Hello List and candidates: I have a statement/question for all the candidates... As a newcommer to this forum, I was quite disheartened when all there was, it seemed, was bickering and squabbling between members with a whole lot of finger-pointing and acusations flying all around. Dick (Richard Lipke) ,IMCA 1155 - Original Message - Hello Craig: I will respond to your question and to Pete's question about why I (one of the last two candidates to put out my statement) have not put out my statement yet. My statement will be coming out soon, but I have held off for one important reason: A question that was asked had to do with the IMCA's budget. While I have my own personal opinions, I am also a member of the IMCA Board and we were having discussions as to what we needed to say and the best method for distributing this to the membership (and only the IMCA membership). My official statement, now that the budget question has been addressed, will come out later today or early tomorrow (Tucson time). Now to address, in part, your question. As Elizabeth just posted on the Metlist, what you have done (unintentionally) has been part of the problem that we are facing. You wished to ask a question of the IMCA members, but sent your question to the entire Metlist, probably getting to less than half of the IMCA members! Discussions that should be occuring only among IMCA members gets posted on the Metlist. When this happens, many IMCA members are left out of the discussion and, unfortunately, people who should not be involved in the discussions add their two cents (or more) and things con then get out of hand. I think that if you were to look at where the accusations that you refer to come from, they are not always (and probably rarely) from IMCA members, but others who are on the Metlist. This was one of the dilemmas the Board faced with respect to the Budget: what is discussed on the IMCA list should stay on the IMCA list and has no business on the Metlist. Re: [meteorite-list] [IMCA] Elections
Hi Elizabeth, I agreed with your post and got a kick out of some of the replies to it. I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, so I just consider myself a provisional IMCA member (which is one tier above an unclassified IMCAer) since I was in on it founding when things were free, and I recall a a year more, but decided to save the $100-$200 since then as I've never had a problem in thousands of interchanges, knock on wood ;-). But that could change in an instant ;-( though I don't know if anybody could remedy much if you go in good faith to start with and someone else is a bad apple. Really though, IMCA stuff should be kept 100% on that list or in private for a number of reasons - for politics, we on the list cannot know the complete story so it is Palin or Obama spam at worst and advertising at best which should be within the IMCA and subject to its rules, if by candidates up for election on a level playing field as we assume all are qualified and the electorate is educated to make decisions based on personal inclinations. - because some people are sensitive to public peer pressures to pay for something they may not yet have a need and otherwise might actualy have already joined if not for the stigma of arm-twisting. - because the IMCA should not expose any of its mullings to the public to accomplish the primary goal of presenting an effective force to get things accomplished rather than getting sidetracked with nonsensical detail noise which can be misinterpreted by others - because the IMCA can be misquoted by corresponding in good faith in a contenscious situation that can later become distorted because someone became disgruntled about who knows what, and later the IMCA can't respond to such manipulation without exposing confidential information As a matter of fact, the IMCA shares a lot in common with judges in Mexico. That is why by law they are only allowed to speak through their resolutions and decisions. Kind of takes the fun away from going to court there...oops sorry for the mumbling, it's been a dasterdly day. Good luck to you and to all those involved in this! Kindest wishes and good seeing! I feel the IMCA has reached a point of standstill and the list is virtually dead with no activity. We need to change this. I think its a time for fresh ideas and a new level of growth for the group. What I would like, and my ideas... I want the IMCA to take a much greater active role in the field of meteorites, for the members to create a group specifically for community outreach and educational work within the respective members towns. I would like the IMCA to take on a greater role in public and start working with schools, institutions and also governments. As a group of collectors and dealers, we have a unique opportunity that I feel is being ignored. Yes, it will be hard work, but it needs to be done by someone soon, otherwise we will end up losing the ability to have the awesome rocks from space we all enjoy. The list. We need to get the list more active. I suggest a combined effort to post at least once per week of something relevant to meteorites. Even if its a new meteorite we added... You have a meteorite classified, post the testing results to the list. Something, anything more then we are doing now. I think the member fees and budget should be available for view on the site to show where dues are going and to help to get a fund pool built for projects we wish to take on. I am working on a museum, yes it will be small, yes it may or may not work, but I am trying to do this and the group has been quite about this. Thats not a good thing. This is something that the IMCA should be discussing and working up ideas and tossing out thoughts. Nothing but silence... This has been very disappointing for me. My museum is something that I wanted to use the IMCA name with, to help bring it more public, but I am left wondering why should I if we cant even generate a discussion on the list about it. This is a chance to really break meteorites into a greater public awareness. Sure it wont be on the level of meteorite men but its more real then the TV show and something that has the ability to educate the public rather then entertain - far more then the TV show does. Not a stab at the show or the people behind it, but just the truth. Yet again, this list is quite. I do want to thank the members that have helped, and this is not about the money, rather then the outright lack of support the IMCA list has shown for this... I have reached the point where I honestly wonder the IMCA is here for. It is not (or hardly) publicly active, it does not take a predominant role in outreach. Some members do, but I have not seen this from the IMCA as a group. I feel that changes must be made and growth start, otherwise I may end up leaving the group. I just dont see the value for the dues, other then the fact I get sales from having an IMCA logo. The recent drama on the metlist concerning the IMCA and its members clearly shows there is a bad impression some have of the IMCA - weather valid or not, caused by a disgruntled former member or not - it is still out there. The IMCA must start taking a more active role. Greg Catterton www.wanderingstarmeteorites.com IMCA member 4682 On Ebay: http://stores.shop.ebay.com/wanderingstarmeteorites On Facebook:
Re: [meteorite-list] [IMCA] Elections and my status
Hi Count, Greg and List, As a non-member but avid meteorite-freak, here is my two centavos - I agree with what the Count says about the IMCA's stated purpose. There is clearly little or no mention of the IMCA being an activist group to promote an agenda. But, I can also understand what Greg is saying and I think Greg's ideas are well worth considering. A long time ago, when I tried to start up the Meteorite Working Group, my intention was to fill a void in the meteorite scene that the IMCA and the Meteoritical Society do not address - that is public outreach, educational work, and working to defend the legal status of meteorites. This last aspect is taking on more importance now that the government has seen dollar signs and wants to crack down on meteorite hunting in the US. None of us want to see America become another Australia when it comes to meteorites. And unless somebody or some group steps up to the plate to defend the interests of the collector community, we run the risk of having a biased group of collector-hating scientists and greedy bureaucrats hijack the direction of the collecting community. Other professions, businesses and communities have lobby groups to defend their interests and it seems that meteorites lacks this. Something needs to be done in this regard. It may not be the IMCA's stated purpose to do this kind of thing, but when someone stepped up to try (me and the Working Group), I was either ignored by the community or attacked for it. So if not the IMCA, then who? What's more, there is no place on the web for an eager newbie or for an educator to visit and receive free outreach materials or educational materials about meteorites. Sure, one can search Google or email certain members of the community (including the IMCA) and receive help, but IMO there should be a centralized watering-hole that is open to the public where these goals can be met. It wouldn't require a lot of money or work to put up a simple website and have some files available for viewing or download. Both of these things (advocating and outreach) would greatly enhance the image and standing of the IMCA and the meteorite community as a whole. I know I sound like Greg's cheerleader lately, but I think Greg has some good ideas here that are worth considering and implementing. The International Meteorite Collectors Association (IMCA Inc.) has one primary purpose: helping Meteorite Collectors in their search for Authentic Meteorites for their collections and assisting others in helping to learn more about meteorites. Whether they are new to the Meteorite World or very knowledgeable, we want all Collectors to buy/trade with confidence from our Members, knowing that every item will be exactly what it is represented to be. A breakdown of this... 1. helping Meteorite Collectors in their search for Authentic Meteorites How is this currently being done? I dont see much active work in this area. 2. assisting others in helping to learn more about meteorites. How is this currently being done? again, I dont see much active work in this area. 3. we want all Collectors to buy/trade with confidence from our Members Should we not be the IMDA (D for dealers) then? Any group that is content to settle with what they have and not look for growth will never do what a group with a vision can. Please I dont want anyone to take this wrong, but I am just not happy with what the IMCA actually does and I dont even really see anything of value (again, aside from sales due to the logo) from being a member at this point unless the group does more then they do now. You make mention of the BBB... a system that is so outdated it is not even thought of a valuable anymore to most people. Is that the direction of the IMCA? I feel that a new direction is what the IMCA needs to stay fresh. If the current board will not or does not want this and I am not able to get elected to help change the direction, I will start my own group that will focus on outreach, education and community involvement. The museum would be a great starting point for it. I will do it independent of the IMCA as a group if needed. Aside from growing a member list, what has the IMCA really done in the 3 years I have been a member? The only thing I have seen is buying the EOM, which was a good move, but not enough. Where has the $18,000 in dues ($20 x 300 members) for the past 3 years gone to? These are questions I would like to have answered and also made public on the site. By doing so, it will show others and perspective members what good the IMCA does and what our dues go to. It will also help to provide a source for the members to pull funds to achieve goals that will hopefully be put in place. Regardless of the original intent of the IMCA, I would like to see it take a more active role in todays world of meteorites. The IMCA was started when Lunars were selling for well over $2000 per gram... you can now buy them all day long for as low as $200 per gram. Times have changed and the IMCA needs to change with them, or get left behind. We can amend the US constitution, we can amend the declaration. Sorry for the metlist post, I did not see Count CCd the metlist. This was supposed to be an IMCA list post. I personally admire the energy and time you put into marketing your inventory, establishing a museum and conducting educational outreach programs, but as regards to your reasons for wanting to be on the IMCA Board of Directors, I have to disagree with you. IMCA wasn't established to do the activist work you mentioned. We must simply read IMCA's own declaration to remind us of its sole purpose. Hey Greg, I agree with you on the museum idea, however, the comment about the museum and the Meteorite Men, is not entirely accurate. The Meteorite Men is a show about meteorite hunting, collecting and value, the science, and of course centers around the adventure. You're assuming in your statement people want to be educated. They don't! People want to be entertained. If people want to be educated they'd go to school. The Science Channel has a very good formula. Over the years, Discovery has honed their recipe for a show down to a few key components, which mix the ingredients in a way that appeals to a much wider audience. If it were just about the science, it would be boring as hell and nobody would watch. Either you make it FUN, or you make it dramatic. My advice for your museum is not to focus your marketing on the educational part. Make it fun, make it interactive, keep it exciting, the science and education comes naturally. Also, Don't fault the IMCA for not jumping on the bandwagon. Count Deiro's point about the IMCA being like the BBB is a good analogy. The IMCA is not about endorsement, it's about Authenticity, and in a word, trust. If the IMCA jumped out there and started promoting the Meteorite Museum, or other causes it might be seen as an endorsement of sorts. They are not a lobbyist group, nor do they promote activism of any kind. If the IMCA somehow endorsed your museum, what would happen? I don't know... Re: [meteorite-list] [IMCA] Elections and my status
I love the Meteorite Men TV show, its a great way to get meteorites out into the public attention on a mainstream level. I actually even tried to help promote it with one of my websites. Its a great thing and I never would make it seem like a bad thing. The museum will be very interactive and not like anything else out there. I want people to have fun and learn while they have fun... the type of learning that you dont know your doing until its too late. Its not that I am seeking an endorsement or even funding from the IMCA, but for the group to have more of an active role in something like this. Even if members posted to the IMCA list and shared ideas and we tossed thoughts and opinions around, it would be better then the silence that the IMCA list is. I will go back to my original statement about the BBB. Its old, outdated and not what it was many years ago. Thats not the way I would like to see the IMCA turn out. Sure the IMCA may have its original goals, but as times change so should the goals. Otherwise, what you end up having is an out of touch group that is stagnant and lacking vision. The world of meteorites is changing, the IMCA needs to keep up with it. If the IMCA as an international group of meteorite collectors will not stand up to fill a role that is needed, then who should? We can all sit and complain about how bad new laws are (or new enforcement of old ones) and it will only get worse. One voice will be washed out in a group of people, but if the group of people take up the call of the one voice, it will be heard loudly. Im not expecting the IMCA to become the voice of all, but I do hope they will step up and at least become a voice. You can't even purchase Lunar meteorites directly from the Moroccans for this price anymore. I paid more than this for lunaites from the Germans that were found a long time ago in Oman. You would be lucky to find a Martian at this price due to there being five times as much available. Please provide us with the dealers names who are selling all day long at this price so that I can take advantage of them.
