Re: [meteorite-list] I have a problem with some rusting meteorites
Tim and Mike, In March of this year, I asked a similar question regarding meteorites, humidity and rusting. (I live in FL and it's tough on iron-heavy space rocks.) 1. I want to post a woefully belated thanks to Mike G, Linton, Rohr, Carl, Göran Axelsson, Marco Langbroek, Graham E, John Hendry, Jerry Flaherty and Darryl Pitt for being so incredibly helpful! (I hope I didn't forget anyone.) 2. If you search the Met List for my original subject heading (all or in part) you'll get some excellent answers that are just too numerous and complete to post in one email. My subject was: Meteorites and Humidity: Some Questions . . . Again, belated thanks Met List! Other than sonny's recommendation for rust prevention aren't there other methods / products short of building a humidity controlled room. Maybe some special salts, or a de-humidifier or something? One of the things I read online was having bright/warm lights in the case where you keep your meteorites. Any other ideas out there? [meteorite-list] Meteorites and Humidity: Some Questions . . .
Hello Met List! Quick background info: About six or eight months ago, I began a meteorite collection. (I am so completely hooked.) I store them primarily in Riker boxes and some in the jewel cases they arrived in. I live in north central Florida and except for my air conditioned home, I don't have the meteorites in any other climate controlled container or cabinet. I'm noticing a few of the irons (Miles especially) and one or two of the stony irons to appear a little rustier than when they arrived. I've read the good information here (http://www.meteoritemarket.com/preserv.htm), but still have some questions. Given my location, is it unreasonable for me to expect that simply purchasing (and consistently replacing) desiccant for each Riker box and jewel box will stave off rust? I love having my meteorites on display and the notion of squirreling them away in airtight tupperware makes me sad. That being said, I would prefer to protect them than have them ruined by humidity. There are a number of places I can purchase desiccant online. Is there a preferred or recommended location? Finally, is a kit like this worth my time and money? http://www.bhigr.com/store/product.php?productid=453 Thanks so much for your help! However, since Santa does not visit children of Muslim, Hindu, Jewish or Buddhist religions, this reduces the workload for Christmas night to 15% of the total, or 378 million (according to the Population Reference Bureau). At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that comes to 108 million homes, presuming that there is at least one good child in each dwelling. Santa has about 31 hours of Christmas to work with thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west which seems logical. This works out to 967.7 visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian household with a good child, Santa has about 1/1000th of a second to park the sleigh, hop out, jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left for him, get back up the chimney, jump into the sleigh and get on to the next house. Assuming that each of these 108 million stops is evenly distributed around the earth (which of course, we know to be false, but will accept for the purpose of our calculations), we are now talking about 0.78 miles per household; a total trip of 75.5 million miles, not counting bathroom stops or other breaks. This requires that Santa's sleigh moves at 650 miles per second--3000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man-made vehicle, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second, and conventional reindeer can run at best 30 miles per hour. The payload of the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium sized Lego set (two pounds), the sleigh is carrying over 500,000 tons, not counting Santa himself. On land a conventional reindeer can pull about 300 pounds. Even granting that the flying reindeer could pull ten times the normal amount, the job just cannot be done with eight or nine of them-- Santa would need 360,000 reindeer! This increases the payload, not counting the weight of the sleigh, another 54,000 tons or roughly seven times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth (the ship, not the monarch). 4.600,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance-- this would heat up the reindeer in the same fashion as spacecraft re-entering the earth's atmosphere (which may explain Rudolph's red nose). The lead pair of reindeer would absorb 14.3 quintillion joules of energy per second. In short, they would instantaneously vaporize exposing the reindeer behind them to the same friction and also creating deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team would vanish within 4.26 thousandths of a second, or right about the time Santa reached the fifth house on his trip. Not that it matters, however since Santa, as a result of accelerating from a dead stop to 650 miles per second in .001 seconds, would be subjected to centrifugal forces of 17,500 Gs. A 250 pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of the sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force, instantly crushing his bones and organs and reducing him to a quivering red-hot blob of goo. And yet, he returns year after year. Therefore, the rules of physics obviously don't apply to Santa and his yearly mission. Speaking as an engineer, this guy must know something about relativity that we have yet to discover. [meteorite-list] Fireball seen in Gainesville, FL
Hi List, I'm mostly a lurker, but just wanted to report that my husband just walked in the door excitedly telling me he saw a large greenish fireball over our house as he came up the driveway. I'm heading outside now so he can show me exactly which direction it came from and how long it lasted. Hopefully there will be further reports of this event! (So disappointed I didn't see it!) Re: [meteorite-list] Fireball seen in Gainesville, FL
Quick update: The fireball appeared below Aldebaran fairly low in the sky, and fell straight down to the south/southwest. He said the light was so bright it lit up the roof of our house and the surrounding area. I'm really hoping for more reports tomorrow. Whee! Re: [meteorite-list] New Meteor Video
Wow. You can almost make out the reflection of the meteor in the skylights on top of that building! Dear List, I recently came across a new video of the Mason Dixon Meteor. Its technically not really new, but it was new to me and never published to my knowledge. This video was taken by the York Water Company. I recently contacted Jeff Hines, the president of York Water, about doing a calibrated stellar survey of his original video. Through the course of the conversation he let me know about his 2nd video. Its not as sensational as the first but it does show a shadow cast from a tall flag pole as well as several other smaller shadows. If you are interested in more info or the high res version please contact me off list. http://www.mikesastrophotos.com/baltimore-pa-meteor/newly-acquired-meteor-video/ Thanks, Mike Hankey http://www.mikesastrophotos.com __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite List Search
This is great! So much better than cluttering up my email with or scouring the archives for content I want to return to. Thank you! Hi List, Sometimes it is difficult to find a message on the Met List Archive. At least for me... ;-) So I created a simple search website: http://meteorite-list.sv-meteorites.com/ You can search from April 2004 to the current date. Enjoy! Re: [meteorite-list] CAI and chondrules
Wow. Thanks for the heads up on that. As a new collector of meteorites I've been routinely going to Wikipedia for information on things like the the formation of chondrules and inclusions. I own Norton's Field Guide and the recently published The Fallen Sky. What are the other definitive books and/or websites should I be hitting up for ACCURATE information? Thanks in advance! Gracie Without answering your questions, don't pay any attention to the Wikipedia articles on CAIs and chondrules. They are basically useless. I began to work on them, starting with the chondrules, but it was taking too much time, so they have languished. Definitive answers to what caused the formation of CAIs and chondrules are not known. Jeff Francesco Moser wrote: Hello! I take a look on wikipedia about CAI and chondrules, but I have still some doubt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium-aluminium-rich_inclusion http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chondrule What prompted the formation of CAI? and what's caused the formation of chondurles??? Re: [meteorite-list] Met List Flame Wars
I wonder how many people lurk on this list and pay close attention to who acts like a professional at all times and who does not. I have no doubt there are others like me who will not do business with anyone who does not present a professional demeanor most or all of the time. (We all have our moments) Count me in as a new lurker and cautious buyer for these very reasons (Perhaps for every one who speaks up, there are a dozen who remain silent.) For other newcomers like me who are baffled by the petty bickering, I highly recommend the archives. There is a tremendous amount of great information and history out there!
