[meteorite-list] Moss, Norway meteorite laws and news

2006-08-15 Thread meteoritehunter
Hi everyone, I am in Chigcago, on my way home after a travel day from hell with
stops in the UK and the chaos at the airports there. My advice, AVOID THE UK at
all costs right now. Pretty much strip searches, plastic baggie with passport
and money was all I could carry on, overflowing bins of goodies taken from
people, thousands of bags on the ground sitting in the rain, endless lines and
no-one seemed to have a clue what to do.
My bags made is somehow, and I now have the Moss meteorites safely in my hands
again, it was hard to sleep wondering if some airport lackey had deemed them as
dangerous and tossed them in the incinerator!

Now on to this Norwegian article condemning myself and my fellow meteorite
hunters. I am dissapointed in reading it, since I had a meeting with the people
from the National museum regarding the laws and was told that I was welcome to
take anything I found or bought, since Norway had no law against it. Now it
seems, that while true, they did not want to cooperate hunting with me as they
suggested, but rather were just gathering information to use in harrasing me. I
searched for 8 days in Moss, and never once ran into a scientists, museum
curator, or any other official out hunting meteorites in the forest,
mosquito-infested bogs, or streets of Moss. I met the museum people at my hotel
for two hours, then they promtly took a bus back to Oslo. I guess hunting
meteorites is not their forte, just complaining about those of us who save them
from destruction and preserve them.
The piece that Morten Bilet and I found was in a parking area at a large
factory. Many pieces had been run over and crushed into grey piles of dust by
the time we discovered it and saved over 800 grams of extremely rare material
from further destruction. Now I am called a thief for legally removing it from
Norway. I have already submitted pieces for classification, and the thin
sections are being made and we will have perhaps preliminary classification by
the end of the month. I have museums around the world already slated for
pieces, and collectors as well. There is enough material for both the museums
in Norway, the scientific world, and the private collection community to share.
I am proud of what I do, the risks I take, and the time and energy I spend
chasing these falls. Until I see legions of scientists out there doing it
beside me, I know who is the one who provides them with their study material,
and who saves the meteorites from destruction or loss. If Morten and I had not
found our specimen when we did, it would be 800 grams of grey mud right now,
not a pristine meteorite already in the lab!

I think Strope got it right, it is over 3100.00 grams. Exaughsted from another
day of Muonionalusta hunting. Out of 7 teams hunting today, there was only one
10 kilogram meteorite found. This area is odd, some days are great, some
produce nothing.

WOW, It looks like Jim Strope is the winner! I doubt more will be found at this
point, almost a month after the fall. The only hope is more roof damage or whne
the farmers cut their fields soon. I guess I have to give Jim a nice piece of
my Moss meteorite since he outguessed us all almost to the gram.

[meteorite-list] Muonionalusta, Sweden Report

2006-08-09 Thread meteoritehunter
Hi everyone, we finally got some internet access here in Sweden, for the last
10 days I have been driving every other day to Finland to check emails, now I
should have daily access until I leave for home.
Well, today was my 8th day hunting, and I suppose you all saw the email that I
found a 47 kilogram iron on my birthday, August 4th. Since then, Robert Ward
and I have been searching hard for days with no success. Well, today we changed
that up a bit. I found a 25 kilogram regmaglypted piece after an hour of
searching this afternoon. Robert then found an 8 kilogram piece a little later.
Then he got a weak signal with the 2x2 meter coil and no signal with the
Minelab, so we knew he had a deep one. We dug for nearly two hours in glacial
till, removing large rocks of at least 40 and 50 kilos, then found the
meteorite at 1.6 meter deep. We thought for sure it would be a large one, but
alas, he found a beautiful 4 kilogram Muonionalusta shaped just like a shoe!
Well, I have all of tomorrow to search, then Friday driving half the
day to ship my pieces as air cargo, then back for an afternoon of hunting, then
out of here on Saturday. Monday night I will be home at last, free from the
knats and mosquitos that have surely sucked a pint or two of blood from me!
This has certainly been an interesting 3 weeks in the meteorite world.

