaging statement that was recently made makes no sense at
all to me. When did meteorites become commodities? Dollar cost averaging down
doesn't seem like a sound investment. From a collector's standpoint, I think
showing some restraint and waiting is a better move than paying when the hype
is maximum. If you think of meteorites as mere commodities, you are missing
the real value. Sometimes, things are worth more than just the price tag
somebody has arbitrarily attached to them and I am not talking about monetary
value.

Best Regards,

Adam

Hello Adam,

I'm not sure that I understand when you say that you "no longer chase falls and
haven't for years."

Weren't you here in WI chasing down Livingston a week or so ago?

Please don't take offence, as that is not my intention. Just wondering.

Kind Regards,

Ryan
