Re: [meteorite-list] EBAY SCAM ALERT - balogne_t - Attn: DEALERSBLOCK HIM NOW

2012-12-27 Thread Richard Montgomery

Hi List,
I am currently awaiting response for receipt of a sale from the recipient in
the Russian Federation for a small but nice Sikhote Alin batch they
purchased (hey! a reverse fall!)...and based upon their ebay feedback
numbers being very small, they asked for a tracking number. Of course, as
is being discussed here, international delivery confirmations rest solely
upon the recipient's word.

Our local US Postal rep (whom I respect), upon being asked "Since Delivery
Confirmation isn't available for international deliveries, how can I be sure
if and when it arrives?" the response was: "When they tell you it did."

At which point I promptly took a picture of the package and
receipt-generated, containing the US Customs "number".(I have no idea
how worthy this will be in an ebay court-of-appeals), and sent the pictures
back to the buyer who seemed pleased, leaving it in the (currently) hands of
the US Customs officebut that also potentially opens up a new can of
worms.

Needless to say, international sharing of our precious space material has
been working for decades. I'm hoping to hear from some of you with years of
experiences...

Great info Chris. As you stated tracking ends when it reaches Customs. My
question to all this is, at which point does the Seller not become
responsible any more. Since it can be proved that tracking made it to at
least Customs, then this means the package was at one point officially in
the the hands of say USPS, FedEx, UPS, ect. which are businesses who get
paid by us, for a service they offer, and that service is delivery. That
responsibility should become the Delivery Service Provider once money is
exchanged between parties. ALWAYS send delivery confirmation here in the
U.S. It's cheap to send with delivery confirmation and now you have proof
it was delivered! Even if the Provider delivered the "meteorite" to the
wrong address, is that not the fault of the Provider!? Is it fair that a
Seller be responsible at that point?
Now if sending from U.S. to Internationalyou ALWAYS have to fill out a
Customs Declaration. You hold onto the part that the Provider stamps and
gives back to you. That is proof you paid a Provider for a service they
offer, and the package is now in their hands. So at that point the issue
of lost, stolen, or never delivered, can be proven by either Delivery
confirmation and or via the Customs Declaration Label. You would think
eBay would have this figured out and would just tell the Buyer to wait
another 7 days before acting and returning money to the Buyer.

*
Now that we know the Provider is responsible, What are the obligations of
a Seller to a Buyer, when clearly the proof shows that the Provider was
paid, but did not do their job. I have been fortunate to not have an issue
with proving that I sent out the package via a Provider and or an eBay
Buyer trying to scam me. Can any Sellers ping in on how far to accept
responsibilty as a Seller and to what measures you would take to the
Buyer.

Hi Listers:

Anne is right - mail to Canada can take up to 2 weeks to arrive. That is
14-17 Working Days (don't count weekends or holidays).
Padded envelopes can be a bit quicker - boxes can take longer as Canada
Customs can dip their grabby fingers into those.
I usually make a query to the seller after about 18-21 working days have
passed since the item was mailed by the seller. Best to
tell customers when package was actually mailed. Tracking numbers do
help, but tracking by USPS stops, after the package reaches

the Canadian Border Boonies and fades/merges into our Postal System.

As someone else mentioned recently in that other fishing thread, NO legit web
site, not Paypal, not
Ebay, not Amazon, NOBODY, will EVER send you an e-mail with a link that you
have to click to enter
account information. If you get an e-mail like that, it is a scam one hundred
percent of the time.
Valid businesses will tell you to go to the site and log on and enter the
information.

I would also suggest to you and everyone to TURN OFF all html and xml and
Active-X and every single
other feature in e-mails than plain text and only plain text. There are just
too many ways people
can get into your system with e-mails that contain html or other components,
even if you do not
click on the items. Anything more than plain ASCII text in e-mails is
pointless and dangerous.

[meteorite-list] Ebay scam emails from my auctions

2005-04-06 Thread Michael Farmer
Hi everyone
A warning here, all the bidders on my recent achondrite and CO3.1 seem to be
getting fake emails today, telling them that the items are available for a
lesser price than the selling price.
These emails are not from me, and they don't even pretend to be, but they
ask the buyer to send them money.
Please be careful about any such emails and scams, use your head, if the
emails don't come from the seller, something is not right and alarms should
be going off in your head.
They have been reported to eBay, but I assume that other people will get the
same scam for high $$$ items.
Be careful.

I received some disturbing information today.
It is regarding the large flight-oriented meteorite that sold this week.
One of the losing bidders received an offer from someone in the UK who
claimed to be me, and who offered the person a second chance to buy it,
saying that he high bidder had cancelled. Of course, this is not true, the
buyer already has the stone and is pleased with it.
This is a scam, someone trying to get a losing bidder to send money by
western union to get the item.
They are looking for high-$$$ items and trying to get the lower bidders to
send money. Luckily the person emailed knows me and confronted the scam
artist.

Hi Mike and all,

This has happen to a couple of my high dollar auctions also, as well as one I
bid on one time from another well known dealer. Not the same person but it must
be a way of scamming people as you said and it's good to put out a notice when
it happens with meteorite sales.

Ebay did precious little to investigate, even though I was acting like I wanted
the item and was going to send a payment on to them. The email account was

auctions. Seemed that he was unsure of a ceiling bid and kept putting in more
bids on the same auction, essentially bidding against himself, (did that
myself the first time out).
He or she will learn. :-)

Tom,
What happens when a meteorite collector discovers ebay? They go
bonkers! I've seen it happen many times. Sometimes they're new to
meteorites, in which case they often overpay. If he's new to
meteorites, he'll eventually find other venues to acquire meteorites. If
they already collect meteorites, and are simply new to ebay, eventually
he'll calm down. Probably not a list member, and no harm is done
writing to this person and inviting him/her to join the list. I've done
so in the past and they're usually grateful to learn the meteorite-list
community exists where they can learn more. You might try this. Just
don't comment on his/her spending habits so as not to be accused of
interfering with an auction.
Best,
Charlie

[meteorite-list] eBay scam

2002-08-15 Thread Dave Harris

H. any one else out there get eBay's "wireless notifications" where the
outbid or completed auction dfetails are texted to their mobile phone?

I subscribed once, ages ago, and turned the service off as I discovered that
it was far from free - it costs about $0.25 for each message.
Well, interestingly enough, it "randomly" turns itself back on - it has
happened several times and I am not pleased with it - seems like a pretty
good revenue generator to me.

To whom should I address this issue?

Any ideas?
very best from a hot and humid Brighton!
