Re: [meteorite-list] Lunar eclipse recap

Hi Rob,

Yes, I was marveling at the sudden "appearance" of those close proximity
stars. Here west of Vegas it was a nice night and the skies were clear
with a great view. Definitely was worth burning the midnight oil for...!

Hi Daniel,

The show was great from southern California. Even more impressive to me
than the proximity of Mars was how close Spica was to the Moon -- less
than 2 degrees to the right. So close, in fact, that it was hard to
see Spica until the eclipse was well underway. Once the eclipse was
total, I could also see the dim, 5.2-magnitude star HIP 66098 (76
Virginis)
only 0.5 degrees from the upper limb of the Moon.

Hello All,

For those lucky enough to be able to see it, that Lunar eclipse last
night was fantastic, plus the added bonus of a very bright Mars nearby
made even more visible by the darkened sky...WOW!

I have an alert on a couple new ebay listings. Some "steelhorse1994"
fake displays from 2011-2012 are being resold by someone. Unfortunately,
he sold well over a 1000 of these and they will keep cropping up. It's
too bad ebay did not have the spine to retroactively alert everyone he
sold to. I dropped the seller a note but heard nothing back and the
listings are still active at the time of this writing. So, I also
reported it to ebay. Here are the links to the listings:

Re: [meteorite-list] steelhorse1994 fake rocks reappear as "Mars dust"

2014-02-11 Thread info
Hi All,

The ebay seller (sorens-stuff) revised their listing 2/10. Their
solution is to remove the incriminating photo of the steelhorse1984 Mars
display from their listing and to keep on selling without indicating the
source of their material so as to cover up the issue. I wrote them again
asking if this was the extent of their "solution". I suspect they would
deny still using the fake material if inquiries were made by ebay.

Hello All,

I received a fairly quick response from the seller tonight : "Hi, thank
you for the information! We will look into it asap and take the
appropriate measures! Thank you!"

Words are nice, actions are better! I will keep an eye on the listing,
it is still active at the moment. If need be I will put a call into
ebay.

Mike is right, their list of items for sale is a virtual land mine of
questionably documented collectibles. Maybe they are just na?ve, but
buying something fake on ebay that claims it is real and then reselling
bits and pieces of it without proper verification does not make it any
more real. It is probably just fortuitous that their current Moon dust
offering is derived from a legitimate meteorite kit.

Thanks for the heads-up Daniel! :)

This same seller is selling a wide variety of odd and rare artifacts.
This makes me question the authenticity of everything he offers.
Pieces of the Hindenberg? Metal from Apollo 11. Etc. If he's this
careless with his meteorite sources, then I wouldn't trust any of it.

[meteorite-list] steelhorse1994 fake rocks reappear as "Mars dust"

2014-02-08 Thread info
Hello all,

We have a listing on ebay selling "Mars dust specks" that are made from
pieces of the fake rocks out of the old displays of steelhorse1994:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260853112578#ht_1544wt_853
The second photo in the listing shows the unmistakable steelhorse1994
display.

I wrote the guy and informed him of the problem and suggested he stop
selling them and recall the ones he has sold. Apparently this seller
buys displays from various sources and breaks the rocks up into
microscopic tiny dust pieces(dust is right, you can barely see them) and
then resells them. He also has a current listing for Moon dust specks
but those are derived from a legitimate source. I don't know if he has
previously sold Moon specks that were from fake displays as well.
Steelhorse1994 is like a bad coin that keeps popping up.

Daniel

Hello All,

We have a new bogus Lunar listing on EBay:

A 7 gram Swedish knock-off SWE2003, imagine that! With an auction
starting at $1060 but no bids so far. I wrote the person seriously
questioning the listing, his credentials, and why there is no such
record of its classification on the Met. Bulletin. I also reported it to
ebay. Hopefully no one will buy it and when the auction ends it will be
the last we see of it. But seeing him also brag about it and a whole

[meteorite-list] Another ebay scammer

2013-12-29 Thread info
Just spotted these new listings in ebay under a search for Moon rocks: a
guy selling "PKG TEKTITE MAGIC MOON ROCKS". Here is a link to one of the
listings:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PKG-TEKTITE-MAGIC-MOON-ROCKS-outer-space-healing-stones-NOVELTY-BLACK-ROCK-NEW-/330941685693?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d0da95fbd.
There are several listings with different quantities being sold.

These are certainly not Moon rocks! Tektites? I doubt it, the experts
can chime in. Healing stones? oh please! I wrote the guy but do not
expect an answer based on some of his listed negative feedback. Here's
an example: "rabbits feet are infested with fleas and chains are rusted,
the seller won't contact me".

Another case of a scamming ebay seller trying to mislead the naïve
buyer that they are getting Moon rocks in the title, but cleverly does
not mention Moon rocks in the actual description. But he does go on
about tektites. I already reported all his listings to ebay with regards
to the Moon rock fraud. Some of you who have the expertise on tektites
may want to join in and do the same on that topic so ebay will be
compelled to ask him to either reword or remove his listings. I used:
report item link on the bottom right of the listing and then in the
popup menu: listing practices; compilation and informational items;
misleading or excessive keywords; then in the short description you can
add your two cents.

On the bright side, I hope everyone is having a fantastic Holiday
Season!

Best regards,
Daniel

[meteorite-list] Update: Fake Ebay Displays

2013-05-14 Thread info
Hello All,

It has been about a year since the ebay seller of the fake Moon & Mars
displays was stopped by Ebay from listing his items. They do get some
things right, though I wish they had a policy where they informed all
his past buyers. I am happy to report that since then he has not
attempted to list fakes again under the name steelhorse1994 or any other
username. Last year there were several instances where someone who
bought from him tried to resell the items on ebay, and those were
thwarted by myself or other keen eyes in the community who reported such
to ebay.

Here's to a great summer of hunting and collecting!

