[meteorite-list] DENVER SHOW - Ad and Announcement
Hello everybody, Time flies! one month from right now the Denver Show will be in full swing. That's right, the Denver Show is growing, it is now a full week, from September 7 to 14 in the Ramada (ex. Holiday Inn) and let's face it that is the core of the Denver Show, this is where you will find Blaine, Hans, Serge, Dima, and everybody else. Go to http://mzexpos.com/colorado_fall.html for details. And me? I have a house right here in Denver, so that is where you will find me and all my meteorites, and you can look at them in peace and quiet with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. Just email me to make an appointment. Also, as always, the Comets are hosting a Get-Together for the Meteorite Community, it is the social event of the Show. It will be on Friday September 12, from about 5pm until. late. There will be wine, a keg of beer, and lots of food, so do plan to attend. And there will be an auction, since the Comets do need to raise some to pay for all that free food and booze. Also this year, the Comets are trying to raise a bit more to finance the donation of a meteorite to our favorite museum, the Geology Museum of the School of Mines in Golden ( http://www.mines.edu/Geology_Museum ). All your help and participation will be much appreciated. And we are not shy, we do accept donations. For details, timing, location, .. and if you know what you want to place in the Auction, please do email me as soon as possible so I can do some advertising. Thank you and see you all very soon. PS: if you are on Facebook or Twitter, please forward this post to the rest of the world. Thank you. Anne M. [meteorite-list] Denver Show Chelyabinsk and other meteorite prices.
Hello Listers, So I stopped by the Rock show yesterday at the Ramada inn for a bit and walked around with a friend. I saw a lot of minerals and some meteorites and the ones I saw, it seemed Chelyabinsk was popular. The lowest price I saw was $8 a gram and the the top was around $30, but those where for cherry pieces. The new jedi cm2 was priced at $30 with one room. Sikhot Alin was prices at .50c a gram to 3$ a gram for cherry pieces. Ill be there again on Friday and that's when ill take my time in the rooms and also be at the auction so I can meet people for the first time in person and also hope to see people I haven't seen for ages. Lastly, if your there and have a room let me know where your room is at :) Shawn Alan IMCA 1633 ebay store http://www.ebay.com/sch/imca1633nyc/m.html http://meteoritefalls.com/ __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Denver Show - Count me in :)
As usual, I will be selling meteorites and minerals at the Denver Gem & Mineral Show at the Mart. I have a new booth space, first booth as you walk in, directly east of the museum displays. The Denver area has always been my home, and I only set up for one or two shows a year, so my prices are often a bit behind times. By the way, it rained like crazy tonight, and brought some welcome cool air. Many Denver heat records have been tied or surpassed the last few weeks. Also, I hope to get a few Nininger and Huss items into our COMETS auction. Re: [meteorite-list] Denver Show
Hi Said and list, I'll be working at the main Denver Show (in the Merchandise Mart). I work with a lot of the dealers/vendors, the Show's website (see link in my signature below) and the Show's Android app. If you have an Android phone, search for "DGMS" on the Google Play Store (formerly the Android Market). It's very simple right now, but has good information if you are coming to Denver for the show. Fred Hall (Meteorhall) will be in our Show on the main floor. If you enter the main (south) entrance of the Expo building of the Mart, go straight ahead and he will be in the 3rd booth on the right. Ronnie Mckenzie often has meteorites and is usually in our International Room in the G aisle. Ruben Garcia's booth will be in the Fossil show which is in the Plaza building that is attached to the Expo building in the Mart. Several meteorite dealers will be in the Ramada Plaza hotel (formerly the Holiday Inn - Central Denver). Does anyone have a list of these dealers? Here are a couple: Blaine Reed Meteorites, Comet Meteorite Shop KD Meteorites (Keith and Dana Jenkerson) will have a booth on the arena floor of the Coliseum Show. Anne Black won't have a booth, but will be around. I'm sure Mike and Bill Jensen, Dan Wray, Matt Morgan, Fred Olsen, Larry Johnson and other Colorado collectors will be around. Please join us for the Meteorite Auction and Party on Friday, Sept. 14th. Details at http://www.peaktopeak.com/comets/auction.php If anyone knows of more meteorite dealers who will be in Denver in mid-September, please let us know. Re: [meteorite-list] Denver Show
Dear List, Let me try to give a little view of what I have seen here ... The dealers I've bumped into seem to have varying results, though definitely not a stellar Denver this time. This is all put into perspective, when I spoke with a lot of the mineral dealers who will not be lucky enough to cover expenses. Fred Hall had a nice setup and Blaine's room was as cheerful as ever. Hans and his entourage had a pile of meteorite people pouring out last time I passed there and other friendly meteorite folks were doing business in the parking lot. Jose of Rock Gems brought his lovely wife to Denver and kindly invited me over to join them for lunch in spectacular weather. Generally the show seems rather light on material, and spread out - but there are a few interesting things out there if you looked hard enough that were nice surprises. The get together sponsored by COMETS was nice last night and the buyers and sellers were all kind and generous. Twink Monrad and her host were very kind as usual, and Larry Sloan was in friendly to hang with. I finally got a little mnemonic to know which Jensen is which on sight (a big accomplishment for me and I am embarrassed, also finally got all the Larry last names right after making a fool of myself twisting names forever - I think I got it anyway. Some nice Denver meteorite folk you just get to meet here - one collecting for over 20 years ...