2024-07-15 Thread Darryl Pitt via Meteorite-list

Hi, Paolo.

Yours is a lovely tribute. And that is indeed a terrific image of Marc — it
captures the bon vivant that he was; for this reader it elicited a very wide
smile. Thank you.
My condolences to Marc's family, friends and those in this community blessed to
know Marc and mourn his passage.

Kentucky is also home to Eagle Station which has its own Eagle Station
pallasite subgroup and Burnwell which Tim McCoy at the Smithsonian has
suggested that it be classified as an HH4 chondrite. There was no typo in
that classification.

We've got bourbon.
We've got weird meteorites.

[meteorite-list] AD - Nakhla Dog Meteorites - Important Texas Meteorite Collection

2024-07-01 Thread Rob Wesel via Meteorite-list
Hello All

I have been fortunate to represent the meteorite collection of the
late Bruce Dod, former professor of Earth Sciences and Astronomy at
Wayland Baptist University. The man worked and lived in Plainview,
Texas and managed to amass some impossible specimens in both size and
rarity. A link to his collection can be found here:

http://www.nakhladogmeteorites.com/catalog/dod.htm

The site is photo heavy and the resolution has been kept to 72dpi,
please do not hesitate to contact me for alternate images, angles,
etc.

A full bio on Dod along with his contributions to science is listed on
the web page.

Of note, there is a piece from Kentucky, Monticello to be exact. This
meteorite is an absolute unicorn with zero distribution outside of the
repository specimen. It is the only howardite from Kentucky and the
find was nothing short of incredible:

This was a "crustless" howardite found on the shore of Lake Cumberland
while out for a stroll with a friend. There are two prevailing
theories, one being that a water landing caused a sort of quench that
fractured the crust and the other is that the lapping of the waves
slowly ablated the crust away. To be walking around a lake, even with
meteorites on the mind, and cold finding such a rare type...I mean
think about it. The level of rock confusion, to spot and maintain that
this HAS to be a meteorite. Not just a chondrite, let's go with
howardite. It really is second to none and the perfect intersection of
preparedness and opportunity. Someone will own the only private piece
in the world.

The collection will be open to preview and inquire for 10 days with an
option to offer on the entire collection. At the end of this period
prices will be assigned to individual pieces.

I invite you to look even if not buying and I thank you for your time,

[meteorite-list] Customs and Border Protection Crackdowns on some De Minimis Shipments into the US

2024-06-01 Thread Paul via Meteorite-list

Currently, US Customs and Border Protection is cracking
down on de minimis Shipments from China into the US.
It is now currently limited to air shipments from China.
However, this crackdown could extend eventually to other
countries and ultimately to some degree to marine shipments.

Because de minimis shipping consists of any goods that
is less than 800 dollars, this crackdown, might eventually
greatly delay the shipping of any package of goods and
lengthen the time it would to ship anything into the
United States. Also, any package of de minimis goods
shipped into the United States more closely scrutinized
by the CPB in terms of whether it is properly declared in
description and price by the sender.

Although it is nothing to worry about now, The situation
could change in the future.

Below are some new articles

Customs Brokers under scutiny as US CPB confirms

threshold."

Find some one in your area, a jeweler, a pawn shop, a lab .. who has an

2024-05-24 Thread John Lutzon via Meteorite-list

Hello Matthias,
Do you know of any references regarding how armored chondrules form?
I believe, the comprehensive study of the inner/outer crust of the metal, as
well as the two inner/outer crusts of the matrix, might lead to a
trail/solution. They are so cool, how??
 That's it, John

[meteorite-list] zoom online meteorite sale this saturday

2024-05-17 Thread Mark Lyon via Meteorite-list
Hi all. I just wanted to let you know about a zoom live sale that I am
having this Saturday at 10am arizona time. Produced with the help of
Topher Spin meteorites, this sale will include 185 items and looks to have
a total sales value of well over $500,000. There will be three raffles
throughout
the sale, valued at roughly $8000 total, which you enter automatically by
purchasing any item. 10% of all revenue from the sale will come to
Topherspin Meteorites. Purchasers will also automatically be invited to my
party during the Tucson, 2025 show where we finally crack open our double
magnum of Martian infused champaign. The sale will be divided into three
segments, roughly as follows. Mixed valued items, 10am -12pm. Lower value
items. 12.00pm – 2pm. High value items. 2pm – 4pm. Zoom Meeting ID:#826
7552 7747 Password: Topherspin The raffle items are a 68.6 gram full slice
of hassi el biod 002, a set of small pieces of all 5 known martian types,
and a large individual of Libyan desert glass. This should be an awesome
show and I hope to see you all there. Please tell your friends!

 Thank you, Paul & Jim,

Mr. Kashuba's article on SaU 562 caught my eyes. I also acquired this TS before
classification. Iirc, it was also Luc Labenne labeled with a P-34
field designation. From first scoping, it was total eye candy. However, John K.
has a way to turn TS pictures into a crisp close up 5 course meal.
His FOV-0.5 pic is mind boggling.

Thanks Everyone, for another great edition.