Some new pics of Mercury, compliments of NASA's Messenger spacecraft,
nice:
http://news.yahoo.com/photos/nasa-spacecraft-photographs-mercury-slideshow/

With all those craters, one would think there is a good amount of
Mercury rock floating around, and that there's a reasonable probability
that some of it has made its way to Earth. It will be interesting to see
if the continuing analysis of the possible candidate NWA 7325, with its
stunning green color, proves to be just so...

Re: [meteorite-list] artistic meteorite "rebirth" & AD

2013-02-08 Thread info
The artist in me appreciates the creative process she is pursuing, but
the scientist in me totally cringes that she used (destroyed) the
meteorite itself as her medium and completely transformed the meteorite
into something else: a metal sculpture. She could have done the same
thing with the silicon mold by pouring plain ole molten metal and

Thought you all might find this conceptual art project interesting:

Seems like a shame to me that she chose a naturally beautiful specimen

Sounds like the Chinese version of the U.S. Old Woman find.? Government
takes possession of it because they can and then it is all over for the
finders.? Offer them a tiny reward for a major find, let them decline
and then give them nothing but grief.? In other words, make up the laws
as you go without the citizens input.

History has a way of repeating itself.

I wonder what kind of reward the Smithsonian will offer for the first
American Lunar find when they take possession of it, perhaps $100.00, a
cup of coffee and a sausage?

Happy and Productive Hunting,

I like the auction style format where the buyer determines the market
price is the only reason I have stuck to eBay thus far.? It used to be a
self-supporting hobby that has turned into an expensive one, at least
for me.

All of these new eBay customer service rules have tied me down making
travel nearly impossible.? I wish it was like it was five years ago when
you could sell something on eBay for a fair price, make a reasonable
profit and travel at the same time.

I cannot stand regulations and eBay has too many new rules that only
serve to make a seller work twice as hard.

Dawn Journal
Dr. Marc Rayman
September 5, 2012

Dear Marvestalous Readers,

An interplanetary spaceship left Earth in 2007. Propelling itself
gently and patiently through the solar system with a blue-green
beam of xenon ions, it gradually spiraled away from the sun. It sailed
past Mars in 2009, its sights set on more distant and exotic
destinations. In July 2011, it gracefully and elegantly entered orbit
around the second most massive resident of the main asteroid belt,
Vesta. It spent more than 13 months there scrutinizing the gigantic
protoplanet with all of its sensors and maneuvering to different orbits
to optimize its investigations, making myriad marvelous discoveries.
After they traveled together around the sun for 685 million kilometers
(426 million miles), the ship left orbit in September 2012 and is now
headed for dwarf planet Ceres, the largest body between the sun and
Neptune not yet visited by a spacecraft. No other probe has ever been
capable of the amazing feats Dawn is performing, exploring two of the
largest uncharted worlds in the inner solar system.

The population of the main asteroid belt numbers in the millions. Vesta
is such a behemoth that Dawn has now single-handedly examined about
eight percent of the mass of the entire belt. And by the time it
finishes
at the colossus Ceres, it will have investigated around 40 percent.

The expedition to Vesta has produced riches beyond everyone's hopes.
With 31,000 photos, 20 million visible and infrared spectra, and
thousands
of hours of neutron spectra, gamma ray spectra, and gravity
measurements,
Dawn has revealed to humankind a unique and fascinating member of the
solar system family. More akin to Earth and the other terrestrial
planets
than to typical asteroids, Vesta is not just another chunk of rock. It
displays complex geology and even has a dense iron-nickel core, a
mantle,
and a crust. Its heavily cratered northern hemisphere tells the story of

more than 4.5 billion years of battering in the rough and tumble
asteroid
belt. Its southern hemisphere was wiped clean, resurfaced by an enormous

impact at least two billion years ago and an even greater collision one
billion years ago. These events excavated the 400-kilometer (250-mile)
Veneneia and 500-kilometer (310-mile) Rheasilvia basins. The larger
basin
has a mountain at the center that towers more than twice the height of
Mt. Everest; indeed, it soars higher than all but one of the mountains
known in the solar system. The impacts were so forceful, they nearly
destroyed Vesta. The fierce shock reverberated through the entire body
and left as scars an extraordinary network of vast troughs near the
equator, some hundreds of kilometers (miles) long and 15 kilometers
(10 miles) wide.

The powerful impacts liberated tremendous amounts of material, flinging
rocks far out into space, some of which eventually made it all the way
to Earth. It is astonishing that about six percent of the meteorites
found here came from Vesta. We have some meteorites from Mars, and we
have some meteorites from the moon, but we have far, far more that
originated in those impacts at Vesta, so distant in time and space.
Vesta, Mars, and the moon are the only celestial bodies identified as
the source of specific meteorites.

Scientists will spend years productively poring through Dawn's fabulous
findings and learning what secrets they hold about the dawn of the solar
system, and many more people will continue to marvel at the spectacular
sights of this alien world. But the emissary from Earth has completed
its assignment there and moved on. It has spent most of its time since
the previous log using its ion propulsion system to climb higher and
higher above Vesta. This departure spiral is the mirror image of the
approach spiral the robotic adventurer followed last year. The unique
method of entering and leaving orbit is one of the many intriguing
characteristics of a mission that uses ion propulsion. Without that
advanced technology, this ambitious deep space adventure would be
impossible.

As Dawn ascended, Vesta's gravitational grip grew weaker and weaker. At
some point along its spiral, the explorer was far enough and moving fast
enough that Vesta could no longer hold it in orbit. As smoothly and
tenderly as Vesta had taken

NASA's Curiosity Rover Caught in the Act of Landing
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
August 06, 2012

PASADENA, Calif. - An image from the High Resolution Imaging Science
Experiment (HiRISE) camera aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter
captured the Curiosity rover still connected to its 51-foot-wide (almost
16 meter) parachute as it descended towards its landing site at Gale
Crater.

"If HiRISE took the image one second before or one second after, we
probably would be looking at an empty Martian landscape," said Sarah
Milkovich, HiRISE investigation scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "When you consider that we have been
working on this sequence since March and had to upload commands to the
spacecraft about 72 hours prior to the image being taken, you begin to
realize how challenging this picture was to obtain."