=2 0and Fred Olson a real kind host to lend his great warehouse for meteorite activities. Saw some big slices of Fukang that were reasonably priced. Matt Morgan was around having a laid back time. Keith & Dana Jenkersen had a great selection of irons to show. Mike Farmer, Jim Strope, Robert Ward and Shauna showed up today with the usual high energy. Mike seemed to be smiling about his latest adventure but wouldn't spill the beans even after eating Mexican food. Elsewhere, at the show, I passed on a Benguerir since I didn't have any money, but would have like to own at a reasonable price - hadn't seen that fall in a while. The creme of Sikhote individuals was hard to find unless they were gone before I arrived (a distinct possibility). Isheyevo made a brief but surprise appearance... Elsewhere a mouthwatering Tamdakht mostly crusted multi-kilo that made the 1.3 kg 80% monolithic metal melted veined crusted one I am interviewing potential new homes for feel oddly small - quite a remarkable accomplishment considering the rarity material. (There are probably less than 10 specimens existing from everything I know, that are not Humpty Dumpty specimens and the prices are to pounce on). Some Martian stuff was reasonably priced by a friendly Blue-nomad dude hanging out by the pool. I passed on the $800 jumbo Martian thin section with a chuckle. There seemed to be a lot more socializing than hard core Tucson dealing going o n. But the show did seem empty at times. One guy had a 3.5 kilo gibeon sphere he was bowling down the hall in front of our room and he didn't knock anyone down after two tries. One thing most have been happy with is the beautiful weather. My roommates visited a mountain paradise yesterday but eventually caught their breath and found their way home. Lots more people hanging out doing some low key shopping like Darryl Pitt who put a nice historical Japanese meteorite into the auction. I am trying to remember everyone but names are not my specialty unless they are meteorite localities which seem unforgettable after hearing one time - why is this? A lot of people seem to have meteorite hunting expeditions planed at every point of the compass after leaving from Denver, and I don-t just mean the USA. Good luck to everyone, and thanks to those who made the efforts to come here and share their stuff and smiles. Hi Noah, Yes, the Denver Show was this week (and weekend). I sent out an e-mail to the list on Saturday, August 29th with details of the auction and get-together, so you must've missed it. The auction and get-together was last night. I wasn't able to attend due to illness, but I talked to Bill Jensen today and he said that it was a good time, although there were fewer items in the auctions than usual. The Denver Show ends tomorrow (Sunday) night. See the main Denver Show's website link below. Fred Hall of Meteorhall and Ronnie McKenzie are both in our main show. The other big show (which has Blaine Reed Meteorites and a couple others) is at the Holiday Inn hotel. [meteorite-list] Denver show, insults
Hi everyone. I have tonight received a terrible insult from someone I never expected it from, someone whom I have never done anything to. It seems that the fact that the Denver show had nothing new really pissed a seller off. I have every right to say what I saw there, as the question was asked on this list. Anyone who saw things differently of course, should respond as well. Again, I saw nothing there that is not for sale on ebay or at other shows, no new falls, no new finds, no bulk material other than LDG, Campo and Sikhote shrapnel, none new. Did I miss something? If so, let me know. If you don't like that facts, calling me names won't change them. I did have fun socializing with friends and customers, dinners, and lunches with people I have known a long time, so it is not all about business. Anyway, Munich is knocking on the door, and Tucson will be around the corner. Just disappointed to be hit so hard by someone I thought was a nice guy. I guess I was mistaken. Dear Listees: Greetings all. Returned late last night from the annual Denver show and, as always, the COMETS hosted some outstanding events, and a good time was had by all. A few days in Colorado during September makes a nice break from the Tucson heat, and it reminds me that other parts of the country actually do experience a fall season : ) The charity raffle raised over $12,000 for the people of Greensburg, KS, and the prize drawing was held Saturday night at the COMETS party. 5 of the 6 Greensburg volunteer committee were present, as were a good number of the prizewinners. Maria Haas and Anne Black kept a tally of all the winners, and everyone will be notified as soon as possible. Winners who were not present will have their prizes mailed to them at our expense. Speaking of Denver... If you clicked Anne's links you saw information and directions to the COMETS auction and their dinner party in Denver. As you saw in the second link, the COMETS have graciously allowed us to crash their yearly dinner party at 7:00 pm on September 15, 2007 at La Loma Mexican restaurant. They will supply some appetizers but you are responsible for your own food and drinks. As soon as everybody has had time to eat dinner and say hello, we will do the Greensburg Raffle. We would love to see you there! Tickets are still available and will be until the last minute. They are $10 each and you can buy them from us in Denver, via Paypal to [EMAIL PROTECTED], or by snail-mail to 410 Spring Street, Saline, MI 48176. If you choose the snail-mail route, please make sure your check or money order arrives on or before Saturday, September 15th. Those of you who cannot make it to Denver need not worry. If you can't hear us shout your name when we draw your winning ticket(s), you'll be hearing from us afterwards via email or telephone. Look at these incredible prizes! http://www.aerolite.org/events/greensburg-fundraiser.htm We all send our good wishes to the people of Greensburg and thanks to your generous donations, we have already raised over $9,500! Tickets or questions? Please don't hesitate to email me. Also, during the show I can be reached at (734)645-6037. [meteorite-list] Denver Show
