[meteorite-list] Google down? Sort of on-topic.

2009-01-31 Thread Jeff Kuyken

Hi all,

Does anyone know what's going on with Google? I went to search for a
meteorite and EVERY site is showing up as a potential risk to your computer.
All of the well known meteorite sites have the following warning under the
main title:

This site may harm your computer.

You end up at an interstitial Google page and you can't get past it to the
webpage. You have to put the URL into the address bar yourself. In fact it's
not limited to meteorites and the ONLY site I've seen so far that doesn't
seem to have this result is Google! It's happening on Google US and
Australia. Is anyone else getting this?

Cheers,

Jeff

Yes. Looks like Google is broken. For some of the sites, when I manually
enter the page my browser (Firefox) brings up a warning page as well-
something I've never seen before.

(However, even as I write this, the problem seems to have gone away...)

It's fixed already! Thanks to all those who mailed off-list. Seems google's
searching crashed for a short while... and then half their site with people
trying to contact them!

Jeff

A rather interesting excuse in view of the fact that Yahoo had the same
problem at exactly the same time. What, the guy who screwed up the works for
Google works for both corporations?