The image of Curiosity on its parachute can be found at:
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/msl/multimedia/pia15978b.html

The image was taken while MRO was 211 miles (340 kilometers) away from
the parachuting rover. Curiosity and its rocket-propelled backpack,
contained within the conical-shaped back shell, had yet to be deployed.
At the time, Curiosity was about two miles (three kilometers) above the
Martian surface.

"Guess you could consider us the closest thing to paparazzi on Mars,"
said Milkovich. "We definitely caught NASA's newest celebrity in the
act."

Curiosity, NASA's latest contribution to the Martian landscape, landed
at 10:32 p.m. Aug. 5, PDT, (1:32 on Aug. 6, EDT) near the foot of a
mountain three miles tall inside Gale Crater, 96 miles in diameter.

In other Curiosity news, one part of the rover team at the JPL continues
to analyze the data from last night's landing while another continues to
prepare the one-ton mobile laboratory for its future explorations of
Gale Crater. One key assignment given to Curiosity for its first full
day on Mars is to raise its high-gain antenna. Using this antenna will
increase the data rate at which the rover can communicate directly with
Earth. The mission will use relays to orbiters as the primary method for
sending data home, because that method is much more energy-efficient for
the rover.

Curiosity carries 10 science instruments with a total mass 15 times as
large as the science payloads on the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity.
Some of the tools are the first of their kind on Mars, such as a
laser-firing instrument for checking rocks' elemental composition from a
distance. Later in the mission, the rover will use a drill and scoop at
the end of its robotic arm to gather soil and powdered samples of rock
interiors, then sieve and parcel out these samples into analytical
laboratory instruments inside the rover.

To handle this science toolkit, Curiosity is twice as long and five
times as heavy as Spirit or Opportunity. The Gale Crater landing site
places the rover within driving distance to layers of the crater's
interior mountain. Observations from orbit have identified clay and
sulfate minerals in the lower layers, indicating a wet history.

The mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in
Washington. The rover was designed, developed and assembled at JPL.

Hoax may have been a strong word, Phil, because it implies motive, but
you are right-on to flag it nonetheless. Sloppy and overzealous would be
the words that come to my mind. As a scientist, I was trained to be
neither. Clearly, they made a mistake, or overlooked something. That's
why you seek out collaboration. Of course they knew it would cause a
stir when they published it. They wanted to be the first to show such.
Egos. Unfortunately, it was very premature for them to jump out and make
a claim with such dramatic and sweeping implications without first
waiting for independent confirmation. The good news is, in the end the
subject was clarified by subsequent research.

This is why the recent Higgs Boson announcement was the result of two
completely independent teams coming to the same conclusion after very
extensive research. By the way, the media has in my mind been only
somewhat successful in explaning for lay people what the HB particle
discovery is and means. Here's my most simplified version of it for the
non-theoretical physical scientists (mostly everybody): the Higgs Boson
particle is what correlates energy to matter, it makes the = in the
E=MC*2 equation possible

This current news story is as unfortunate as the original NASA story
spin of
Wolf-Simon's article release two years ago. Hoax implies a deliberate
fabrication of evidence. There's no call here to insult the personal
integrity of the scientists for publishing their earlier experimental
observations on the Mono Lake arsenic tolerant bacteria. Also never
concluded in the original experiments would be that arsenate could
completely replace phophate, just that it might have been substituted
for
less than one percent of phosphorus at a cost. They weren't looking for
any
kind of attention themselves to create this a publicity stunt. Just over

zealot news media spun into action by an interesting preliminary report.

Looking forward to reading the actual article when available and new
studies
to follow.

Howard,

You're right, calling it a hoax may have been overstating my opinion.
But it
was definitely a publicity stunt. If you claim to have discovered a
completely new life form, unknown to science and possibly of alien
origin,
it's just good manners to wait until it's independently confirmed. They
jumped the gun with their premature announcement. As if they didn't know

that it would create a lot of hoopla and possibly mislead a lot of
people! I
don't know what their exact motives were, but announcing that you've
found a
living DNA chain with arsenic replacing phosphorus compounds before it's

been confirmed seems a little hoaxy to me. I'm no scientist, but I'm
still
annoyed by that whole cold fusion thing.

2012-07-09 Thread info
Interesting article, Phil.

It's always good to see that given a little time, collaborative science
works things out. Having a couple Biology degrees myself, I would have
been floored if it had been verified that the bacteria substituted
arsenic for phosporus in its DNA. It will be interesting to see if they
determine in follow up studies what the actual mechanism is by which the
bacteria mitigates the presence of the arsenic in its environment. As
the article mentions, due to their relative simple makeup, some bacteria
have the ability to adapt and survive in very inhospitable Earth
enviroments. There have been some inklings of it (nanobacteria of Allan
Hills 84001), but someday I think we will likely see broadly agreed upon
hard evidence for them in many non-terrestrial environments.

Turns out it was a bogus publicity stunt:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/journal-retreats-from-controversial-arsenic-paper/2012/07/08/gJQAFQb7WW_story.html?hpid=z3

Journal retreats from controversial arsenic paper

By Marc Kaufman, Updated: Sunday, July 8, 10:05 PMThe Washington Post
Two new studies of controversial research on a bacterium found in
California's
arsenic-rich Mono Lake led the journal Science on Sunday to say that the

2010 paper it published on the microbe was incorrect in some of its
major
findings.
The original research, which also had been highlighted by NASA, reported

that the bacterium could live in an environment with very high arsenic
and
very low phosphorus - one of the six elements known to be present in all

living things. It consequently raised the possibility of life forms now
or
previously on Earth that break what had been accepted as a universal
rule of
biology.