Hello Everybody, Just in case you haven't noticed it yet, August is almost over, and the Denver Show is only 2 and a half weeks away. It will be here in no time at all!!! So for all of you who are coming to Denver I just put up my usual (hopefully) helpful pages on my website. There is one page for the Auction _http://www.impactika.com/7Auction.htm_ (http://www.impactika.com/7Auction.htm) and one for the Party _http://www.impactika.com/07Party.htm_ (http://www.impactika.com/07Party.htm) And I started to make a list of the items entered in the Auction, but that is a pretty short list. Thank you Art Ehlmann and Adam Hupe for responding to my request and sending me your lists. What about everybody else Mostly the COMETS members right here. I know that the Auction is mostly a social gathering, but without the Auction we don't have a excuse for the social gathering. So hurry, gather up a few things. One more thing: I will be very mobile during the Show, so if you are looking for me, the best will be to call my cell-phone: 303-503-9496. As usual let me know if you have any questions, or comments. See you all very soon. Anne M. Black www.IMPACTIKA.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] President, I.M.C.A. Hi All. Here are a couple small goodies that I picked up at the Denver show for my collection. As you all know larger Sikhote-alin are coming out few and far between now. These two are certainly not large (except in ebay description terms!!!). Anyway, the first one looks like it came apart along crystalline planes. There are 5 straight edges on this specimen which I have never seen before. Anyone else? http://www.catchafallingstar.com/sa10.htm The second one is even smaller but has lots of character. It looks like it has been frozen in flight much like the 475 gram specimen that I had years ago ( http://207.56.99.163/sa475.JPG ) http://www.catchafallingstar.com/sa7.htm Enjoy. There are not a lot of meteorites at the show, very little from Morocco, some very nice Campo's, a few goodies here and there, but today I scored a home run! I got hold of a 700 gram new Pallasite! It is a new one from Morocco, comprised mostly of crystals. It will be under analysis soon, and perhaps up for sale soon to those of yuo who collect Pallasites. As you all know, there are only 3 or 4 Pallasites from Morocco, Al Mahbas, one which I never saw for sale but Ali Hmani had, and my NWA 1911. I dont know of any others. [meteorite-list] Denver Show - LAST CALL!!!!
Hello, I am trying to get all the paperwork done ahead of time to speed up things before the Auction Friday. That means that if you are planning on putting anything in the Auction, I really would like to know, and I am sure that all the collectors who are coming would like to know too. And this is mostly for dealers: if you have a room, let me know where, and wh en you will be open for business. And I will add that to all the information already on my site. _http://www.impactika.com/shownews.htm_ (http://www.impactika.com/shownews.htm) See you all very soon. Anne M. Hello again, I am still trying to get as much information as possible on my site re. the Denver show, and I have been asked if I could give some indication as to where people will be. Certainly. However, first you need to tell me where you will be. So if you would like to be found by the rest of the Meteorite Community (at least those coming to Denver!) please send me a quick email with room number if you are a dealer, or cell phone number if you are a visitor wondering around. And I will add a page to http://www.impactika.com/shownews.htm with all that information. But hurry up. Less than 2 weeks! Thanks. Anne M. Dear List, I was wondering who all might be going to the Denver Gem and Mineral Show? I found Denver to be very fun because it much smaller than the Tucson show. You are more likely to run into meteorite collectors because there is a high concentration of them living in the area. All of the dealers and collectors I have met from Colorado are among the friendliest in the world. The meteorite auction on Friday night is a blast and the margarita party Saturday night is very entertaining plus it is an excellent opportunity to meet other List members. Don't forget about the ever popular nightly happy hours at Teddy's or is it Freddys?, I forget, Cocktail lounge (The infamous home of the "Denver Death Cookie") at the Holiday Inn. I have met all kinds of unsavory yet friendly types there. No more famous words will be remembered then when we were approached by a sauced patron in Teddy's who exclaimed, "Hey, I know you, you are that something something guy, right?" I will be attending the show from September 12th to the 19th even though it starts Wednesday the 14th. Hope to see you there. Hello List and Sonny, Sonny asked: "Can anyone recommend a good hotel to stay in that is nice, convenient to the show and may have rooms available?" I always stay at the Radisson Greystone Castle, which is a castle shaped four star (no late night room service or it would be five star) hotel about 10 miles from the Holiday Inn. The rooms are a little high here, ~$100, and you can find cheaper budget motels, not far from the action. 83 East 120th Avenue, Thornton, Colorado 80233. Phone: (303) 451-1002. Re: [meteorite-list] Denver Show - Part II
Dear Bill and List Members, I agree with Bill's statement, that is one of the reasons I have not been posting much to the List, lately. It seems some members are very sensitive to comments I have made and I do not want to encourage bad will. The Denver Death Cookie comments were intended for fun, not to insult anybody. I did not mention any names because that would be rude. I have been spending a lot of time in the field is the other reason I have not been posting much. I am tired of all of the attacks on the List and want to concentrate on more positive things. I just got back from searching for meteorites in sand dunes for five days with a Quad Runner at Moses Lake and found it very relaxing. I want to enjoy the good weather why it lasts before starting on the LunarRock.com web site, a major undertaking which will keep us busy for months. If I insulted anybody in the past please accept my apologies. Dear John and List Members, Even though it is off topic, enough people have asked what the heck a "death cookie" is? It is a drink with about five different types of liquor in it that tastes just like an oatmeal cookie. What makes it so dangerous is that you can not taste the booze in it. A hefty person will reach their retardation point at three feet altitude (about the height of a bar stool) after drinking about two of them. Hello list and Rob, Nice to see you in Denver Rob. I admit, middle age is a little strong. List members must remember I am still in my twenties...:-) Hope you didn't find flying international with meteorites any trouble. From experience the airport seems to act weird the third or fourth time you set off alarms. (Good change of subject Mark). [meteorite-list] Denver Show - Part I
