Re: [meteorite-list] I have a problem with some rusting meteorites

2010-10-25 Thread Gracie Logan
Tim and Mike,

In March of this year, I asked a similar question regarding meteorites,
humidity and rusting. (I live in FL and it's tough on iron-heavy space rocks.)

1. I want to post a woefully belated thanks to Mike G, Linton, Rohr, Carl,
Göran Axelsson, Marco Langbroek, Graham E, John Hendry, Jerry Flaherty and
Darryl Pitt for being so incredibly helpful! (I hope I didn't forget anyone.)

2. If you search the Met List for my original subject heading (all or in part)
you'll get some excellent answers that are just too numerous and complete to
post in one email.

My subject was: Meteorites and Humidity: Some Questions . . .

Again, belated thanks Met List! You saved my collection from further damage!

Mason's site. I will check that out.

I live in Maryland and it is moderate humidity here. Other than
sonny's recommendation for rust prevention aren't there other methods

special salts, or a de-humidifier or something? One of the things I
read online was having bright/warm lights in the case where you keep
 your meteorites.

 Any other ideas out there?

Exciting!

I'm here as a resource if you need anything at all. My schedule is
flexible allowing me free time during business hours should you need
someone to head somewhere and do something. Not sure what that might
be--visit a local news or police station? Interview witnesses?

I'll mass email everyone I know at work and town and see if anyone saw
anything.

 Hi Gracie,

By what the two witnesses so far have reported, I would give it an
 excellent
chance of having produced meteorites, but finding them is a whole
 different
story unless one hit something and was found!

 Hello All,

I interviewed someone today in Florida (in person) who witnessed last
night's fireball in Florida. Here are the coordinates from where this
 person
 witnessed it near Sebring, FL:
  27°23'48.91N
  81°24'4.84W

This lady and her husband were driving north on County Road 17 just
 south
 of
Sebring. She confirmed, along with her husband on the phone, that it
 fell
around 9:30 pm straight down (towards north), but slightly to the right
(east). They saw the fireball moving and then light up before
 disappearing
on the horizon. They did not see it fall into pieces like Larry's
 friend
 did
up in Gainesville so It fell closer to Gainesville opposed to Sebring.

Here is a link to an image I put together using Larry's witness report
 and
mine to show fall directions from these two witnesses . I tried to load
 on
 a
Google Earth satellite image but after re-installing everything on my
computer last week, I can not make Google Earth work properly. I am
 trying
Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, but neither seems to let me use
 the
Push-Pin option while viewing in satellite view. No time to mess with
 it
now, have to pack for a trip somewhere else, leaving tomorrow.

 Hi Everyone:

A friend of mine (Greg Beckner) in Gainsville, FL just sent me this. He
was out with a group of scouts and saw the following (second
 paragraph):

I took my Cub Scout pack to the model airplane field last night
 showed
them a few R/C aircraft. A sidebar to that is the field is several
 miles
out of town and has a good view of the horizon and darker skies, so I
 also
took the telescope. We saw Mercury about 5 deg from Venus last night
 a
few deep sky objects at the last part of Astronomical twilight before
 moon came up.

Around 9:30 local time, while packing up, I saw the most impressive
fireball meteor almost directly to the south. It started like an
 Iridium
flare, but just got brighter brighter. It was close
enough where you could see a flame structure and fragments breaking
 off.
Will the next Meteorite Men episode be filmed here??? So far,
 nothing
in paper yet. Is there something that keeps track of such events? I'm
sure we weren't the only ones seeing it (*it scared the crap out of my
 kids!!!)

Here's GPS cords of flying field - I was looking Almost Due South -
 maybe
 just a
little to the East of due South. Time was perhaps between 9:20
 9:40pm
EDT. Path of the object was almost straight down it was about 35 deg
 up...

[meteorite-list] Meteorites and Humidity: Some Questions . . .

2010-03-05 Thread gracie
Hello Met List!

Quick background info:

About six or eight months ago, I began a meteorite collection. (I am so
completely hooked.) I store them primarily in Riker boxes and some in the
jewel cases they arrived in. I live in north central Florida and except
for my air conditioned home, I don't have the meteorites in any other
climate controlled container or cabinet. I'm noticing a few of the irons
(Miles especially) and one or two of the stony irons to appear a little
rustier than when they arrived.

I've read the good information here
(http://www.meteoritemarket.com/preserv.htm), but still have some
questions.

Given my location, is it unreasonable for me to expect that simply
purchasing (and consistently replacing) desiccant for each Riker box and
jewel box will stave off rust? I love having my meteorites on display and
the notion of squirreling them away in airtight tupperware makes me sad.
That being said, I would prefer to protect them than have them ruined by
humidity.