But two new studies of the bacterium, GFAJ-1, reported that it could not

grow without the presence of phosphorus. The ?papers also challenged the

original finding that small amounts of arsenic compounds had replaced
phosphorus compounds in some DNA, membranes and other biologically
central
parts of the organism.
"Contrary to an original report, the new research clearly shows that the

bacterium, GFAJ-1, cannot substitute arsenic for phosphorus to survive,"
the
journal concluded in a formal statement.
"The new research shows that GFAJ-1 does not break the long-held rules
of
life, contrary to how [lead author Felisa] Wolfe-Simon had interpreted
her
group's data."
Nonetheless, Science wrote that it would look with interest at further
research regarding the bacterium, which it called "an extraordinarily
resistant organism that should be of interest for further study,
particularly related to arsenic-tolerance mechanisms."
Wolfe-Simon, now on a NASA fellowship at the Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory, is collaborating with senior scientist John A. Tainer on
wide-ranging studies of the bacterium. In an interview Saturday,
Wolfe-Simon
and Tainer said that they had produced tentative results in the Berkeley
lab
almost identical to the original results at a U.S. Geological Survey
laboratory, and that they were busy finishing the research and preparing

another paper.
Tainer said the two new studies in Science may have come to different
results than theirs because of the methodologies used, the precision
used to
detect arsenates and the provenance of the cells. He said the authors of
the
two new papers "may well regret some of their statements" in the future.
"There are many reasons not to find things - I don't find my keys some
mornings," he said. "That doesn't mean they don't exist. The absence of
a
finding is not definitive."
Wolfe-Simon and her numerous collaborators had made samples of GFAJ-1
broadly available after her initial results caused a storm of
controversy,
but she and Tainer said they may have been contaminated or modified in
transit.
She said that all the researchers agreed that the bacterium survived in
extraordinarily high levels of usually toxic arsenic compounds but that
they
disagreed about whether the organism used the arsenic compound to grow
and
whether it had incorporated the arsenic into its biology.
"I think it's unclear whether this is the last word," ?Wolfe-Simon said.

"They're not finding something that could be there in a minor amount."
One of the new studies in Science was conducted by a team centered at
Princeton University that included Rosemary Redfield of the University
of
British Columbia. She was one of the first and most vocal critics of the

original Wolfe-Simon paper, and she said Sunday she was satisfied with
how
the process has played out.

[meteorite-list] Allende meteorite yields material previously unknown to science

2012-06-27 Thread info
Hi all,

Interesting news reported today from Caltech regarding research on the
1969 Allende meteorite:

"Scientists have discovered a new mineral embedded in a meteorite that
fell to Earth over 40 years ago, and it could be among the oldest
minerals, formed in the early days of our solar system. The mineral is a
type of titanium oxide and has been named panguite, after Pan Gu, the
giant from ancient Chinese mythology who established the world by
separating yin from yang to create the Earth and the sky."

RELEASE: 12-211

NASA SPACE LAUNCH SYSTEM CORE STAGE MOVES FROM CONCEPT TO DESIGN

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- The nation's space exploration program is taking a
critical step forward with a successful major technical review of the
core stage of the Space Launch System (SLS), the rocket that will
take astronauts farther into space than ever before.

The core stage is the heart of the heavy-lift launch vehicle. It will
stand more than 200 feet (61 meters) tall with a diameter of 27.5
feet (8.4 meters).

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., hosted a
comprehensive review. Engineers from NASA and The Boeing Co. of
Huntsville presented a full set of system requirements, design
concepts and production approaches to technical reviewers and the
independent review board.

"This meeting validates our design requirements for the core stage of
the nation's heavy-lift rocket and is the first major checkpoint for
our team," said Tony Lavoie, manager of the SLS Stages Element at
Marshall. "Getting to this point took a lot of hard work, and I'm
proud of the collaboration between NASA and our partners at Boeing.
Now that we have completed this review, we go from requirements to
real blueprints. We are right on track to deliver the core stage for
the SLS program."

The core stage will store liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen to feed
the rocket's four RS-25 engines, all of which will be former space
shuttle main engines for the first few flights. The SLS Program has
an inventory of 16 RS-25 flight engines that successfully operated
for the life of the Space Shuttle Program. Like the space shuttle,
SLS also will be powered initially by two solid rocket boosters on
the sides of the launch vehicle.

The SLS will launch NASA's Orion spacecraft and other payloads, and
provide an entirely new capability for human exploration beyond low
Earth orbit. Designed to be safe, affordable and flexible for crew
and cargo missions, the SLS will continue America's journey of
discovery and exploration to destinations including nearby asteroids,
Lagrange points, the moon and ultimately, Mars.

"This is a very exciting time for the country and NASA as important
achievements are made on the most advanced hardware ever designed for
human spaceflight," said William Gerstenmaier, associate
administrator for the Human Exploration Operations Mission
Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "The SLS will power a
new generation of exploration missions beyond low Earth orbit and the
moon, pushing the frontiers of discovery forward. The innovations
being made now, and the hardware being delivered and tested, are all
testaments to the ability of the U.S. aerospace workforce to make the
dream of deeper solar system exploration by humans a reality in our
lifetimes."

The first test flight of NASA's Space Launch System, which will
feature a configuration for a 77-ton (70-metric-ton) lift capacity,
is scheduled for 2017. As SLS evolves, a two-stage launch vehicle
configuration will provide a lift capability of 143 tons (130 metric
tons) to enable missions beyond low Earth orbit and support deep
space exploration.

Boeing is the prime contractor for the SLS core stage, including its
avionics. The core stage will be built at NASA's Michoud Assembly
Facility in New Orleans using state-of-the-art manufacturing
equipment. Marshall manages the SLS Program for the agency.

Across the SLS Program, swift progress is being made on several
elements. The J-2X upper-stage rocket engine, developed by Pratt &
Whitney Rocketdyne for the future two-stage SLS, is being tested at
Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. The prime contractor for the
five-segment solid rocket boosters, ATK of Brigham City, Utah, has
begun processing its first SLS hardware components in preparation for
an initial qualification test in 2013.