What do you mean? I have been posting for a week that I have over 350 grams of
this meteorite which will soon be for sale. Or do you mean the roof smasher
piece? I for one, am glad that a stone of such beauty will remain intact, and
not be smashed up for sale on ebay.

[meteorite-list] WOW, all hell is breaking loose in meteorite world!

2006-08-01 Thread meteoritehunter
Dang, what a note to see that a new fall has occured in India! I am now in
Finland, on my way back to Sweden to hunt Muonionalusta. By this time tomorrow,
I plan to have a pile of irons, a bag full of CC, and be making plans for India
trip as well!
I have sent specimens of the Moss Norway fall to a top scientist in the USA to
work on, so we might have an idea soon. I have many fragments as does Morten
Bilet. It will be up for sale in a few weeks, but there is not much to offer as
most fragments are small, around 1 or 2 grams, but we have some larger ones. I
will likely be offering my larger pieces to Museums in trade.
I may well be back in Moss, Norway in a few days, but the Sweden trip was
planned and we would have lost our plane tickets if we didnt go today.

[meteorite-list] Norway CO3 Fall

2006-07-28 Thread meteoritehunter
Time for another meteorite report from Norway.
Well, we lost one team member as Bob Haag bugged out and flew back to Tucson
today. We have been wlaking, hiking, swimming, and driving all over the fall
area with still no luck. This area is awful for meteorite hunting. We know
another piece was found but no information.
We have a feature article coming out tomorrow in the regional newspaper, and
Haag, Karl, Ward, and myself were on the Norway national news last night. It
should drum up some information. The locals are also beggining to come home
from vacations, so I expect some more homes and gardens were hit by falling
stars!
I expect so spend until Tuesday here, then it is on to Sweden for some serious
Muonionalusta digging! So as it stands, the newest meteorite fall is a tough
nut to crack and not something that will be flooding the market anytime soon.

I think that between Haag, myself, Rainer Bartochewitz (who classifies
meteorite) and the others, we have a pretty good handle on the simple fact that
it is a carbonaceous chondrite. The CO3´s are pretty distinct, so I think this
one is in the bag as a CO3. But of course, only the final classification will
confirm for all.
Due to a vehicle problem, part of my day today will be spent in repair mode.

[meteorite-list] NORWAY meteorite hunt

2006-07-25 Thread meteoritehunter
Hi everyone.
Well, it is 12:24 am here in Moss Norway, and I just came up from some heavy
drinking with a heck of a batch of meteorite hunters. We have Robert Ward,
Robert Haag, and myself representing the USA. Moritz Karl, Alexander Gehler,
Rainer Bartowtzewich (sp?) and Thomas Kurtz from Germany here tonight. WE saw
many others today and yesterday though, even Poland was well represented. None
from France, or Austria, or the UK though.
Now, on to the meteorite! It IS A CO, Carbonaceous. NO DOUBT unless
it gets some wierd exception in classification. So I was right, as were many
others who guessed CO2 or CO3. It is a meteorite that will take your breath
away! It also had the misfortune of falling in one of the worst imaginable
places for searching! This area is of course, absolutely beautiful, fjords,
trees, endless berrys to eat like strawberrys, blueberrys, and raspberrys, lots
of tall, blonde women, and it is not 400,000 degrees like Tucson right now.
What is wrong is that it is high growing season, so every flat surface is being
farmed with full grown wheat, barley, peas, cabbage, etc. Every other surface
is extremely heavy forest with deep layers of moss that you sink in, lakes,
swamps, or fjords full of cruise ships. Their is absolutely no place to easily
search other than a few parks and shopping centers and industrial sites.
>From the siye of the fireball, it is certain that there are many pieces, but
>highly unlikely that much will be found other than by locals in their yards,
>and most locals are on vacation and not here.
So to end so that I can get some sleep for the first time in 3 days, there is
little news to report so far other than Norway got lucky with a fabulous new
CC. Now it is time to feed the mosquitoes while I sleep for the few hours of
darkness there is in this part of the world at this time of the year.