Denver 2003 Report By Mark Bostick I usually choose to fly and then have one of my brothers meet me in Denver with a car to get around and get things home with. This year I chose just to drive in. Armed with the help of my brother, Johnny Bostick. I left Thursday evening choosing to stop along the way for the night close to the Colorado border. We made our way to a small motel in Colby, Kansas. Denver to Wichita is only a little over 500 miles, but our hotel reservations were not to Friday anyway. The bathroom had a sign telling guest not to clean kills in the bathtub. There was a location behind building 9 were kills could be cleaned. West Kansas is completely flat and a popular area for bird and deer hunters, I don’t imagine it took the motel long in business before drafting the sign. Colby was also the location of a meteorite find once, a small stone of only 2.4 kg. But it was enough to make me toss around the ideal of hunting in the morning. Instead we chose to get an early start Friday morning on Denver and getting to our hotel, the Radisson Greystone Castle. The Castle is located about 10 miles from the Holiday Inn - Best Western hotels were all the meteorite events are centered. It is also one of the better hotels in the area. But I think next year I will follow the lead of my fellow meteorite sellers and stay at the Holiday Inn. It will make getting back to the hotel after a night of possible drinking easier. Just use the elevator. Usually when I go to the mineral shows I don't make too many major purchases the first day. So other then a couple dozen mineral flats, I didn't buy much and non-meteorites don't really count. That made most of Friday a hello, hi, how are you doing, nice seeing you again day. My brother and me walked around the Holiday Inn and the Best Western rooms and tents looking for things to catch my eye while pricing minerals and fossils. Mostly, I just hung around Blaine Reed's room. Everyone can usually be seen at one time or another coming in or going out of Blaine's. He is the center point of the meteorite world at shows and to make it easy on us, always has the same room every year. Besides keeping us entertained and with a beer in hand if wanted, Blaine also does a good job at keeping his tables full of stuff to amuse us and tempt our pocketbooks. I walked away with a few meteorites and meteorite books including, Nininger first book, Our Stone Pelted Planet, and a platter size slice of Northbranch. This room was also temporary home of the Garza stone with all its glory. You really have to see the stone appreciate it. To me, it kind of looked like a giant Bensour, only kicked around a couple hundred times. Surrounding the stone were pieces of the house torn apart by the meteorite impact. The Garza stone was presented by Adam and Greg Hupe who also had a collection of riker mounted meteorites and Garza Impact Kits for sale. Adam and Greg gave out "Lunar Rock Team" badges to a number of people including myself. Complete with a Marvin the Martian photo and job titles. Mine noted me as a "Meteoritics Explorer", that I was a "VIP" and that the pass was for "All Access". Complete with a cord to put around my neck. Before the show was over, most of my fellow sellers were temporary members of the Lunar Rock Team and some of us would find out this was a good thing. AL Mitterling (of Mitterling Meteorites) is usually at the Denver show, and this year was no exception. Al and me had gone in together on a large end cut of SAH97095, a few months before the show. This is a nice H5 with shock veins and one of the first classified African desert meteorites. I picked up my slices at the show and they are just stunning. Several slices show on both sides a metal vein, up to 2 inches long and wide enough to be seen on of 5 slices. Thanks again Al for the nice work. I will have some photos of these metal veined slices soon. Until then, I have several very nice slices, some with lots of shock veins on my Website right now. (Sorry, had to squeeze a little Spam in here). Late Friday was the Comets/Michael Blood auction. Michael was the auctioneer and brought with him, his usual entertaining comments and auctioneer style. In the auction were a few things that caught my eye, including a handcrafted necklace. Sterling silver with a large wrapped moldavite as a pendent, and moon stone beads. This necklace was one of several that were entered by a cute young blond in her twenties. While only two of the necklaces sold in the auction, she did sell all but one while people were waiting to check out. These necklace sells had her obviously excited and made me smile a little. For my purchase I also got a hug. Lets hope she returns to our fold, our hobby could use more of a female presence...:-) Like the previous years the Comets provided a keg of local beer, along with wine, chips, and other snacks. Anne Black was kind enough to hang around the auction room (Dave Bunks Mineral Showroom...or something close
[meteorite-list] Denver Show - Part II
The best thing at the auction did not sell. Fred Hall provided a printing press used by Glenn Huss and Nininger on various publications. I think it would be nice if national meteorite displays showed more of the humanist aspect in meteorites and cant think of a better item to have showing. Fred Hall has always been a Nininger fan and with the press, but for display only was several things, including an old custom made briefcase once used by Nininger. Knowing Fred would be there with his Nininger items, I brought for him a brick from the ruins of Nininger's original museum and a postcard I made from a photo I told while there. Outside the auction a middle age man in leather jacket came up to me and quietly asked were the keg was. This man was Rob Elliott. The first Denver shows for Rob. Hope you enjoyed the show Rob and choose to come back next year. After the auction the keg was brought to Blaine Reed's room where it was finished off, something that is starting to become tradition with the auction keg. After the keg went dry and the cooler was made lighter, several of us ventured outdoors were cigars were shared. I'm not a big cigar fan, but several of the meteorite people smoke then and since it's kind of a Tucson/Denver tradition, I indulged. The Holiday Inn has a bar/restaurant and it was here my Lunar Rock Team badge was first tested. Four lines of people waited to get through the hotel lobby into the bar. By holding out our badges we were allowed to cut in front of everyone and not pay the cover charge to get in. Steve Drummond would find that by wearing his badge at the show, he saved $75.00 on a custom ring. After seeing the badge being taken by people as meaning something, I would wear the badge the rest the show. The bar was full of people and drinks were plentiful. Before I would finish one drink, one or two others would arrive in its place. One of these drinks was named the "oatmeal cookie". This drink did not agree with four of the people at the table, myself included. All should fear the oatmeal cookie. It's hard to go to the Denver or Tucson show and not pick through the piles of Sikhotes the Russians