[meteorite-list] spaceterrain displays

2012-06-10 Thread info
Hi Brad, Mike and list,

Great work Mike on spotting those bad displays and Brad for responding
quickly. I just saw the post this morning. If it is not too late, Brad,
and you have not literally destroyed them, contact Maria Haas at IMCA,
they are still looking for samples of the Lunar versions to be sent off
to Dr. Korotev to further establish a data base about these fakes.

Similarly, if anyone else knows of some, I'm sure Maria would like to
hear from you...

Re: [meteorite-list] Fake moon and mars meteorite NWA's

2012-06-07 Thread info
Hi Rob,

Thanks for your note.

One of the problems with the steelhorse1994 fakes is the guy was for the
most part targeting lower end gift shoppers by pricing auctions at a
penny to start and ending up selling 25mg rocks in a nice display for an
average of $17. When I did the statistics on his average sale price, I
knew something was wrong. He couldn't have sold a 1000 displays and
stayed in business with that kind of pricing. On a good day, the cost of
just the meteorite sample that size exceeds $17. Then add in ebay fees,
paypal fees, material costs, shipping costs, etc. It didn't add up,
unless of course he was grabbing granite rocks from his backyard!

The other side of this ripoff coin is this: I had a customer tell me
recently that she and her son were at Knots Berry Farm last week where
they saw "genuine" moon & mars rock displays similar to the ones I sell,
and they wanted $400 for the pair! She and her 8 year old were thrilled
to find mine on ebay and a $350 difference.

Your point on being careful about what and from whom you buy is well
taken, especially at the collector level where bigger pieces and bigger
prices are involved. But, the average Jane and Joe gift shoppers were
perfect foils for this fraud, which is why we all have to be diligent
about policing what we see around us on in our marketplace.

Best regards,

Daniel

Hi list

I would like to thank everyone for this informative thread. I have not
bought any lunar/martian meteorites for quite a few years now but as the
owner of a decent collection of planetaries, bought from a small number
reputable dealers whom you will all know well that i(we) trust
implicitly, it's nice to be kept up to date on the frauds out there.

I display my modest collection frequently and often loan them out to
museums and i'm often asked the usual questions, "how do i know they're
real" and "can anyone buy them".

My advice has always been to do you're homework thoroughly before taking
any chances since you are paying a lot of money for not a lot of
material. Following this thread, I now know to give explicit warnings to
people and what to watch for.
So many thanks

Re: [meteorite-list] Fake moon and mars meteorite NWA's

2012-06-07 Thread info
Hi Mike and list,

As steelhorse1994 & spaceterrain4sale, he used Lunar NWA 4881, Lunar NWA
4734 & Martian NWA 4925. They were always packaged with the NWA lettered
on the front and American Meteorite Collectors Society called out on the
flip side. He used what I would call "commonly seen" moon or mars images
on the front AND back side.

Mike is right, some people don't want to think they were capable of
being scammed and respond negatively to the messenger. Like myself, many
of you were no doubt fascinated with space stuff as a kid, and still
are, and he sold a lot of these fakes during the 2011 Holiday season. No
doubt, there are a lot of little kids out there who don't have real
lunar or martian rocks. This is the kind of thing that makes me really
p**sed off and motivated me in this whole matter. He was clever, as they
usually are, in that he built up a top seller rating on ebay, and still
has it BTW! If you saw the recent episode of Pawn Stars, not all "silver
bars" are pure inside. Those silver bars he is selling now may be
"filled" with something not so precious.

And, yes, we need to be on the lookout for those displays resurfacing
from time to time. It is even possible he will repackage again, under a
new ebay username. Since they are fake, he could just change the NWA's
with a simple google search.

Not to worry, Mike. Since I sell legitimate displays on and off ebay, I
am ever vigilant on a weekly basis in observing any lunar or martian
material being sold on ebay.

I have to say Dr. Korotev was really accomodating, and for a person of
his stature to help out, that was fantastic. He gets a lot of email from
people with meteor-wrongs who think they have struck it rich, and he was
probably intrigue when I wrote him with the bizarro version that I was
convinced I had a fake...

Daniel

meteorite scam

Hi Daniel and List,

I really feel bad for the buyers of these bogus planetaries. Things
like this damage the integrity of the entire market. In the distant
past, I used to contact sellers and buyers of questionable specimens,
but I stopped doing it long ago. First, I hate being the bearer of
ill tidings. Secondly, people like to shoot the messenger and more
than once I received hostile responses.

Now that Daniel mentions it, I do recall seeing those "titles" for
lunar real estate for sale on eBay. I had no idea it was the same
scammer who ended up selling the fake planetaries. The phrase "buyer
beware" takes on all new meaning when shopping eBay. eBay is not
going to bend over backwards to police their own marketplace because
it's not in their financial best interests. They receive revenue in
form of listing and final value fees for every item sold, regardless
of whether it is genuine or not. And they are not going to willingly
reduce their own revenue in the name of integrity. Integrity in the
corporate world went out the window back in the 1980's and it hasn't
been seen since. The only reason they have stricter controls in place
for gemstones, precious metals, Tiffany items, etc, is because those
collectibles have larger collector demographics which are very
litigious. Under the threat of lawsuits, they have tightened their
controls over certain collectibles and commodities. We will not see
the same for meteorites because we are a small (by comparison) niche
market.

But, be careful what you wish for. If eBay were to enact tighter
controls over meteorite listings, it could be a huge hassle for many
legitimate sellers. Do we really want corporate stuffed-suits and
bureaucrats sticking their noses into the meteorite market? That
would be a double-edged sword and once that Pandora's box is opened,
there is no closing it. Is that enough cliches in one paragraph for
everyone? LOL.

>From an ethical standpoint, the best we can do is to mitigate the
damage that has been done by this bogus planetary affair. We can put
all of this out here on the record for all to see. All it takes is a
simple Google search (or Bing) to reveal the truth. Also, we must try
to remove these bogus specimens from the market as we encounter them.
The danger here is that someone will remove the bogus specimens from
their easily-identified containers and sell them in another form where
they are less easily recognized.