PS, we only found on Glorieta yesterday, we got caught up on top of a mountain

hiding from lightning bolts, and then slip-sliding back down the mountain in

I am doing a photo shoot for Southwest Airlines Magazine, where in August they
will have a feature article about me and meteorite hunting. One of the hunting
photos from today may actually make the cover shot. This should be a nice boost
to meteorite hunting, since the magazine is in every seat on every Southwest
flight for a month, that is a perfect, captive audience to read about something
they normally would not ever see.
Anyway, I am just excited for having found some nice pallasite individuals
today.

[meteorite-list] Leaving the country for some weeks.

2006-04-18 Thread meteoritehunter
Hi everyone, I am leaving the country again on Thursday, and will be gone at
least two weeks, perhaps more. Anyone in Europe who wants to buy anything, I
can ship on Friday from Europe so please let me know by Wednesday.

On the new Morocco fall; I do not question why Morocco is so blessed by the
meteorite god, I embrace it. There is no doubts as to the authenticity of
Benguerir (in many newspapers and reported from Marrakech and other places.
Benguerir was also reported in news in Morocco. Oum Dreyga was reported and
recovered in a hevily military zone, so much more difficult for me or anyone
else to operate in the zone.

I am not sure why Matteo cant handle the facts, but they are crystal clear.
For the reason why Egypt, or Mauritania might not get so many recovered falls,
well, Morocco is well settled all over the country, Egypt and Mauritania are
very sparsely settled, with people all concentrated in urban areas, so any
falls outside those areas have virtually no chance of recovery.

Re: [meteorite-list] Fw: new fall

2006-04-17 Thread meteoritehunter
Perhaps when you use common sense, you might understand the cause for so many
witnessed recovered falls in Morocco.
It is a desert, so searching is not difficult.
It is almost always clear, so most falls would be seen by someone.
It is a very hot country, so the culture there means people are outside well
into the nighttime where in most western nations, most people are inside
staring at their televisions come nighttime.
It is a country where almost everyone has heard about meteorites and they
equate the fall with $$$.
Just as many meteorites are falling elsewhere but people don't report it
because it is just another event.

Why do that, they are paired pieces, some of the Oman meteorites for example,
20 stones were found, they are all numbered, but not different meteorites.
There are 38 seperate unpaired lunar meteorites. Hell, I have about 10,000 gao

Steve, come on now, if you can use a computer, you can use Microsoft Word or

a specimen card. I print them by the thousands, it takes 5 minutes to make a

Re: [meteorite-list] Fukang meteorite

2006-01-07 Thread meteoritehunter
Yes Matt, I understand, but you cant just make it so simple as well. We all
know that some Brahin is crap, some is superb, same with Brenham. Yet I have
never seen Esquel rust, nor Seymchan, nor Glorietta.
This comes from the fact that people have been touting how nice Fukang is (and
I agree, it is a beautiful meteorite with superb large crystals) yet the fact
that I know some people who bought pieces last year from Kilgore, that it is
all rusting. Now when we try to discuss that fact, several people have been
emailing and calling me to complain that I should not say that if I dont have
any. I find that terrible, it seems that people want to sell it knowing full
well that the meteorite they are charging $20 or $25 gram for might be a
serious problem ruster.
Now, people who sell Brahin or Brenham know it may rust, this the very low
price for that danger built into the cheap price. But Fukang commands an Imilac
or Esquel piece, neither of which are problem meteorites. I find that to be a
risk to the customers/collectors that I am here to serve. I will sell you a
Brahin, but you know beforehand that it could rust to nothing. It seems that
most dealers are trying to avoid that fact with the super-expensive Fukang.
This is my point.

