[meteorite-list] Cleaning stony meteorites

2012-01-04 Thread Floyd Griff Griffith

Hello all and good day

I have some uNWA’s that have rust or a rust color in the crust. This is not
fresh crust.
I would like to remove the rust and or rust color from the surface of these
meteorites.
I have also read a post that stated there is a chemical way to the original
crust?

Any help would be appreciated.
I am familiar with working on meteorites as far a cutting, polishing and
etching.

Thanks in advance for your help.

[meteorite-list] Cleaning Stony Meteorites

2005-10-28 Thread Pete Pete

Hi, all,

I've read several articles on cleaning and preserving meteorites, but they
seem to focus on irons and pallasites with rust.

Does anyone have a tip on cleaning stony meteorites - specifically the
desert sand caked on the surface (scale?).

I've been using dental picks under a microscope, which works, but very time
consuming.

I was wondering if a product like CLR or Limeaway would work without harming
the meteorite.

Cheers,
Pete