always seem to have. Usually I just pick a couple of the nicer pitted looking one, this time I decided to be different and picked through the oriented sikhotes. My time was soon rewarded with several small heat shields and a very cool double oriented meteorite. It has been said for a couple years that the Sikhote were getting harder to find. After asking about this, I was told that hunters were once finding several kilos a day is now finding "400 grams, if they are lucky." While I can not tell you if this is true or not, there were less people selling sikhotes at Tucson and Denver this year, then the year before. I avoided the Merchandise Mart on Friday because Friday is always kid day. The previous years found very few meteorites in this part of the show but the mineral displays and possible fossil bargains make it impossible to save away from. I started by first looking over the displays...get my drooling out of the way. These cabinets are always filled with would class specimens. Many organizations including the American National History Museum, colleges from around the United States and local mineral clubs, provided displays. They give ribbon awards but had yet to do so when I saw them. If I were the one giving the awards, the blue ribbon would go to a collection of later 1800 and early 1900 survey and mining equipment. These elaborate machines would often be made of hundreds of parts and look like something out of a mad scientist laboratory. No trip to the Merchandise Mart is complete without getting eaten by the Mr. Bones. Mr. Bones is a dinosaur skeleton costume wearing man that walks around and entertains the kids And adults. His big move is closing his jaws around his victim. Once again, I managed to live through it. One place I make sure to stop at the Merchandise Mart every year is Donald Hahn's booth. Donald sells books and excerpts in many science fields including meteorites. I tend to purchase a lot of meteorite books so I have known Hahn for several years now. A month before the show, he told me to stop by his booth, something I am very glad I did. To my delight, setting at Donald's booth was no other then Dr. Robert Bakker. Bakker is one of the world's most profile dinosaur paleontologists and is often a television guest. He sat in a chair drawling dinosaurs inside his books, while talking dinosaurs. His chair was next to the meteorite books so I soon found myself within conversation. I searched meteorite books while Dr. Bakker explained why Dinosaurs were warm-blooded to another customer and conversation changed to extinction. Bakker mentioned his dislike for the meteorite impact theory making the comment, "You don't find dinosaur bones at the K/T level." I could not help but mention the acid rain that would follow such an impact and therefore give away that I am pro-

Dear List Members, After going through over 300 emails since returning from Denver today I see a lot has been going on. I will address a few items that came up while we were away. NWA 1794 was submitted by us to NAU because a few dealers asked us to get a rapid classification for this stone. This is a beautiful stone that showed up in Morocco about two years ago. Since we wholesaled out over 20 Kilos we felt it was our responsibility to have it classified not knowing that it had been submitted to another lab, therefor there is more than one NWA number for this meteorite. As far as the shipping issues go, we ship everything priority. Most collectors who bid on our auctions buy on the average over five items. We combine all items in one box and only charge shipping once making for a safe, fast and cost effective delivery. Jim Strope mentioned some acquisitions he made at the show and I have to say these are world class specimens. Even though I got the chance to see these close up I hope Jim posts pictures so that others can enjoy viewing these specimens. Denver was an absolute blast and amazingly enough everybody got along and seemed to be having fun. Do not ask about the now infamous "Oatmeal Cookie" drinks served at Teddy's, the end result was not pretty for four consumers! We were very fortunate to acquire another planetary main mass and are working on another so I would say the show was successful for us even though we sold very little. The main thing is that virtually everybody we talked to had a great time despite the messy "Oatmeal Cookie" incidences. Will update more later when I recover from the lack of sleep. [meteorite-list] Denver Show Report
Dear Listees: I returned very late last night from the Denver show -- only a 13 hour door-to-door trip, thanks to runway construction at Newark, and a painfully slow six hour delay in Cincinnati. Despite that, and a crippling bout of hayfever while in Colorado, the show was most enjoyable -- thanks in part to my pal "Doc" Geoff Cintron who seems to have something for every emergency in that traveling Island Meteorite briefcase. As always, the Denver COMETS were great hosts, throwing their fourth annual meteorite auction (in association with auctioneer Michael Blood), and a fine party at La Loma, where once again the bravest of us tried to consume two (or more!) of the world's largest margaritas. I came home with a few nice new acquisitions including a lovely holed Campo -- on which, for some mysterious reason, I was the only bidder at the auction. Thanks are due to the stellar cast of meteorite folks in and around Denver, which includes Anne Black, Bill and Mike Jensen, Fred Olsen, Matt Morgan, Gary Curtiss, and especially Fred Hall for setting up the *original* Nininger/Huss printing press at the COMETS auction. This is an amazing historical item, complete with typefaces, unique American Meteorite Museum stamps, etc. We all hope that the press will someday find a home in a museum where it can be properly appreciated. Cheers also to Edwin "E.T." Thompson for generously donating several bottles of very fine wine -- every drop of which was rapidly consumed during the auction. I was a bit lax with picture taking this year, as I was pretty much under the weather all weekend, but I do have a few nice shots, which I will post shortly. Hello everyone from Denver. We are all having a blast here. Jim Strope, the Jensens, Anne Black, Hupes, Bostick, Reeds, everyone is here! Not an angry word has been said, just alot of beer and margeritas have been consumed. Nothing new is available at the show, but some surprizes did turn up. Just wanted to say hi and that all in Denver are having a blast. The Michael Blood/Comets auction went well tonight, alot of fun and some smoking deals. Mike Farmer
Re: [meteorite-list] Denver show info?