Then like Brenham or Brahin, "you pays your money and you takes your chances"?
Brenham and Brahin cost like 90% less than Fukang, so paying $1 or $2 gram and
losing it is not like spending $20 or $25 gram on Fukang and not having a clue
where your piece came from. How is a buyer going to know if it came from the
center or the upper left quarter 4 centimers from the crust/rust surface? They
wont know, until either it stays fine or rusts into nothing, worth nothing.

That tells me that it is a dangerous, unstable meteorite not worth buying and
spending thousands of $$$ to take the risk of it melting into a pile of nearly
worthless olivine crystals. I will take Esquel, Seymchan, or Imilac any day,
with no risk involved.

Re: [meteorite-list] Fukang meteorite

Please clarify Ken, you say the Fukang specimen is very nice, and then you say
you are watching it rust everywhere. Those two statements are not compatible.
Either it is nice, or it is a rusting piece of crap. Meteorites that rust on me
are never considered nice.

[meteorite-list] Munich notes

2005-10-30 Thread meteoritehunter
Hi everyone,

After a hectic two days of perusing the massive Munich show, it is finally
over, and I will be on my way home tomorrow with a stop in Paris. The weather
here has been incredible, over 70 degrees and not a cloud in the sky the last
two days! Very abnormal for Germany at the end of October.
The show was interesting, a lot of people who usually set up were not here.
Some things of note, the Moroccans has virtually NO meteorites, compared to
last year, there was like 10% what they used to have. Also there was a lot of
the ´Fuking` Pallasite from China. It was being offered at less than 10Euros a
gram in large chunks, I saw pieces from 100 grams to 2 kilos. Apparently the
buyers have divided the massive pallasite up and are now going to flood the
market. Looks like a good buying opportunity when the price collapses. It is
beautiful stuff, but with over 900 kilos, coming on the market, we know where
this goes.

There were ZERO large gibeons or Sikhotes, except a couple at Erich Haiderer´s
always full table. Moritz again had the best display of rare material, with
Martian, Lunar, Pallasite, and nice irons from Aussie museum trades. Hans had
the usual rally nice Campos, and Karl Sprich many nice Gibeon pieces cut into
spheres and cubes.

Moldavites are everywhere.

I may have broken a planetary record in Morocco, so get your pennies rolled and
wait for the news.

Re: [meteorite-list] Scam Alert

This is q very common and old scam.
If something seems odd, strange, out of place, or illegal, it probably is.
Usually the scam involves the person wanting you to keep extra money, and only
sending pqrt to them, that is to get you to overlook the facts and play on your
greed so you quickly cash the check and send them money.

What do you mean not classified yet. It is classified, and is in the new Meteoritical
Bulletin. I arranged Dr Bunch of NAU to work on it, which he did along with Rhian

[meteorite-list] From the strewnfield of the newest meteorite fall.............

2004-05-23 Thread meteoritehunter
Hi everyone, I am writing from the strewnfield of the newest meteorite fall on Earth,
aproaching 36 hours old right now. Not many people know about it, but I do, I am here
now. I wonder if it will be public soon? It seems that only me and a very small
handfull of people know about it even though it is in the USA. I was hunting with
several famous meteorite hunters all day today and will be again monday.
More info from me when I decide to let the other so-called meteorite hunters in on the
secret or it breaks on the list.
Anyway, lots of fun from the strewnfields.
Mike Farmer
Beautiful fireball videos of this one.
Please do not call me until I write the list back, I am really busy. this will likely
be the only email for a day or two, as you all know, this is a busy time at the
beginning of a new fall.

See Adam, that is the entire problem as I see it. We were in the field, 10,000 miles

there as does ERIC. WE WERE THERE, you never went there. So please dont try to tell us

Re: [meteorite-list] An insight to Amgala and other recent falls

2004-03-01 Thread meteoritehunter
gotta answer a few points Adam,
1. I "destroyed" Thuathe? I got almost 20 kilograms from the locals, paid them a FAIR
price unlike Mr Ronnie McKenzie who was happy to pay then one CENT per gram. I sold
for $6.00 to $8 gram, so Im not sure how that is "destroying" the price. Perhaps you
can clarify that one for me?
Did you not hand me the paperwork for it? Tell us all please if I somehow "stole" it
from you. I was offended by your partners wife, so instead of buying from you, I went
and got it myself. Again, I fail to see the problem.