There are a number of places I can purchase desiccant online. Is there a
preferred or recommended location?

Finally, is a kit like this worth my time and money?
http://www.bhigr.com/store/product.php?productid=453

Thanks so much for your help!

 Hi,

You all know that a meteorwrong is a suspected rock or
metal piece that is not a meteorite, right? Anyway,it was
storming outside, so I had some free time and was thinking
up some new meteorite words to play around with. Kind of a
 stupid exercise but was fun.

Meteorwriter: Someone who writes a book or article about
meteors/meteorites. Postings in forums don't count.

 Meteorighter: Someone who corrects meteor/meteorite
 mistakes. Also a meteorite ombudsman.

Meteorbite: What happens when someone buys their first
meteorite, gets hooked and collects more.

Meteortykes: Newbies (or young kids) collecting or learning
 about meteors/meteorites.

 Mine came in yesterday!

Must say they truly are amazing Jeff!
Really great, can't believe how heavy they are, and the letters are so
clean a crisp, I highly recommend them to everybody!
Whats really cool about them is that they have just the slightest
 magnetic
field with north and south poles.
Thank you so much for providing the meteorite community with these
excellent, affordable tools and collectible ones at that!

 Have a Great Day!

Me to, Mine came in the mail today as well.

A measure of it's Cool Factor is how long it takes me to put it on a
microscope (My personal highest form of compliment) The shots are just
 taken
through a stereo scope but it nicely shows off the crisp detail.

Very nice Jeff! Well done! This will be the last scale cube I will
 ever
 need.

Email me for some shots of the cube!

I notice Jeff's site shows these are almost sold out, so I'd like to
 add
my voice to the chorus and recommend that all who are considering
purchasing one or more of these fine cubes, do so asap!

Re: [meteorite-list] fireball over Southern AZ

2009-12-22 Thread gracie
Mark,

My husband saw one over Florida on the 15th. Unfortunately, I never ran
across anyone else who saw it.

You might want to check the AMS Fireball Sightings Log over the next
couple of days or weeks to see if anything gets reported.

http://www.amsmeteors.org/fireball/fireball_log2009.html

Your cousin should log his sighting as well. (I logged my husband's
sighting for him.)

Gracie

 Hey all,

My cousin sent me a message in Facebook this morning (see below). Has
anybody else seen this or any reported sightings? Surely there were a lot
of folks out shopping or enjoying the evening...

the other night about 6pm heading back to tucson i was in eloy and saw a
falling star, being cloudy it made the clouds glow for a bit and the tail
sparkled. it had to land near the tortillitas or in catalina but it made a
boom sound i had my window down. it was the coolest i ever seen and i seen
 many out on the road.

Re: [meteorite-list] Engineering Christmas

2009-12-19 Thread gracie
This is my first holiday season on the list and the first time I've seen
this.

Outstanding!

 Hi All,

Once again, it seems it has befallen upon me uphold the job of official
 Santa
Physics story reposter. So, in the true spirit of the season, here it
 is yet again.

And as always, I have not checked the math.

 Enjoy.

 Martin

Engineering Christmas: Some points of contention.

There are approximately two billion children (persons under 18) in the
world. However, since Santa does not visit children of Muslim, Hindu,
Jewish or Buddhist religions, this reduces the workload for Christmas
night to 15% of the total, or 378 million (according to the Population
Reference Bureau). At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per
household, that comes to 108 million homes, presuming that there is at
least one good child in each dwelling.

Santa has about 31 hours of Christmas to work with thanks to the
different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he
travels east to west which seems logical. This works out to 967.7
visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian household
with a good child, Santa has about 1/1000th of a second to park the
sleigh, hop out, jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute
the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been
left for him, get back up the chimney, jump into the sleigh and get on
to the next house. Assuming that each of these 108 million stops is
evenly distributed around the earth (which of course, we know to be
false, but will accept for the purpose of our calculations), we are
now talking about 0.78 miles per household; a total trip of 75.5
million miles, not counting bathroom stops or other breaks.

This requires that Santa's sleigh moves at 650 miles per second--3000
times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest
man-made vehicle, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles
per second, and conventional reindeer can run at best 30 miles per
 hour.

The payload of the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming
that each child gets nothing more than a medium sized Lego set (two
pounds), the sleigh is carrying over 500,000 tons, not counting Santa
himself. On land a conventional reindeer can pull about 300 pounds.
Even granting that the flying reindeer could pull ten times the
normal amount, the job just cannot be done with eight or nine of
them-- Santa would need 360,000 reindeer!

