[meteorite-list] Is this guy out of line or is that just me?

2007-06-26 Thread Bill
Hi all,

The ebay meteorite scams are getting worse... I've heard a few complaints about
NW African dealers... I think the latter has a greater potential for abuse.
They
used to spam us with lots of common chondrites. Now it's unclassified
planetaries, howardites, etc.

I think this type of claim is as crazy, even worse, more tempting than most of
the ebay goofs.

Bill

Re: [meteorite-list] Is this guy out of line or is that just me?

2007-06-26 Thread Norbert Classen
Dear Bill & All,

You're certainly not out of line, at least not if we are talking about the
same alleged "lunar meteorite". I've seen pretty much all of them, and the
photo of the rock in question didn't look remotely like a good candidate to
me...

Besides that, I'm getting a lot of similar offers with questionable
unclassifieds that are presented as "100% lunar", "same-same", or "sure
martian"... At the Ste. Marie show last weekend I have been offered pieces
of a "lunar" that sure looked like a probable pairing of the impact-melted
eucrite NWA 3159. At a ridiculous price. I told the seller that I was sure
that this wasn't a lunar but an eucrite, but he insisted on his own
"expertise", and kept on advertising it as a "new lunar find". And this was
one of the better "deals" around...

There are some exceptions, of course, but you're always taking a high risk
with unclassified stuff as many of these alleged "planetaries" turn out to
be from our own planet Earth, even if the resemble a shergottite or an
anorthositic breccia. Caveat emptor!

Best,
Norbert

2007-06-26 Thread Adam Hupe
Now that trade has opened up with China, there is an
extreme amount of fraud going on eBay. The gemstone
market is in shambles because of the Chinese fakes,
now they are selling meteorites. Nearly 100% of the
meteorites on eBay from Chinese dealers are iron ore.
It has now spread to Chinese dealers in San Fransisco
as well. The Chinese know that they are committing
fraud but just don't give a s__t!

The Moroccans, on the other hand, are becoming
increasingly sneaky. They will send a sample of a
real Martian meteorite and then send a load of crap
which you will never see a refund on. A couple of
Moroccan fraudsters were even pictured at the last
meteorite show as can bee seen by the postings to the
List.

I now refuse to buy from either one!

Best Regards,

Adam

Adam,
Your opinions are always respected, but please when you are talking about
"Moroccans dealers" tell the names or shut up, if you realy faced that type of
problems( I have doubts if you did) with someone, tell his name. one thing
logic is that you are trying to shut us down and none would buy from us because
we compete you, WE OFFER GREAT DEALS, simply you are touching our reputations,
and this is a modest comercial tactic.

Wherever you go, there must be honest and dishonest people.

== I now refuse to buy from either one! == Oh my God, we are all going to die,
because MR Adam who puts food on our tables.

Aziz,

Please see the first post that initiated this thread. It's about a dealer that insists he's selling a lunar meteorite based on nothing at all. Do you defend this type of solicitation?