Hi Jamie, I am sure you will hear more soon from the Denver meteorite club called The Comets.. meanwhile, I can tell you I am doing an auction with The Comets on Friday evening and they always throw a "no host" party at a cool Mexican restaurant with the world's largest Margueritas, so, that will most certainly be Sat. evening. Denver is a LOT like Tucson, with the main difference beeing FAR fewer meteorite collectors attending but more than half the meteorite sellers. So, as a collector, you are WAY better off at Denver in terms of a "buyers' market" situation. Also, there tends to be a more "intimate" feel, since there are so fewer people and folks end up hanging out and having a beer in Blaine's room or whatever. It feels far less hectic than Tucson. Part of that is that almost everyone is in one motel and all the rest are across the street in another motel, so, there isn't the racing around you have in Tucson. Also, there are not so many other fossil and mineral dealers - Tucson is so big you couldn't walk in and right out of all the rooms in a week - in Denver, you can do it in one day. Hello List, Just a short reminder that the Denver show is less then 3 months away. While I have found there is plenty of lodging in Denver...you could show up without any hotel/motel plans and get a room no problem. Plane tickets are likely cheap right now through services such as www.priceline.com and its competitors, and it's a good time for those with families and demanding jobs to make plans. [meteorite-list] Denver Show, Nininger/Huss Irons for Sale
Dear List members, Allan Lang will be attending the Denver, Colorado rock and fossil show next week. He will have a selection of fine meteorites available for sale, including exceptional historic Canyon Diablo irons. These are numbered pieces from both H.H. Nininger and Glenn Huss, and come from an old private collection. They are in original condition with desert patina and vintage hand-painted collection numbers. Irons of this quality, and with this historic pedigree are very rarely offered for sale. In addition, Allan will have unusual fossils on display, and professional SS White air abrasion equipment used for the cleaning and preparation of fossils and meteorites. You can find Allan set up alongside Custom Paleo in the main fossil show (Merchandise Mart), right in front of the stage, at the bottom of the stairs. The tables are not numbered, but we are #23 on the floor plan. If you will be attending the Denver show, please stop by and say hello. The following is a partial list of material that will be available: Whole oriented stones Ordinary Chondrites: LL,L,H and breccias Completely crusted Bensour stones Carbonaceous Chondrites: CR,CV and COs R Chondrites Eucrites: 3 different types Diogenite Martian Orthopyroxene-bearing Nakhlite (NWA 998) Martian Shergottites (DAG 476) and (NWA 1110) Martian Olivine-phyric Shergottite (NWA 1195), first time offered to the public Lunar highland breccias (DAG 262) and (DAG 400) Lunar original lunar crustal example (NWA 482) Giant Gibeon: "The Gator" - 53 kg(117 Lbs.) Giant classified stoneys and much much more... We will be answering questions about NWA 998 (unique Nakhlite) and NWA 1195 (the most primitive Martian lava yet discovered). We will also be displaying the NWA 1195 planetary main mass. If you are there, you should try to see this main mass before it is cut to satisfy the scientific community. For insurance reasons we will not be able to display our NWA 482 or NWA 998 main masses. We may try and sneak out another rare main mass for public viewing before it is cut anymore. This main mass represents the rarest of all classifications in private hands. This is the only one in the private sector and it weighs less than 40 grams. It is by far the hardest type sample to acquire. Sorry for the suspense, we just found out its classification a few days ago and want to savor the moment. Best regards, Adam and Greg Hupe The Hupe Collection IMCA #2185

Fred Hall , who is one of the Denver Comets and an illustrador for Voyage!, was in the area that was labeled "Meteorite Hall" and was selling a varity of offerings. He carried many hard to find meteorite books and several specimans for collectors of different budgets. Fred and his girlfriend were very pleasant and friendly. One of the items for sale here was a nice dinosaur painting that a kid had tried to buy for $5.00. Sorry, the painting was $495.00, not $4.95. On display but not for sale where a few meteorites..I think all Sikhotes...that had neat shapes. One looked very much like a bear and another make the perfect bottercap opener and shows meteorites can be usefull household tools. I give Fred Hall the award for "Friendliest Meteorite Seller in Denver 2001". Not far from Hall was Jensen's Meteorites, Mike and William Jensen. Mike Jensen, a very good people person, was manning the booth while William Jensen could be found wandering the show. Here I picked up a case of small generic rikers ($1.90 each), a few micromounts and a Handbook to North Dakota Meteorites ($7.00). The Jensen's had a shelfcase of meteorite books for sale including a couple Hardbound Rocks From Space, The Catalog of Meteorites, Nininger's Out of the Sky and several others. For this effort they receive the award for "Best Collection of Meteorite books at the Denver 2001". A meteorite book collector I am unsure how I walked out of there. Something that should not have been missed by fellow meteorites collectors were several cabinet displays by two of the Comets members. One display by Fred Hall had a very nice selection of Colorado Meteorites which included thin sections and polarized photos. While Andrew Abraham displayed a well rounded collection of stones, achondrites, aubrites, iron, stony-irons along with a nice moon speciman. This area was mostly without meteorite dealers so it was back to the Holiday Inn where I mostly just "hung around" the dealer rooms untill it was time to go to the party. Prices around the show as follows: Meteorite Thin Section starting at $40.00, Gubara everywhere for $0.50 to $1.00 a gram. Esqual in small polished slices for $35.00 a gram. Imilac polished slices $25.00 a gram. Cape York a low $2.50 a gram. Breham $3.00 to $5.00 a gram. Kapeto (Howardite) $600.00 a gram, Allende $5.00 to $8.00 a gram, Canyon Diable $.75-$1.00 a