For the record (perhaps Daniel can help answer this), what NWA numbers
are "tainted" by these bogus displays? Luckily, the scammer appears
to have limited himself to certain NWA numbered Lunars and Martians.
These numbers must be treated with extra scrutiny from now on, until
these specimens are removed from the market.

Again, kudos to Daniel for doing the sleuth-work and Dr. Korotev for
donating his expertis

Dirk sent me a good suggestion, to determine the true identification of
the Moon, Mars Meteorite scam artist.

For those that want it, as follows:

EBAY Seller: steelhorse1994, aka spaceterrain4sale; John and Angela
Maurer, 1453 Sorento Circle, West Mellbourne Fl 32904

This is provided via paypal and the receipt for the sample I obtained in

Re: [meteorite-list] Ebay victims of fake moon and mars meteorite scam

2012-06-07 Thread info
I like Shawn's idea of some kind of coordinated effort to contact all
the victims of steelhorse1994's scam. This can be done by going to the
flake's ebay feedback list where the buyer username and what they bought
is clearly indicated. I believe Ebay has an anti-spam trigger that
limits multiple messages to 10 or so per day per user. As I indicated
before, ebay has no interest whatsoever in reaching out to the victims
of this injustice. In fact they did not boot him completely off ebay, he
is still selling other items like silver bars (are they real, who
knows?). People should contact ebay and demand he be removed altogether.
Do you think they will listen? His last rock sales were the first week
of May so the bulk of his over 1000 sales are past the 45 day ebay
protection window. Some of the victims may be able to get paypal or
their credit card company to do something. By the way, most of the time
he was starting the sales at a 1 penny auction and ending at very low
prices relative to the large size of the rock (the one I got was at
minimum 20-25 mg), which also was a tip off to me.

More specifics: steelhorse1994 sold his fake moon and mars displays from
about October 2011 to early May 2012. However, as best I can tell for
about a year before that (starting in October 2010 to Oct. 2011) under a
DIFFERENT username: "spaceterrain4sale" he was selling them. He still
has an ebay store but no items under that name and the feedback can be
viewed. And yes, at that time he was also selling deed titles to land on
the moon and mars and that dates back to Feb 2010. My theory is he got
in hot water with ebay about the deed title thing in Oct 2011 and that's
why he switched names and then only sold the rocks. It's so despicable!

I had already tried to get ebay to kick the guy off back in March based
on the bogus American Meteorite Collectors Society thing on his
displays, but they did not act. So, a lot of thanks go out to Dr.
Korotev who was willing to take the time to analyze the rock I sent him
and provide the hard science evidence.

Best regards,
Daniel

Re: [meteorite-list] Final report on analysis of fake martian meteorites sold on ebay, revisited

2012-06-06 Thread info
My apologies to all for not deleting the previous digest's postings when
I replied earlier today, which clogged up the digest...thanks to Elton
for pointing it out.

I had trouble myself finding my posting in all that, so I am reposting
it again:

As was previously reported in this forum last month, ebay seller
steelhorse1994 was dumping fake moon and mars rock displays on
unsuspecting buyers through ebay listings for over a year. My
involvement started a few months ago when I recognized the displays were
suspect and made it my mission to uncover the fraud. I obtained one of
these displays and solicited the assistance of Dr. Randy Korotev at
Washington University to analyze it with neutron activation. His initial
report to me last month indicated that it was NOT a rock from space and
was indeed terrestrial. I immediately contacted eBay. Two days later,
the fraud was no longer selling his fakes on eBay. There is still the
occasional ebay seller "reselling" some of these fakes, an unfortunate
repercussion of over 1000 bogus items dumped on eBay.

Be on the lookout. The clear tell for ALL of his fakes is to observe the
reverse display side image. It will say in big letters: "American
Meteorite Collectors Society", which of course is nonexistent,
"Authenicity Guaranteed". NOT.

I followed up with eBay and inquired if they were planning to contact
all the buyers who bought the fraudulent material. Their response was:
"Oh no, they would have to contact us, and within 45 days of the
purchase". Are you kidding me? How self-serving is that!

I have just received the final data analysis from Dr. Korotev regarding
the display that I sent him and have reproduced his conclusions below.
If anyone is interested in seeing the hard data (1 page, primarily
regarding the REE), drop me a note, and I will forward it to you.

Dear Mr. Noyes:

Here are the final INAA data on your fake martian meteorite.

There appear to be no published data for NWA 4925, but according to my
colleague Tony Irving, NWA 4925 is a "depleted, permafic olivine
shergottite," of which there are several, including SaU 005 and the new
martian fall Tissint. Your rock is nothing like any of them. It's got
the geochemical signatures of a terrestrial rock - high alkalis, low Cr,
granite-like REE pattern.

Re: [meteorite-list] International Meteorite Market Article

I agree with what Adam (and Mike) are saying. Dr. Harvey's over the top
analogy comparing collectors to drug dealers is unprofessional, totally
unnecessary, and certainly not helpful to meaningful cooperation between
scientists and collectors.

'“There is a market out there that treats these [meteorites] as
collectibles and curios, almost as though they were fine art or ancient
artifacts,” Dr. Harvey explains.'

Curio means: an unusual object; ancient means: really old. Well, if 500
million year-old magma ejected from the Martian surface that then took a
million years to find its way to the Earth's surface isn't an ancient,
collectible curio, what the heck is!

I agree with Adam 100%, and my comment to the article says as much.

I really wish writers would stick to subjects they actually know
something about. This article is nothing more than slander.

[meteorite-list] AD - TektiteInc.com Tektites ALL SOLD OUT and CLOSING the site. Thanks all.

2010-04-08 Thread info
Hi all,

Just wanted to say that all the Tektites/Rizalites on my site have been
sold out and that I will be shutting down the site in a few weeks time
once the leftovers are out the door. Getting real hard to find good
specimens these days...

The only specimens left for sale are the ones in my ebay shop now. These
will take a few more weeks to sell out and thats it!