This increases the payload, not counting the weight of the sleigh,
another 54,000 tons or roughly seven times the weight of the Queen
Elizabeth (the ship, not the monarch).

4.600,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air
resistance-- this would heat up the reindeer in the same fashion as
spacecraft re-entering the earth's atmosphere (which may explain
Rudolph's red nose). The lead pair of reindeer would absorb 14.3
quintillion joules of energy per second. In short, they would
instantaneously vaporize exposing the reindeer behind them to the same
friction and also creating deafening sonic booms in their wake. The
entire reindeer team would vanish within 4.26 thousandths of a second,
or right about the time Santa reached the fifth house on his trip.

Not that it matters, however since Santa, as a result of accelerating
from a dead stop to 650 miles per second in .001 seconds, would be
subjected to centrifugal forces of 17,500 Gs. A 250 pound Santa (which
seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of the sleigh by
4,315,015 pounds of force, instantly crushing his bones and organs and
reducing him to a quivering red-hot blob of goo. And yet, he returns
 year after year.

Therefore, the rules of physics obviously don't apply to Santa and his
yearly mission. Speaking as an engineer, this guy must know something
about relativity that we have yet to discover.

[meteorite-list] Fireball seen in Gainesville, FL

2009-12-15 Thread gracie
Hi List,

I'm mostly a lurker, but just wanted to report that my husband just walked
in the door excitedly telling me he saw a large greenish fireball over our
house as he came up the driveway. I'm heading outside now so he can show
me exactly which direction it came from and how long it lasted.

Hopefully there will be further reports of this event! (So disappointed I
didn't see it!)

Quick update:

The fireball appeared below Aldebaran fairly low in the sky, and fell
straight down to the south/southwest. He said the light was so bright it
lit up the roof of our house and the surrounding area.

I'm really hoping for more reports tomorrow. Whee!

Re: [meteorite-list] New Meteor Video

2009-10-04 Thread gracie
Wow. You can almost make out the reflection of the meteor in the skylights
on top of that building!

 Dear List,

I recently came across a new video of the Mason Dixon Meteor. Its
technically not really new, but it was new to me and never published
to my knowledge. This video was taken by the York Water Company. I
recently contacted Jeff Hines, the president of York Water, about
doing a calibrated stellar survey of his original video. Through the
course of the conversation he let me know about his 2nd video. Its not
as sensational as the first but it does show a shadow cast from a tall
flag pole as well as several other smaller shadows. If you are
interested in more info or the high res version please contact me off
 list.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite List Search

2009-10-02 Thread gracie
This is great! So much better than cluttering up my email with or scouring
the archives for content I want to return to.

Thank you!

 Hi List,

Sometimes it is difficult to find a message on the Met List Archive. At
 least for me... ;-)

So I created a simple search website:
 http://meteorite-list.sv-meteorites.com/

You can search from April 2004 to the current date.

 Enjoy!

Re: [meteorite-list] CAI and chondrules

2009-09-30 Thread gracie
Wow. Thanks for the heads up on that. As a new collector of meteorites
I've been routinely going to Wikipedia for information on things like the
the formation of chondrules and inclusions.

I own Norton's Field Guide and the recently published The Fallen Sky.
What are the other definitive books and/or websites should I be hitting up
for ACCURATE information?

Thanks in advance!
Gracie

Without answering your questions, don't pay any attention to the
Wikipedia articles on CAIs and chondrules. They are basically useless.
I began to work on them, starting with the chondrules, but it was taking
too much time, so they have languished.

Definitive answers to what caused the formation of CAIs and chondrules
 are not known.

The supernova gave the energy for the formation of CAI and for the
 collapse of the solar nebula?
Some other energy source, still unknow, 2 million years later molten
the material which formed the chondrules? But wich type of energy
 source?

 Is correct this time line?

 1) supernova
 2) few time later CAI formation
 3) at the same time collapse of nebula
 4) 2My later condrule formation
 5) at the same time proto-sun and proto-planetary formation
 6) ...

 Thanks a lot!

Re: [meteorite-list] Met List Flame Wars

2009-08-19 Thread gracie

I wonder how many people lurk on this list and pay close attention to who
acts like a professional at all times and who does not. I have no doubt
there are others like me who will not do business with anyone who does not
present a professional demeanor most or all of the time. (We all have our
 moments)

Count me in as a new lurker and cautious buyer for these very reasons
(Perhaps for every one who speaks up, there are a dozen who remain
silent.) For other newcomers like me who are baffled by the petty
bickering, I highly recommend the archives. There is a tremendous amount
of great information and history out there!
