Hello Jim, Hello All, I dont know how that could happen but it did happen! Each year after Jims passing away, on October 10, I wrote a few lines on Meteorite Central to commemorate this great, modest man! Not so this time I had simply overlooked the entry in my calendar! But I know Jim will not be angry with me. He knows I did not do this on purpose! Wednesday, October 10, 2012 was already the fifth year that our esteemed Jim Kriegh left us for good to live among the celestial messengers that he loved and cherished like we all do! So if you can spare a minute or two, remember Jim! Jim, Twink, John, and Dr Kring, it was their unremitting efforts that gave Gold Basin and its meteorites a place in the Hall of Meteorites! Hello Bernd, how much count 4 planetary days of delay against heavenly periods? Nothing. Unfortunately never having had the pleasure to know Jim and Twink personally, I underline your intention. What attracts me much is the obvious constellation of innocence and passion which led them to discovering the strewnfield of Gold Bassin. And to communicate with the meteorite community far more. Jim and Twink and companions: the meteorite world owes you so much! May it be on cloud GB or even down here. Best regards, Matthias - Original Message - From: Bernd V. KRING D.A. et al. (1998) Gold Basin Meteorite Strewn Field: The Fossil remnants of an asteroid that catastrophically fragmented in Earths atmosphere (Lunar and Planetary Science XXIX, 1998, excerpts): The Gold Basin meteorite was discovered by J.D. Kriegh while prospecting for gold with a metal detector on 24 November 1995 in the eastern portion of the Mojave Desert. The initial find consisted of two fragments (about 13 g total mass) which were immediately identified as meteoritic material by one of us ... From the morphology of the fragments, it was clear that they were part of a larger object. Subsequent field studies by Kriegh, J. Blennert, I. Monrad, ... have recovered more than 2000 fragments as of January 1998. Most of these fragments were found using metal detecting techniques ... Hello Meteorite Community, One year ago, Jim Kriegh, Oro Valley's heart and soul, died at the age of 78. Saturday, December 02, 2006, Jim wrote me this: I expect to be able to go occasionally searching for more meteorites and/or gold but not near as often as I would like. I am very confident that Jim is now much closer to these messengers from the heavens that we all love and cherish so much. Maybe he's watching us from his little asteroid that bears his name: 149244 Kriegh. This little asteroid is a member of the so-called Flora family of inner main belt asteroids (S-type asteroids) and it is an excellent decision to dedicate this one to Jim because the Floras are thought to be members of the parent bodies of the L chondrites, ... Gold Basin is, as we all know. an L-chondrite! Jim, you may be gone, but you are not forgotten! [meteorite-list] Jim Kriegh
The Meteoritical Society Newsletter, September 2007 James Kriegh The society is saddened by the passing of Professor James Kriegh, who was a key figure in the renaissance of meteorite search and discovery in Arizona. He was particularly well-known for his discovery of the Gold Basin strewn field, which represents a shower of debris created by a multi- kiloton asteroid collision during the late Pleistocene. Because the debris field can potentially provide a measure of the strength of an impacting asteroid and thus help mitigate the hazards of future impacting asteroids, he painstakingly mapped the locations of thousands of meteoritic stones with his friends Ingrid Monrad and John Blennert. To preserve the scientific integrity of the Gold Basin site, that team worked largely at its own expense for approximately two years before making the find public. Jim collected meteorites with appropriate permits, provided abundant material to the national meteorite collection at the Smith- sonian Institution, and sent representative samples to other museums and researchers. Jim was an Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Arizona who, once retired, developed a deep interest in meteoritics. He became a valued collaborator and good friend. Jim was known for his integrity and gentleman's civility, two attributes often considered old-fashioned, but welcome in the field of meteoritics. I was heartened to see his repeated successes. While working on Gold Basin, he and his colleagues discovered several other meteorites. He used the notoriety of those discoveries to help educate others in the community, including K-12 students, about the scientific value of meteorites and the excitement of scientific discovery. In addition to his meteorite discoveries and years of teaching, he co-founded a town north of Tucson and is commonly known as the Father of the Town of Oro Valley (incorporated in 1974); he helped organize the Oro Valley Historical Society (2005); and was a major force behind the town's successful bid to obtain the historic Steam Pump Ranch (2007), which was built in the 1870s. Jim Kriegh enriched his community both in Arizona and in the international field of meteoritics. (David A. [meteorite-list] Jim Kriegh, John Blennert, and Twink Monrad / Gold Basin Tribute
