[meteorite-list] New Colorado fall or faux?

2011-06-14 Thread Rob Holcomb
Check out this article about a rock found in Greely Colorado. True? or
False?

Doesn't look like any meteorite I've ever seen, seems more like a schist or
something with a high crystalline content.

I don't think so, and most university professors couldn't identify a meteorite
if it hit them on the head. Can't tell you how many times I get calls saying
but the geology professor says this is a meteorite. Looks like this one is
bogus too. But these local papers LOVE printing stories like this.

BUZ... (Low frequency WRONG sounding buzzer)

Sure looks like a piece of slag.

The only thing that is originally authentic in this article is the word under
the picture.

Originality

Originality is the aspect of created or invented works by as being new or
novel, and thus can be distinguished from reproductions, clones, forgeries, or
derivative works.[citation needed] An original work is one not received from
others nor one copied based on the work of others.[citation needed]. It is a
work created with a unique style and substance. The term originality is often
applied as a compliment to the creativity of artists, writers, and
thinkers.[citation needed] The idea of originality as we[who?] know it was
invented by Romanticism,[1] with a notion that is often called romantic
originality.[2][3][4]

Appropriate for this article and the person that made the identification, but
not for science.

Result... Lay people are deceived.

No, not a romance novel but on an Ebay auction. The romance (novel
excluded) will be the wishful thinking in the description, as provided by the
originality of this newspaper article.

Better images in this video clip. Looks like that smelting slag/cinders
you find near the Holbrook railroad tracks.

The professor mentioned in the text would appear to work in an
Anthropology department.