gram, Gibeon $0.50-1.00 a gram, unclassified numbered NWA's $0.45 a gram, classified $.50 to $1.00 depending on weathering grade and dealer. Tektites varied greatly in price. Rizzite Tektites at $.50 a gram for dumbdells and $1.00 a gram for large spheres. Lots of Sikhote-Alin with price ranges from $.30 a gram to $2.00 a gram depending on shape, size, and what dealer room you were in. Moon specimans where at a new low of $3,000 a gram and Mars specimans starting at $280.00 a gram. (Just think gold is around $10.00 a gram.) Meteorite Impactite was almost missing from the show, ( I saw one Beaverhead shattercone and Sudbury slices but no others.) No australites. Very little of the once common metals (Gibeon, Canyon Diablo, and Odessa). Two most common things...yep you guess it Sikhote's and African meteorites. Look for it to remain that way for a while. Saturday night it was the party at La Loma's. Chips, dip, and other mexican finger food were provided by the Comets. We had two rooms saved, but managed to all squeeze in one. This was a great chance for everyone to chat. I did not hear New York brought up even once, but I am sure it was on all of our minds. La Loma's is well known for their Margarita's and I now know why. Their large ones are at least 32 oz. The food was slow and good but I could eat very little. Fred Hall with daughter and girlfriend, along with Dean Bessey sat by me and my brother at one end of the longest table. Down the table seats were filled with many well known meteorite dealers. Hall's girlfriend seemed very nice and his daughter helped entertain us with her mexican jumping bean. At one point the daugther asked me if I like "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". In which I replied by singing a chorus of the Oompa Loompa chat, in which she joined along. We were also entertained by one of the party attendee's standing on the table and saying "Hey everybody watch this." He then proceeded to blow up a skinny balloon over two feet long. After insuring he had our attention, which wasn't hard, he forced the ballon down his month. Gulfing down the last of it, he annouced "Anybody who would like to see the balloon come out come back in 3 hours and pay $10.00." The party was now starting to part and I was tired while my brother was wanting to go dancing so we called it a night. Sunday was finishing deals and backtracking where I picked up several more items including , small Nantans, trilobites, about 10 kilos of morrocans,.and packing the car for our return trip. The trip is an 8 hour drive and

Two meteorite A to Z books where specially signed and inscribed for the event. Anne Black, William Jensen and Mike Jensen each signed and made several notes inside. Such as Mike's: Coments Auction 2001 Mike Jensen 9/14/01 "the auctioneer". One book went for $15.00 while the other went (to me) for $20.00. Free drinks and eatibles where provided by the Comets. Many of us stood around and talked trying our best to forget the tuesday before. I believe all enjoyed themselves and a portion of the sales is being donated to different charities so we managed a little good as well. After we parted from the auction it was now late so off we were off to get a room. I had cancelled a room I had reserved because of everything this last week. Unlike Tuscon however., there is lots of housing in Denver. The only worry being the airport was yet up to speed and many where still stuck in town. We did manage to find a room not far from all the action. The hotel we stayed at boasted proudly $19.95 rooms. Somehow they were $42.95 but it was fair as they were clean and was in good location for us. The morning light woke me up around 7:00am. I guessed it to be 8:00am and would have been correct had I been in Kansas, which is one time zone over. I played with the specimans I got the day before and made notes untill my brother woke up. After breakfest and a brief tour around the football stadiums for photos it was back to the Holiday Inn. Now it is 9:00am, people were starting to open the tents outside the hotel bordering the parking lot and behind the building. Most of the rooms where now open and I wandered around a little picking up a couple items here and there. Many meteorites and tektites where to be found on the 3rd floor and I spent several hours within its halls. I collect a lot of the African meteorites and Dean Bessey was by far the NWA man in Denver. Among the table of the new NWA869 L4 I found a very nice 4700 gram oriented individual with great regmylsts pitting and almost complete crust with the exception of the lee side, I couldn't help picking up a couple extra kgs for selling and trading. Among the room was two areas with thin sections, Imilacs, morrocans, some nice ammonites, Sudbury impact slices, and more. For Dean's effort he gets the "Most NWA Meteorites in Denver 2001" and the "Best Selection of Thin Sections in Denver 2001" awards. Several foriegn meteorite dealers where attending the show, including Hans Koser, who had a lot of African offerings, some very large Campos with nice pitting. I picked up some Bendego and some Santa Cararina before making my way into other rooms. One of the russian dealers had Sikhotes in almost every direction. This was a great chance for me to pick out a few hundred grams of small Sikhote-Alins from many, many kilograms. They also had a what I believe was the main mass of DAG200. A meteorite with an unusal shape that reminds everyone who sees it as.well the male organ. This item was also in the auction the night before and failed to receive the opening bid of $200.00. It did however get a quite a few laughs. Premiering here where several new moon rocks and carbonacous. Eduardo Jawerbaum's room was filled with a lot of very nice offerings. Some complete or main mass SAH's. A display full of Pallisites including a nice Esquel slice over 1.6 kg had a large area of almost complete olivine. Moon, Mars, Howardites and many other rare offerings to empty your wallet filled another case. Eduardo did the best job at having all the well known meteorites (Gibeon, Gao-Genie, Imilac, Allende, Odessa, ect) as well as the more expensive items like Kopeta, Zagami, and Gloria Mountain. An eye grabbing offering here was a 12 kilogram slice of the Argentina Rio Limay stone meteorite. I give Eduardo the award for "Best varity