Hi all, After reading all the beautiful things that everyone (Especially Notkin and Farmer) wrote about Jim Kriegh last week, John Gwilliam and I decided that a tribute was necessary. For all of you that never had the pleasure of meeting Jim, this video will help you understand what all the hoopla was about. November 25, 2007 will mark the 12 year anniversary of the discovery of the Gold Basin Strewn Field. When Jim Kriegh, the finder of the very first Gold Basin Meteorite passed away, we lost a wonderful friend, mentor and an amazing meteorite hunter. I personally owe a huge debt of gratitude to Jim, since without his help in the spring of 1998, I may never have found my first meteorite. So, we thought it fitting to offer a tribute to Jim as well has his Gold Basin Hunting partners John Blennert and Twink Monrad. The following is an interview that was originally filmed By John Gwilliam in Feb, 2003 at the Tucson Gem and Mineral show. This interview covers the Gold Basin Meteorite's humble beginnings all the way to present day. here it is.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBoWqYsL6qw Thanks, Ruben Garcia Phoenix, Arizona http://www.mr-meteorite.com __ Do You Yahoo!? I did not have the privilege of knowing him myself but see that he was dearly loved by many. How one is remembered by others after passing is testament to ones character, and judging by what has been said of Jim just on this list, he was truly a great man. He will be greatly missed. Dear Jim, The great crater in our hearts and weeping of our desert-worn eyes caused with this news and thought of missing you can't seem real. We will observe a day of admiration and respect in your honor today: for your unique and wonderful accomplishments strewn across the world in the field we love, but above all, the kindness, humility, and accessibility with which your touched our lives a country away from you. I am deeply saddened that we never did realize our hunt we discussed together, but you have generously accompanied me on many excursions, many without my mention (I wish I had said more), and will continue to do so. Oro Valley and Tucson are changed for me, and I keep you always in mind as one of the few unexpected treasures I found in my life without having to look, Jim, in you, we have a true hero, in the true sense and in every sense. My most heartfelt sympathy to his family and friends. I think I only met him briefly, at one of the Tucson events (and even that is in question), but there is no doubt that he was one of the outstanding contributors to our little hobby, and will be sorely missed. I was not fortunate enough of ever meeting Jim but, here in the Ensisheim area, we all very well know him through his outstanding achievements in the strewnfields. But he is even more recognized as a truly kind, humble and altruistic person, never sparing his efforts to initiate enthousiastic young (and less young) meteorite lovers in field collecting. My personal thoughts go to Jim's family and many other relatives and friends for whom the loss this outstanding man is by all means incommensurable. Jim's memories will never die and all of us will continue for long years to read stories about Jim Kreigh and remember his generous accomplishments. Jim's memories will bring a vivid recollection furing our future shows, forever. Please accept all my sincere condolences, also on behalf of our small community here around. It was a great pleasure being a friend Of Jim, How did that happen? Because the first time I ever met Him was at his home which he had opened to the community During one of the Tucson Shows. I had never met him and Took the opportunity to thank him for having me as one of His guests. He stopped everything he was doing and took me in to Show me his fabulous collection of rather small but highly Representative specimens very neatly arranged they made A truly spectacular display. He was so friendly from the very first minute we met That from that moment on I felt like we were good friends - Because that is just the kind of person he was: A good friend To all, active of mind but living from they heart, he was an example not only to the meteoritic community but to the human race. Jim is gone!!! I have a hard time believing it. I saw him just two months ago in Tucson. After a very nice lunch at Twink's, we all went to Jim's house to look at his collection, use his microscope and of course talk about meteorites. And as usual we had a marvelous time. Thank you Twink for bringing us together one more time. Did you know that the park across the street from his house was named after him? No Jim, you will not be forgotten. Jim was a genuine person who reflected with paramount greatness upon the meteorite collecting community. The loss of this kind gentleman will certainly leave a void that cannot be filled in both our hearts and minds. He inspired me through the appreciation he demonstrated for each and every meteorite regardless of its history. His enthusiasm for meteorites and people were endless. It was a privilege to have been invited to Jim and Twinks household where their concern for this hobby was expressed and advanced through these wonderful gatherings.