2. Bensour, I got over 25 kilos of that fall. I was at the tucson show when it fell, I
never said or implied that I was the first, Dean Bessey posted it for sale if I recall
before anyone. you seem to imply that I "destroyed" Bensour by selling at a loss. No
Adam, I think I cost myself alot of money, and made some EXTREMELY happy collectors
and museums. you seem to think that collectors want to pay top dollar? Again, I fail
to see the logic in that post. I got a meteorite, had a spat with Bessy, and sold
cheap to make a point. The point was made I belive. So I guess a few dealers were not
happy. I am not here to please other dealers, only my customers and myself.

3. On this fall, fine, so be it, I did not know you had it, have been busy in the
field in Oman and elswhere, while you sit at home getting DHL packages, so since you
did get it first, my hat is off to you, congratulations, I know you like to play
junior scientist, so go for it. I never said I was the only one on this, I announced
it when I got it in my hands, if that broke open your little secret, well, I guess you
should have coordinated with me on that.
And I did not say you made up anything to trump me, however, it would not be the first
time that someone has posted that they have tons of material when they do not.
Casper used to do that all the time, he did it with NWA 482 and many other meteorites.
I dont think that asking to see the material is a problem if you have it? If that is a
problem, tell us what it is?

4. why would I damage the market? I want o offer my customers a good price while
making a profit for myself and my partners, that is the crux of American business. Are
you saying I should mark it up many more times than I paid? What price do you want
Adam, $100 gram, $50 gram?

The things you said Adam were wrong, I have answered them point by point logically.
I would think the collectors on this list want good meteorites at the best possible
prices. If you are telling me that they are angry that I sold Bensour cheap, damn, I
had better raise my prices accross the board and make everyone happy again. Ill bet
that will raise some smiles from my customers.

Adam, sorry I "stumbled" onto your fall. This was my 30th COUNT them 30 trips to
Morocco. I think you have been ONE time?

Well, without getting into the politics of it, it is the same country, no borders,
same money, all maps show it, I know about Morocco taking it over but it is what it
is. Until someone frees it, it is now Morocco.

No, I think that for you to speak up, and participate in this list, you should state
your full name. That is only polite you know. Without a full name, who knows who you
are? I have been on this list for almost 7 years, never heard of you. If you don't

Hi again, it has been an extremely busy Tucson show. Friday night was the

Today was Al Langs auction, not so many deals, but the pieces were excuisite,
and I myself got a couple of superb pieces.
It is sunny and warm here now, so the weather is perfect.
I will be open till thursday, anyone feel free to come around.

[meteorite-list] Tucson show report

2004-02-01 Thread meteoritehunter
Hi everyone, another show report live from Tucson.
There is some very nice new meteorites here at the show, no new falls though, so that
dissapoints me.
Some large sales have already occured, so money is there and it seems that the economy
is coming back to life.
I have not seen anything nice that the Moroccans brought in, although Ali Hamani has
some great stuff as usual.
It is nice and warm here, although they are calling for snow in Tucson on tuesday!
I'll belive it when I see it.
Everyone is just getting started so there is plenty to see here.
I am waiting for some of you, so let me know when you are getting here.

May the new year bring us some great new falls. Is a pallasite fall too much to ask
for?