of Meterites at Denver 2001". Somehow among all these items it was his minerals that caught my eye and I walked out with several flats. Okay we wheeled out several flats. My brother also managed a trade for some Chassigny, something I thought was unusual since the auction that Friday was where he bought his first meteorites. Also to be found lerking around the 3rd floor was none other then the Meteorite Man himself, Robert Hagg. Robert Hagg was very friendly and posed for a pichure with me. He seems to be a very positive person and is a good spokeperson for our hobby. Big deals where in the background and few even saw Hagg. For his efforts I give Hagg the "Hinding in the Background Denver 2001" award. Several of us sellers stood around the hallway talking as big wheels where turning. Back to Dean Bessey's room for a couple MGD longnecks, my choice of beer and apparently his as well. Then off to the second floor... Blaine Reed and Bruno Fectay where the spotlights of the second floor. Blaine Reed was a quiet guy that had a lot of nice items at fair prices. He had many US meteorite slices for the most par

Hello List, With the Denver show coming up I thought I would post the article I wrote that was published in Voyage Meteorite and Space Events magazine last year. If you have not made plans to attend the show and can I would suggest going. I had a lot of fun last despitewell...Sept. 11th. Thanks, Mark Bostick Colorado Mineral & Fossil Show and the Denver Meteorite No-Prize Awards! by Mark Bostick "The Big Collector" The week of the Denver Meteorite Show promised to be a pleasant one. Unfortunly, Tuesday morning a series of passenger planes hijacked by a terrorist group where crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon killing thousands. The falling of the second Trade Tower made this disaster even worst as rescue and firefights had just gathered under it. This was the sour setting for Denver 2001. Thursday... After a complete grounding of airplanes shorlty after attacks began 2 days prior, air traffic was offically opened in America at 11:00am. However, airlines are slow getting started and my 6:45pm flight was cancelled. Luckly, I was able to book an early flight for the next morning. Friday morning. 6:00am, After standing in a United Airlines line for 2 hours I was informed my plane had been cancelledagain. From my understanding United Airlines grounded all flights till monday. (or at least they did here in Wichita, Kansas). Since I purchased my ticket through Priceline.com it was non-transferable. Bad airline people...they could have at least answered their phone, which was off the hook and saved me the trip done here. 11:00am: I have recruited my brother, Bradley Bostick, and we have rented a car and are now on our way to Denver. The 2nd Annual COMETS meteorite auction is tonight. I am hoping to make good time and not miss it but was fearing we would. My brother was fearing his girlfriend would kill him for leaving for the weekend without "permission". Kansas, the state where I live, is right next to ColoradoThe crossing city is Kansorado. Two detours, seven hours and about 515 miles later, we arrived in Denver. The country is still in mourning and about 1 in 15 cars, trucks and vans that we passed or passed us, carried flags or patriotic messages. You could tell when we reached Denver as it started raining. After following a misleading map we made it in the area near the auction house but could not find the right building. Asking a truck driver, kind enough to come over to our car for directions, he told us we were at the wrong building. Something that was obvious. After driving in a couple circles we now found a group of hispanic warehouse workers. However none of these spoke any english. Just before we threw up our hands, we drove down a driveway and found the right place. It was now 6:20pm and auction doors have just opened. The auction house, The showroom of Dave Bunk, is empty except for Ginger Mayfield and a couple of the Colorado Meteorite Club members, or COMETS. Leaving out of plan I didn't bring anything with me, I had nothing to register and it appeared at least an hour before anything was to happen here. We decided to leave and come back.We passed the main meteorite place, the Holiday Inn on the way to the auction and now made a quick backtrack. A Russian seller with hand made necklaces composed of magnets blocked my path. In a hey old buddie drunken like manner he hussled me over to his table. Here I was fitted with a bracelet that I was told would cure cancer among other ailments. They did look nice but my brother was more interested in the jewelry then I was. I play around computers too much to wear magnets. After a brief walk around and a couple small purchases and it was back to the auction. Now a lot of people have gathered. The Denver comets, Anne Black (Impactika), Fred Olson, Mike Jensen (Jensen Meteorites), Mike Farmer, Steve Arnold (MeteoriteBroker), Jim Strope, Dean Bessey (The Meteorite Shop), Eduardo Jawerbaum (Meteorites.com, or at least for the moment, hush hush), Eric Olson, and many others stood around friendly chatting. The planned auctioneer Michael Blood was not able to attend after the airport closed in San Diego. Mike Jensen took over the job well and good deals were plentiful. Bidding numbers were distibuted and I recieved bidding number 1. A number that had to be luckyright? COMETS, Anne Black and Ginger Mayfield shuffled most of the papers and my brother helped by showing around the items while they were being bidded on. Other COMET members passed drinks when needed and stood around taking up space. The garage like room with a frame of mineral bearing tables was filled with over thirty people. Mike Jensen would describe each item and give its price. Then he would mumble a little and compute the grams per a dollar. I made what seemed like a million bids but got out owing much less then I thought I would. Dean Bessey entered several morrocans, a couple of the NWA869 and

Dear Fellow associates of sky rocks; Here is a very nice link: http://www.peaktopeak.com/minerals/nfeffco/2002/sept02.htm and it will get you to the show on time. Also located there are clubs and activities for a number of months in the state of Colorado. I think the promoters and organizers may be located from other pages there too.