Will be listing my ebay shop specimens at a low, low price so keep a look
out!

Would like to thank all those who have purchased from me in the past and
those who have helped me learn more about Meteorites and Tektites.

I have made many friends in the Meteorite world and hope to continue to
keep in touch with all of you.

Will always still be on the lookout for quality specimens to buy or trade!

[meteorite-list] AD - SALE 50% Off all Rizalites on TektiteInc.com SALE

2009-06-06 Thread info
Hi all,

Im having a 50% off Sale for all the Rizalites on my website to make room
for a new hobby of mine so please have a look. Im going to have this sale
on for 1 month.

Free shipping will not be included in this Sale. The breakdown of the
shipping charges are below:

Under 150g $8
Between 150g to 400g $12
Between 400g to 900g $28

Please note that I do not charge extra or charge a handling fee for my
shipping. This pricing is what Phil Post charges me.

However, FedEx is offering a special for my business' company account
which means I can send specimens that weigh in between 400grams - 900grams
for just a couple bucks more than the $28 cost for Air Mail but I will
shoulder this cost so that you receive your package a lot faster than my
regular Air Mail postage.

Thanks for looking.

[meteorite-list] Australite Hunting Pictures and eBay AD

2008-06-20 Thread info
Hello all,

Please see the link below for some nice pictures of hunting for
Australites in the Western Australian Gold fields.

http://tektiteinc.com under the Perth Museum link.

Aubrey Whymark recently acquired an Australite collection from a Western
Australian prospector and these pictures show where most of his
Australites were found.

Please contact Aubrey if you would like a copy of these pictures or
purchase some of his Tektites. He recently bought 120 kilograms of
Rizalites off me so please give him a buzz if you’re interested. His
website link is below.

http://www.tektites.co.uk/index.html

Please also see my offerings on eBay! Thanks and enjoy the pictures.

Re: [meteorite-list] Am I missing something here?

2008-06-16 Thread info
Martin, others,

as for the "unclassified CO3" that was indeed the wrong term. I was referring
to a CO3 type chondrite whose classification has not yet reached official
status. I sincerely apologize for causing "confused disbelief".

Jeff Grossman wrote:

Dear Martin and list,

I can't comment on the CO3 oxymoron, but I am the inventor of the
type 3.05 classification, so I can comment on that.

As we have studied type 3 chondrites over the last 30 years,
especially ordinary and CO chondrites, we have been gradually
refining the 1967 Van Schmus and Wood classification scheme. In
1980, we realized that type 3 chondrites alone showed as great a
range of metamorphic effects as type 4-6 did, so Sears and coworkers
including me, proposed subdividing type 3 into types 3.0-3.9. In
2005, Grossman and Brearley (2005) described a similar wide range of
metamorphic effects just between types 3.0 and 3.2 and subdivided
this into 3.00-3.15 by steps of 0.05. Since then, we have even begun
to recognize different levels of metamorphic heating between types
3.00 and 3.05, and so we find Acfer 094 at type 3.00, Semarkona at
type 3.01, ALHA77307 at type 3.03 (e.g., Bonal et al. 2007; Kimura,
Grossman and Weisberg, 2008, MAPS in press).

These differences are quite real and important. In type 3.05
ordinary chondrites, the olivine in chondrules has begun to decompose
from its high-temperature state, the matrix chemistry is quite
different, especially for sulfur, and the metal has greatly changed
in structure and composition (all compared to the much, much rarer
type 3.00-3.01 chondrites). Although these numbers do not tell you
the peak metamorphic temperature, they are very useful in describing
the various transitions that occur during metamorphic heating.

The fact that there may be many possible combinations of chemical
group and petrologic type is a good thing, although there certainly
aren't 1500. Basically, current usage is 3.00-3.04 (5 categories),
3.05-3.15 (3 categories), 3.2-3.9 (8 catagories), 4-7 (4 categories)
= 20 categories. I suppose if you double this for classifiers who
can't make up their minds, you get ~40 categories, times 3 chondrite
groups plus 2 transitional groups = ~200 total combinations.

Thanks for all the comments. Forgot to mention to all the Mineral

Graham, if your looking for somewhere to upload your museum pics then you
should try Aubrey Whymark's site where there is a section dedicated to

2008-03-04 Thread info
Elton, others,

in this case, and regarding the thoroughly curated and painstakingly documented
collection Dave keeps, I would rather trust the owner's judgement instead of
your photo interpretation skills - however visionary they may be.

Besides there is currently no need to defend Dave as you have not provided a
single point why the stone pictured should not be oriented. You may consider
this in your concept of science.

just my two cents

good question, I'd say it was either the article on the Tunguska event, the

Re: [meteorite-list] intriguing Question

2008-01-11 Thread info
Pat, Sterling, others,

moving or resting sand is not conserving meteorites but is one of the major
threats to the preservation of meteorites. Most if not all meteorite
aggregation fields in the Sahara have one thing in common: they are free of
sand. In fact they are shielded against the sandflow by ridges or mountain
chains, e.g. the Djebel al Aswad is bordering the east of the Dar Al Ghani.

These natural barriers that prevent the sand from entering certain areas are
commonly situated in the east or northeast of the aggregation field. And the
winds on the African continent tend to blow from the northeast during the whole
year since at least ten thousand years.

The surface horizons of the meteorite concentration areas such as the HAH and
the DAG are mostly composed of pebbles and top soil and are free of quartz
sand.

Terrestrial lifetimes of meteorites decrease as soon as quartz sand is involved
due to the quick mechanical abrasion.

It is true that meteorites found in aggregation areas in the Sahara were
sedimented and protected by soils from wheathering before the recent wind
erosion uncovered them. This process started about 12 - 10,000 years ago and
continues until present. But these sediments that are being eroded today were
not composed of quartz sand.

