[meteorite-list] Meteorite Show Lights Up Tasmania

2003-06-19 Thread Ron Baalke

Meteorite show lights up Tasmania
The Age (Australia)
June 19, 2003

A meteorite is believed to be responsible for a spectacular celestial
light show in Tasmania.

The Tasmania Police switchboard was inundated just after 8pm (AEST)
Wednesday, with callers from the state's north and south reporting a
trail of blazing light across the night sky.

Seen from airport towers in Hobart and Launceston, it slipped under
the radar of many local astronomers.

University of Tasmania astrophysicist Dr Kym Hill, who is holidaying
in the tiny north-eastern town of Mathinna, said he caught a fleeting
glimpse of a bright yellow flash about 8.45pm.

I probably only saw the end of it - the last 30 degrees of its
trajectory which maybe lasted for two seconds, he said.

It disappeared about 10 or 15 degrees off the horizon.

He said it was probably a meteorite.

It may have even been a satellite breaking up while re-entering the
earth's atmosphere, Dr Hill said.

Retired astrophysicist Dr John Greenhill, who missed the show, said he
had been told about numerous sightings of bright lights followed by a
sonic boom.

It sounds very much to me like a meteorite entered the atmosphere and
possibly even landed, he said.

It's just an extreme example of a falling star.

I have only ever seen one or two in my lifetime.

They are not all that common.

Most of the so-called falling stars are actually meteorites.

They often burn out before they hit the ground.

list, when everyone gets together in Tucson, we put aside our differences
(mostly) and get along wonderfully. You just took a few hits
because of your statement that Norton actually spreads viruses in order to
sell anti-virus software. You can't announce that the Earth is flat and
expect to remain bullet-proof. "Don't do the crime if you can't do the

about now. ;-)Anyway, c'mon to Tucson and you'll see

Okey, dokey.guess I've really been put in MY place!!

End of thread, or in this case, filament. Nothing humorous to add, as I surely must defer to the unparalled wit above.

And speaking of meteorites...;-)

That's ok, the list will forgive you for being
so dumb, there's a lot of that going around. So, are you
obsessed with Clinton, or what? You keep bringing him up even
though it doesn't have anything to do with anything. Are you insinuating
that because I was critical of an absurd statemnt that YOU made, that somehow
that means I must like Clinton or something? Strange logic. No, on
second thought, NO logic. I'm really curious why the
Clinton-connection is something you seem compelled to attach to
me.You'll notice I took this off-list to avoid any more embarrassment
for you. Many of the list-regulars have been circulating hilarious
emails to each other, away from the list, about the notion of Norton inventing
viruses, so you might want to cut your losses and stop peprpetuating this
nonsense. If you want to continue to be ridiculed, that's up to
you, but it reminds me of the old saying, "Never try to teach a pig to
sing. It wastes your time and it annoys the pig".

Actually, the bunny-turds have been completely searched out because several new British restaurants have opened in Holbrook. ;-)

[meteorite-list] Meteorite show?

2002-10-14 Thread Tom / james Knudson

I was just thinking, it would be fun, if its not already a "thing" to have a show or a get together once a year at Meteor Crater. A list meteorite meet.Or our own show.A chance for every one to meet and spend some time talking meteorites. Has this been done?

Thanks, Tom

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite show?

2002-10-14 Thread almitt

Hi Tom,

We usually do this in Tucson or Denver. There are a lot of get together(s) and both
collectors and dealers make several parties. Probably the biggest is at Jim Kriegh's
house in Tucson. I don't know if the Crater people would be receptive to us converging
on the Crater for a meeting. I rather doubt it but we could have the meeting not far
from there in Holbrook. Who knows you might find someone there picking up bunny
droppings or worst :-)

While on the subject, why not have a meteorite hunting party before or after the
Tucson Show?? Wonder out in the desert and see if anyone could find a new meteorite.
Just a thought.

Al,
some of us are there in Holbrook already.
We've just got back from the strewnfield, dusty, sweaty and probably a wee bit whiffy
too.but we've found 25+ individuals fragments between the two of us so far. Cool!
:-)

Cheers,

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite show?

2002-10-14 Thread David Freeman

Dear All,
For all of those who have been to Tucson for the show, remember that we
never have enough time or moneySo, although a field trip out would
be great, bunny droppings, or visiting the rudeness (especially at the
mention of H. H. Nininger's name) that I encountered at the crater
doesn't seem so exciting. Oh, numerous signs warn of legal complications
for hunting anything at the crater. Lucky we can even have a camera
there...
Now the old meteorite museum very near there could spark a cool outing
location if the property owners would allow it.
As a side note, the petrified wood east of there is a marvel for those
collectors, and the rare woodworthia and shilderia can be had at local
rock shops and flea market in Holbrook, and we are full circle back to
those pesky bunnies and their calling cards.
Best,
Dave Freeman

Hi Tom and all again,

Oh yes, there are a couple of guys, I think they are twins or something who have a
birthday party at the local Mexican Restaurant near the Ramada. Can't seem to remember
their names but anyway there are quite a few people who gather at that occasion and it
is one of THE premier events of the Tucson Show these days. If I could only remember
their namesit will come to me I am sure. :-)
