[meteorite-list] New meteorite book _The_Fallen_Sky_

2009-07-23 Thread Darren Garrison
My copy of The Fallen Sky arrived today. I've had just a few minutes to look
over it so no major details, but it is a sizable hardback (448 pages of text not
counting index, notes, and such) and is divided into 10 sections, each on a
different meteorite-related topic. Section 7 is A Serious Case of the I Wants:
The Passions of the Dealers which should particularly interest many list
members as a few of you make cameo appearances.

I did a quick scan of a few sample pages from that chapter. I didn't work to
make them actually look good (which might require disarticulating the pages to
get the inside edges flat) or to give a whole segment, but just to give an idea
of the contents.

You had to go and stop the sample pages where the topic on the last
paragraph states::

The very act of collecting, many say is sexual...

Thanks, now we all will have to go out and buy this just to find out what
he is talking about.

While I have heard people in the field tell others to go do something
with themselves, I never really thought of meteorites and meteorite
collecting in the terms of being sexual in nature.

And you say there is 448 pages of this?

Re: [meteorite-list] New meteorite book The Fallen Sky

2009-07-23 Thread Notkin

Dear Listees:

Chris Cokinos, the author of The Fallen Sky: An Intimate History of
Shooting Stars is a friend of mine, and I was privileged to assist
him in some very small ways with a few aspects of the book's
production during the past several years. I have been reading an
advance copy for some time, and will be reviewing TFS for the
November issue of Meteorite.

Chris is a brilliant author, and brings a literary quality to writing
about meteorites that we have not seen before. I found TFS to be the
most enthralling meteorite book I have read since Find a Falling
Star and I heartily recommend it to both meteorite enthusiasts and
those who enjoy contemplative non-fiction. TFS is a highly personal
work. Don't expect to read a lot of numbers and details about
classification. Do expect to read a unique and inspiring work about
the allure, history, and mystery of meteorites.

If you are open minded and keen to go along with a gifted author on
his journey of discovery, then TFS is a must-have.

[meteorite-list] New Meteorite Book Out

2009-02-07 Thread McCartney Taylor
Finally! The complete account of the Santa Lucia, Argentina meteorite is now
out. This is the meteorite fall that occurred last year in January, 2008. This
book covers the fall, the field work, the mapping of the strewnfield, addresses
the new export law, and tries to do all of that woven around an entertaining
story. Meteorite Magazine will have a review in an issue or two.

After working on it for months, the monograph is finished. Its received an ISBN
and a copy is submitted to the Library of Congress. Total 68 pages, 9x6, full
of great color photos. Google has scanned a few teaser pages and will have them
online in 6 weeks, I believe.

For those interested, this will be the first of a series of monographs. Each
monograph will cover an individual meteorite falls I've launched expeditions
too. Again, for non-native English speakers, a monograph is simply a book which
is very focused in scope. In this case, a single meteorite. This book is
catered more toward institutions and hard core collectors, it is not a simple
introductory text. I took great pain to NOT have a single equation in it; it
hurt me to do that.

Available at Lulu Publishing, the link is here:
http://www.lulu.com/content/5344624

They've priced it at $35. Softback, full color, 68pp.

Because this is Tucson weekend, I'll repost this again in a week.

Great idea McCartneylook forward to that...will be good to focus on one
particular fall and all thats involved for a change, rather than all the other
more generalised books on meteoritics.

Its actually a monograph which is different than a book. For those non

In this case, its focused on just the Santa Lucia Meteorite Fall that
occurred in January, 2008. I was fortunate to be the only field researcher
there after the fall. The monograph contains my field notes, color pictures,
stories, research, new Argentine law issues, and other items related to just
 this fall. 65 pages.

This will be the first in a series of monographs covering meteorite falls and
fines I've researched. That will include Tanzania, Deport, the new Canadian,
etc... I'll roll these out when I damn well feel like it. :0)

I'll give the list a heads up when it comes available.

[meteorite-list] New meteorite book

2004-10-06 Thread Pierre-Marie PELE
Hello to the List.

As some of you know, I'm writing a book about French Meteorites. The title should be
Les Météorites françaises - Guide pratique (in english : French meteorites -
Practical guide)

The good news is that it may be released before Christmas, making it a nice gift for
any meteorite collector or scientist.

Also it's in French, it might be of interest for any meteorite collector, including
english-speaking people. For example, I'm not a german-speaking man and like to get
old german documents (like Chladni's articles) about meteorites.

What will be included in this 460 pages book ?
- beginner's guide (for anyone beginning in meteorites collecting and hunting)
- complete and detailed classification
- how to recognize a meteorite ?
- all french meteorites (finds or falls, including the latest, Plancy-l'Abbaye and
Alby-sur-Cheran) with unique pictures never seen before, old documents, old and latest
analysis, museum distribution, bibliography, some maps. Unique old documents which
may lead to new meteorite finds in France !
- all french meteorwrongs
- most of the french observed meteors or observed falls never recovered (with hints to
find them maybe !)
- french meteorite or pseudo-meteorite craters
- glossary
- useful websites
- complete Jean-Baptiste Biot text about the L'Aigle fall (1803)

I think this book will become a classic most of you will want to own in their library
or meteorite collection !

Just write me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you want to be contacted when the book
is released (possibility to order it on the web). Price should be reasonable.

[meteorite-list] New Meteorite Book from Smithsonian

2001-12-27 Thread geoking

Dear Listees:

On page 13 of the latest (Spring 2002) Smithsonian Institution Press
catalog is a full-page description of a new book entitled
Meteorites: A Journey through Space and Time, by Alex Bevan and
John de Laeter. It is described as an expertly guided look at
meteorites, and contains a great deal of material about the 84002
Martian meteorite.

Also: The 160 color and 70 bw illustrations that illuminate the
text present some of the most stunning examples of these ancient
voyagers.

There are a couple of photos in the catalog, including a shot of the
11 1/2 ton main mass of Mundrabilla (!), and a reproduction of the
new book's cover art, which looks very attractive.

256 pages, 9 x 11, priced $35.95. It is scheduled for an April 2002 release.

The S.I. Press' website is: www.sipress.si.edu