There is a good paper on the mechanisms responsible for meteorite concentration
in the dense aggregation areas by Schlueter et al. :

J. Schlüter et al. (2002) The Dar al Gani meteorite field, Meteoritics &
Planetary Science 37, 1079-1093.

I fully second Sterling's post on this subject but take the liberty to add,
that desertification in the Sahara may not be such an irreversible process as
suggested.

A single acacia growing on a hammadah or on an erg-surface accumulates soil in
a radius of 25 - 40 meters. This soil layer can reach up to 1 m height during
the lifetime of the plant. A climate change involving a noticeable growth of
humidity, triggerd by a change of e.g. ocean currents, would soon lead to the
spreading of Savannah vegetation into the Saharan voids.

For those interested I have transcribed and translated a 1895 letter by Henry
A. Ward to Emil Cohen in which the latter suggests a trade US versus European
meteorites from the Greifswald collection.

If you ever wanted to know how to engineer a smooth trade with an institutional
collection old school style then this is a must read:

Re: [meteorite-list] Has Mali Been Classified?

2007-12-19 Thread info
Dean, others,

the classification of the Mali material is almost completed. NomCom submission
will follow soon. I provided the classifying lab with samples of the commom
lithology as well as with samples of the IMB lithologies. I do already have the
preliminary data and will provide them as soon as the submission is official.

I may have missed it in all of the postings but is
there a classification?
I just got 9 kilos of the stuff (So will have a sale
posting later today or tomorrow) and this stuff is
georgous. Just look at this 1785 gram Mali:

Re: [meteorite-list] 2008 Meteorite Calender

2007-11-23 Thread info
Hi all,

I'm just going through my emails and was a bit shocked at the interest in the
calender. I didn't think it would be that popular! ;-)

So I thought I'd answer some questions to all. I wanted a meteorite calender
for 2008 and obviously didn't want to have thousands printed up. So I used
CafePress.com. For those of you who aren't familiar with that website, it is a
third-party site which prints up almost everything you can think of from
apparel, merchandise and yes... even calenders! ;-)

They handle absolutely everything! When an item is ordered they take payment,
print it up and ship it. Quite remarkable actually given the small individual
nature of each order. So the sales are completely out of my hands and all
shipping costs etc will need to be checked for the relevant country on the
website. They were quite reasonably priced to Australia and it was very quick
and also well packaged.

If you have any questions, please email me off-list and I'll do the best I can
to help. And for those of you asking about 2009... let's just wait and see! ;-)

Cheers,

Jeff

Re: [meteorite-list] Canadian Meteorites

2007-11-13 Thread info
Hi Jeff, others,

you may contact the University of Calgary. They are part of the Prairie
Meteorite Search program and have been quite succesful in recovering and
identifying new meteorites in the past 10 years:

Media contact:
Grady Semmens
University of Calgary, media relations
Phone: (403) 220-7722
Cell: (403) 651-2515
Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And you may also try the Royal Alberta Museum. They have published a catalog on
Canadian Meteorites in 1984 and I suppose they still continue the national
meteorite inventory:

http://www.geo.ucalgary.ca/cdnmeteorites/

For any general requests on meteorite related issues you may refer to the
Geological Survey of Canada:

http://gsc.nrcan.gc.ca/meteor/index_e.php

I am sure our Canadian list members will be able to fill any gaps.

Best regards

Hi all,

Can anyone point me in the direction of who is studying Canadian meteorites
these days? (i.e. university, museum, etc) I know there has been a lot of
activity there over the past few years and would like to know where to point
Canadians with potential meteorites.

Thanks,

Re: [meteorite-list] Scalecube Family

2007-11-08 Thread info
sorry, forgot the 2nd link

thanks Mike,

that's quite interesting. They must have switched their reference scale
somewhere in the late seventies. There are a number of later ANSMET photos from
the eighties that already show 1cm cubes.

For example here with Mac Alpine Hills 88104 and MAC 88105:

http://www.meteorites.wustl.edu/lunar/stones/mac88105.htm

or here as early as 1981 with ALH 81005:

http://www.meteorites.wustl.edu/lunar/stones/alha81005.htm

Seems strange to me that they switched from inch to cm. That would make
comparing of earlier and later documentation quite disturbing.

Thanks for answering & best regards

Svend

Hello Svend,

NASA used the 1 inch cube in the Lunar Receiving Lab for photographic
reference of all Apollo lunar samples. At the time, it was referred to as a
'Scale Block.' I believe this is the only time the 1 inch cube was employed
anywhere in the world. In the LRL, centimeters would be referenced on the
specimen 'counter' only.

Here is a photo of the 1 inch cube in the LRL circa 1970:

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-11/877141/LRL-scaleblock.jpg

The 1 inch cube was fabricated in a machine shop next to the LRL prior to
Apollo 11. Later, the vertical tick mark would be added. I believe they were
designed by the gentlemen who designed all of the LRL tools (I have his name
here somewhere).

It is unclear at what point the CM cubes were first employed, but I believe
it was around 1975-1977 when ANSMET began collecting meteorites from
Antarctica.

I believe the 1 inch LRL cubes are the first cubes ever produced.

Thanks for the question!

Cheers,

Dear Mike,
when or where did NASA use a 1 inch cube? I am quite sure all their
meteorite documentation use the metric sytem with 1 cm cubes.

[meteorite-list] 34g Millbillillie and historic Texas fall - AD

2007-10-26 Thread info
in order to refinance some past acquisitions that turned out to be much more
cost-intensive than expected we would like to point you to a selection of
meteorites currently uploaded for auction.

Among them a glossy crusted 34gm Millbillilie which I really regret to let go.
But I am sure someone alse will enjoy the pleasure of curating this specimen as
much as I did.

The 11gm slice of the Kendleton meteorite comes with a large size reprint of
"La Tribuna Illustrata" cover from May 21st 1939. The watercolored drawing done
by artist Vittorio Pisani shows a Houston street scene whith a crowd terrified
by the spectacular fireball of the Kendleton bolide traversing the sky. Both
the contemporary magazine cover and the meteorite itself make a museum grade
display unit:
