[meteorite-list] ] Meteorites as Ammunition

2010-07-30 Thread Bill Hall
How strange you should ask.
A friend of mine and I decided to make some projectiles a round 6
weeks ago. I am using 1 inch slabs of Campo, and having the bullets
cut out on a water jet, then finnished on a lathe. They will be shot
using a 50 BMG rifle with a sabot.

As soon as Nosler Bullets gets back up and running,( they had an
explosion a little bit ago) we should have some slow Motion closeup
balistic shots to enjoy.

We want to try this on Materials like Robert Bigelows inflatable
space structures.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites as Ammunition

2010-07-28 Thread dave carothers
It wouldn't be practical to melt meteorites to make musket balls. That's
not to say that iron meteorites couldn't be used as ammunition just as they
are. The blunderbuss had a large enough bore and muzzle to accpt smaller
meteorites as is. In fact it wasn't uncommon for users of the blunderbuss
to load it with rocks, nails, and anythnig else that happened to be around.
Same with canons.

Bill says ...just about any firearm.

Just about any muzzle loader with a patched round can eat balls made of
meteorite material, or anything else for that matter. It wouldn't surprise
me if we learned that some enterprising conquistador had heated up some
Campo and used the balls in his matchlock..or a canon.

Does anyone care to expound on what temp one would have to heat an iron
meteorite to be able to pour the melt into a mold to make a musket ball?
Could different classes of irons have different melt temperatures? Would
inclusions be easily seperated?

Projectiles made from meteoric iron and it's related inclusions would

2010-07-28 Thread dave carothers
I never saw the movie, but there are plenty of historical references to
cannoneers using scrap of all kinds (metal, glass, rocks, gravel, lengths of
chain, etc.). The common commercially-made equivalent ammunition was
grapeshot and canister rounds. Getting hit with grapeshot or a canister
round would definitely make your eyes water.

thats the melting point for pure iron. The Ni works like antifreeze and lowers

Remaining indoors is only one solution, Count. As I learned in school long
time ago, the appropriate reaction in the case of ABC-attack while walking
outdoors is: jumping into the next roadside ditch and protecting your head
with the schoolbag.

Well, that would do in the case of an alien-meteoritical attack as well I
guess. In that special situation carrying a dip net with you would be fine
:-)

Not sure about reality, but there's and awesome Outer Limits where a
meteorite lands in either Japan or China and they make ammunition (bullets) out
of the iron and... you guessed it... four solders get shot, and get taken over
by aliens that were within (inside) the meteorite (unsure if this is how they
traveled or what) and these four individuals did amazing feats (through mind
control) and built a spaceship to take some humans to their alien world.  It's
a really good episode if you like that kind of show - it was first aired on the
original Outer Limits and also redone on the 1990's Outer Limits.

Pretty cool... one of my favorites

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites as Ammunition

2010-07-27 Thread Thunder Stone

Kirk:

Let's see:

Robert Duval was the investigator and the main guy that got shot was the actor
(Lord Garth) from the old Star Trek - the one where they brought medicine to an
asylum.  Anyway, it's a two part Outer Limits episode.  I have the DVD's at
home, not with me.

Check it out.

Not sure about reality, but there's and awesome Outer Limits where a
meteorite lands in either Japan or China and they make ammunition (bullets)
out of the iron and... you guessed it... four solders get shot, and get
taken over by aliens that were within (inside) the meteorite (unsure if this
is how they traveled or what) and these four individuals did amazing feats
(through mind control) and built a spaceship to take some humans to their
alien world. It's a really good episode if you like that kind of show - it
was first aired on the original Outer Limits and also redone on the 1990's
 Outer Limits.

Pretty cool... one of my favorites

2010-07-27 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
You'd have to paint him to match the desert sands - or he would end up
as bowl of turtle soup in some nomad's tent. ;)

On a more serious, sneaky and illegal note - I wonder if anyone has
put magnets in their shoes and then took a walk around Meteor Crater?
I can picture some sneak going back to his car, taking his shoes off,
removing the magnets, and then shale, spheroids and fragments fall off
the bottom of the shoes. Not that I would condone that, but I bet it
would work.

Not sure about reality, but there's and awesome Outer Limits where a
meteorite lands in either Japan or China and they make ammunition
(bullets) out of the iron and... you guessed it... four solders get shot,
and get taken over by aliens that were within (inside) the meteorite
(unsure if this is how they traveled or what) and these four individuals
did amazing feats (through mind control) and built a spaceship to take
some humans to their alien world. It's a really good episode if you like
that kind of show - it was first aired on the original Outer Limits and
also redone on the 1990's Outer Limits.

Pretty cool... one of my favorites

 Hi Count and List,

I wonder, has anyone ever fashioned bullets out of iron meteorites?

 Best regards,

Maybe Speedy and my dog could be friends. My dog hunts meteorites too.

It was a two part episode called The Inheritors

An excellent story. One of the best (I have all the episodes)!

I am a huge fan of the Outer Limits, but I don't remember that one.
Do you

recall what actors were in that episode??

Thanks!

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites as Ammunition

2010-07-27 Thread countdeiro
Bill says ...just about any firearm.

Just about any muzzle loader with a patched round can eat balls made of
meteorite material, or anything else for that matter. It wouldn't surprise me
if we learned that some enterprising conquistador had heated up some Campo and
used the balls in his matchlock..or a canon.

Does anyone care to expound on what temp one would have to heat an iron
meteorite to be able to pour the melt into a mold to make a musket ball? Could
different classes of irons have different melt temperatures? Would inclusions
be easily seperated?

Projectiles made from meteoric iron and it's related inclusions would destroy
the barrel of just about any firearm.
