[meteorite-list] The Tabor 1753 fall

2010-12-13 Thread Shawn Alan
Hello Chris and Listers,

As for the Tabor meteorite, there has been some written documention about the
fall, however, its not as much as other falls like Siena or L'Aigle. But any
case, there has been documentation on the Tabor fall from leading scholars at
the turn of the century, referring to these stones as coming from the sky. But
for those first few stones that had been documented, were seen as thunder
stones and in some instances, institutions would do away with those stones in
fear or ridicule. But luckly, Tabor meteorite and other important falls had
been saved. Down below are some links with information about the Tabor fall.

Wow, it finally came through. Damn, the US postal service works faster
than the Met List. Isn't that incredible? I'm appalled. Oh well, maybe
there's a lot of people on the Met List sending off packages and jamming
things up, I can accept that. Just curious.

2010-12-13 Thread Shawn Alan
Chris and Listers,

What type of information are you looking for about the Tabor fall? At the time
that Tabor fell, in 1753, there wasnt much research done at the time and
Chladni hadnt came in to the picture yet. I would say that it took up till
Siena before meteoritic science started to take a strong hold and L'Aigle
fall to seal the deal. I did notice that scholars did take note with some
of these thunder stones and started to piece them together and one scholar,
Howard, observed physical characteristics within the matrix of these stones and
the Tabor fall. But for the most part with the Tabor fall, there is bits and
pieces of information that one has to piece together. One can conclude that
with this fall and countless other falls, helped pave the way with meteoritic
science.

Here is a great link about Chladin and the origins of modern meteorite
research. With this paper write by Marvin there is section about early falls
and how they came to be. If you have the time I would try to read up on it if
you already hadnt done so all ready.

Hi Chris,

the fall of Tabor was firstly documented in 1754 by the Bavarian-Bohemian
astronomer Joseph Stepling (1716 - 1778)in his publication:

De pluvia lapidea anni MDCCLIII ad Strkov pagum uno milliari Taborio
Bohemiae urbe dissitum, et ejus causis meditatio, Pragae 1754

"On the stone rain of the year 1753 at the village Strkov, situated one mile
away from the Bohemian town Tabor,
and thoughts about its causes."

Maybe Edwin Thompson has this monography in his huge library?
