[meteorite-list] Meteorite Contest #7 - Free 2.3g Tatahoine

2002-09-22 Thread Mike Reynolds

Hi Mark and List,
The wildest/strangest and funniest thing that I ever heard after having
shown my meteorites to someone came from my niece, who commented; Those
black ones came out really ugly. Want me to paint them a prettier color for
you? Best Regards, Mike Reynolds I.M.C.A. #8127

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Contest #7 - Free 2.3g Tatahoine (Help forRafael!)

2002-09-21 Thread Rafael B. Torres

Hello Everyone¡Im still having problems with my account, I sent 2 mails
to the list, but they are not arriving¡¡¡, I hope this will do¡...First of
all I want to thanks to all that have replied my mails helping with my
questions And second I want to make my entry for the contest:

I went to a small town near here and I had my Canyon Diablo with me, so I
saw a rock shop and there was this man selling rocks, I showed him the
meteorite and told him that it was a meteorite, so he could look for
anything like that in his stock of rocks. He saw it and as if meteorites
were very common and as if he had seen many of them he said: Sure thats a
meteorite, I have a big one in my backyard¡¡¡, about a hundred kilos I was
surprised for the unsual answer. But of course he took me to the backyard
just to find out that he had a huge piece of hematite or magnetite. I spent
the next minutes trying to explain him that it was not a meteorite, but for
him its still a meteorite that worths several thousand pesos¡.

Another time I had my Gao with me in the school and I decided to take it to
my Chemestry teacher, I told him that the meteorite was fresh with a nice
fusion crust, I told that I bought it from the internet. He looked at it
carefuly and said: How much was that?: they robbed you, its not a
meteorite...meteorites are always round and heavy. He showed me several
meteorites he had, but it was just hematite¡, he told me he bought
those in the place where they fell (Zona del Silencio) and that they were
pretty cheap around $2 each individual. Since then Ive been trying to
explain him that those are just meteorwrongs, but he doesnt pay attention,
and one more time he thinks he has the real meteorites.

As you can see around here there are a lot of meteorwrongs and the education
around here says that those are meteorites from la Zona del Silencio,
actually you can find thousands of them around here and everyone here has
several of them, so most people here in my city have a meteorite¡¡¡(Hows
that?)but of course its just hematiteBut they think they are
meteorites¡Meteorites are a common rock here¡¡¡

2002-09-20 Thread Mike Groetz

Hello List-
One of my first meteorites I purchased was Saratov.
When I proudly showed it to my wife- her first comment
was:
Why would you buy that? I can get you all you want
from our driveway! (We have a white limestone
driveway...)

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Contest #7 - Free 2.3g Tatahoine

2002-09-19 Thread Steven Schoner

Having been a National Park Service ranger at Sunset
Crater Volcano for many years one of the things that
got very old was the confusion between Meteor Crater
and Sunset Crater

Often we would be asked, Where is the crater? and
how was that mountain (the volcano) formed by a
meteor?

No relation-- obviously...

Well, one day after who knows how many questions as to
where is the meteor crater... I got this from one
visitor.

Is this place where the volcano hit and formed a huge
crater a mile wide...

Needless to say, I roared out laughing, after
experiencing years of the Sunset-Meteor Crater
confusion

The visitor was straight faced, not comprehending my
amusement.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Contest #7 - Free 2.3g Tatahoine (Help for Rafael!)

2002-09-19 Thread Mark Fox

September 19, 2002

Greetings Mr. Rafael B. Torres!

First, allow me to mention that this mailing list has
an archive for searching for old messages.

As for what Contest #7 is about, read the following
e-mail sent by Mark Bostick to hep clear things up
regarding that matter. I hope it will be of some
help for you and possibly others.

Hello All,

Sorry about that. i wrote the e-mail and cut and
paste the Mikes response. But I sent it before I did
so. I then resent the corrected, but it didnt show
up. The list is funny sometimes.

Any...here was Mike's entry.

Thanks again, Mark

Hi Mark:

My entry... for contest #7: When you have shown
someone your meteorite(s), what's the
wildest/strangest comment or question you've been
asked?

  Mike

For some strange reason, I think your past e-mail came
close to being an entry in itself! Amazing!

Long strewn fields!

2002-09-19 Thread SSachs9056

Hi Mark and List,

Re: Meteorite Contest # 7.
The wildest comment came to me some years ago, when I asked my wife what she
would do my metorite collection, if and when I kicked the bucket and went to
the great strewnfield in the sky.

She replied without blinking an eye, I suppose they would look nice in a
rock garden. Yipes!

After that, I changed my willdonating the entire collection to the
Kalamazoo Michigan, (where I grew up) Planetarium / Museum. ...a rock
garden...(sigh)
