[meteorite-list] nwa 1685

2007-03-25 Thread steve arnold
After looking at my 198 gram individual, and seeing
what looks like a upwards bubbly chondrule, mole like
and 8 mm across. To me it would seem like a chondrule
that was exploding outward than stopped just before it
could break the surface thus keeping the beautiful
crust intact. Also of all the pieces I have seen or
had,I have only had 3 pieces, all the fusion crust is
BLACK AND VERY GLOSSY.It has just a unique shine not
like most other nwa's.I can hardly wait to get my new
112 gram completely intact specimen. Also of all the
whole piece's I have seen, most of them have superb
thumbprinting.I hope we can keep this thread going all
day. It's even better when bernd gets involved. Also you
can see my new coming piece on my homepage.

[meteorite-list] nwa 1685

2007-03-30 Thread steve arnold
My new 112 gram nwa 1685 came today from simon
deboer.I know I cannot say, that I have seen many other
nwa 1685,but this one is even better than my 198 gram
piece. It has the dark nice black fusion crust on it as
well as the brown patina of being in the ground for so
long on it's bottom. It has nice little thumbprinting
all over and jet black glossy fusion crust is simple
spectacular.This one is 100% crusted.Picvture on my
homepage of my website. This is such a mystery but so
beautiful.

Hi Steve,

I have a thin section of NWA 1685. The label states:

NWA 1685, purchased in Erfoud (Morocco), 2002, tkw: 1302 g. Type: L/LL5 br.

Do you mean the type (class) is unknown and that it is not a L/LL5 br ?
If you have more info on the real class, thanks for sharing.

Cheers

Good Morning All and Steve,

Just wondering,
Zelimir writes that he already has the classification for this meteorite.
Maybe that shows that this one might not be the same meteorite.
If Dean found several in a box of goodies, then it could be possible yours
is not the same as Zelimir's.

Guess you will never be 100% sure unless you have it classified too.

With best regards,
Moni

Hi list and Mike T.
on Dean Besseys (meteoriteshop.com) salespage you can read:
«NWA 1685(BL): Paired stones are in the process of being classified.
There is a bit of metal
but indications are that it will be an LL5 or LL6. But they are leaning
toward an L5 also.»
So - Dean should know!

Hi Steve and List,

As far as I know it has been mentioned but not really discussed. One possible
explanation might be a relatively high calcium and iron content (this is what
produces the wet-looking fusion crust on eucrites!).

[meteorite-list] NWA 1685 or Dean's BL

2004-04-17 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello Dean, BL-owners and List,

Today I took some digital pictures of several of my thin sections
under crossed polarized light. Among these, my NWA 1685 thin
section which I purchased from Dean a few days ago and I am
glad I did. He had another one on EBay but I've just bought it with
"Buy It Now" :-)

The BL's have already been the subject of much debate and whatever
they will finally be classified as, they are beautiful, they are extraordinary.
There are now two gorgeous, cut specimens in my collection: 131 grams
and 251.3 grams with fantastic fusion crust and regmaglypts - plus these
two thin sections.

Here is what I found in the BL thin section thaI I already own:

Both in hand specimen as in thin section there are areas that are absolutely
featureless, devoid of any chondrules or other inclusions, and look almost
achondritic.

The view under crossed polars is breathtaking: While there are chondrules
and mineral components of various sizes in a fine-grained, almost opaque
groundmass, the featureless clast in my TS shows an incredible, equigranular
structure without any fine-grained, interstitial groundmass ... as if it had been
"blown" or "swept" away.

Never before have I seen this in any other thin section that I have or that I
have seen pictured in the literature. Imagine hundreds and hundreds of
colorful little pearls seen from a distance.

Best wishes,

Bernd

Good evening list.As of now I cannot dislodge who told
me,but it is a very prominent list member. But even as
we speak,NWA 1685,LL6 the black nwa,is finally in
classification.Hopefully in a couple months we will
finally after 5 years find out what this most unusal
meteorite is.Keep your fingers crossed.

1685,has anyone come up with a reason why on this
meteorite has such a shiny black crust vs. a regular
nwa's crust?I am wondering if this has been discussed.

I hear that the black NWA went in for classification but, unfortunately, while
traveling through Los Angeles, it was stopped by police for on apparent reason
and severely beaten before being locked away. So who knows how long before we

[meteorite-list] NWA 1685 or Dean's BL Chondrite

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6580283897&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1

Hello from the owner of two NWA 1685 individuals cut in two halves and two NWA
1685 thin sections:

The matrix and texture of Dean's BL chondrite is one of the most beautiful
things you'll ever have seen
come from NWA. It is brecciated, inclusion-rich, and clast-rich. Some clasts
are so featureless that I
decided to buy two NWA 1685 thin sections from Dean when he had them on EBay
and find out what these looked
like under the microscope. TS#1 almost knocked my socks off and made me doubt
if that could be an LL5 or an
LL6. These areas look almost achondritic, not a trace of something
chondrule-like. The term "metachondrite"
had not been born yet at that time, but that's what the featureless portions of
this beauty look like:

Thousands of tiny, colorful crystals evenly distributed, and, as I said before,
not the slightest hint
of a chondrule or relict chondrules in these parts of the matrix.

Cheers,

Bernd
