Happy Barwellmas ;-)

Or upload the tv prog somewhere that us folks in the other remote parts of the
Universe can access it (with a link on the list)...then that would be marvelous.

Just a thought that as Tucson is always after Christmas then family can't
browse around for presents...so all you dealers are missing out (and collectors
for that matter)surprised I havn't seen seen some of you selling meteorite
gift vouchers...would work online too?as most family have no idea what
to buy in the form of a meteorite for their loved one then that would help
everybody out :-)

Hope everyone has an excellent festive break before the build up to Tucson.

Fwd: [meteorite-list] Park Forest fall

2003-03-29 Thread SSachs9056
Hi Mike and List,
Because the news media reported that the going price is $500.00 and ounce, it
makes me wonder what the Field Museum is willing to shell out for specimans.
Or are people just going to be browbeated for their finds? Seems that the
Field Museum will be the recipient of a two-edged sword.

First they tell everyone to donate to the Museum / Universities. Then the
media heats the fire with the $500.00 an ounce curse.

Let me see if I have this right: Media reports $500 an ounce-Field Museum
doesn't have those kind of funds (for dinosaur Sue yes), but tells everyone
to come Saturday for their big payday.hm. This should be interesting.

Steve Sachs (also from Chicago area) IMCA# 9210

---BeginMessage---

I am also saddened, the people here mostly still
have their stones, they think they hit the lotto and made millions. I have
offered $5000 for several stones today in the 1 kilo range and been laughed at
and nearly booted out. They think that is an insult and freaked out. This is
what I am saying, there is no sense of reality now, they all think they are
millionaires. I expect there will be a few hundred grams for sale by us dealers,
not much more. I mean, who can buy it here and make any money? I hope some
change their minds so that we can provide for those who did not make it
here.
I love meteorites, and love the chase, and this one
could be so cool but it is already too stressful. Ask Steve Witt. The man filed
a complaint saying Steve ripped him off by not paying him the $500 an ounce !
The police chief told Steve to get out or be arrested. I mean really, what kind
of crap is that?
By the way, I don't suggest going to the police
station or calling them regarding the meteorites, you will not get a warm
reception.

Well, in defense of the common man here, imagine yourself as someone who
knows squat about meteorites except for tidbits that cross the news every
now and then that tell of a SNC or Lunar selling for a crazy amount of
money. Then all of a sudden you have one fall in your yard, it's all over
TV, dealers are swooping in and setting up tables to buy it, Museums are
clamoring for it - what would you think? I would think I'd hit the jackpot
too.

As a meteorite enthusiast, I think this would be the perfect time for some
meteorite education. Set up a lecture one night to tell people about the
different types of meteorites, maybe even have a few to show. Explain why
some are really valuable and some aren't quite so valuable. A meteorite
saavy public probably would have avoided much of this. After all, in
everything, ignorance is our worst enemy.

Re: Fwd: [meteorite-list] Park Forest fall

2003-03-29 Thread John Gwilliam
My guess is that when the finders show up at the museum, they will probably
be told that it's their duty as citizens to donate the meteorites or sell
them at a low price. Believe me, there isn't a museum or a research
institute out there that will pay $15/g for this material when there is
possibly a lot more of it to be found.

Within a few weeks, the market for this new fall will drop to a reasonable
point . Then all those greedy people who held out for BIG bucks will wish
they had sold it to the dealers and collectors in the first place. Watch
Ebay. Within the next few days, several pieces will show up with
outrageous prices but few, if any, will sell. Those price will adjust too.
By Easter time there will be a lot of this stone available at a reasonable
price. Unless, of course, someone finds signs of life from outer space in
it...like a winged ant or something ;-)

Just my opinion,

John Gwilliam

I am also saddened, the people here mostly still have their stones, they
think they hit the lotto and made millions. I have offered $5000 for
several stones today in the 1 kilo range and been laughed at and nearly
booted out. They think that is an insult and freaked out. This is what I
am saying, there is no sense of reality now, they all think they are
millionaires. I expect there will be a few hundred grams for sale by us
dealers, not much more. I mean, who can buy it here and make any money? I
hope some change their minds so that we can provide for those who did not
make it here.
I love meteorites, and love the chase, and this one could be so cool but
it is already too stressful. Ask Steve Witt. The man filed a complaint
saying Steve ripped him off by not paying him the $500 an ounce ! The
police chief told Steve to get out or be arrested. I mean really

Later guys best of luck to you all,

I hope you are right, but now it is being bought by dealers for $12.00 gram
.
This is not such a large fall, very populated area, so not many lying in
fields.
Good luck to all wanting some, ill be home in a couple days, I will have
some for sale, price unknown but quite expensive. If you want to wait, no
problem, but then you risk getting nothing of this fall. Time will tell. I
saw nothing today, the people who have the large pieces in there homes will
not sell, except one that is, I got that one here beside me right now. It
smashed a house, and a printer, and a computer game. I got the printer,
meteorite, hole cut out of the roof, shigle with hole through it. 1 kilo, of
course, NOT FOR SALE WHATSOEVER, NEVER WILL BE. Sorry to the dealers who
tried to outbid me and buy out from under me, the woman who sold it to me
had enough integrity to keep her word and complete the deal we made over
many hours of haggeling and phone calls.

My guess is that when the finders show up at the museum, they will
probably
be told that it's their duty as citizens to donate the meteorites or
sell
them at a low price.

 Hi Mike and List,
Because the news media reported that the going price is $500.00 and
ounce, it
makes me wonder what the Field Museum is willing to shell out for
specimans.
Or are people just going to be browbeated for their finds? Seems that the
Field Museum will be the recipient of a two-edged sword.

First they tell everyone to donate to the Museum / Universities. Then the
media heats the fire with the $500.00 an ounce curse.

Let me see if I have this right: Media reports $500 an ounce-Field
Museum
doesn't have those kind of funds (for dinosaur Sue yes), but tells
everyone
to come Saturday for their big payday.hm. This should be
interesting.

May I suggest that someone become the designated party to collect money
for
a piece of this fall for Art. I would be glad to donate $20.00 or so for
such a worthy cause. With Mike Farmer busy working the fall, it doesn't
seem appropriate for him to be given the added burden.

Any volunteers? Let me know and I'll send $$.