[meteorite-list] Arkansas fall report

2003-11-07 Thread meteoritehunter
Hi everyone, I just got back from the "scene" of the first reported piece of the
Monday night Arkansas fall.
The piece that recieved so much news attention is a 200 gram fragment of slag. Not a
meteorite as the finder so adamantly kept telling me because "the scientists and TV
reporters said so".
When I saw that a piece was reported found, I decided to jump on the next and last
plane out of Tucson, I had merely 45 minutes from booking to get on the plane! I got
to Arkansas on standby late last night and drove to my friend Gary Loyd's house. He
has a new baby, my godson, so I found this a sufficient excuse to come whether or not
the meteorite was real. He lives an hour and 45 minutes from Palastine.
Anyway, the reports from the people there are that monday night a huge lightshow and
explosion were heard, then many following booms, and people in Joneboro 45 minutes to
the north saw the meteorite break up into many pieces as it headed south- southeast.
That does put it exactly in line with Palastine where I went today.
Does anyone know how close you should be to the fall site if sonic booms are heard?
The area is prime for hunting, mostly large farms and almost all are barren right now,
having been harvested for the winter. There are without a doubt alot of meteorites on
the ground somewhere in that area, and hopefully some farmer will find some true
meteorites.
Ill spend the weekend here waiting to see if anything else turns up, but so far, no
cigar.

[meteorite-list] Munich show

2003-10-31 Thread meteoritehunter
Hi everyone, just a quick note before I head down to work here at the Munich mineral
show. It is a huge show, 3 buildings, all with several hundres dealers. Nice museum
exhibits including the Neuschwanstien meteorite. There are of course, alot of
meteorites here, but virtually NOTHING from the Moroccan dealers! Each one has a small
flat or two of chondrites almost all are the several thousand kilo NWA under so many
names.
Some nice historical meteorites, ALL with very high prices. Nothing in any sort of
bulk except the maligned Shirokovsky, which the Russian owner is still selling with
the help of a very nice display and printed information that looks like it was made in
hollywood. That scam is with us to stay!

More later.

[meteorite-list] Munich show

2003-10-29 Thread meteoritehunter
Hi everyone, I am in Prague Czech Republic. I have just visited the nice museum here
and saw the meteorite collection. Some very rare historic meteorites, nice old
displays, 200 year old fall reports.
I will be in Munich this weekend selling with Hans Koser in the International hall. I
hope to see many of my European clients there.
Thanks

Re: [meteorite-list] What Would Nininger Do?

2003-10-13 Thread meteoritehunter
By the way in no way anywhere in that email did i threaten you.

also, i am confused, what is the problem with taking in investor money to go on
expeditions? I never said i didnt, the people have the choice whether or not to put in
money, i also use my own money, you act like i am just tkaing their money for the
whole thing, i am simply spereading the risks and rewards aroud, so that in case of
massive failure (Like this trip) i wont suffer the entire burden. luckily in invester
trips, that has never been the case.

I know that Blaine Reed found that Bolivian meteorite, you cried wanting to be
included in as one of the finders even though you were nowhere near them at the time.
Keven, just because you were in the same country with them does not make you the
finder, or the leader of the expedition.

And by the way, who gives a crap what "Nininger would do" I have read all of his
books, and they all lead me to belive that he would do exactly as I am doing. But who
cares, the man is dead, was just another guy who loved meteorites, not God. I am in no
way trying to be like Harvey.

Bob is not on this list because of all the drivel, who can blame him? I think I know,
I can see the guy's house from my own, he walkes over to visit me all the time.

[meteorite-list] Next stop, India

2003-10-04 Thread meteoritehunter
Hello everyone. Several things, it is not the fact that Matteo speacks his own
language that is a problem with so many people, it is his piss-poor attitude, he only
whines and complains, nothing ever good out of his emails.

On the Wales fireball, I cant believe that it could be anything but a meteor, if it
was an airplane, then it was an airplane exploding in a rather disruptive way, not
unlike the Space shuttle Challenger. How could any airplane make that fireball and not
be exploding? and if it exploded, we would all know about it! It was headed to sea, so
perhaps no explosion was heard.

I am on my way to India, sitting in an airport typing this. My next report will be
from the strewnfield.

Thanks
Mike Farmer
